Anti-Vaxxer Mocks Measles With Her Halloween Costume, Gets Shut Down By A Comment From A Medical Professional

A proud anti-vaxxer “fired a shot” at a woman who mocked her entire movement, but people think she’s the one who needs to get the shots.

Everything started when Autumn Dayss posted a picture of her last-minute Halloween costume idea. It featured a tiny skeleton in a baby carrier, with a caption that read “Going to a costume party tonight as Karen and her non-vaccinated child.” The post went viral, accumulating over 36K reactions and 124K shares. It also triggered a few anti-vaxxers, including Heather Simpson.

As a response, Simpson uploaded a photo with her entire body covered in red dots. “Was trying to think of the least scary thing I could be for Halloween,” she wrote. “So I became the measles.”

The costume triggered this anti-vaxxer and she made sure to respond:

To give you some background, measles is a highly contagious viral infection that frequently causes a severe flu-like illness accompanied by a rash. According to the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), complications occur in 3 in 10 who get measles and young children are especially vulnerable. “Ear infections and diarrhea are most common, but 1 in 20 will get pneumonia,” the organization wrote. “1 in 1,000 will have brain swelling that can cause deafness and intellectual disability, and 1 or 2 in 1,000 will die.

Before the vaccine was available in 1963, nearly every child got measles by the time they were 15 years old. “The disease sickened 3 to 4 million people and led to about 500 deaths and 48,000 hospitalizations every year.”

She received many comments critiquing her costume choice and this medical professional stood out:

Lots of other people shamed her with their comments:

Really? Her response is to compare it to Streptococcus? She really is ignorant. "Strep throat" doesn't kill all those people (maybe some but not all), Streptococcus does. It's the same bacteria, different mode of action. Also it's a bacteria not a virus like measles. There is no vaccine for bacterial infection. Just like there is no antibiotic for viral infections. She is basically comparing apples to oranges. Measles was almost wiped out from the whole world until idiots like her showed up. Now we're getting outbreaks everywhere. LOOK AT THE DATA you over-entitled jackass. Popularity of anti-vaxer BS tracks exactly with rise in disease preventable disease. I wish she would contract measles. The scars would be an appropriate lesson for her pretty little face.

Her response just shows there's no vaccine nor cure for stupid. She & her ilk will continue killing the immuno-compromised (e.g., undergoing chemo, born SCID, too-young-to-vaccinate, unlucky, ... ) just for kicks. Or political points? I just don't know anymore.

What saddens me about the whole antivaxx movement is that these are the people who have health insurance and can afford to get their kids vaccinated but choose not to. Then you have poor single mothers who can't afford even a check up at the doctor and would gladly vaccinate their children. I think that once it is made known that someone is antivaxx they should lose their health insurance.

Ohh, good call. I'm sure the insurance companies would love to be able to drop these people as a liability. I wonder if being anti-vax will also someday invalidate your life insurance if they can show it relates to your death. Insurance companies love to be able to not pay out.

"Vaccines contain mercury, which is a very reactive metal". Yes, which is precisely why the compound in which mercury is found in vaccines is so *stable* and does no harm. The mercury already stuck strongly to other atoms in the compound and does *not* react with the body. It's for the same reason chlorine, a poison gas, and sodium, a metal that burns in air, create inert table salt.

I am a child of an anti-vaxxer and I hate myself. My mom would say that "Big Pharma is making a lot of money off of vaccines and that's why they give so many.", and "vaccinations are harmful because of the chemicals in them." She also said that since I show signs of autism I might have been "pushed over the edge and be way worse than I am now" (her words, not mine), which I think is messed up because I know people with autism and I they are awesome people. One of the things that had stopped me from researching in the past was that she said "People are supposed to be mad at us because we're different" but I now know that logic makes no sense. I don't think my mom is stupid I just think she is really ignorant, and when people get mad it just pushes anti-vaxxers deeper into their beliefs. It's almost like a cult where people are told others are "supposed" to think their wrong. Even though I know she's wrong, I'm still scared of needles because of her propoganda...

in some states you are allowed to get vaccinated before 18 without parental consent. you really should talk to your doctor privately and find out what your rights are at your age. you sound quite intelligent and mature and able to consider your own health options. you are not your mom's choices and there is absolutely nothing wrong with you.

To mirror vaxxers you need to have balls. It is similar to mirror antifascists. It needs wisdom to deal with collective insanities. We need to be strong in future. Madness is growing exponentially while some of us wake up more and more. To bridge the gap we need to be wise. Lets see where that leads to. Big brother tries to catch all of us

Let's call in Jesus now, so we can show how Christian we are. The fact it is that strep can be cured (for now) with antibiotics. Measles & chicken pox can't. A lot of people just don't realize how dangerous strep is. I nearly had a heart attack when I got a letter from my daughter's pediatrician on a Friday after work telling me that her test was positive. I had to call the emergency number & they said it was a formality to make sure I knew that she had strep & continued on her meds, which of course I already was. But they were making sure I knew since it could take a bad turn. Our grandmothers were so grateful for these vaccines. Seems like she'd be more thankful to Jesus for them.

Listen, you already-vaccinated idiot. If my kid had strep throat, they wouldn’t be going to a party anyway. They’d have already been to the doctor, prescribed the necessary medications, and be home in bed recovering from it—-nowhere near any other kids. These people can’t even defend their foolish—-and potentially deadly—-misconceptions convincingly.

This is just as logicly as refusing a lifebelt to a child when he or she is drowning, because being in the water also means youre at risk for sharks and the life belt doesn't protect for that. But it would make much more sense when we do offer the life belt and do al other things you can do to prevent for the sharks.

The measles versus strep A argument is bogus for many reason, the most logical being that measles does not replace strep A so encouraging measles is not really curative. Moreover, measles wipes out part of your immune system's history and makes you more vulnerable to other infections.

I agree with everyone that this anti-vaxxer is a nut job, ignorant, etc. and chose a really stupid costume. Is anyone else bothered by the costume that triggered her in the first place though? I am pro -vaccine and all and think anti-vaxx people are stupid but a costume featuring the skeleton of an unvaccinated child? Really!?! So tasteless particularly since any such unvaccinated children that have died from preventable diseases did not have the choice to vaccinate themselves. Make fun of their idiot parents all you want but those children are innocent.

I agree, BUT it starts important conversations like this. If even one kid was saved from her costume because an anti-vaxxer decided to get their kid vaccinated then it was worth it. Unfortunately the likely hood of ignorant people believing in science is slim.

I noticed it too. I think its because very religious Christians can maybe lean towards anti-vax movements sometimes because they believe God has their back or something, and maybe distrust scientists etc. The other reason I think antivaxxers are a thing in general, is because the world is becoming scarier and they are clinging to this false belief to let them feel a modicum of control. I dunno, just my two cents about it.

Help me understand........ why is it ok for a woman to wear a costume symbolizing a mon carrying a dead child but you guys want to 'eat alive' a woman posing as a measles patient????????. If she wasn't anti-vaxx, would you've left her alone? Don't hunt a person because has different ideals. Please, stop supporting collective minds. I bet you'll only stop after you get somebody murdered.

This ignorance cannot be permitted. Anti-vaxxers should be shut down as threats to public safety. I'm so freaking done with the pain they cause, the lives they risk, b/c they believed Dr. Google over actual trained medical personnel and a century or so of solid research.

Sadly, there is no vaccine for stupid. People like this are a lost cause and shouldn't be allowed to breed.

Recent study shows that measles causes long-term damage to immune system and therefore exposes victims to other secondary infections, even ones the person has already been vaccinated for.

I seriously fear that until a celebrity's child dies a horrible death due to lack of vaccination, this idiocy will spread.

My father was born deaf because his mum had measles when pregnant, and my hearing-born mother became 100% deaf as a 6 year old because of chicken pox - so yeah - such a joke!

Look at that vacant stare on the anti-vaxxer. You can tell she's a dullard just by looking at her.

Hmm well people do die of measles complucations. Anyway that's a really creepy inappropriate thing to do.

They also die endlessly of product defects specifically from the pharma corps. But continue with your conventional wisdom (or lack thereof).

Because it's a corporate public relations piece fed through bored panda from big pharma corps. A total fictional strawman lady to "fight against" and reinforce their sales to low IQ ear to mouth repeating idiots like you. lol

such ignorance as to bring in a irrelevant topic to make her seem better, even though she's still pointing out the fact of people dying. She doesn't try to truly apologize but instead argue on why she is right. people like this just disgust me to my core. such narcissistic, insensitive, scum >:/

Syphilis was also very dangerous back then. It seems they don't want to understand that almost all of the diseases were as good as erad

People are so stupid. Who wouldn't want to prevent their child from getting sick??? And also the least scary costume she could come up with was measles? I think if she covered up that face it might be less scary. What an idiot.

Why does she keep calling it THE measles, every single time? It's just measles. What a dumbass.

Jesus said "Love your neighbor." Truly intelligent people are open to new ideas and information. And your costume says.........

Stupid bint. And strep DOES move through American schools like wildfire at least once a year. Strep throat is agonizingly painful and requires at least a month's treatment with very heavy duty antibiotics.

Hey, thanks for letting everyone know who not to hang out with. All it took was some lipstick to warn us not to believe anything you say. Of course if your social circle thinks this is funny -- all of you scare me.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Jesus wouldn't really dig Facebook. I also think he'd probably advocate for vaccinations in order to disease and death.

Why do these people exist? Also lately I've noticed that a lot of people who are anti-vaxxers are big Jesus freaks (nothing wrong with Christianity at all). This is just something I noticed

Ah, there's the weekly BP dose of anti-vaxx. It's so refreshing to see BP post about the same goddamn thing over and over and over. Way better than heartwarming animal stories or whatever. The doctor is a f*****g a*****e. I'm quite sure this person genuinely doesn't believe in vaccinations. How does that make her a bad persona and sociopath? I'm quite sure the person doesn't wish harm on anyone. Glad you aren't my doctor because you're heartless.

I think it is time to give this very small bunch of people much less attention. 2: and call them vaccine hesitant instead of backing them into the corner,
