Woman Takes Anti-Selfies Stance By ‘Dying’ At Famous Landmarks And They’re Strangely Hilarious (30 Pics)
You go to a famous landmark, you take a selfie picture in front of it and upload it to Instagram. Soon, your mom and everyone else starts complimenting your looks, and the world wonder in the background becomes just that—a background. But artist Stephanie Leigh Rose has found a way to document her travels while keeping it all about the historical sites she's visiting.

"The entire point of STEFDIES, is that the viewer is allowed to participate in the image-, whether that is by imagining the circumstances of the surrounding image, or in recreating the STEFDIES pose in their own cool photos." Stepahnie told Bored Panda. "My long hair (and swimsuit in selected photos) would allude to the fact I am a female, but outside of a viewer coming to one of my gallery shows and meeting me personally, I prefer to keep STEFDIES neutral and free of age, nationality, politic, socioeconomic status. STEFDIES is a character of its own, and I invite people to connect with that, and interpret the scenes as they wish. Part of the joy and humor of STEFDIES, is no-one knows exactly what the hell is going on, and that’s pretty much a direct reflection of real life in general."
Stefdies At Myrtos Beach
A STEFDIES photo is a moment in time. There is no preparation; Stephanie doesn't set anything up or use props, the photo ideas are as real as it gets. "All STEFDIES images occur spontaneously in my daily life," the artist said. "The images the viewer happens to see are the 25% of images that are useable. This is why a STEFDIES image is the opposite of a selfie. A selfie has controlled conditions, specific lighting, makeup/hair/wardrobe, an agenda, and is focused on the individual personality- it is a contrived and manipulated image distorted to achieve a desired result. STEFDIES is the polar opposite- I get one chance to get the shot, if it doesn’t happen, c'est la vie. We have one life to live, and we don’t get re-do’s- and i would like to think i try to capture that feeling, that fleeting sense of life and its impermanence, in my photos."
Stefdies At Brunate Lighthouse
"There was an organic evolution to STEFDIES. The early STEFDIES photos were humor snapshots of my life, pretty much in times I was completely exhausted and amused by the situations I found myself in, and wanted to capture these moments in time, to be able to remember and reflect on those points in my life that seems utterly ridiculous. So STEFDIES has always been a direct reflection of my desire to hold onto these seemingly minor or huge moments of my life, that I knew would be washed away to the ravages of time or memory, if i didn’t capture them in their proper moment. Never perfect, as perfection is not what I aim for, but merely the reality of the situation in all of its imperfections."
Stefdies With Brexit
"As I posted some of these interesting photos, I received an incredible response from friends and strangers alike, something in the ridiculousness of these poses, or the reactions of the passer-by," Stephanie continued. "It brought them joy they wrote, it made their day a little bit brighter and brought them a much needed laugh. I realized I wanted to continue putting something positive into the world, while at the same time unique using art to synthesize my feelings and thoughts regarding our impermanence on this earth. The official STEFDIES slogan is 'leave a mark.' I'd like to think I’m doing that."
Stefdies Near The Golden Gate Bridge
"For me as an artist and individual, I push myself to take these photos (in the most uncomfortable of situations) as it allows me to participate in capturing a moment in time physically as well as mentally and emotionally. I have to totally commit to being 'in the moment' to get that one shot."
What's crazy is that this level of mindfulness allows Stephanie to remember each and every STEFDIES shot she has even taken. Who she was with, what she saw and experienced. All of it. "I have to take myself out of my one head and get into the moment. Believe me, it’s really hard not to be present when you are face down eating dirt, and could be tempted at any time."
Stefdies In Monopoli
"I want to keep producing images that stir the imagination and produce joy for the viewer. I also want to continue to produce photos that are all age appropriate, and inclusive. For example, many school groups follow the STEFDIES series, as they considerate a good tool to teach young adults there are alternatives to the perfectionism of selfies and online culture."
"STEFDIES welcomes everyone to participate, and doesn’t care about about status or perfection," Stephanie explained. "I hope that STEFDIES promotes the idea of 'everyone is prefect exactly how they are, and not a damn thing has to be changed.'"
Stefdies At Notre Dame
Stephanie couldn't remember when exactly she took the first STEFDIES picture, but said it was about eight years ago. Since then, there have been a lot of them. "As I mentioned earlier, there are many attempts but not all photos come to fruition. I would say [I took] over 1000 different images, but [only] a few hundred useable ones, and out of that only a handful that make it out on social media. One of my original intentions was to have a series of coffee table books that chronicle the STEFDIES series, so many images have not been released as they are being reserved for the book series."
Stefdies At Kötlujökull Glacier
She could have found something more tongue-friendly to die at... 😒
And since the artist doesn't set anything up, a lot of strangers 'participate' in STEFDIES. But the way they feel about it differs from place to place. "It really depends on the city [and] culture where I take the shot," Stephanie said. "In Paris, for example, no one even noticed as they just assumed I was a crazy artist. Which I really liked, as it allowed me to run around the city and get these amazing shots. I do sort of worry though if anything actually did happen to me, if anyone would help? There have only been about 5 times in all the years I’ve done STEFDIES, that people came over to ask if I was OK."
Stefdies With Friends At Her Art Exhibit
And Stephanie's message has caught on. "STEFDIES has quite the following - as it should - they are super fun to do and always get a good laugh! We have a few hashtags people use - #stefdieswithme #stefdiesfan, etc. Many people will send me their interpretations of the STEFDIES pose, which I love!"
Stefides At La Tour Eiffel
And if you want to join the movement, it's not that complicated. "Just have fun, and commit to the process!" Stephanie said. "Don't be afraid to look silly, and remember to be safe. Many don’t actually get the pose correct, as it requires the face to be completely flat on the ground (not to the side) but most people don’t like their mouth touching the disgusting items on the ground ... and rightfully so" The artist said you shouldn't wait for the perfect time or the perfect shot. "Just be yourself and that is good enough, and at the end of the day, incredibly interesting."

I love it!! But I just can't stop thinking about how dirty every surface is that you put face on. And i'm not even a germophobe...
Instead of usual attention-wh*res-pictures or 1 of those countless moronic selfies, she nails this together with a large dose of dark humor :-) BP, more of these please!
People sure have a stick up their a$$. I thought these were funny. A unique way to take a tourist photo. I'm sure other photo's were made for memories of the trip..but I think people calling this stupid or getting freaked out about her laying on dirty floors need to untwist their undies and realize that she's just having a bit of fun.
"How to get famous in 3 Steps" or so. I don't like it. I want to look at my old pictures and get nostalgic and see my beautiful younger face. I wouldn't want to see, how stupid i was lying down on dirty floors, trying to get famous with death
Nobody's asking you to kiss her. If she wants to lay that close to filth..that's her business. And you assume that these are the only photos she took on her vacations. You know what they say about people that assume......
Load More Replies...Only additional questions I have, is Steph wealthy? How does she afford to travel to all these different exotic places world-wide just for a picture.
Is it bad that I really liked these and want to try it myself at all the landmarks here in Victoria, Australia? I got a morbid streak a mile wide..
Love these, but they might be tricky for solo travelers to pull off, lol.
This is hilarious. And extensive! She's got quite collection and I applaud her devotion to the theme.
Her dedication to play dead in the water is astonishing, for me personally. Now she needs to go to the Louvre in front of the Mona Lisa
That might be impossible given the number of people in the room - she'd be trampled by a tour bus group or six. Maybe death on the Louvre stairways by Winged Victory? Or more accurately in the long lines to get in the place by the pyramid?
Load More Replies...What will happen when she actually DOES die. Will we know? Never see her face. Could be a doppelgänger....
Stef and I have very similar travel profiles... and the same sense of humour. If you are out there Stef, contact me, I can tell you good places to die in Mexico City and Montreal.
AWESOME. Please add some fake blood next time and I think you've got yourself a niche porn category!
I'm guessing her very last anti-selfie will be titled simply "StefDied". It will be a pic of her in a coffin.
All hilarious except for Golden Gate bridge since that's an actual suicide spot
Just wondered why she has her legs wide open on each photo.... Do people die like that....
As with so many of these posts.....Where Do These People Get the Money to Travel So Much?
Don't like it, find it stupid. Of course it is her right to get as goofy as she wants, but this kind of behaviour makes other people invulnerable to the fact, that someone might need help lying on the ground.
After the first few, they became boring. Lots of pictures with a splayed-out face-down body in them. It would have been more interesting if she had varied the "deaths," to give us something to look forward to in each picture.
This is way better than the guy showing his penis all over the world in photos. Death 1 - Penis 0.
Notice the people in the background, they don't care if there is a 'dead' body lying on the ground. Sad.
I think she is very fortunate to be able to travel to these different countries and have a load of fun while visiting. She is an intuitive performance artist and sets up these photos very well. So unique, funny, and creative!
bahahahahahaha! now, that is funny! I can hear my daughter's voice - she says this a lot! thanks for an honest one-word reaction!
Load More Replies...Gosh, from the comments, I’ve discovered how humor-impaired people have become. These are funny!
or she could just take regular photos and ACTUALLY keep it about the landmark.
she does, she said so - this has become her vacation hobby - and if you ask me, I don't really see her after the first few photos. She seems to position herself that the viewer really takes in the whole surroundings. But if you can't see that, your loss. Don't hate!
Load More Replies...One. More. Way. To 'Gain' Attention. I pity the human race (to the bottom).
Am I the only one who's not gullible here and knew that almost all of her pictures are photoshopoed? They're so obvious.
Even if they are, who cares? It's still funny! And maybe they aren't, hmmmm?
Load More Replies...Too Funny. Are we sure she just doesn't have a drinking problem ? lol
Very funny. But here's a hint, "selfies" are not compulsory. I've never taken one in my life. I'd rather take a pic of a scene without my face in it. Did someone else take the pictures for her, or did she set up a timer?
These are funny as hell, but I wouldn’t categorise them as putting the location back in focus, they make the background location even more secondary and superfluous than the average selfie. I totally love them though.
Hilarious! How often do people try to help or revive you? So fun, some of them made me lol. I particularly like the crowded ones, with folks looking at you like you've lost the plot
These photos make me want to watch "Harold and Maude" again. (Harold's hobby is pretending his death in various ways, and his mother is not amused)
Yes, after a few of the same pix I was like "Close your legs already!" I'm not a prude; it's just distracting and detracts from her theme.
Load More Replies...I wonder what the famous landmarks are in the images, because in searching for the dead body pose, said landmarks became the background...
She most likely has all sorts of diseases from the south Platte river trail. No joke that river flows syphilis and cancer.
Good concept and idea but poor execution. People don't really die in a spread eagle position. Most of these came off fake as a result
Do you think she really wants people to think she is dead? That is why the pose is so exaggeratedly ridiculous, right?
Load More Replies...I'm sick and tired of selfies! One or two is OK, but people who take them all over the place come across as narcissists. You hear from time to time about people who die while trying to take selfies. That's why I like this parody.
The real issue for me is that her arms are in totally the wrong place, no protective posture in any of the pictures, shame we don't see the proper girl though.
I'm sorry for her, but in Italy we have the original "artist", she is the second. We have FOTOMORTO!!!!!!!! Ops Bored Panda, this time you're failed :( :( talk about him
And recently people also have died while reading. Also people die while walking, bicycling, eating, driving, horse riding, dancing, performing dangerous jobs. Don't forget that people also have died while doing nothing. AND also (some lucky) people die while having sex. It is not like she pissed, did a nr. 2, was naked or even had sex right on top of a national monument, she just took a very (funny) picture.
Load More Replies...Your comment of yelling and screaming at a woman that was simply taking a different kind of photo shows that you experienced something tragic in your life. And while I sympathize with your pain, not all people respond the same way to tragedy. I spent my college years looking at crime scene photos and learning about different ways people die. I think most forensic scientists would find these pics humorous..dark..but humorous. I understand why you may not like them, but BP shouldn't have to remove it. If you don't like what you see, then don't look. Just like the people that boycott sponsors if there is a tv show that conflicts with their viewpoints. If you don't like it...don't watch. When they lose enough viewership, the show will be cancelled.
