In Fight Club, Brad Pitt’s character, Tyler Durden, delivered a powerful line: “The things you own end up owning you.” The main message is that many define themselves through material things, whether branded clothes, shiny gadgets, unneeded furniture, or expensive jewelry.

Consumerism has been a hot-button issue for decades, and many people are going against it. One group is the Anticonsumption subreddit, which has nearly 800,000 members as of this posting.

We’ve collected a handful of posts that express disapproval against all forms of materialism. See which ones you’re able to relate to the most.

Move to an European country. I have many problems with my country but public transit and walkable cities AREN'T one of them.

I had to move from a big house to an apartment near the subway to not have to have a car. My new place is small compared to the old house, but I have 3 supermarkets in a 1km radio, a pet shop and a veterinary clinic. I can do everything just walking. My life improved maybe 80%.

All those things would be great, but I still want self-driving cars. Private cars are never going to disappear and self-driving cars have got to be better than cars driven by drunks, idiots, tired/angry/careless/impatient/arrogant people. Also worth noting that the issue of cities being built around cars seems to be more of a problem in the US than other places (I'm basing this on what I've read, not actual experience), where cities are still walkable and/or have usable public transport systems.

OP must not be an American. In the EU the '15 min. Cities' is an 'urban planning concept in which most daily necessities and services, such as work, shopping, education, healthcare, and leisure can be easily reached by a 15-minute walk, bike ride, or public transit ride from any point in the city." (from Wikipedia). In the US, this would require demolishing and rebuilding entire cities.

I live in Saskatchewan (Canada). We don't have inter-city buses or trains (well, technically, there are two per week, but they only hit about 3 locations in the province). If you want to get anywhere, you drive.

To build a 438 mile HSR line from boston to D.C was projected to take 25 years, and cost $151 billion in 2012....a cost that has ballooned to over 500 billion before any ground was broke. During the early years of obama administration, A plan to implement 8600 miles of HSR was hatched....with a projected cost of (15 years ago mind you) over $1,000,000,000,000, and it would only account for 0.5% of commuter miles traveled, with a planned travel speed of 70-100mph. Imprinting HSR where it would actually be useful, means putting it in populated area's.....which means displacing people from their homes, and places of business....and that would always mean going through the lowest value area's, which are populated by....? People want it until they learn what would take.

In a similar piece, Bored Panda spoke with UK-based clinical psychologist and The Thomas Connection founder Michaela Thomas. She discussed a potential link between overspending and mental disorders.

“If overspending is due to lack of financial planning, or wanting the dopamine kick of how good it feels to purchase something, that can be linked to ADHD, depression, mania, psychosis, or other dopamine-related issues.”

Then there is the question of, “What drives a person to purchase a product or service?” Survey Sparrow gave several factors, perception being one of them. It is the manner in which a consumer interprets information about what they intend to buy.

“Children in lower-income families were significantly more materialistic than children growing up in higher-income families,” she said in an article for the University website.

This isn’t a super secret discount code and this isn’t to free space in any warehouse: this is strategically and psychologically designed to hook you into a lifetime of buying cheap c**p from billionaire polluters who would use your dead body as a stepping stone in a textile poisoned stream to make their next dollar to add to their dragons pile. Don’t buy cheap, plastic, pointless c**p.

Another false "equivalent". None of these other things is a valid substitute for milk.

Nice way to drop in a little political propaganda at the end , BP. It never fails to amaze me that people who live in a democracy are advocating and protesting in favor of a culture and country that as soon as it’s granted legitimacy, will jail women for not being fully covered in public, that denies women passports, bank accounts, reproductive rights, autonomy, and freedom from arranged marriages at pre pubescent ages, and will stone to unalived anyone who draws a cartoon of their god. You are fighting for the creation of a country that will subjugate women to silence and domestic slavery. But, you do you BP.
