Arnold, you are wrong—-and this is coming from a Boomer (late boomer 1960). Authoritarian parenting teaches kids nothing except how to avoid punishment. It’s also why so many kids go complete non-contact with their parents. Hell, it’s why I left home and went 100% NC with MY parents in January 1979, shortly after I hit 18! They’re both dead now, and all I felt when they were both gone was a great weight lifting off me. What you propose is absolutely NOT the way. Authoritative parenting, which is neither heavy-handed nor coddling, IS the way. Reasonable punishments that fit the “crime”. Reasonable rules. Being reasonable altogether, instead of playing like some kind of tin jesus and insisting on 100% obedience. Raising your children in a loving home instead of what amounts to a prison they can finally leave when they’re 18. You’ll be amazed at how your children will actually want to follow your reasonable rules, because they know you’re not the household dictator. You’ll have a great relationship with your children, because they won’t hate and resent you. As long as you manage to find the happy medium, and don’t become an overbearing helicopter parent, your kids will be fine.

With all due respect, there’s nothing wrong with chilling instead of hustling. We are so wealthy as a human kind, it’s about time to stop worrying and find happiness in small things. Sure, if it’s your desire to pursue greatness then go for it. Just don’t expect everyone to follow.

I'm confused by the comment about kids not being able to handle Animal Farm and Huckleberry Finn. The kids are not the ones banning books.

Deliberately subjecting your kids to misery out of spite does not teach them resilience... it teaches them that the people who are supposed to love and protect them will hurt them. Then they grow up to have such major psychological issues they don't have functional adulthoods. To teach children responsibility and resilience, be an example to them and work with them.

Does he think the kids gave themselves the participation trophies? His generation or his children's generation came up with the idea. Think about that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving children a little something for participation. This boosts self esteem and confidence and maybe they will want to earn the ribbon next time. There does come a time when participation trophies are inappropriate and this is typically when kids are older.

Snowflakes? I’m sorry but do you have anxiety that’s the same level as a 50’s insane asylum patient? Do you deal with the trauma from school shootings? Do you have so much depression constantly surrounding you that your classmates and maybe even yourself are thinking about Killing themselves or cutting? I get it, your guys’ life was tough too. But don’t take it out on us. We’ve recognized that emotions are good, that trauma and anxiety and depression are unfortunately a part of life, and we’re already working toward fixing that. Maybe instead of breaking us down, the older generations could share some things that Gen Z and Gen Alpha can take into the future? Some hard earned wisdom? The whole point of learning from your elders is to learn how they lived, appreciate what they went through, incorporate what you can, and use that to help yourself grow. We can’t do those things if we’re constantly getting torn down.

The problem is that Schwarzenegger is mostly familiar with the kids that he meets around where he lives. Yes, the kids of the wealthy are like that. Both those who are on the Left and on the Right. When you are super wealthy, you live in a bubble and never have to hear or se anything that you don't like. Every other kid, meaning the other 95%, deal with life, do chores, usually work either for a living or for spending money, and actually are willing to engage with people with whom they disagree.

I am not in the mood to argue so I am not commenting directly, but there are some people in this section who are saying how "this generation is unwilling to work" and I just want to say that we aren't unwilling, we just hate the system. We are human, not robots. Also, pardon my revolutionary way of thinking, but we deserve a living wage as well. I am not offended BTW, I just realize that some of the older generation people here are...not very smart. ❄ Let's see how many boomer "snowflake" downvotes I get from this comment. 😉

I can see two sides, yes many kids are pampered and think they can take a mental health day from work for being misgendered or someone disagreing with them. God they are exausting to teach. The second lot are holding down 3 jobs just to pay rediculous rent and are living off beans and rice. There has to be a middle ground?
