Award-Winning Short Animation About A Lost Soul Meeting Death

This beautiful video takes a tender look at one soul’s attempt to bargain with death before finally succumbing. The animated short, by And Maps And Plans, a small Dublin-based studio, has raked in loads of awards and was even shortlisted for the 87th annual Academy Awards. Its title, ‘Coda,’ is fitting for a video about our ultimate end. Take a look!

There is a beast with heart of cold stone that dashes like lightning, shreds flesh from bone. // Bewitched by this beast, I fell to my knees. My mouth babbled madness and mumbled soft pleas. // I stared down the ravenous, gnashing dark maw of a cute cuddly kitten with yarn in its paw

This is beautifully done...and honestly people? Nobody knows what the end is like. It's one thing to show a theory or prediction, but another to pretend like you are certain you have all the answers. I think this is deep, and I also believe that for all we know, death could be like this. It could also be an infinity of other things. It's not up for us to decide. You cannot know what it's like to die if you've never done it. I guarantee you that if you are reading this or writing around it, you are alive. Again, gorgeous project, bravo!

I had NDE in 2010 March under a swimming pool. Death is from my experience waking up to another reality.

One of the most beautiful things I've seen in a long time ... truly moving and elegant in it's sophisticated simplicity.

Beautiful video, but does anyone else just see Studio Ghibli? Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away? Or is that just me :)

nice piece of Art, this is... i believe you guys that posted, only watched, but didnt grasp the message(or it might be something personal, who knows...). the unavoidable stance of death, is what makes life possible... even when one is trapped inside mind and body, so much that , to negotiate with death itself seems viable... i would place something like this, as a title : "being undone". namaste

How sad to think that this is considered the "best" the world has to offer in regards to death and eternity. Read the words of Jesus Christ found in the New Testament of the Bible concerning death and Paradise [ heaven ] . Nothing vague or abstract or left to interpretation with Christ concerning eternity. Read the Gospel of John and you will never be the same. I'm not promoting religion, but reality. "For God so loved this world that He sent His only begotten Son that who ever believeth in Him shall never die."

Whether this shows what death is like or not, it still captivates how if we could feel after death, we would yearn for life excruciatingly.

Thinking how we all want to see more at the time of our ending life that was not fulfilled because of decisions we made wrong something we all need to think about and you made a statement very clearly and very impressive project. love it.

A great effort on a tricky subject. Like other commentors here, it suffers from contrast with my personal view of Death, i.e., awake, asleep, awake, asleep....not awake.

Amazing, very creatively thought out & very thought provoking. I also don't believe it will be like this mainly as a result of my own experiences. And I'm inclined to agree with Laura below, that there will be many who will be in for a big surprise! I remember telling my Dad that he would be in for a big surprise when he died, because he had given up believing in a God as a result of some of the horrors he had seen in the Navy during the 2nd World War (& who could blame him)... he scoffed at the time but I know that when the time came he had the big surprise I had predicted for him. God Bless Mum & Dad I am sure you're having a much nicer time there than you had while you were here with all it's tests, challenges & lessons <3 <3 <3

Poor animation, Poor story (no idea whats happening, guy dies, wierd death that has no resemblance to the common stereotypical death comes along and shows him seemingly random things) And voice acting from people that sounded like they were reading a script for the first time. 2001 Pixar made 'For the Birds'. Sure, its a much bigger company- but they did that FOURTEEN years ago. This does not deserve an award and i made flash pieces in secondary school with better structure and animation.

Huh? what the hell was that? Im not the smartest person, nor an idiot... yet the story made no sense whatsoever. 0/5 on Story. The animation was S**T. honestly, i know a 4 year old that can draw better then most of that, not to mention "deaths" size changes multiple times, and many other inconsistencies so 0/5 for animation. The voice acting sounded like they'd grabbed two random people off the street and were reading out off a script they'd just seen, although they were trying hard so i guess a 1/5 for sound. THIS is professional work? THIS is winning awards? I watched Pixar's (albeit a much larger company) 'For the Birds' in 2001- that's 14 years ago and it runs circles around this! Why are we in an era where shoddy work gets praised?
