Apple’s Anti-repair Policy Goes Public And People Are Furious

As if not being able to charge your phone and plugin your earphones at the same time anymore was not enough, Apple has angered its customers once again. But this time in a different manner. Apple CEO Tim Cook openly stated in a letter to investors that Apple must maintain their iPhone sales at any price. In fact, at an expensive price for those who own an older iPhone and are not willing to buy a new one after the first malfunction appears.

Apple is once again surrounded by a cloud of criticism

Here’s the tweet that started it all

So I will admit I have an iPhone and iPad, however reading things like this has made me decide that once my contract is up I won't get apple again. All costs related to Apple have gone up and tbh they should allow third party repairs.

Honestly, I highly doubt you'll regret that choice. Working in IT, Apple is easily the tech that's the most stressful and hardest to work with. Any decision they make regarding your device, you're stuck with and they rarely make working with their tech easier.

I think I watched a youtube video about this some time ago. The funny thing is I remember having a Sony Ericsson years ago (before touch screens) that only had one port, but you could still use the headphones while charging. As for Apple- a lot of people view their products as some kind of a fashion accessory or a status indicator. Even though there are cheaper and better alternatives. I simply don't understand brand loyalty, but I've always admired the marketing and business savvy of Apple. Not as some kind of cutting edge new technology company, but in the cut- throat business, profit before anything kind of way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfrYOWlKJ_g https://images.mobil...ies/10620/1.jpg

I don't understand cult-like brand loyalty, but I do understand people who buy the same brand of laptop or smartphone or a similar device after 5 or so years of using their old one which isn't worth repairing because they got used to a certain brand and their system etc. and aren't willing to switch to a completely new one and relearn everything. I never had an Iphone. I too had for years Sony Ericsson mobiles (the logo made me nostalgic) and then I switched to a Samsung and a first time with a touch screen for me (a birthday present - I didn't start using it for months until my old Sony Ericsson broke) and it took some time and effort getting used to. Similar with laptops - I'm only on my second one and I got the same brand that I previously had (hp). Seams like I'm a creature of habit when it comes to things like that 🤷

The main reason is simple 75% of all of Apples revenue is off of the Iphone sales. So they rely too heavily on that one product and if sales of that start to sink then the company as a whole starts to feel it as well. It really is a bad business plan in the long run.

Ever since I knew the name Apple and iPhone, I never....like never.... had the desire to own one. I don't know why but I just don't want to. Maybe because it's expensive yeah.... but there are many other brands that perform well and they're not that expensive. I only need a device where I can send text messages, call, use wifi or watch videos.... that's it...and cellphones, not just iPhones, can perform such.

I never had an Apple product or ever really wanted to own one, I think that was simply my instinct that didn't like the overpriced brand surrounding Steve Jobs like he was some kind Messias and the more I learned about it, the more my first instinct felt validated - but I don't hate the brand or the people who quietly use it without bothering other people about it, my hating the brand would be useless and require too much energy and too much caring about the brand in the first place. If I hate anything here it's the system that allows companies like Apple to actively work against sustainability without any kind of repercussions. I only use my mobile phone for text messages and calls, like a regular old mobile phone without internet and not a smartphone because I'm afraid if I started using internet on it I'd be on the internet every waking moment.

Apple has lost its direction yet again, they're just doing their best to milk the last ounce of goodwill & cash out of their fanboys' and fangirls' wallets, just like when they crashed & burned after ousting Steve Jobs in the 80s. They haven't produced any game-changing innovation in years, their build quality for all devices has plummeted, software quality control is poor, and warranty service is substandard. However, their prices are still exorbitant, they are still producing a truly premium lineup with top-notch service. That's why sales are dropping-off. They can't expect to coast on the legacy of their deceased founder/CEO forever, and they'll have to adjust their prices to more accurately reflect the value of their offerings or raise the value of their offerings to match the prices.

I started using an iPhone when they first came out until last year when I switched to an Android. Apple's constant changing of ports, requiring you to buy new accessories or adapters got old. Done.

Are you insane or just high? There are many arguments that can be made about Apple being "bad". Apple has changed plugs/ports the least amount of times compared to any other tech company.

I use their product for more than 25 years now, and my next laptop will be a Razer, my next phone I'm not sure yet due to the privacy issues with google. Apple use to have premium quality products but over the years the look and thickness took over the practicality and power, you can't call a computer pro when you put bad hardware inside, who due to the limited cooling is going to fail sooner than later, and all of that for a crazy price. | I had to deal with apple for the gnu issue on my 2011 MBP, they did replace 2 times the logic board for it to fail 3 years after, telling me that it's normal for this LB to fail in 3 years, but did nothing since it's too old, they just postpone the problem until the computer is too old to fix, that what I call a scam…… | Anyway I'm over with Apple computer and probably will buy refurbs phone sine they are powerful enough to las 4 years

I have an old iPod Touch because my dad gave it to me as a gift. Works well, but one of the buttons broke and the guy at the store just told me to get a new one. No, I don't want a new one. My Android phone does a ton more things than the iPod Touch and is much cheaper, too. I also have an iPad because it was gifted to me for enrolling in a course. It's been several years and I use it every single day, mainly to just watch Youtube videos now, since its functionality keeps dropping. Never owned an iPhone and just don't wanna. The price alone is a great setback and this whole no-repair attitude is disgusting. I'll stick to Android, thank you very much!

Apple has been the same throughout their history. They make great products but seldom give their customers a break. But, most electronics these days are not cost efficient to repair.

It totally depends on what part broke. I broke the charger on my 200$ android phone, and it only cost me 30$ to fix it, so definitely worth it. My boyfriend also had to change the battery for his phone, so 20$ for the battery (changed it himself) versus 300$ for a new phone. Sure, there are some things that can't be changed, like the display on a smartphone, you're better off just buying a new one. But there are a lot of minor things that can be repaired and it's more cost efficient to do so. Just an overall thought, it's sad we became such a wasteful society, no longer fixing things. 90% of my boyfriend's tools are tools that others threw away because they were broken that he managed to fix.

This is c**p. What if people (a.k.a Apple's customers) wanted to have a older phone because A, It didn't cost so much to buy, B, because it's easier to use compared to newer models of iPhones. What if people had feelings *gasp* and were offended by this also feeling like they did something wrong not buying apples newer products? This is fricking c**p.

Why don’t Apple instead have the their customers who after a certain amount of software updates, maybe 3 years worth,, we can pay (if we want) for a new premium update that’s specifically for our model phone. That way we would know our slightly older phone won’t be purposely slowed down by Apple in their sneaky software updates. We will then know Apple have put some effort into the software for each phone model including the older ones, saving the planet by reducing the huge amount of hardware used, while still making a profit on software for Apple. Who can still sell their new phones (that aren’t that great anymore anyway) to the posers. Surely thats a better business model!

I HATE android's OS. HATE IT! BUT apple is really destroying their business by destroying OUR trust. We can't afford to buy newer phones for 4 people at those prices! And only ONE of us 4 have ears big enough for the One-Size-Fits-All airbuds! Those suckers are HUGE! They won't stay in for even TWO seconds! Yes, other earbuds & headphones can be hooked up via blue-tooth but I'm sure that they're going to eventually stop working with other companies just like with ringtones & apps! And then the new iPad Pros--they BEND & TWIST, but aren't replaceable?! We HAVE to have Applecare in order to FIX a DESIGN DEFECT?! It's BULLSH@#! Was about to buy one...now I'm seriously re-thinking it. WHY give them out hard-earned money to be dismissed & sh#$ on?! CUSTOMER CARE/SERVICE is important. And they no longer care.

Agree. We've had Apple products for years, and love them. I have a Samsung for work, and hate it. But I'll just have to get used to it, cuz Apple has priced themselves out of the market. For instance, I was going to get a new iPad, but the pen is $100! Why? I also am irritated with not being able to upgrade the OS after a certain point, but you can't change processors or upgrade the memory. We will likely keep our current iPhones as long as possible and then switch to Android.

I remember when in early 2000's Apple was a sing of quality and their products were totally worth the expensive price. My first own computer was Apple Powerbook G4 (from 2003) and I used it over 8 years without any technical problems. I only bought a larger HDD for it. When the iPhones were introduced Apple soon became a huge joke and many people stopped bying Apple products because those were 'meant for people who have more money than intelligence'.

I've always said that their logo depicts that they are rotten to the core. My cheap chinese phone is 8 years old and still functions without a problem. Apple expensive chinese phones function 1 year and than you'll need to replace it with "the next generation" phone. Not because the phone is malfunctioning, but because Apple pushes software out to make your phone malfunctioning. Thus forcing you to buy a new phone.

As the battery ages it throttles the processor making the phone act slower, thus making you feel the need to upgrade

I had an ipad back in 2000. I liked it a lot, kept it for a couple years. Had quite a few apps I liked on it as well. Then comes the time we all love: updating the apps. Only, for some reason, my apps won't update. Turns out my ipad needed an update. Simple, right? Just go into settings and click update software. Yeah, not so simple. I learned that in this case, updating my ipad required me to buy a newer version of the ipad. Yeah. Switched back to android after that. The only app I had on the ipad that I can't get on android is an ebook writing app. Other than that android beats Apple in every way. Don't need to install special software to connect my android phone or tablet to my computer, there's actual SD card slots in them and, even better, they have a headphone jack AND you can connect Bluetooth headphones to them. Still not sure why Apple products are so popular.

Anyone going to post about all the grocery stores that throw away perfectly good food, which refuse to donate it to poor people or shelters, just because it’s a tax writeoff? (The excuse of liability is just that, an excuse) This is corporatism, people. Samsung, Sony, Microsoft, etc are all part of the same problem because there’s little to no regulation.

Tried different tablets, mainly Android and was always disappointed. Too expensive, slow and/or not convenient enough. Last year, I bought the new iPad that supports the Apple pencil. Very satisfied. Btw, the only other Apple product I ever bought (iPod touch 3) still works perfectly, even after 8 years of intensive use. Never had to repair it, as a matter of fact... But yeah, their repair policy is s**t. But it's not necessarily worst than the planned obsolescence of other brands, which then sell repair parts at a very high price. Sony or Samsung for example... I remember my Samsung TV that just stopped working after a year, only to learn that repairing it would cost 100 euros... A part that has been known for years to be of very cheap (i.e. bad) quality.

I'm lucky that in my city in China there's a place I go with loads of stalls to replace these screens for cheap. You can get an original apple replacement or a cheaper reproduction but they all work perfectly and they get the repair done in an hour. I have a lot of Apple products. I have a MacBook Pro for animation and graphic design. Mainly I got sick and tired of virus's and Apple rarely gets them. I have an iPad Pro for presentations and the drawing tablet aspect is amazing on it from my own experiences with Wacom. My phone I normally just trade up every 4 years. I may switch in the future and that will be down to my own personal needs not through some shallow perspective many people have of all Apple customers. Iunderstand

This doesn’t bother me. And I’m unsure why it would bother anyone. iPhones have some serious longevity.. I have friends still using the 5. Wanting to ensure they continue to make sales is what any business should do. And other businesses DO do. Plenty of businesses state that your warranty is voided if you take it to someone else, or how about textbook companies going digital so it’s a one-time access code, and we can’t resell books leaving them with no profits? The only reason why people are upset that Apple is doing it is because it’s Apple. There are two problem-children: 1. People that only use Apple products as some kinda status or class label. 2. People that hate Apple as some kinda status or class label. Fortunately most are people that are reasoned and know what they dislike or like doesn’t identify them.

Makes me sad. I view Apple as a company that basically guarantees my devices' safety ... walled garden etc. Makes it safe for my kids to use. And I feel like my data is secure ... even if they discontinue a product (Aperture, iPhoto) another app will take its place and my stuff will continue to be compatible. I'll never move to Android because of these features ... I'm not an admin, don't want to spend hours on tutorials to somehow get a device that stores my data in multiple clouds (samsung? Why?), kids' phone can still be infiltrated by filth ... I'm not a fanboy, I find what they do to be solid and user-oriented. So reading this makes me sad ...

I feel like I've come to the end of my Apple experiences. I got an iPhone for the first time when the 6 came out, and I still have it, but I've watched Apple take away feature after feature from their products and then try to sell you the same feature as an add-on for extra money. Apple's original premise was to make something better for less. Now I think they're the opposite. Impossible, proprietary, consumer-unfriendly products for more money than is sane or rational. They'll go out of business in the next couple of years. Wait and see.

Glad I never got an ipad or iphone. They both suck imho. You Apple fanatics can fight me on this if you want. Also, all business will use what are considered to be "scumbag tactics" to critics. You can't satisfy everyone and you certainly can't be a "goody two-shoes" either in business and in life. Though, why I don't buy ipads or iphones are just personal preference and reasons. As for those "Apple pushers" (ones who keeps trying to force-feed you into buying Apple products), they can kiss my a*s for all I care because I am very satisfied with current devices as they are satisfied with their Apple products. I won't and probably will never be "converted" to an Apple products. (Also, the repair costs are lower with my types of devices anyways. I don't have 1k+(USD) to buy s**t products that has hundreds of $$$ associated with it.)

Dr Denis Mukwege, from DR of Congo is 2018 Nobel Peace price laureate, and in his powerful speech to the UN about inequality and development in Africa, he reminded how his county is plagued by merciless Coltrane mining, essential to cell phones production. Knowing what we now about environment, pollution, forced labor and using the simple price/quality equation, would generally indicate to discontinue Apple and go with something that can be repaired. It also makes more sense, why give my precious earned $ to a company that has nothing but contempt for its customers.

It's because society needs to have the newest and best tech gizmo, mostly to impress people who don't give a s**t in the first place. I have a Mac Air and I made improvements on my own. I have an iPhone 6s+ because I gave my mom my old one. Anyone think it's less about the company and more about the customers impressing strangers? I applaud Tim's honesty because at least he told us what Apple does while no other company has been honest enough to do the same. Um, Microsoft and Adobe do the same and I know because I worked for them, but you're all up in arms because someone was actually honest. Boo-f****n'-hoo!

I'm IT in training and I have to say Apple is the worst when it comes to A) repairing and B) ease of use. If you have used apple for a long time you won't using it isn't the hard part, fixing it is the hard part. My dad gave me a macbook that he got from his mom for me to fix and it took me an hour just to get the thing open. Keep in mind it usually takes me about 10mins.

I took a MacBook into an Apple store years ago, the fan was working over time, there was clearly something wrong. Guy at the Genius Bar said “it’s meant to sound like that” wouldn’t listen to me when I called him out on it beyond showing me how to access how hard it was working. WTF. All my apple products have been hand me downs, but I haven’t liked them since then (still graciously accept hand me downs though). But this is just disgusting behavior.

Man I get it, but on the other hand - Apple's products are great and long-lasting. When was the last time you bought a computer from another brand than Apple that lasts you 5 years without any issues? My iPhone is 4 years old, my iPad is 6 years old. My TimeCapsule is from 2009 and Im still using it daily! Its great value for money. If I were to use another brand of computer, I can guarantee you they would be in a landfill right now. If you want your (even non-Apple) products to be recycled, return them to any Apple Store for free - they will take care of them. Anti-repair sucks, but you're not telling the whole story!

This is not a true story I looked it up on Snopes and Apple is still fixing and repairing or replacing any broken phones or iPads through the year 2022

Forgot the part about how they micro-print their logo on internal components so that refurbishes get charged for "counterfeiting".

Apple products are for douchebags with poor self steem that need to process something expensive to try to believe they are better than others.

Ehm... ok? Relax and chill a little... everyone has different motivations when it comes to buy one thing or another. I don't see the necessity to insult anyone. By the way I'm and Android / iOS user.

Well f**k Apple, no wonder their sales are plummeting. I have used only android operating systems and shall continue to. Besides that, there are several companies that offer smart devices now. Huawei especially is becoming a titan in affordable smart phones modeled after Samsung, though they have been in the news constantly for shady business dealings.

Apple has always been insensitive. When the Macintosh and PCs were in early competition, Apple staked its claim to high prices, which allowed PCs to gain in the market place.

Life's too short to have an ugly phone, I'll stick with my iPhone.

Does anyone have those cordless Bluetooth earphones? How easy do you lose them because they seem pretty easy to lose.

My brother and sister have always had iphones and I have lost count how many times they broke the glass on theirs. I can only count one accidents on my phones which was my Galaxy Note 2 after meeting a rock after falling a meter got a tiny crack. Swapped it two years later when half the screen stopped working.

This is why I don't buy their products. I find it bizarre how much people are willing to be lemmings and keep giving them their money. I have a hard time believing people didn't know this already.

There will always be iPhone repairers. I can't stand Android OS, I like the security of Apple.

my $40 Moto E4 refurb and $200 refurb Dell laptop work just fine tyvm. I never saw the appeal of an overpriced cell phone.

But this is just disgusting behavior.

yeah, this exact attitude from Apple is why I've avoided them like the plague for decades now. Well, that and the ridiculously overinflated price tags.

I never could get into anything apple, or "smart" phone tbh, I'm still over here rocking my moto flip phone, spent 11 dollars in 15 years replacing the battery 2 times, bought a 2nd charger, have a car charger, still get looks when I'm talking on it lol.. its all I've ever needed. Oh and my tablet is an android which I find perfect for me.
