Unfortunately for us, Australia isn’t entirely populated just by friendly locals, cool kangaroos, and cute koalas. The Land Down Under sometimes seems like the most dangerous country on the entire planet and should be renamed the Land of Nope.
In large part, the country owes its reputation to its ruthless natural hazards, the dangerous animals that live there, and all the scary things that want to make us yell ‘nope!’ and run away faster than the speed of sound in the opposite direction.
To show you just how scary animals in Australia can be, Bored Panda created a list of all the dangers lurking in the Land Down Under. Keep scrolling, share with your friends, and upvote your favorite dangerous animals in Australia!

From enormously big spiders to deadly venomous snakes, ferocious crocodiles, octopuses, and disgustingly overgrown earthworms, the Great Southern Land seems to have it all when it comes to nightmare fuel and creepy crawlies. We can probably all agree that some Australian animals look absolutely terrifying, but how dangerous are they really?
Believe It Or Not, This Is One Of The Least Dangerous Spiders We Have In Australia
This is the huntsman spider, a common friend to be found in houses and garden across Australia. He's harmless really, don't let his large size intimidate you. Huntsmen won't bite humans unless provoked, are not venomous and are actually handy to have around the place, he'll use his speed and agility to keep your cockroach population under control.
Think of the huntsman as a handy pet. Respect his space, let him do his job and he'll look after you well.

If poisonous snakes don’t cause you to scream and panic, then what about spiders? More than 2,400 different species of arachnids call the Land Down Under their home.
Among them is the deadly Sydney funnel-web spider, which can end a person’s life within 15 minutes of biting them. This spider always gets into the top lists of the world’s deadliest arachnids and doesn’t mess around: if you see one, nope, right out of there!

68mm just fell in the last hour at Kununurra. Flushed all the cane toads out of my brothers dam. Some of them took the easy way out - hitching a ride on the back of a 3.5m python.
The cane toads are deadlier than the python believe it or not. Cane toads have very few predators due to the toxins. These cane toads were hitching a ride to escape a storm although on expert claims that the male cane toads were in fact trying to mate with the python.

That’s not to say that every single spider you encounter abroad is going to be a threat to you. Fortunately, less than 50 Australian spider species pose a threat to people. Let’s also not forget that most spiders are our friends and help keep the native insect population down.
Obviously, these tidbits of good news won’t really make Australia’s spiders any less scary to look at. Anyone with arachnophobia should probably still avoid Australia until they get over their fear of spiders and travel elsewhere for their summer vacation.

What is Australia’s Deadliest Animal?
It might come as a surprise, but Australia’s deadliest animal isn't one of its many venomous creatures. Forget the spine-chilling spiders or the fearsome crocodile. According to the NCIS (National Coronial Information System), the title of Australia’s deadliest animal goes to a far more familiar creature: the horse.
In the wild and rugged landscapes of Australia, where one might expect the most danger to come from its notorious wildlife, it’s actually horses, ponies, and donkeys that pose the greatest risk. From 2001 to 2017, horses have been responsible for the highest number of animal-related deaths in Australia, with 172 fatalities, mostly due to falls.
Cows and other bovine animals also rank high on the list, with 82 reported deaths for the same period of time, mainly through accidents rather than direct attacks. Even our loyal companions, dogs, hold a surprising rank as the third leading cause of animal-related fatalities, responsible for 53 deaths. Most victims were children and elderly people.
Meanwhile, creatures like snakes and spiders, while dangerous sometimes, have caused far fewer fatalities than one might expect.

This was found in Broome, Western Australia and looks like an anemone. More specifically, Dofleinia armata, the armed anemone. Also called the striped anemone. It is considered extremely dangerous as it can inflict painful stings that take months to heal.
SkyNews reported 3 shark-caused fatalities in South Australia in 2023. This number is notable as there were only 8 deaths in the previous 22 years. Meanwhile, crocodiles kill an average of 1 or 2 people every year in Australia, with a peak in 2014 when 5 crocodile-related deaths have been reported (via The Guardian). However, it’s not just animals that can harm you in Australia.
The country is also known for its giant 10-kilogram pine cones that can fall on top of you, as well as tennis ball-sized hailstones that can cause severe damage if your head is unprotected. When in Australia, it’s best to either keep looking in all directions at once in search of threats or shut your eyes and wish you were somewhere safe and sound.

So, How Many People Are Killed by Animals in Australia?
Based on the available data, from 2001 to 2017, there were 541 animal-related deaths in Australia, with an average of 32 deaths per year. As we’ve seen, among the most deadly animals in Australia, we don’t find any exotic dangers but very familiar faces—horses, cows, and dogs—with land mammals accounting for 71% of all deaths by animals in the country.
These tragedies mainly happened on public roads (30.3%), homes (20.7%), and farms (19.2%).

Blue-Ringed Octopus (Highly Venomous) On Hand
The rings turn more and more blue as they become agitated. This one is not happy. The poison makes you appear to have no vital signs, but they are just super faint, and you can hear perfectly but can't respond. Imagine hearing people say "She's gone, stop CPR" .... Very common in Tasmanian rock pools.
Load More Replies...Whoever had this on their hand is an idiot. The toxins from one single blue ringed octopus can kill over 20 people within minutes. This person is extremely lucky to have not been killed for their stupidity.
Love reading your comments on this post, Roxxy ;)

Why the f**k does this person have an adorable, yet very poisonous, octopus on their damn hand?!
Something that Australians are taught from a very young age...Don't go near Blur Ringed Octopus! What the hell was that person thinking?!
Why do people keep picking up venomous animals and such? This octopus can cause extreme pain and even death
this bloke is on the knife edge, don't touch the pretty octopus if he is blue, it means he is angry and will bite. his beak is so small you may not know u have been bitten till you start to die.
umm ur not suppose dto hold it its gonna bite. CAN WE GET SOMEONE TO CHECK IF THIS DUDES OKAY ANYONE?
That is sooooooo dangerous. When it's blue like that it's about to bite. There is no antidote. It can kill you in 20 minutes.
Actually, the octopus is not upset. The rings would be a much more VIVID blue if he was p...d off. We have them at our waterside property on Lake Macquarie. Still wouldn't want to handle it that way.
never ever touch them this is stupid one wrong move and they will inject venom that will have you screaming then you die.
Really interesting: https://allthatsinteresting.com/blue-ringed-octopus-bite It seems they paralyze through a neurotoxin, which causes you not to breathe, shallow, or close your eyes. People need to try artificial breathing and hook them up to life support until they regain their functions again.

So beautiful and so deadly from what I have read in these comments. Do we know if this person is still alive?

The blue and yellow colours are meant to let other animals (including us) that it is very venomous; like the bands of colours on wasps, bees, some caterpillars and so on.
you can survive these little guys if you get a breathing machine within like, 20 minutes of contact, as long as you wear it for at least 24 hours but otherwise your dead because they have enough venom to kill 26 humans adults. If you survive there are no lasting side effects lol
Nope, it’s certainly not. This person is just very lucky.

What is the Most Unusual Animal in Australia?
We’ve been all about the numbers so far, but what about picking Australia’s most unusual animal? There’s no objective answer to this (there are too many weird animals in Australia), but here’s our personal favorite.
Thorny Devil Lizard is a tiny, colorful reptile covered in spiky scales, which give it a dragon-like appearance and help collect and direct water to its mouth—something this species adapted for to survive in arid environments.
Found primarily in the central deserts of Australia, the Thorny Devil Lizard has a peculiar way of walking. He moves in a slow, rocking motion that helps it escape predators and feeds almost exclusively on ants.

Load More Replies...The most dangerous animal that causes the most deaths is not listed. The horse. The horse kills more humans annually than all these animals put together. So please don’t let this list scare you and stop you from visiting Australia because we have so much amazing things to offer and it would be a shame to miss them from a misguided fear.
Fully agree! Guys Australia is so amazing and definitely worth visiting!
Load More Replies...Yes... I love my country....But it all depends on where you live as to what kinds of danger you may be in and what you may see. For instance, I come from North Queensland in the tropics where jellyfish stings and crocodiles are just something you have to be aware of in your life. I have lived in the bush of rural New South Wales and dealt with a lot of different animals including venomous Red Bellied Blacks (we regularly saw about 5-6 snakes) whom we really appreciated as they keep down populations of pest animals and are quite docile. Living in cities you may never see more than a couple of Daddy Long Legs and some geckos.... Great place...
I think I'm going to stay home and NEVER EVER set true sights on Australia except in pictures of pretty things that are not included in all of the NOPE that Australia has.
You know, I live in a town located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest (Manaus), and even I wouldn't dare to step a foot in Australia.
Hell for people with fear of snakes or spiders. I don't have those fears but I would probably be screaming most of the time while encountering all those creatures. Not used to it.
Snakes are (for the most part) VENOMOUS not poisonous. If you bite it and you die, that’s poisonous. If it bites you and you die, that’s venomous.
In rural Australia ,where I live ,the rule of thumb, don't leave shoes, bags etc outside, check under toilet seats (and inside toilet roles :/) be aware of your surroundings(we have many venomous snakes on our property ,but you rarely see them.I think it's odd that the article didn't mention Redback Spiders , Wolf Spiders,Whitetail Spiders(all venomous),Fire Ants,Jumping Jack ants,Bull ants (very nasty stings form all of them) or Brown Snakes or Taipans both large, fast-moving, highly venomous snakes or even the Red Bellied Black ,venomous but quite shy and usually only bites when stepped on. Summer is the worst for ALL these. things ,except roos they are always about. We have bloody great eagles as well.Be respectful most creatures and they will leave you alone ...Except spiders ,they are big and terriying ,run away! Here is a photo of the two Wedged Tailed eagles that nest on our place, eating a full sized dead sheep! 26993857_1...06b01e.jpg
Whoever wrote this article is an idiot - why do they keep saying "poisonous" when they mean "venomous"? They're two completely different things
When another animal (birds for example) eat a poisonous snake, they die. If the snake was quick and bit the bird then the bird dies from the venom. So when the author used both poisonous and venomous in the same sentence they are referring to both. Also educated Aussies understand the difference of both words and will use the correct word in a description.

I'm glad I went to Australia before I realized how many animals could kill me.
Every Christmas we have a snake show up. Every. Single. Christmas. For the last 5 years. Last year the snake was on the pool slide then another on the road to Grandparents, year before that mum thought we hung a garland on the door. It was NOT a garland. Mum HATES snakes. All my friends know to refer to it as the “s” word.
It's your family's Snake on the Shelf! I shuddered at the thought of a snaky door garland. 🐍
Load More Replies...Yeah... Australia does have a lot of dangerous creatures, but at least we aren't going to be killed by an assault rifle. Leave military equipment to be used for the purpose it was created.
I do really think that Australia is a YES COUNTRY .. For me is the only country that can really cohabit with animals .. They learn how to live with everything that moves .and respect their environment .That is incredible , and believe me i´m scare of spiders and another bugs .. Australia is a really big example for so many country .. we have so much to learn with animals, and have a lot to learn with us too.. there´s a deep connection between everything that lives .. and we should give sense to that .
I live in the pacific nw...it is an area with only garter snakes. I am afraid of snakes and see them often. It is my super power to hear or see them (yes hear them, on more than one occasion I have said "i hear something in the grass' and moments later i have spotted the tiny snake.)

I love animals, but those spiders are disturbing! Nope, nope, nope
I would love to visit Australia but the only thing that scares me about AUS are the creepy stories I have listened to on YouTube. The absolute lack of internet, long stretches of highway with no town in sight, gas stations or some locals/transplants directing you down deserted roads at night into nowhere land. The rest are fine by me, I love spiders, snakes and bats. Though I live in Texas and we have our fair share of dangerous/venomous creatures, various rattlesnake/copperhead snakes, scorpions, brown recluse spider and wild boar/hogs. The boars are extremely aggressive and destroy crops and eat 10x’s their weight in agriculture. Though, I have never tried to catch a spider or a snake in Australia and put the little guy outside like I do here in Texas.
My brother-in-law and his girlfriend have been in Aus for 7 years now and have just been given their permanent residency. I have no desire to visit them!
Ya know honestly wouldn't mind all the free snakes and the spiders etc. The thing that would break me would be the excessive amount of flys and the serial killers

Australia invented live export, australia culls its native wildlife, native habitat for the benefit of cattlemen and sheepmen. Australia is the second cruelest country on earth to its own animals. China being first, Spain being third. sorry australia, not only will I never come to your country for ANY reason, or spend one dime on your products, I hope you drown in your own stupidity.
A lot of countries culls wildlife for farming, just have a look at the US for example, not just for farming but also for housing, mining, and other infrastructure. The US exports more live stock/animals than Australia does, in 2013 Aus exported 3,160,610, whilst the US exported 94,775,607. Also look at the countries where rainforests are being destroyed at alarming rates killing off orangutans and other vulnerable animals etc due to the palm oil industry. Add on the countries that use animals for entertainment in cruel ways like being chained up, beaten, starved etc. Look at what the US does to its own citizens too with mass shootings almost daily. Might want to do more research before you deem Australia is the second cruelest country. Could we be better, of course we can but so can almost every other country. Those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
Load More Replies...They forgot Drop Bears and Hoop Snakes in that case! 😆
Load More Replies...Honestly.....I have lived in Australia and this is overrated...I have seen spiders but none quite as big as that....I have seen maybe 2 snakes outside of a zoo....and just don't leave your shoes outside! To me that is common sense!
do u live in the outback cause these are all locals to me...
Load More Replies...I still want to go to Australia someday, believe it or not. Mostly because I know there's more to Australia than the stupid 'everything wants to kill you' punchline/meme.
Start by reading the book "In A Sun Burnt Country" funny and informative. I read after about 4 trips there.
Load More Replies...In Terry Pratchett's Lost Continent there was discussion about the dangerous animals of XXXX (discworld version of Australia). After magical library dumped enough books for small library on the floor, they asked for list of harmless animals. Result: Small piece of parchment with words: "Some of the sheep".
How do things get inside so easily? Seriously wondering! Some of those spiders are so big they'd have to walk through the front door?! (It's even worse to think that they got in when they were tiny and grew up in your house >-
Going to look at a map right now to see if my country far enough away from Australia.
The archetypical "Oh I just understand stereotypes" ignorant douchebag. Stay in your country, no one wants your ignorant brain anywhere else as a tourist.
Load More Replies...I don't care if you all say the spiders are smaller than the pictures, I would be screaming my food head off every damn minute!!! There is no way in hell I would ever visit Australia now. /shudders and scratches every part of her body because she thinks there are spiders on her!
This was awesome and thanks to Foxxy and all the Aussies who shared info!
I buy flame throwers in bulk for normal house spiders can't even imagine what I'd need for spiders in Australia
Load More Replies...40 reasons why New Zealand is a great alternative for those wishing to visit Australia.
I live in Australia and most of the creatures on this list are actually quite harmless.
Well.... this just ruined me form EVER wanting to travel to Australia! All of these are HUGE NOPE NOPE NOPES!
Ok, well this saved me from buying a very expensive flight ! (I'll be going to go horse trekkkng in Ireland instead- probably more dangerous but it's a lifelong dream and I'm a decent rider)
Definitely more dangerous lol. More people are killed by horses in Australia than all the animals in this list put together. 😝
Load More Replies...If anyone here is feeling adventurous, I’d be happy to show them the sights and sounds of good ol’ Melbourne! No snakes or spiders here! Not in plain sight at least :P
I had a teacher from Australia who told us stories about her childhood and how her parents always told her to sweep the giant spiders out with a broom. She awoke one night with a massive spider on her wall and squished it. She then got yelled at by her parents because they had to repaint her wall.
This is a lot of nope. There's plenty of nopes where I live, but I haven't run across snakes or spiders that are as big as the ones in the pictures.
If Canada was not my home...Australia would be the only other country I would live. Went to high school there many many years ago. Yes I met spiders and snakes but still a beautiful country
Well this list just made me not want to go to Australia even more...
Don’t like the bugs here in WI, or snakes and other creatures . Insects. . Yes I am afraid of everything .
Sorry. Not sorry. The only way I’d ever visit Australia after this list is if they took a blow torch to the entire continent and started over. F*****g hell!
Downvote peodophile doesn’t like me freely expressing my fears. Poor boomer
Load More Replies...Checks out. I've seen a tourist charged by a great white, my cat was killed by a snake, I was even bitten by one of those big green stick insects soneone said was harmless 🤣 But most creatures are reasonable
My Facebook friend Vicki lives in the Adelaide area, but the "creepiest" animal she ever found in her garden was a (for humans) non-venomous huntsman spider. I think it depends on the area you live in if you also find venoumous snakes and other dangerous animals "down under".
I feel like everyone thinks that's all there is to Australia. It's not. It's absolutely amazing. Sometimes yeah, you have to be cautious of the wildlife but still.
I will now have nightmares tonight😱 they are all cool but like bro what the heck... 😨😰😨
This was kinda offensive to me, because I doubt the person who made this has even visited Australia, and they are just saying "Don't visit Australia because there's these animals that live here"
No offense to Australia but i'm staying hear id rather not be chased by snake eating frogs
i've nevr been 2 Austraila, but i've always wanted 2 go. this will TOTALLY covine all the scardey cats in my family......
Still forgot some iconic dangers like the Portuguese Man O' War jellyfish that if you touch it... it can basically kill you.
I MUST MOVE TO AUSTRALIA!! ALL THESE CUTE ANIMALS UN-LOVED!!?? I FEEL SO BAD
Yeah I’m Australian and I can confirm that these are defo 100% accurate.
So I saw a crocodile eating a shark, a snake eating a crocodile, and a frog eating a snake. Australia, your food chain is messed up!
I've always wanted to go on a trip to Austrailia, not anymore. Nope nope nope. I have the worst case of Arachnaphobia, even a bigger NOPE.
I think the boring company can make a fortune selling flame throwers in this country.
No wonder they used to send criminals there. Just add definite and it's truely hell on earth.
I would love to visit Australia, but I don’t think I could deal with those spiders. Snakes I don’t have a problem with.
ah yes, Australia. also known as "remind-me-to-never-ever-in-a-miilion-years-come-here" land
Why is spiderman from New York he is obviously supposed to be Australian. Godamn just no
You know what? Maybe I should find Crash Bandicoot if I ever go to Australia.
Thats it. I’m never going down there. The creepy stuff are too creepy and I HATE SNAKES....
Don't forget, thrown correctly, a thong (flip flop for the yanks) or a cup can kill you.
We called them thongs when I was young...lo these many, many years ago.
Load More Replies...I live in a tiny town and decent sized spiders come inside (esp in summer...and I'm a lil arachnophobic). At my Nan's farm there was a huge diamond python that lived in the hay shed (8ft long...not sure what that is in metres) and you'd find his skin every now and then (in the shed of around the branches of a huge pine tree. Dad used it to play a practical joke with the skin until Nan told him to get rid of it or she'd kill him lol. Not sure what happened to the snake. Ticks (paralysis) were worse than the snakes out there tho
I'm a zoologist. My ideal vacation: exploring Australia; a video game in real life.
I do miss all the wildlife at home. Just sitting in the garden and enjoying all the animals.
Apparently there are no horror films in Australia, be cause real life is that much more scary.
So yea you say No because you don´t allow yourself to see the pure nature... A closed mind it´s close system .. and a close system dies ..
living in the country I see and have many huntsman that are absolutely huge in my house and garden. I had such a good laugh looking at all of these
Every winter I tell my better half "There are advantages to living in a cold dry climate. This proves it."
This is hell on earth? How the F&*# are there any people still living in that Jurassic World nightmare of a continent? Figured humans would be extinct there!
USA: bears, alligators, cougars, black widow spiders, wolves, fire ants, Pit Vipers and coral snakes. I'm staying here in Australia :P
And guns. The stats on toddlers killing themselves and others "playing" with guns in USA are terrifying.
Load More Replies...An extreme close up of a relatively small huntsman doesn't count as nope.
How is this even a place? It surrounded by water to keep those crazy things there lmao. Also how are there still any people alive? Everyone better hope they never unionize they'll take over the country then has access to the boats then were all doomed....I hate bugs and I could imagine visiting a place where they are literally the size of my head
GAH!! Stop with the spiders please! I'm going to have nightmares tonight. I couldn't even finish the list.
I reallly liked this article . I am getting ‘ bored’ of bored panda ‘ lately , as all I seem to see I’d. ‘ I recreated a different scene from , showing ‘. Yeh yeh bore off. More of this please @BoredPanda
Ok, so, I looked at maybe 3 pics and freaked out!!!! I'm terrified of spiders and there is no amount of Chris Hemsworths that would make me move to Australia.
If I ever visit Australia (which I would very much love to), I'll live in a bubble the whole time.
Long ago some sadistic British bureaucrat said; We can really screw petty criminals, we'll ship them to Australia. Bwahaha.
I've always wanted to go to Australia for a visit, it was on my bucket list. Needless to say that has been scratched off the list for good!! I refuse to go on vacation to someplace that has spiders and bugs that are the size of a small child. Not to mention all the freaking snakes. NOPE NOPE NOPE, I will enjoy Australia by reading National Geographic magazines.
I have changed my mind about planning a visit. I will admire from afar..
No mention of the number of tourists that have disappeared or been found murdered in the past 12 months alone.
Your more likely to get shot on any given day than murdered in Aus. A lot of the tourists that have disappeared are backpackers who hitchhike.
Load More Replies...Most of the spiders shown are harmless huntsmans and nothing to worry about. They make great houseguests and keep the unwanted ones at bay.
Load More Replies...How did I not see any of this stuff when I was there? I was in Queensland, on the coast and in the interior, and all over New South Wales. Are the scary beasties all up near Darwin or something? Is it because I was there in the winter? 2 and half months, and all I saw were a couple of roos that were ~50 yards away, an emu, and a lot of galahs.
Honestly I don't know how this happens....people must leave their houses wide open and live out in the middle of the bush to get these kinds of animals in their houses...
