There are many, many challenges about drawings on Instagram: Mermay, March of Robots, DTIYS, etc.

The only one I enjoy participating in is Inktober… Until I discovered this new challenge some artists I follow have been doing. It’s called the emoji challenge and it's simple: you ask for emojis and make a drawing out of them!

I think this is a really challenging way to draw. So I decided to try and ask my community for emoji combinations (2 or 3). And I got a lot of emojis! I've done two rounds so far, the first using alcohol markers and the second using acrylic markers to get more vivid colors.

It's funny how I can stare at some emojis for sooo much time without thinking of anything, and then one day, there is an idea! This is a really good exercise to stimulate inspiration and it’s really fun to do because it’s taken me out of my comfort zone.

I hope you'll like the result!

I’m a 35-year-old art director based in Paris, and I draw whenever I have time for myself!

I think my journey as an artist started in 2017, when I began posting my drawings on Instagram. The feedback I received pushed me to draw more, think more and post more to improve! I guess it gave me the motivation to devote myself seriously to drawing.

More recently (2021) I decided to create a TikTok page, exclusively dedicated to these emoji challenges! And it works pretty well, people seem to like it and I receive a lot of submissions.

In fact, the most difficult part of this challenge was also my favorite! It’s about finding an idea. It may seem easy, but some combinations were a big brain teaser. And that’s what I like! Finding the right idea to make different emojis work together is really overwhelming.

Even aliens should be able to enjoy the scenery while eating a delicious meal.

Apart from the conception, I would say that it took me about 3 hours to create one drawing. Once I have the idea, I spent quite some time looking for a good composition and then I try different color combinations in order to find the best one. Finally, it takes me 1h30-2h to finish the final drawing.

About drawing, I love the fact that nothing is impossible. It’s like the power of giving life… Except that it doesn’t leave the paper. And what I like for people to take away from my work is my ideas. The best compliment for me is "hey, I didn’t think about that, this is smart and funny!"

I will continue the emojis challenge as a common thread but I will soon go back to my color teams and finally achieve the final round. And I intend to make new illustrations for my "First day at the beach" series. Stay tuned!
