I love that people around were sticking up for her, I don’t love that it comes down to threats of violence to get someone to behave themselves - that’s lowest common denominator stuff.

Do You Seriously Think I’m Just Gonna Leech The Nutrition From Your Body Until You Die? How Did You Know?

Do You Seriously Think I’m Just Gonna Leech The Nutrition From Your Body Until You Die? How Did You Know?

Ampro1 Report

Ever since its creation in 2012, r/traa has become a true powerhouse with more than 297K members posting memes that have something to do with being trans, or about the trans community. The subreddit asks its subscribers not to be too political and simply have fun. Many people share posts about the struggles they run into every single day, from transphobia to transitioning and many more.

Still, their take on tackling such serious issues is to disguise it with humor. This isn’t the place to argue but rather to embrace the weirdness, absurdity, and hilariousness of random situations that trans people find themselves in.

Being one of the most popular online trans-oriented pages, the subreddit is also dedicated to building a supportive and meaningful community, not only serving memes. One of the moderators told Mashable: "When I started, it was a lot more edgy memes. Now it's more like a place where people can leave events, support others, and comfort others while seeking humor."

A rapist is not going to be stopped by a women's only bathroom sign. If he was worried about doing something illegal, he wouldn't rape someone in the first place

Sorry, but are you serious? The vast majority of sexual assaults occur in unisex spaces, a man who wants to sexually assault someone is going to look for an easy way to do so, and he knows that he will likely be stopped if he tries to enter a woman's bathroom, however he'll be allowed to enter a unisex bathroom.

Let's be real here: the big cause of sexual assaults in bathrooms, is cis-male rapists in bathrooms. Trans-women just want to use the loo in peace.

Some men in bars prey on vulnerable drunk women and assault them. I have yet to hear anyone call for banning men from bars.

That is ignoring the very frightening statistic that says that 1 in 16 (although other studies put that number 1 in 7) men rape, and 1 in 3(!) men say they would rape if they knew for certain that they would get away with it (source: https://wearawhitefeather.wordpress.com/survivors/rape-culture-statistics/) Following republican logic, it seems about time to ban men from public. Of course they won't, because their objective is not to keep women safe, it's to oppress non cisgender people.

And note, the claim isn't "Trans people are assaulting people" the claim is "Men will pretend to be transwomen in order to assault people" - I.e., the supposed problem is *MEN WHO ARE ASSAILANTS* and the "solution" (as usual) targets someone/anyone/everyone else.

Further note that assaults are happening anyway regardless of bathroom rules.....it's not like a rapist is going to be stopped by a sign.

I have never thought of trans people as anything other than just people. And if I see a person dressed like a "s**t" I don't feel a need to rape them. But all these people that connect those dots must be supressing some serious inner demons that are just fighting to come out of them. And a lot of those people are our "leaders".

Yeah, I mean... I'm a heterosexual woman and I've seen plenty of good looking shirtless guys on the streets, never occurred to me that they'd ask to be harassed. Boundaries, mate. Boundaries. I was always taught to never lay my hands on anything that doesn't belong to me without permission, and I know that men aren't stupid by default, thankfully, so one's chromosomes are no excuse. So, indeed, as you say, it's these people "connecting the dots" that are the suspicious ones. Sure, one can want to simply protect, but you can see the difference in attitudes.

Every encounter I've had with trans-women in or near bathrooms has been pleasant...the one that sticks out in my mind was being in line for the bathroom with two trans-females in front of me...when they noticed I was behind them they both let me go ahead of them. One even asked me if I wanted her to wait outside while I went as she only wanted to freshen up her make up in the mirror. I told her I had no problem with her being in there! That she had every right to be there as much as I did. I've never had anyone smile so brightly at me as she did after I said that : )

You may have had good experiences with trans-identifying people (males) in bathrooms, but a lot of others have not. I know women raped by violent men in toilets and other spaces, we expect single-sex spaces to be SINGLE-SEX! When a man enters a single-sex women-only area, it becomes mixed-sex, and we need single-sex areas to avoid sexual assaults from occurring (80% happen in mixed-sex areas). I understand how most trans-identifying men (what you may call trans women) simply want to use the bathroom in peace, but allowing some males to enter women-only spaces will allow malicious men with bad intentions from infiltrating as well - how are we meant to know the difference?

ok, wow. has anyone here done any actual research? there have been multiple cases of men who "identify as female" raping and assaulting women: to name a few, there was Karen White, a serial rapist who was placed in a women's prison and sexually assaulted several female inmates there. There was the instance of an unnamed woman being raped by a transgender person who attacked her after the woman refused to have sex with her after realizing he was a man, and another unnamed woman raped in a UK hospital by a transgender patient in the same ward as her. The woman raped in the hospital was ignored by the NHS, who denied that a rape had taken place despite CCTV footage - they'd said there were no men present in the ward. The woman said the hospital saying nothing had happened was almost as damaging as the rape itself. All of these cases, and more, have been overlooked by the general media, ignored by activists. Their voices have been shunned and scorned. This is what's happening.

I just looked up the Karen White story, which is horrible, and apparently true: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/male-rapist-transfer-womens-jail/ It looks like this is a serial rapist who should have been isolated from women while imprisoned, regardless of current orientation (they raped women before and after gender reassignment). This is a monster taking advantage of the situation. Not at all a typical case.

Women and girls have been attacked by predators who gained access to the women's bathroom by claiming to be trans, or were trans. For the record, I would love for those who genuinely just want to use the bathroom in peace to be able to use whichever they like, but please do not pretend it never happens. I will also say these attacks are statistically extremely rare. You have more of a chance of dying in a car wreck than being assaulted in the bathroom by a trans person.

Evil Little Thing
Community Member

Instead of car wrecks, please compare putative bathroom assaults by trans people to those by cis people. You will find that trans people are *significantly* more likely to BE attacked, and the whole "but the bathrooms" argument is bullshit from the beginning to end.

Ok this thread is again about trans people and how transphobic the world around them is. Question: who would accept a man -convicted for rape- in a women’s prisonblock? Like sharing a prison cell with a woman 24-7? If you think that’s a bad idea, bad luck. In some countries you have to accept it because the person -the rapist- says he identifies as a woman. (If the person really felt like that he would not have felt the need to rape a woman right?) And no, I don’t think trans people should be discriminated against because a person’s rights, whether man woman or trans, should be respected. But the example given above makes it clear that you should be very careful about the circumstances of the case.

Seriously? After the Virginia governor's election, you're keeping up with the claim no woman has ever been attacked in a women's bathroom by an XY person identifying as a woman? (A father of a girl raped in the bathroom shouted at the school board that they had lied when they denied knowing of any such case -- they had discussed her case in their e-mails -- and he ended up being used as an example of a terrorist attack on school boards by the Attorney General of the United States. This was a HUGE issue in the Virginia governor's race, in a state that had shifted very strongly Democrat in recent years.)

"We didn't realize the user base had changed so much. It was just a couple thousand people just making crass jokes." But really, it had become something more than that.

Over the past few years, the page has seen an enormous increase in subscribers. "I think a lot of it has to do with increasing acceptability," the mod said. "Of course during [Trump’s] presidential administration we've regressed a lot in terms of human rights. But in terms of social consciousness, people are more aware of what being trans is."

They added: "People want to know what options there are for people who experience gender dysphoria or who are not their assigned gender at birth. It's really hard to be able to explore those things alone."

The moderator mentioned that they’ve noticed an increase of younger users who are feeling more open in their lives to come out. At least to come out online, and that's why a lot of trans people turn to the r/traa subreddit.

Such online communities are great for people who might not be ready to talk loudly about their struggles but need to vent and let those feelings out in some way. It allows people to know that there are others like them who are going through the same issues in their everyday lives. This creates a sense of belonging and reminds them that they have a place to turn to.

"Trans people are often some of the most marginalized people in society," the moderator explained. "So they develop thick skin, which translates into humor. Because a lot of trans people's experiences are pretty dark and pretty sad, there has got to be some way to keep the hope up [and this is one]."

Since the trans community has only grown more visible in recent years, it is critical to represent their thoughts and feelings. The content r/traa posts shows that it is a safe environment with a purpose. Even if that purpose is to share the most absurd and ridiculous memes out there, trans people have a chance to feel free and express their own voices.

It's interesting how any post relating to J. K. Rowling brings out the downvotes for anyone speaking against her. It's almost like her devoted fanbase can't accept that she might not be a shining beacon like they've always believed. I have bad news for those of you who think like this: a LOT of authors have met that fate. Orson Scott Card was one for people around my age, and just like with Rowling, he had a swarm of defenders despite his awful homophobic comments and behavior. Just like with Rowling, his defenders were all too happy to downplay and spin-doctor his homophobia and make it sound like everyone else was the problem. And does anyone hear about Mr. Card nowadays? No, no they do not.
