Wife Forced To Sleep On Couch After Refusing To Call Husband A Pilot As He’s Never Flown A Plane

Interview With Expert
ADVERTISEMENT

Hobbies are incredibly fun and can add a lot of value to a person’s life. It’s no wonder that people love investing time in their interests and want to become better at them. Some folks even turn their hobbies into jobs, but for most people, that isn’t the case.

A woman tried explaining that to her husband, but he could not accept that spending hours on his leisurely pursuit did not make him an expert. He reached out to netizens, thinking they’d back him up, only to be put in his place.

More info: Reddit

Husband thinks that his simulated flying hobby can match up to a real pilot’s knowledge, is shocked and mad when wife disagrees with him

The poster said that he and his wife had been together for 5 years and never had any problems but that her recent actions made him reconsider the “health” of their relationship

The problem arose when his wife introduced him to her coworker as a food chain manager, even though the poster wanted to be known as a pilot because of his hobby

The husband told netizens that he was a passionate aviation enthusiast who had never flown a plane but had invested countless hours and dollars into his hobby

The man considered himself adept or more knowledgeable than the average pilot, so he was angry that his wife refused to acknowledge his skills

This issue caused a big argument between the couple, and the wife had to sleep on the couch because her husband felt disrespected by her behavior

The Original Poster (OP) is obviously very passionate about his hobby. He shared that he studied flight textbooks, built an A330 setup, spent over 500 hours using flight simulator gear, and invested thousands of dollars into his interest. All of those experiences made him believe that he had better skills and knowledge than an average pilot.

To learn more about hobbyists who use simulators or RCs, Bored Panda contacted Two Brothers Radio Control (TBRC). TBRC is a source for in-depth reviews on flying model aircrafts, what to expect when buying a new aircraft, and tutorials on how to fly RC planes.

TBRC explained that “flying full-scale versus model-scale isn’t terribly different. It’s actually easier to fly full-scale since you’re in the aircraft itself and have a whole suite of instruments to work with, plus you can see where the trees and other obstacles are from the cockpit. Flying line of sight with a transmitter is significantly more difficult, and requires knowing how to orient your aircraft from the ground in any direction it happens to be flying in.”

“Simulator practice is not too different from flying full-scale aircrafts. Every airliner pilot has gone through quite a bit of flight simulator training as part of their ongoing education, though the kind of simulators used for training full-scale pilots is significantly more complex and far more immersive than your average hobbyist’s equipment in their home office,” TBRC shared.

Pilots also state that flight simulators are useful for giving people an immersive experience of flying a plane. These devices can mimic weather patterns, turbulence, crosswinds, and other phenomena. They’re also a great way to enhance one’s skills and build confidence.

The only problem is that a simulator is not a substitute for practical knowledge. Experts say that although the visual and auditory experiences are highly realistic, the physical sensations often fall short. That’s why pilots need to get Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval before logging certain flight simulator hours as part of training.

According to Flight Training Central, “controls in many simulators are light and typically not adjustable, nor do they change as aerodynamic forces change. And landings? Simulators are not good for teaching landings. There’s many reasons for this, including control feedback, sight picture, sound, etc.” So the OP was way off base when he tried comparing his virtual experience to what a real pilot does.

Image credits: Timur Weber (not the actual photo)

The man took such offense to his wife, saying that he was a fast food chain manager instead of a pilot, that he threw a tantrum when they were going home. He explained that he was insecure about his job and liked being introduced based on his hobby. But his wife stood her ground and told him that he didn’t deserve that professional title.

Even when it comes to resumes, it isn’t common to count a hobby as professional experience. Career coaches explain that private hobbies may help a person develop some skills relevant to a particular job, but they cannot be considered proper work experience. So, it’s baffling why the poster thought that his hobby somehow made him an expert pilot.

Many netizens were shocked when the OP said that just because he didn’t have the title or an overpriced piece of paper, it didn’t mean that he wasn’t qualified. But that’s exactly what it means. Plus, he had never even flown a real plane! We think if he spent as much time getting an actual pilot’s credentials as he did using flight simulators, he’d have nothing to worry about.

Many folks’ lives would probably improve if they could become experts as easily as this guy believed it could be done. If all of the angry and confused comments from Redditors aren’t enough to give the poster a reality check, hopefully, he’ll meet a real pilot who will help him get his head out of the clouds.

If logging 500+ hours into a hobby makes you an expert, what are you an expert at?

Many folks hoped the man was trolling because they couldn’t believe that anyone was so delusional

I'm trying to work out why anyone would feel insecure about managing a restaurant. There's a lot that goes into keeping a fast food place up and running. It's a good job. (and yeah, if this is real, the non-pilot needs some help.)

I think the Americans use the title "manager" for multiple roles, not just the overall boss of an individual establishment, and even the higher roles still don't pay very well, the franchise holder taking the bulk of the profits. So he may be a) Not very well paid and/or b) Not in a very senior position and/or c) Feeling stuck in a rut with no real future career advancement prospects. In any event it's clear that he sees his wife's career as 'better' than his own, so is trying to use this fantasy to impress on her colleagues that he's not the loser that he feels he is. (Again, if it's all real, of course).

As someone who has been using Flight Sim since it was on the Apple II back in 1985 (does that make me his boss?), this story was hilarious, as I'm assuming it was fake. On a serious note, we all have fantasies, but when you start thinking that they are real, especially when interacting with others, you are entering a dangerous mental state.

I generally think all of these are made up, but I actually dated a guy who told everyone, including my PARENTS, that he was a 'composer.'. I never once heard him play a musical instrument. When I asked to hear recordings or see sheet music of his compositions (in like a supportive, I'm interested in you way, not trying to catch him in a lie) he told me he 'burned them in a fit of creative rage' and that I, as an artist, should understand (I really don't). We were together for a year and I never saw him compose anything. The few friends of his I had met told me they also had never heard his compositions or seen him playing an instrument. The whole thing was just so bizarre.

This reminds me of a tv show where they trained people to fake professions and such. In one episode, they took an arrogant sim racer, who thought they would absolutely smash real racing, and tried to train him for a real karting race. He was complitely untrainable because he always thought he knew better. In the race he absolutely sucked, was slowest of the race, and had the trainers just laugh at him from the track side...

There was a recent film called Gran Turismo, which is based on a true story. Nissan decided to start training Gran Turismo (a racing game) players to drive real racing cars. A teenager won the selection process and competed in professional races. He’s driven in over 200 races now.

If this guy is for real (and I strongly suspect it's not) then he needs psychiatric help. Anyone who's ever taken the controls of a plane (I did quite a few hours of PPL training many years ago) would be able to tell you that the sensation of flying, the real feedback from control movements, resulting in the 'plane shifting position, speed, attitude etc. etc. can no way be accurately simulated on any sort of home setup, and not fully even by the huge commercial training rigs that they use as a part of their training.

Boy, is OP delusional! I AM a pilot and I can assure him that nothing he has done even remotely compares to actually flying an airplane, even a single-engine trainer. Also, one doesn’t have to be paid to be a real pilot; some of us are recreational pilots — but we actually fly real honest-to-god airplanes!

Rec pilots are still pilots. But dude was asked what he did FOR A LIVING, and he thought he had the right to say pilot. He could easily have said "right now I manage a restaurant, but my real passion is aviation, and my plan is that within the next XX years to have my license to fly." That acknowledges his hobby without lying and shows admirable ambition to improve his circumstances. Instead, he embarrassed his wife and showed himself to be a tool. It sounds like she was talking up his career by saying there were benefits. No wonder she doesn't tell her coworkers about him! And hundreds of hours on a flight simulator? Amateur. I have over 2000 hours racked up on Elite Dangerous (not proud of that). My ex has over 5000 hours logged. I think he is proud, but he's my ex for a reason. Still, neither of us tell people we own a fleet of spaceships and travel the galaxies, taking down space pirates for a living.

Dude. It doesn't matter how much time and money you have put into your sim hobby, that does not make it the same thing as being a pilot. If you want to make sims your career, then start streaming them or something, and introduce yourself as "sim-pilot streamer". If you want to introduce yourself a pilot, take flying lessons, learn to fly, and get your licence. You are not only completely delusional, you seriously embarassed your wife at her work function by contradicting her, lying about her "bad memory" and lying about your career. You are unquestionably the giant AH. Apologise. Profusely. Take some flying lessons. Learn to differentiate between reality and a simulation.

Do you think he would pass the mental fitness exam for a pilot's license? Those are quite stringent. TBH, I wonder if that's why he hasn't actually taken steps to get his license. Something within his deluded soul realizes that he's not banging on all eight. But the appropriate response to that is medical treatment to achieve as much stability as possible, not to emotionally and verbally abuse one's spouse and cling to ridiculous delusions.

Not even close. Flight training is 10 to 20 grand just for the "entry level" license that doesn't let you fly near clouds. And owning an airplane is often more expensive than owning a supercar. If you want to make it your career and you don't start out as a pilot in the Air Force, plan on spending over $100k and then working for poverty wages for years. For what it costs to be a frugal pilot with a cheap airplane, you could build a great sim rig. For what it costs to go commercial, you could build one good enough to rent out for money.

1/2 I hope this is fake, but I have known people this delusional. Granted, one of them lived in a group home under 24/7 1:1 care for his safety and that of the public. He would rage if you told him he wasn't a cop. One night when he was calm, I asked him why he insisted he was a cop when we both knew it wasn't true. It came down to the notion that he wanted it to be true, and he liked saying it because it made him feel like it was real, and he figured if he said it enough it would become real. That kind of broke my heart.

2/2 I went to university with a guy who would sincerely discuss his amazing feats driving Indy cars for hours. A lot of people believed him, he was so passionate and detailed. Even I believed him for a while (I knew nothing about car racing). Well, turns out he watched a lot of YouTube and played a lot of rFactor. But he INSISTED that because he knew so much, he was an Indy car driver, and he would get violently angry if anyone contradicted him. He did not have developmental disabilities like the guy in my first example, but you could not tell him that he wasn't an Indy car driver without risking furniture getting thrown. I took to just tuning him out for the most part, but keeping hypervigilant to his moods. If he started breathing a certain way, I'd GTF out of there. I don't know what happened to him, but I sincerely hope he's well-medicated now. Or maybe he got married, switched to flight simulators and has taken to ranting on Reddit....

"I'm a cop" has never gone to any training but does know how to drive, shoot a gun. And made a fake cop car in his garage to test drive. Or let's do a 1-1 "I'm a truck driver." But doesn't even have a driving license. Its great to have passions, hobbies, and aspirations. But being into something to the point you've sunk hundrdds of hours does not make you a professional. I'm a certified medical attendent, but i would never say im a healthcare professional- even though I litterally DO have the certfucation to do so. It's more than just what you know, but also if you are using it as a career.

As a licensed Private Pilot, I think this man should get in the air with a flight instructor to see just how different real flying is compared to a simulator. He is NOT more knowledgeable then an actual pilot! I am wondering what his wife means by his not being a professional pilot. Granted he is not a pilot on any level, but if she means professional because he is not a commercial airline pilot or a military pilot she is wrong. The minute you get that license you are professional. With the training both in the air and in ground school, you totally earn that license. You can't fly for money as a Private Pilot but you can fly for a company you work for.

My BIL and my BFF's husbands both went to college and flight school to become pilots. They've both flown real planes. They've also both never officially become pilots because they decided the life of a pilot wasn't one they wanted. Neither of them are, or ever claim to be, a pilot. A pilot (even a pilot who isn't a professional but only flies as a hobby) still has to get their pilots license and keep it updated, which can only be done by routinely taking flight tests (both on paper and in the air). You won't get a pilots license for being good on a flight simulator, because you're not actually a pilot. Just like I won't get away with shooting people in real life just because I'm really good at Call of Duty.

He put in enough effort and time to become a pilot. I see it like this, you can be considered a driver if you pass the test and earn your license. Just because you haven't bought a car yet, doesn't mean your not a driver.

Greg asked what you do for a living. No matter how many hours you put into a simulation, your living is not made from piloting and you are, therefore, not a pilot for a living.

As someone who spent countless hours in Football Manager I gotta say: I feel ya bro. The fact that I haven't kicked a football since 1997 and never managed an actual team doesn't mean I should be denied the World Cup, dammit! But seriously: how delusional can you actually be?

YTA. Never flown a plane, don't have a pilot's license, not a pilot. He said it best in the 2nd paragraph, aviation enthusiast. Calling yourself a Pilot as if it is your profession sounds like the equivalent of stolen valor. You wouldn't say I've logged 500 hrs playing the game Operation, now I'm a surgeon.

This feels like a crazy variant of those people who sneak into a hospital and pretend to be a doctor.

I've watched every episode of Air Crash Investigations, so I guess this means I'm both a pilot and an investigator for the NTSB. I'm so proud of myself!

If you have never flown a real plane and only “flew” in simulators, then you’re not a real pilot.

Well from now on I’ll be telling people that I’m a Pokémon master. I mean, I’ve played all the games after all! Just ignore the fact that I’ve never entered a tournament and would get destroyed in competitive play

I had a boyfriend who swore he was an expert at some martial art (I've forgotten which one) because he read an article in a magazine about it once.

I've been flying for 36ish years. I have my ATP, MEI, CFII, CFI, AGI and a few thousand hours teaching other people how to fly. The original poster is what I would call a 'Numpty' or 'Complete Wanker' at best.

I have watched every episode of Grey's Anatomy. Twice. I am a surgeon now. Somebody, pass me a scalpel so I can have a go at an appendectomy.

In an update OP has stated that his wife is taking a 2nd job in order to pay, to send him to flight school to become an actual pilot. Although it seems he merely wants the official title, not the actual career.

Until you've solo'ed, you are not a pilot. Until you've actually taken off, landed, and been trained in inflight emergencies, you are not a pilot. Until you've flown cross country, made night landings, and passed your certification check ride with an FAA certified instructor, you are not a pilot. What you are, sir, is a certified AH...

This has to be fake? No one can be so dense! Reminds me to Rachel's (Friends) comment to her sister when she said she was a decorator after decorating her father's office: "i went to the zoo yesterday. Now I'm a Koala bear"

If you are not licensed to fly a plane, you are not a pilot. I feel sorry for this deluded person that he needs to feel validated, but I would never agree with him for any reason by calling him a pilot.
