This has nothing to do with left/right but with democracy vs authoritarianism. You can have dictatorships on the left and on the right of the political spectrum and once you look at them, they're both remarkably similar in terms of methods and results - and even targets they go after, such as intellectuals, because they are seen as the greatest threats to the system. That's why the political spectrum is actually a horseshoe - at the top of the horseshoe you have democratic liberalism and at the bottom ends you have both left and right authoritarianism. So the opposite of a communist dictatorship is not a fascist dictatorship, but the opposite to both is a liberal democracy. And this democracy you can have it either entirely capitalist (everyone for himself and if you're born poor, then you're out of luck, example US) or socialist (the government tries to balance things by taxing rich people more and helping those in need, example Sweden, noway, etc).

r3dd - it seems that you are personally offended when the rest of the world tries to figure out china. But before people get into a snit & start passive aggressive blaming, it should be considered that there has been a long tradition for china to be closed to the outside world. Intellectuals have long ago observed the past 300 desatrous years & elaborated how the peaceful, self-content (&pride)"middle kingdom" has missed its chance to look outside& see the dangers of colonialization, new scientific developments a.o.Each untouched paradise as each naïve feeling is constantly endangered to be broken or contaminated. Since we all agree that china is still in its developping state, there seems to be no reason to be this offended. It is with sadness that people around the world see hard measures being taken in this way but they will feel sorry for the citizens. And u mite remember that western analysis as this is more theoretical/ ideology-based- and thus not personal (or emotional)

There hasn't been communism in China for decades, they just keep using the name to pretend nothing has changed. These days China is more like a one-party authoritarian dictatorship based on a cut-throat capitalist economic system. The word communism is nothing but window dressing now.

This system hasn't been implemented country-wide yet, but if it is a sucess for China, other countries with a wish to control their populace are sure to copy it. Modern technology has brought us many advantages, but as we can see, it's also a tool that can be misused in hitherto unimaginable ways.
