As much as we’d all like to believe that we can channel our inner Bob the Builder and accomplish any home improvement project we can dream of, there are some jobs that should strictly be left to the professionals.Whether you’re installing a bathroom sink or building a wheelchair-accessible ramp, it’s important to make sure you really know what you’re doing before getting started. Otherwise, you just might end up being featured on Arquitectura Fail. This Instagram account is dedicated to featuring photos of shocking and hilarious architectural mishaps. So enjoy scrolling through these facepalm-worthy pics, and be sure to upvote the jobs you can’t believe someone got paid to complete!

probably not up to normal code. Trump code, sure. Normal code?... not so much.
Imagine if you had to get up during the night to go to the toilet when you’re half asleep…
Imagine walking upstairs, tired and trying to go to bed and a door comes and slams you in the face
Do you think you could build a house? If you’re being completely honest with yourself, the answer is probably no. (Unless you work in construction or you’re actually an architect.) But some people seem to overestimate their skills when it comes to projects around the house. Painting an office or tiling a bathroom is one thing, but building a staircase or a patio probably shouldn’t be attempted by someone with absolutely no experience…
At least the people who embark on these projects without any preparation can entertain us, though! The Arquitectura Fail Instagram account has been around since 2018 and has shared over 100 images of painfully bad construction projects. The creators also have a Facebook page under the same name that has amassed an impressive 41K followers who seem to get a kick out of the questionable images shared.
I have a feeling this wasn't designed that way but instead starting leaning/falling over many years.
I'll take your word cause as everyone knows George Constanza is an architect / marine biologist 😁
Load More Replies...This isn't real. The laundry is hanging perpendicular to the building, not the ground.
You are dead right. I did a reverse image search. Apparently it's a Jordanian meme.

I wanted to think they were upside down but even that doesn’t work 🤔🤣
Not even a cr@p builder... the concrete isn't mixed properly, or smoothed, or braced, or anything really. This is Joe Schmoe doing it. Maybe with a form he made himself. Edit: I mean even a cr@p builder would be better than this.

There are some things in life that don’t need to be done perfectly. When I paint my nails, it’s not the end of the world if I smudge a little color onto my fingers. And not every meal I prepare for dinner can be gourmet. But anything that involves the safety of yourself or others should be done extremely well. Trust me, there’s no reason to install your own light fixtures if you’ve never worked with electricity a day in your life.
Architecture is one field where a professional should always be hired. Eastside Design & Construction has broken down some of the benefits of hiring a professional architect on their site, and the first reason they cite is expertise and experience. When you’re designing something as important as your own home or business, you’ll want to have as much information at your disposal as possible. And a seasoned vet will know exactly how to get you the results you’re looking for.
It's not irrational. It's completely justified.

Or it was taken with an old and/or cheap phone. Source: mine takes such blurry photos :P
Load More Replies...I've never seen bricks blur before. Looks almost like a bad Photoshop job.
My cat weighs 5lbs I don't think she could walk up these "stairs" without them collapsing.
Someone wanted a rope bridge, but parents said no, so here is the compromise
Did the blueprint (if there was one) include those sticks? Looks like a brother-in-law job.
A professional architect will also be able to bring creative and innovative ideas to life. If you’ve only looked on Pinterest for inspiration, you probably haven’t even seen a fraction of the design options available. But having an expert on your team will be able to present you with choices that you might like even more than what’s mainstream, and they can help you build a home or space that truly feels one of a kind.
There's already a bunch of gas there... what's a little more? ;p

Saw something similar to this on Seconds From Disaster. It did not end well.
As long as you plaster over that conduit so no one knows you cut the rebar it's fine...
If you want to get the most out of your space, make sure you have an architect on your team. They’ll know exactly how to utilize small spaces efficiently and how to create functional layouts that will allow you to squeeze in everything you need without feeling cramped. Designing rooms can be a lot more complicated than you might expect, but an architect will be able to guide you through the process and ensure you don’t make any choices you’ll later regret.
It reminds me of those spider webs made when the spider was as high as a kite.
Bonus points for successfully making it into the garage during an ice storm. At night.
The worst is you would have to either back in, or out. Which is probably why the car is parked off to the left. Lol
... UNLESS (and hear me out) you put a TURNTABLE in the garage!

We all know that construction projects can quickly become much more expensive and time consuming than initially anticipated. But a seasoned architect can help manage your budget and keep your expectations realistic. They’ll know which expensive materials are worth splurging on and which ones to pass. Plus, they might know about less expensive high-quality options that you may not have heard of before.
This is a three-for. 1. The stonework that required the cutaway. 2. The cutaway on the shutters could possibly be avoided by reversing the hinge direction between the two panels so the panel that currently has the cutaway could sort of tuck under the stone work. 3. That coat rack that is apparently supposed to be a safety rail.
Uh, no? This is likely a historical building, so it is not unlikely that the idea of putting shutters on the window is a newfangled idea from a later century. Reversing the hinge direction works worse, because then you don't have a panel that "tucks under" the stonework but 2 left side (our left) panels, disjointed, with a missing central strip and which cannot bé fully opened. 3 that coat rack is probably a 1970 addition to make the height of the windowsill legal (in the last century the legal heigh has risen at various times for over 20 cm)
Load More Replies...I can imagine the first time somebody realized that this adaptation would be necessary.
I think the point here is that the cut is too high for the rail
gotta ask yourself, which is more important. Drain or support? Seems amazing someone felt they needed to circle this in the photo.
I like that cool violet highlighted circle! It distracts from the mayhem.
Sometimes, they design buildings to be able to take structural weakening in order to enable later modifications. But ... but, you never just assume so and proceed anyway, you check this double and triple, and make sure to document every calculation, everything really, that may be questioned later. As this doesn't look like a single beam being compromised, but likely a succession of a few, it doesn't look anything like that. Also, usually, visibility of such is avoided at almost all cost, as it wouldn't look different to a layman, so they'd for sure assume it's dangerous, regardless of it truly being so or not.
Does not look like architecture failure, but structure failure, maybe due to earthquake
Possibly architecture fail, though, if the design didn't include appropriate earthquake-proof measures.

And, of course, one of the main reasons why we should look to the professionals when it comes to building and home improvement projects is: safety. Cleary Safety has written about some of the most common safety issues that arise in domestic construction projects. To avoid these problems, they first note the importance of having proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This might include wearing a hard hat, a mask, steel-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses and more.
The old stairs were too steep, so they built a new one with the old one as support.
Lol, those old steps aren't supporting anything.
Load More Replies...Probably didn't want to pay to have the old steps removed.
I'm especially fond of the brick "footing"....time to call the engineer!
The bricks seem to have just been to support the shutter, though.
Load More Replies...kinda looks like this dude thinks he's the one going to get fired from this f-up
Electrical hazards are also extremely important to be aware of during construction projects. Cleary Safety warns anyone embarking on a home improvement project to ensure their “electrical systems are grounded correctly and all wires and cables are adequately insulated.” If you’ll be using a ladder, make sure you use it as it's intended and only trust a ladder that's standing on solid, level ground. And when it comes to using power tools, do not use any tools that you haven’t been properly trained on.
Just a smidge too low I'm afraid, Doesn't help that there's a table set up right in front as well.
The message is "We don't want handicapped people in our establishment."
For the inevitable "THAT'S THE UK" posts. It almost certainly ISN'T. Legislation does not allow sockets that close to a water source (contrary to what some people think, you can have them in a suitably large bathroom). Many former colonies (that I've listed elsewhere) also use these sockets, and it's much, much more likely to be one of those places than the UK.
You have to find the key to turn the screw, so you can lower that bridge. Then you can move on to the next area.
To increase your adrenaline and rush during fire escape.. why not..
Load More Replies...If you're in good shape, perhaps you can grab the window and work your way over to the other fire escape.
Fire safety is another important factor to consider in all spaces, but especially when working on a construction site. You should always know how to safely and quickly get to an exit, and be careful never to leave fire hazards out. In the same vein, be prepared for emergencies. Have a First Aid kit on hand and a plan in place in case something goes wrong. Always make sure that someone knows where you are, and have your cell phone charged in case you ever need to call for help.
is this the same place as the one previously? At least they did not try to circle this one.
... I seem to remember seeing this in a similar thread recently. Only that one had a hammock slung hanging under that highest overhang.
wow. HOW is this still standing? Hope they are only using the upper floor as a pigeon coup.
It's cantilevered. Must have been designed by Frank Lloyd Wrong.
I'm not sure which is worst, the lack of clearance on the stairs, or that the upper level appears to be supported by nothing but jack posts.

Use that magic red circle to actually tie in that support beam and your all set.
Glad there was an arrow. Otherwise I never would have known there was an issue.
That can be fixed with weather stripping. The bricks on the left have no mortar.
Load More Replies...Just make sure you don't have any eggs or open liquid containers in the car on the way in.
I think it translates to "God exists. He's Latino. He is at this moment busy securing/holding up this balcony floor"
Jesus, what's even worse is there is no rebar in those supports.
Ok, granted the treads (and, optionally) risers haven't been installed yet. But either way, I want to see that designer ascend those stairs and successfully negotiate that landing. As it is, this is usable only for cats.
This looks like they planned to put on a lift, but decided it wasn't worth It 😔
Once the toddlers is out, there is no way in until allowed
This a still from a video (no spoilers) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIItq0mpcf0
That may be the most inappropriate background music I’ve ever heard.
Load More Replies...Compared to the rest of this list, this one is fine. (Granted, that's a *very* low bar...)
Yea, but it can only be used on either side and not in front, like it was designed to be utilized, due to the metal contraption in front of the sink.
Load More Replies...How is this an architectural failure? An OSHA failure, on the other hand.....
You need to change the title of this post. This is exactly what you get when architects and structural engineers are NOT involved.
None of these have anything to do with architecture. They're all about bad/lacking maintenance, workmanship, materials, funds and structural knowledge.
These pictures show why regulations are necessary. America’s new king wants to do away with regulations regarding building, medicine, and food, safety, among others.
If you want to destroy the wonder of looking at posts like this, run the pictures through Google image search. Almost all of these ones are questionable, and a large number of them are fake and have been photoshopped for memes.
