Autistic Boy Goes To School With A Hidden Recorder In Backpack, Two Teachers Get Fired

12-year-old Camden Davis, from Baton Rogue, Louisiana, had been attending the Hope Academy since last year. The academy specializes in teaching special needs students, and according to its website promotes “inclusion, encouragement, positive relationships and recognition of student accomplishment.”

Camden is severely autistic, and his mother Milissa had enrolled him at Hope Academy in the hope of giving him a supportive and understanding environment where he could learn at his own pace. However, she began to notice increased signs of distress in Camden after coming home from school and instinctively knew that something was wrong.

So one day, she decided to place a recording device in his backpack to get an idea of what might be causing his unhappiness, as he was unable to vocalize it himself. It’s fair to say that she was shocked with what she found. Camden was being bullied. Not by classmates or kids in the playground, but by the specially trained teachers who were supposed to support him.

“I’m sad and heart broken that this happened to Camden,” Milissa told Bored Panda. “I am his biggest advocate and his biggest fighter for justice. No child should have to have this happen to them. I brought this to light because I wanted my son to be the last kid that this happened to at this school. This is happening all over the world, and people need to learn to accept kids and adults with Autism. They have a light in them that shines so bright.”

Camden is at a new school and his new teacher has a degree in special ed, Applied Behavior Analysis, and a minor in psychology, so he is being well treated now. However, he still suffers some effects from his experience. “He still is having severe anxiety and wetting the bed,” Milissa told us. “He had not wet the bed since he was 3.”

“Bullying is terrible when it’s kids-on-kids. But it’s so much worse when it’s adults picking on your child.”

Scroll below to see how the story unfolded.

But she noticed that the usually cheerful and happy boy was distressed. He got aggressive and would frequently wet the bed

In her desperation, Milissa came up with a plan

And the things teachers were saying to Camden left her in shock

The next day she took the recordings to the school board, which kicked off a chain reaction

The school’s principal, Lisa Stone, had to act quickly and fired the two teachers heard in the recordings

Here are the actual recordings that got the internet boiling with fury

Milissa pulled Camden out of the school immediately and has sought legal advice. Her social media post about the incident went viral but has since been removed, while the teachers involved appear to have been fired from the school. Hope Academy’s principal, Linda Stone, released this statement about the incident:

“On March 23, 2018, a recording posted to social media was brought to our attention. Apparently, a parent sent a student to school with a recording device in his/her backpack. The recording appears to be a compilation of audio clips, many of which involve private conversations between two adults with no other persons/children present. The recording contains regretful conversations between these adults.
The parent never brought the recording to the attention of Hope Academy before posting it on social media. The parent has also refused to meet with Hope Academy to discuss the actions we have taken to address the issue. The persons involved in the communications are either no longer with the school or will no longer be with the school after this semester.
Over these many years, Hope Academy has built a strong reputation for competently serving the educational needs of the special needs community. These recordings are not an indication of who we are. We ask that the community not let the actions of two persons reflect on the reputation of and the mission of our school-a mission we have tried so hard to build. We again extend an invitation to meet with the parent involved to discuss this incident further.”

I'm a 7th grader and even I can tell that these teachers are awful. One of my best friends is autistic, and he is the smartest person I know and would be very offended if someone said those things to him. I also help in the special needs classroom at my school, and they are some of the nicest kids in the entire building. I'm hoping to grow up to become a special education teacher, and I'll definitely be nicer than these teachers! I'm really glad that they both got fired!

I'm autistic (very high functioning). I have other mental disorders, like dyslexia, ADHD, Bipolar disorder and OCD. It's hard to think that people can really treat people like me like we're idiots, that we can't understand anything or things like that. People with learning disabilities aren't stupid. They learn differently. I wish there were more people who can understand this.

I feel you, Mikaela-Rose Evans :) Even one who is nonverbal may possibly still understand what is going on. I have heard cases of where a few non-verbal autistic adults learned to type and expressed intelligence that no one thought they had. Regardless too of the level of functioning, a common mistake is to assume people with autism are all the same and not thinking about other factors such as for example ADHD, or the mere fact that it affects us all differently anyway. While this subject is complex, and it is understandable that many fall prey to misconceptions, thank you for helping to spread knowledge to others. :)

I'm glad this mom did what she had to do to protect her child. FYI, recording without consent is illegal in many places and you could be charged with a crime if you do this. I read a similar story recently where another mother did the exact same thing and was arrested for it, so don't think authorities will just let it slide. Protect your kids, but know what you may be getting in to.

I would counter-sue and expel the boy. An unauthorized recording device on a private school campus is illegal and surely a violation of enrollment terms.

I agree, that statement read very wrong. Good thing she took her son out of there (awesome mom, btw!). Environments with a negative atmosphere (gossiping, bullying etc) often seem to have this behavior because it's either tolerated or even reinforced from the top down. I hope there will be consequences for this school.

My nephew had a PROFESSOR announce to the whole class that "William has a*s burgers!!". My nephew has Asperger's Autism, as well as his two siblings, his father and mother, and myself. That professor will NEVER teach in my state again, believe me!! Nebraska's public school system, and it's community college are a JOKE if you have any type of disability or learning disorder!!!!

I'm not surprised one bit. Sadly many groups that claim to be understanding are full of ignorant people who only want to improve their reputations. I have autism myself and was really shocked at the treatment I and other children at the time received from similar groups. Autism is simply impossible to type-cast, there's such a broad range, and even the range within a single person is not necessarily uniform nor linear.

I don't know how difficult or easy it is to be a teacher in the US, here in SA it very easy, compared to other careers. Some people often go into teaching as a means of making a living, with no passion for the job or love and patience for children. It is such a shame that as parents we have no choice but to send our kids to these people for their education. This makes me worry about how my children are treated at school. I have a daughter that's only a year old who goes to day care, I always worry about how she is and how the teachers are treating her. I am sorry that this mother had to hear those things they were saying to her child. I commend her for being smart enough to pick up that something was not right with her child

Idc what country you are from, teaching is an incredibly tough job. You have to fight for the good ones and put a stop to those who are unqualified for their jobs. Less people are becoming teachers here in the US b/c salaries are awful. That's how awful people like these two teachers end up in the education world. it's truly sad.

Why do these people (they aren't teachers) choose this profession when they don't care about the children? If the time comes when you have lost heart and no longer care to "teach" it is time to change professions.

Wellll...There are many questions to be answered here. Some are financial...How much are these teachers paid, how much training do they have, and how are they vetted? Do teachers have adequate back-up support when they need to take attention away from the rest of the class to address individual student needs, which can vary quickly and require immediate intervention? What is the pay differential between administrators and teachers? In my experience high level administrators may be paid well over $120,00 a year, while teachers may be paid under $30,000...not a good recruiting strategy. Lastly, what oversight does the administration have over everyday activities in the school...it is really on them that a parent had to find a way to identify these problems. That is the administrators' job!! Someone should evaluate them...they appear to be negligent. A sad post, but an excellent mom...watchful over her child and ready to take action to protect him!

If you can't handle working with special needs kids or any kids for that matter, get a different job? If you thought you could but it stresses you out too much, quit and get something else. Kids, with or without special needs, shouldn't be treated like this by the people that are supposed to teach them and help them grow.(shouldn't be treated like that by anyone actually.)

I'd like to give props to those that can do this job. There is something spectacular about people who can stay calm and encouraging in tough situations that exist in special needs classrooms. Yes that child might be frustrating but it's not his fault and taking your anger out on him solves nothing. So thank you....all you teachers and care givers that do this job without the recognition that you deserve!

Unfortunately there are many teachers out there like that. They only want the job for the long holidays. Even with non special needs kids they're don't care they just put the ones that struggle at the back of the class and just focus on the brighter kids. It's just so wrong and sad. Every child is special and every child no matter what their learning abilities should have the chance to shine and have all their needs met and addressed.

On April 27th, 2018 D.G. Sciortino from Shareably came up with an article that is so biased it borders on the absurd. “Teachers Bully Boy With Autism And Mom Catches Them On Tape” might as well have been written by Milissa Davis, the mom in charge of this set up. Right off the bat, once you’ve identified a handicapped student by name and start publishing his photograph, you’ve already violated C**A, GINA, FERPA and HIPPA. So obviously the welfare of this child is not Sciortino’s first concern. “Nonprofit school” is just an elegant way to say “Charter School.” One day Milissa Davis decided to hide a recording device in her son’s backpack, record adults without their knowledge or consent and then post these recordings online in violation of C**A, FERPA, HIPPA, federal wiretapping laws, cyberstalking laws and probably a few other laws I can’t remember. THEN she took her son out of the school and got a lawyer. Hope Academy’s principal Linda Stone put out a written statement. “On March 23

While those teachers were wrong to say what they did, I do have sympathy for teachers who work in difficult environments. I have substituted before and I can tell you that many kids refuse to behave and will disrupt the classroom. It can be very frustrating when there is limited punishment options available for substitutes to use on disruptive students. Even special needs students will sometimes do less than they are capable of doing and can be disruptive. It is important to know what a student's capabilities are, but I believe that we should hold students to them rather than letting them get away with avoiding work and disrupting the classroom.

I don't hate the teachers and honestly what I heard wasn't horrible and to be fair being a teacher at a special needs school is frustrating like really frustrating and if one of the students isn't doing what they are supposed to which is what it sounded like it can be more frustrating and it seems like they were taking their frustration on him and since people with special needs can be different it can be hard to connect with them but since they should've been aware of what they were getting into and I do agree that what they said wasn't ok but I can't hate them for doing what they did also I feel like if you are going to be a special needs teacher then they should have special training and requirements if they don't already.

However, if you're going to sign up for such a trying job you should know what you're getting yourself into. It is illegal in New Zealand to record someone without their knowledge. But what a revelation! And with a son who cannot communicate I fully understand it. However she should have given the school the opportunity to address it first. They may not have done anything, and she could still go public, but it was the right thing to have done. Seems like everyone is a douchebag here. The mom not wanting to talk to the principle and instead going to the internet is just awful, as is going public with people's private coversations. The teachers that said stuff right to the kid need a smack, but so does this mom. People say all kinds of stuff privately between friends. EVERYONE does it. Every single person says things privately they would not say publicly, or at the very least they think things they wouldn't say publicly. Everyone. Maybe the mom was just at wits end so I get it, but she still chose poorly.

This is not enough to fire them but also certified them not fit for the job in future in same capacity , as they need psychological treatment themselves and they can not be care taker or teacher of wonderful kids. I am very upset with this incident full marks to mother of wonderful kid and even the board of the school should also be fined due to not able to understand the parents complain and there should be some training to them also.

It's hilarious that the administration claims that the teachers were talking amongst themselves with no kids present...how did that "conversation" come into existence, then? ... They'll close ranks and pretend the recordings are a lie and try to pretend that since the child is already disabled, no one can "prove" what happened.

To be fair, it's possible the conversation happened during recess and the backpack was left in the room while the kids were outside (I don't know how it is in America, but in my country it's pretty common to leave your backpack in the classroom during recess). However I agree it's more likely they're lying.

I am very upset with this incident full marks to mother of wonderful kid and even the board of the school should also be fined due to not able to understand the parents complain and there should be some training to them also.
