This Artist Reimagined 10 Cartoons With Black Characters, And The Result Triggers Some People

Reimagined cartoon characters are a dime-a-dozen these days, how many more times can Disney princesses take on a different guise? That’s not to say it’s easy though. While some artists give a change of outfit or maybe a new hairstyle, capturing a uniquely different ‘feel’ of a popular cartoon character can be a real challenge.

Artist Tyron Handy has managed to do just that, giving famous cartoons like The Simpsons And Family Guy black characters, and doing it so well that people are calling for the animated series to be made in real life. “Most recreations that I see are just people putting designer clothes and jewelry onto the characters and changing their skin color. My recreations really look like they could be parallel versions of the characters,” he told.

“There weren’t a lot of cartoons that I felt represented me much growing up — most black cartoon characters and tv shows were stereotypical, slightly racial discriminating side characters and the best friend of the white main character. Black kids need to be able to see more representations of themselves in media.”

These cartoon reimaginings are a side project to Tyron’s weekly comic. ‘Apple Dapple Tactics‘ is based around the main character Ty, a systems engineer for Coca-Cola (although his mama says he ain’t got no job) and his complicated relationships. Check it out!

As a Caucasian American who loves these shows, I AM INCENSED! Not by the Blackification (is that a word? Screw it; it is now!) of these cartoons. They're awesome. I'm pissed at the racist a******s that find these images so offensive. FFS people, who cares?? First off, 100% of these characters are FICTIONAL. Secondly, the world is a rainbow. You can either accept it and enjoy it or keep staring at the storm clouds in misery.

I love how well he nailed the art styles and I know that my sister would be happier if she had colored (especially Indian) cartoon people. For me, it was more books. Growing up, I only ever found one book with an Indian main protagonist, everyoone else was white (and occasionally black). I needed more of those. I think representation does matter a lot and this guy is not racist.

He didn’t nail it. He just painted them brown. Not that hard. By the way half the shows he did it to weren’t white people. They are yellow or animals. So your point is invalid.

Just as this artist drew ALL of these characters black, the original (probably white) artists drew them all white. It isn't racism. It's just that people tend to draw and represent themselves. I mean, is this artist racist for not drawing them Asian? Middle Eastern? Native American?...you see?

To oppress people, to make them feel bad to be the color they are, to destroy their culture is not redrawing characters in your own skin tone. To do all that is to "buy" humans and take them away from their homes so they cannot keep their own history, punish them when they try to do anything that involves their culture, keep basic rights from them once you 'let them free' because "geez isn't it good enough that the North won?", don't allow them to see or represent themselves in the nation's widely consumed media. When a minority does something like this, it's not an attack on white people and it's not to say you should feel bad for being white. It says I'm gonna try to make me and others like me feel good for a brief moment. I guess I am just tired of modern white people getting angry because they personally didn't do anything bad to others. No one is attacking you for being white. Just understand that the white people of this country (the US) destroyed a lot of minority's cultures

Honestly, as a white person I've never ever felt like I needed to feel bad about being white. I think the people who say they're supposed to feel bad are typically actually racist, and don't like that their racism is becoming less accepted. So instead of facing the kind of people they are and trying to change and grow, they try to make themselves the victims by saying that they're being oppressed and are meant to feel bad for being born white. That's just my take. I've yet to meet another white person who says they're being degrading for their whiteness that isn't a racist.

I think it's weird that they're all about diversity when kids are younger, like 3-7, but then after that it's all white. I also think it's weird that people who aren't white have to be so painfully bathed in the ethnic group the directors are trying to convey and it's clearly not even intentional. Like an Indian character doesn't have to eat curry every day or a Latino person doesn't have to be a loud colorful individual. Other races eat pizza and pay taxes. Stop acting like they're not people.

My sister and I loved Nadia (Fushigi no Umi no Nadia). She's as dark as us in summer. Anyway, regardless of skin colour, honestly, when I was a kid I didn't feel that close to these caricatures. I did enjoy the cartoons, but it was the semi-realistic style that made me feel truly connected. We played pretend as our favourite anime, super hero and Disney characters, not the caricatures from Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. No hate, btw. They're all good cartoons their own way. It's just something I wanted to add to the issue of representation and how kids feel about it. Looking forward to seeing more diversity in protagonists of various kinds of fiction.

Honestly I think it cool, and I agree-to some level. I do think there should be more black protagonists and such, but sometimes it’s to much. I am white (not trying to be racist at all) and I find it a bit overwhelming when I say something like “Oh your braid is a bit crooked do you want me to redo that for you? “ and I get yelled at for being “Racist” now I do know that this guy isn’t being like that, and I admire him! But I’d just like to get that out there. I know racism is still a thing, but I do get scared. When I walk out I see many people, and I really am not trying to be rude or racist but I’m often seeing people being accused of being racist by black people. I wish that white or black people or anything in between wouldn’t be racist. That’s just my opinion and I wish everyone would be equal.

When you think color matters you will have a big opinion on this. If you don’t then you won’t. My only thought was, to be fair and balanced, he should have made the characters like the little girl in Rugrats, who are already black, white.

I think what this artist did was genius! It really shows just how bothered white people are when the spotlight isn't on them. Black people are allowed to have positive representation, just like how little white girls are allowed to have an entire catalog of white princesses. Why is it suddenly a problem when black people strive to create positive role models for their community? Why can't black girls have black princesses to look up to? Or beautiful black fairies and mermaids to admire? Why is there ALWAYS some ignorant fool that cries "racist!" when black people make artwork that focuses on black excellence? The only thing that's racism is white people's issue with the media representing black people in a positive and impact way that doesn't revolve around negative stereotypes.

I see at least once instance that portraying someone as black who was not black as one of the few acceptable double standards. Portraying Jesus as a Caucasian seems to have a subtle message that white = holy. Portraying Jesus as Black creates a universal message that Jesus loves everyone. This is not as clear when portraying cartoon characters as black, Is there any positive message in showing the Simpsons (who are yellow) as black? Please explain the message to me?

Why not? Literally most art is made because why not. Also, Jesus was middle eastern. Asian, Buddhist, muslim, black, Hispanic, white etc Jesus all exist because people like seeing people of influence of their race. If you must have a message, it's equality, pure and simple.

Most people have over washed the wood “racist” so much no one even has a clue of the meaning any longer - most people aren’t racist however “every” person is “bigoted” in some fashion - but that’s can be a good thing as well as a bad thing - if it’s used to separate yourself from someone else showing your own uniqueness then it’s a good thing but if used to point out the deference in a negative context about another it’s a bad thing - but a true racist doesn’t like anyone of a deferent type for no other reason than they are of a deferent type - so make sure you know the motives before slinging the word racist around because that could very well make you the racist.

Why do we still keep focusing on the color of our skin? You all know we base our opinions of each other on the largest human organ? Or will there be a time, we base our opinions on a liver? On a kidney? The only organ we should base our opinions of, is the heart. Our heartbeat connects us with the rest.

So I think this is a form of racism, firstly as a white person born after apartheid. I am not racist. I have been brought up in a country and world that see color as a form of inferiority. It would be nice to see past all the color, yet here you are throwing it in my face....I as a white person, I did not make the series and animations you see, I was again simply brought up with it and enjoyed it. Honestly....my blunt straight forward answer to all the black people born after their oppression is get over it. In fact you did not even witness it,neither did you live with it. You have been influenced by people around you...including foremost your parents. This includes all the crazy white supremacists. I am not taking sides here. Yet as a black person, you irrecoverably reversing roles as a punisher of someones color or heritage. Take South Africa for example.....Its called BEE, basically means that if you black you get the job first. If you white you come last.Talk about roleplay

Without ignoring yeas of stereotypes (which are dissolving now), non-black characters are a practical solution about color contrast and color palettes. Some, like The Simpsons' yellow skin, are the result of lucky incidents. It's really sad tha a "cartoonist, illustrator and comic artist" with almost 20k fans is so ignorant about his own job.

Because it's their choice. Their hair. If you want to take care of and deal with all of the issues that come with it, do so. But saying things like that is like asking why asian men often always wear their hair short and styled, or white dudes with their waves and poofy parts, or middle easterners with their long haired men (and women). It's hair, whatever. The diamond stud in the ear symbolized wealth and thus freedom and has stuck around. Cultural differences are fine and to be celebrated, not questioned and white washed.

Why not appreciate cartoons and tv shows that do focus on black people instead? I remember I loved to watch The Boondocks some years back, maybe a tad violent but still hillarious.

It’s funny to me how all you black sons of bitches like to complain all the time and forgot is was a white person that got your freedom. Or did you forget that the civil war was fought in your name. If you all don’t like the country then get the f**k out. There now you can downvote this s**t. All my other nice comments were downvoted so here something for all of you.

Kind of f'd up that the already black characters stayed black. And why change characters that weren't any color at all? The Simpsons were yellow specifically to not be white. Goof Troop are animals with no discernable color, etc. I love seeing more original characters of varied heritage in the media, Black Panther showed off what can be done so well. But this seems like it's JUST meant to egg on racism, not fix it.

Yeh great but he should make his own characters. Making already established characters black is just obvious and desperate. The Simpsons for e.g. are white grrr I mean yellow..they are culturally white. Painting them black isn't going to change that you'd have tho change the whole script..it just stinks of petty b******t. Make your own but make the scripting funny original and as popular as the Simpsons. There's more to cartooning than what's colour you cast the set...doh!

I'm pissed at the racist a******s that find these images so offensive. FFS people, who cares?? First off, 100% of these characters are FICTIONAL. Secondly, the world is a rainbow.

Michelangelo copied other artists before him. Memes and most modern art copies a lot of random things. Copying art to make something new has been happening for since art was a thing. Try again.

Instead of turning white characters black, why don't we create original black characters? Just a thought Btw, Robin looks like The Fresh Prince Of Belair (Will Smith) 😄

Why not appreciate cartoons and tv shows that do focus on black people instead? I remember I loved to watch The Boondocks some years back, maybe a tad violent but still hillarious.

Where is this artist saying that he doesn't do that as well? He's just re imagining the characters.

So when a person actually creates a show and all the characters are white, they're egging on racism?

Yeh great but he should make his own characters. Making already established characters black is just obvious and desperate. The Simpsons for e.g. are white grrr I mean yellow..they are culturally white. Painting them black isn't going to change that you'd have tho change the whole script..it just stinks of petty b******t. Make your own but make the scripting funny original and as popular as the Simpsons. There's more to cartooning than what's colour you cast the set...doh!

If someone did white interpretation of Cleveland Show or C Bear & Jamal or the Proud Family there would be all kinds of screaming about racism.

Ahh, it's almost like white people have not been systematically oppressed and black people have.

Only a black dude would watermark his artwork to death - wonder why you're worried so much about having it stolen
