Even the best zoos are terrible environments for elephants. In the wild, the mother would have see other babies being born, and had the opportunity to be a "nanny" or "auntie" to the babies (they're a very matriarchal society). Probably one of the best groups on the planet today dealing with elephants is Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. They rescue orphan elephant babies (and several other animals, including a rhino), raise them, and teach them about how to live in the wild so they can return to their natural lives. Astoundingly, the bonds they form with their humans are so close that they often return from the wild to have their wild-born babies in the safety and presence of the people who raised them. I donate to them regularly. The stories are amazing, from heartbreak to triumph. There are no words to describe how much I hate the insurance industry. And I live in a country with universal healthcare, so l'm not directly affected, but they're predatory soulless c***s who feast on people's tragedies. It's currently happening in Valencia. Even if I wasn't poor I would buy most of my clothes from the op shop (thrift store). It is pretty common where I live (except maybe in certain suburbs) for people (mostly women) to brag about the deals they have gotten from the op shop. I have a handbag shaped like a book that has gotten a lot of compliments and at least twice it has led to me chatting about deals from op shops with random women at the bar.
