“Because No One Would Buy My Photos, Here They Are For Free. Mosul 2017”
As the Battle of Mosul rages on, so does the race between photographers trying to sell snapshots of the conflict to media outlets. Kainoa Little couldn’t find a buyer for his photos, but he decided to share them online anyway – and they tell a harrowing story of struggle and survival.
The Shoreline, Washington-based photographer specializes in war zones, and was in Mosul in April 2017 to document Iraqi Federal Police efforts to liberate the city from ISIL militants. Heavy clashes were underway in the Old City, and causing civilians to flee in mass numbers. Little’s photos capture a vivid range of emotions; the anguish of the refugees leaving their homes, the determination of the soldiers protecting them, and the sheer chaos plaguing all of those involved, to name just a few.
Though Mosul is not yet completely free, the Iraqi forces have made significant headway in reclaiming the ancient city from ISIL. We can only hope that an end to this brutal fight is near, and that Kainoa Little has better luck on the press photography market next time around. Check out his compelling photos below.

Your comment is touching. I am glad there are people (like you) who care about what's happening there.

Human life is so short to waste with war... Why can't we just enjoy the life and left this world in peace? Why do people try to own everything instead of sharing... My parents always told that being a kid is the most beautiful thing in life. Because when you get older, you realize all the s**t that people do. And start hating everything. I'm so sad that those kids even can not live the beauty of their childhood...
These photos should remind us all of how lucky we are . Not only are we free, our standard of living makes the poorest of those among us rich by the world's standards. We have color TV's, laptops, iPads & pods, smart phones, gaming systems galore, enough food to waste , cars, enough clothes to keep us warm in winter & cool in summer , houses or apartments not torn apart by war , or lacking in necessities like electricity , or air conditioning, etc. Yet, we gripe . We should be coming together as a nation , to restore the USA , to the Republic our forefathers worked so hard to enact.
I agree with your sentiment to be grateful for what we have. But I disagree with some of your statements, for example: "Not only are we free". We are not as free as we like to think we are.The US has less than 5% of the world’s population, yet we have almost 25% of the world’s total prison population. I challenge anyone to look at models in terms of incarceration rates around the world. You might be surprised at where we stand. As far as the poorest among us being " rich by the world's standard", that is a question of perspective. Around 12.5% of all Americans live in poverty (ca $20k/yr- family of 4). 40% of those live in extreme poverty (ca $10k/yr- family of 4). So whether you live in a hut in Africa or in a slum in the US, hunger, safety, etc are still a problem. You're not living any better. I don't believe we can call ourselves a great country until things like this stop. We have the resources, just not the will. We would rather just say how great we are than actually be great.

Yeah well most of our latest refugees are 20-year-old men looking for a better life and free money etc. Kids and women? Not really that many! It's breaking my heart seeing children in those conditions while we have 20yo men here whining about food and yes, some of them have showed their gratitude by raping local women!

I'm amazed that no press agency or new outlet will by these photos, if however he has a photo of one the numerous modern oxygen thieves such as the Krapashians or one of the Love Island cast he'd be paid handsomely. Disgusted but not surprised.
This world is very strange, people who are living in war are dreaming of peace. i wonder if they remember the time they lived in peace.
this is awful..that old blind man running with that little girl was heart breaking :(
People are writing all these young adult novels which describe scenes like these, and it's like... it's happening, right now, all the time, it's not fiction, people are suffering, people are dying. I always thought that such a crude thing, us cooped up in our warm houses, writing about this type of misery while people across the world are living it. Not saying it's bad to write about it or anything, but I wish people didn't have to live it. I don't know, it makes me feel powerless. The only thing we can do is not turn our backs on people who are coming here to get away from all of it and realize we'd do the exact same thing. But even then it's hard to make any real difference when the government is opposed to accepting refugees. Democracy... the dictatorship of the majority.
The point is, that there is evidence that after reaching certain percentage, certain minority is not peaceful anymore. certain minority radicalizes and demands changes in their favor. and after reaching another certain ercentage, the same certain minority behaves like majority and takes over the country. andformer majority is forced to either assimilate or to burn in fire and brimstone. and even after assimilation the 100% of the citizens to their liking, there is no guarantee that this former certain minority will cease fighting. they are split even within own rows. and it's not like these two wings don't talk to each other. they fight again. remember that the religion of this certain (for now) minority has been created for political and millitary reasons. yes of course, they all were, just majority of those other religions has moved on and realized that it is vile to kill other people for different religious believes. yes, other religions has done many bad, but we have now 2017.

I sit here in Europe, no serious, big scale war here for 70 years and think. We don't know how lucky we are! Bravo to the brilliant and brave photographer!
the photographer was so brave in taking this pictures! I want to tank him for showing images of a war that has been forgotten by many
Absolutely incredible photography of hell. Those poor tortured people. Sending compassion and love to them. Thank you for the pics.
Perhaps these guys do not want to see drugs being sold in their strteets and their sisters, mothers and wives becoming sluts and getting aids. 60% of internet is porn. Feminism is ripe. Perhaps they love to kill and torture. There are always two sides: the dark and the bright one.
This is REAL news. I'm so tired of the endless pandering to the sensationalism of Trump's administration & his fake news that Muslims are all terrorists and "journalists are the enemy" - while actual real journalists risk their lives to gather pictures like these only to have them ignored. This is criminal. These people deserve as much respect & compassion as anyone living in some nice tree-lined suburb in America. Thank you to the photographer and all concerned in this ongoing battle to defeat extremist thugs. If people put more energy & money into uniting and assisting these fighters on the ground instead of grandstanding from their safe havens we might actually get rid of these idiots once and for all
Terrible. Notice the amount of spent ammunition casings in the first two photographs.
Seriously compelling photographs and video! Beautifully done, under tremendously challenging circumstances, I give a big kudos to Kainoa Little for such amazing courage and commitment. I hope that a kickstarter page, or fundraising page of some kind, can be started in this photographer's name, for their photography career, after seeing such incredible efforts. Who wouldn't be moved by this? Godspeed!!
I have no words for that women holding what looks to be a dead child. These photos remind me of the journalists in South Africa in the dying days of Apartheid. The Bang Bang Club. Not many of them survived. Your work is important. Take care.
The armaments manufacturers are having a wonderful time. The people amid these gun battles are in a no win situation. It is absolutely pitiful.
Horrible. People trying to survive there and they shouldnt have to go through that @---)---

The subjects and images are great, it just seems like your camera isn't that great. Not a photographer, but seems the lighting in the photos is not so good. Hard to make out some faces and other details.
This may upset some but .....your photos are great and the information is important , it's your narrative of each pic that falls short.
I'm not being disrespectful but what does that mean?

I expect they didn't sell because the syrian government is on the wrong side of US narratives.
