Every day, some annoyance begs the question, “How is this still a thing?” From superfluous charges attached to normal transactions to absolutely predatory social media stars, there is a long list of norms that are way beyond their expiration date. So the new year is a good time to sit down and take stock.
Someone asked the internet “What should die in 2024?” and folks shared all the things that need to remain in the past. So get comfortable as you read through, upvote your favorite examples, and share what you hope is going to finally die out this year in the comments section below.

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, being a f*****g subscription.
Pop up ads that don't permit you to "x" out for like ten seconds. I've left many sites for that reason.
The practice of businesses laying off thousands of employees because the company is "needing to make difficult choices" and "cutting the fat" while giving CEOs millions in bonuses.
Influencers
Hate them all you want, they wouldn't exist if there wasn't demand. Don't blame them, blame our lousy society
Having to put in payment info for a "Free Trial" so it'll just auto-renew and start charging you once your free trial is over.
Then, a lot of them like to make it next to impossible to cancel that "free" trial.
Spinning the iPad around asking for a tip when all you did was take/pull up my order
What happened that fast food restaurants now demand tips... tipping at a full service restaurant I'm cool with, if the wait staff deserves it, but fast food is crazy. Honestly surprised retail stores aren't doing this too.
Family vloggers
Old politicians. Let’s start fresh. Pretty sure they’re past their expiration date anyways.
Some old, out of touch, rich mummified white guy shouldn't be deciding for us poor, hardworking, struggling Americans
Telling me your life story when I’m only there for the recipe.
Everything becoming a subscription
Everyone begging for a tip
Lastly: HOAs
Obsolescence being built into things, electronics especially.
Rent being so damn high.
Groceries being so damn expensive.
Having too much month left at the end of my money.
auto-playing videos on websites
I have a mini heart attack anytime I'm in public like on a train etc and on a website that could do this. Being deaf I'm so worried a video will start playing and I won't notice and just subject everyone around me to some random advert, I spend half my time browsing either checking my phone is properly on silent or feeling my speakers for vibration!
Prank YouTube channels that are clearly meant to embarrass or harass people just trying to go about their day
This is disgusting. They should be arrested for every video.
The teeny tiny X in the corner of ads. Every other mm takes you to the purchase page.
Or the X that has a timer on it before you can close out of the ad.
Having to constantly tell websites you're OK with cookies
They don't have a place to click molasses or chocolate chip.
The idea that anything can be labeled “hate speech” simply because it “offends” someone.
A good speech would usually offend someone because a good speech states the truth...and the truth isn't always unicorns and rainbows. Someone will definitely get offended by this truth...
Private companies investing in single family housing.
Housing should primarily be in the hands of the state, not private companies. Everyone needs to live somewhere and for a society it's better to have it's members live in a home rather than on the streets with all the other problems attached to it. Private companies can play a role in the higher segments of housing, but everyone should be able to live under a roof.
Medical bankruptcy or being unable to access lifesaving care because you aren’t rich enough or are in the wrong country/province/part of the world.
People “self-diagnosing” themselves as “autistic” or “neurodivergent.” Just because you’re quirky and have poor social skills Claiming to advocate for other “autistics” while denying the severity of symptoms of those with level 3 autism who don’t have the ability to create a TikTok to advocate for themselves..
Unskipable Ads.
This is bad but not nearly as bad as some of these (*unskippable)
Fentanyl. I had an 18 year old niece who died from taking a pill she thought was a painkiller, but it was fentanyl and she was gone in 20 minutes. Her "friends" did nothing to help her. Nobody was charged for her death even though they knew who the drug dealer was.
Talk to your kids about fentanyl! No family should have to go through this nightmare.
I'm sorry for your loss, especially that the "friends" did not even care.
ALS. F**k you ALS, you cruel disease
Cancel culture
Cancelling people/stuff is not the problem - I'm all for f**k ups having consequences. The problem is outrage culture, where people find more and more stuff to be outraged about, even (or especially) vicariously (i.e. people offended by stuff that don't even relates to them)
Making movies/shows that check boxes for a message rather than writing a good story
Ads everywhere, paying subscriptions for news services Edit: adding subscription services for things you actually own

"I can’t even look at a recipe without 50 ads and a video popping up.
And if they absolutely positively must pop up, load everything at once so that the page doesn't jump down just as I tap the screen!
Inflation and high housing costs. A nice dual death.
The housing problem worldwide needs to be tackled NOW if anything because we're pushing people to situations where they have nothing left to lose, and that is the immediate step before violence (tho this old fart wouldn't mind seeing the streets burning if that instilled a bit of fear and empathy in our governments)
Having to pay a convenience fee to pay rent
Convenience fees
The insane amount of youtube ads
COVID-19 and its variants
Nah, cause 40% didn't get the vaccine and a whopping 85% that is EIGHTY FIVE F*****G PERCENT of people don't wash their hands after using a public restroom. These two things alone have cause Covid to be a forever virus. Wash your f*****g hands people.
Federal prohibition of cannabis
Amazing how cannabis is banned cause "omg its super addictive and dangerous" when its not yet prescribed painkillers, tobacco, and alcohol all of which are highly addictive and dangerous are AOK 🤦🏼♀️
Reaction videos.
If its done right. The reactor crediting the video (and linking the og video) being genuine reactions (not faked) and not being mean (knowing the difference btwn being critical and just plain rude)
The scam of inflation.
It's not a scam, the majority of people just don't understand how the economy works.
Booking fees for live shows
It would be hard to read a book with all that commotion, plus it would be too dark.
Mosquitoes! Seriously, how have we not hunted those things into extinction yet?!
I know I know, some asshat will comment they are a vital part of the food chain and serve a purpose.
I’m talking more specifically about the species that bites humans. I have no problem with the other ones!
F**k mosquitos. But I did hear rumors of a malaria vaccine so that's a HUGE f*****g win.

BP is on this list for me in 2024. I have loved it for some years, but 2023 has been close to depressing reading the comments section. It used to reliably be a beautiful, supportive community that encouraged diverse views while not tolerating hate. There's happier places to be. Wishing you all well.
I started coming here in 2023. The first thing I noticed was how left leaning BP is and how any opposing view is brutally attacked. The second thing I noticed was how blatantly anti-American many of the posts are. The third thing I noticed was the propensity for male bashing. Yet I continue coming here mostly because it's like watching a train wreck in slow motion.
Load More Replies...People using mental health labels maliciously to dismiss someone with a different opinion. Stop and think about how you're reinforcing stigma for genuine sufferers (and it's just bullying). Hate it. Also the Karen thing. Veiled ageist misogyny that's mainly about cancelling menopausal women.
The Karen thing is about behaviour, not demographics.
Load More Replies...I hope BP changes for the better in 2024.The content here used to be diverse. Now almost all that gets posted is AITAs, TikToks rewritten as articles and endless boomer lists of everything that's wrong with this and that. It's getting really tiring... I used to love this site.
Also, tired of the USA trashing by people who don't live and WORK here.
