Artist Buys Rights To A Black Pigment So Others Can’t Use It, Gets Trolled In Return

It’s no secret that people on the internet find some of the weirdest things to joke about. There are plenty of memes that make absolutely no sense if you don’t know either the context or the history of the said memes, as well as some unfortunate topics covered in not the best light (we all remember the Harambe incident and all that followed). Well, Tumblr users found out about Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate and all the ridiculous Facebook events that people created related to it and they went along with it. While they shared their favorite images of “the Bean”, someone figured out that there’s more to the infamous sculpture than just the funny edits.

People of Tumblr started posting their favorite Facebook events related to Kapoor’s Cloud Gate without realizing that there’s a bigger picture behind it

However, there was so much more to the story than it first appeared

Turns out, there’s much deeper story hiding behind the meme-fied bean. While people on the internet had plenty of fun trolling the sculptor behind the Cloud Gate, it was the least of Kapoor’s worries. Although Anish Kapoor is an established sculptor who’s been knighted in 2013, turns out he is not liked by the art community, as well as the general public. And there’s quite a number of reasons why.

1. Black 2.0 doesn't even come close to Vantablack in terms of ability to "devour" light. 2. The lab that developed it still fully own the rights to Vantablack. 3. Kapoor bought the rights for ARTISTIC USE of Vantablack S-VIS - a spray applicated derivation of Vantablack - not for Vantablack itself (why would they sell that?). 4. BMW painted a car in Vantablack (google it ... in fact, google Vantablack and get the true story). 5. This is just a story written in order to demonise a successful artist that only seeks to further cement his hold on his own success. I don't see how that's an inherently bad thing, or do you think that everything someone spends a lot of money, time and effort in developing should be available for free use by anyone`?

That's because as much as people like to think of "artists" as such deep, emotional creatures, making aesthetically pleasing things is pretty much about skill alone, and, just like a psychopath with literally no empathy knows exactly how to act to make himself look kind and charming, it's not necessary to relate to people's feelings to know how to manipulate them... someone who writes or draws heartwarming things isn't necessarily a nice person, they just understand the human mind well.

Now it makes sense! Did you know Millennium Park has been designed to represent the Serpent's eye consciousness? Aerial view from above, The Jay Pritzker Pavilion is the pineal gland, (designed to look like a Pinecone which symbolizes the pineal gland), the BP Pedestrian bridge is designed like a snake, and the bean is the snake's seed/egg.

Well, while entertaining and somewhat humorous, this isn't entirely factual. Kapoor bought the licensing rights for exclusive use of Vantablack S-VIS - a spray applicated derivation of the original lab-grown Vantablack - for artistic use. If you wanted to - and could afford to - buy some cans of Vantablack S-VIS to paint your car, you can. You just can't use it for artistic purposes. This doesn't quite make Kapoor the moneygrabbing devil you all seem determined to paint him as. Furthermore, he is far from the only artist - or individual - to do something like this. Furthermore, the original Vantablack - the stuff they actually reference in this article - is licenced from the lab that actually made it, and they, obviously, also own the rights to the stuff. That stuff is also available for purchase, provided you pay for the stuff as well as the licensing. This is not new, nor is it anything particularly special.

Aerial view from above, Jay Pritzker Pavilion is a pineal gland (looks like a pine cone which is symbolic for the pineal gland). And the BP Pedestrial Bridge next to it is a snake design. Just one thought, that product that's made of ground glass - Imagine this; someone spills it and wipes it up. But, of course, he only thinks he's managed to get all of it because it is ground up really fine. Someone else comes along, puts his hand on the table where the ground glass was spilt and then rubs his eye... result - infinitesimal bits of ground glass in eye! Almost impossible to remove and person may go blind. That person - unlikely to think the 'joke' is funny. Not to mention all this microscopic ground glass getting out into nature and killing everything that consumes it because it's now coating food supplies - animals dying because of it (and probably people) - unlikely to think the 'joke' was worth it. The ground glass floating around in the ocean - aquatic life already has enough to deal with now they have to swallow ground up glass! All for the sake of being nasty to an already seemingly unpleasant person.

Glass is silica. There's a lot of silica in sand. Know where you find tons of sand? Beaches. Glass can be problematic in many places but the ocean would not be my first concern.

I don’t get it. Is being a successful artist a bad thing? A man has skills and has used them to achieve great things in life and create art that people appreciate. This other guy (hipster pigment maker) is angry because of his preconceived notions that an artist apparently must be impoverished and a social martyr? HE seems like the childish asshat that needs to get over himself.

Nope. Everyone is angry this Kapoor guy because he bought the rights to something that isn't his in the first place (vantablack, a colour pigment, yeah), blocking the way for other artists from using the colour for their artworks. It's an act of egoism, selfishness and elitism. Next time, please, read the article before making a statement about it.

It really does sound like this Kapoor guy is a douchecanoe, but I'm not sure that Semple is such a saint. He won, he had a good laugh at Kapoor's expense, everyone has a better deep black they can use, but he's still really holding on to that grudge.

Love Cutural Hustle paints. If you are an artist highly recommend them. Amazing pigments and Stuart and his team are legends. Wish I could attend Kiss the Bean

What? He hates that people call it the "Bean"? But it's a bean! How could he not see that coming? XD

I'm so upset! I read about Vantablack years ago and have been eagerly awaiting the time when it would be available for purchase! Oh well, what goes around comes around.

Sooooo, there is this guy who buys the rights to a special paint because he does not want to share. And everyone is like: Oh yeah? We will make our own paimt. Cheaper, Safer and almost free to almost everyone... And they do... Well... lets say I have got the cure for cancer. But I wont share, because.... reasons. Plus I am a big meanie. Your turn

Kapoor stole that design from the greatest artist ever known; the creator of all, including beans -and his are tasty and nourishing. -kapoor s poor copy, not so much.

This is not new, nor is it anything particularly special.

can anyone tell me what diamond dust, phaze, shift and black 2.0 looks like by itself and what it looks like when painted on something?

Put a miniature version of the sculpture next to the original. A Beanie Baby.

I went straight to Stuart Semple's websites to buy some of his pigments. FYI I'm not an artist!

Now it makes sense. Did you know Millennium park is designed to be an altar to the Serpent's eye? Aerial view from above, Jay Pritzker Pavilion is a pineal gland (looks like a pine cone which is symbolic for the pineal gland). And the BP Pedestrial Bridge next to it is a snake design. And the Bean is the snake's seed/egg. I think the whole "contest" was a b******t story, and they specifically designed it this way.

Vantablack can swallow lasers, so why doesn't that guy sell it as car paint to help evade speed enforcement a bit?

That sculpture looks like my old Tiffany bean. It's a sterling silver necklace that's basically a small shiny bean on a chain.

Kapor spent a huge amount of his own money and time in working with Dupont to develop Vantablack, which is the bit left out by those who enjoy spreading fake news..... maybe get all the facts, rathr than just assuming somebody is a prick because it's a good laugh.
