Modern life is difficult. Maybe not as much as it was in the Middle Ages when the plague was looming on the right and an angry mob with pitchforks were chasing "witches" on the left but still pretty exhausting.
So every now and then we have to take a break from it to maintain our health and sanity. However, we can't book a trip to Australia or Japan whenever we want. Expectations must be managed and sacrifices have to be made.

"And would you believe I got this dog for my girlfriend?" "Good trade!"
Personally I consider it a yellow flag if a potential partner does not have a pet or dislikes that I do have a pet.
I love animals, but I know I'm not in a position in my life to provide the kind of care and attention a pet needs.
Load More Replies...Thank you for dumping the girl and keeping the pup! They look healthy and happy :)
Good lord, I rescue pigeons and praying mantis when I find them struggling, how could she say no to that face and an animal in that much need? Some people have no heart.
I agree! What a stone cold heart that girl must have!
Load More Replies...I love how animals of one species can recognize the vulnerable young of other species and treat them with care.
Load More Replies...I'm surprised they would be in the open like this. I have deer in my woods and they often take naps in my yard. But when they birth the little fawns, I sometimes see them pass through my yard but they don't have the babies sleep in the open. They take them into the woods.
Many of those who scroll through such pictures eventually want to join the contributors themselves. According to some estimates, approximately 7 million Americans planned to get a pet in 2024, and if just 6 percent more chose to adopt rather than purchase, the nation could have ended the killing of dogs and cats in shelters.
However, those considering such a decision need to examine it from every angle—bringing a pet into one's life is a long-term commitment that requires careful thought and preparation.
So we got in touch with PAWS — an animal welfare nonprofit based in Lynnwood, Washington, dedicated to rehabilitating orphaned and injured wildlife, sheltering and adopting homeless cats and dogs, and educating the community to inspire compassionate action — to learn more about the process.
"A big misconception about pet adoption is that it will be easy to integrate a new animal into your home. It takes work and patience for everyone to adjust and get to know each other," Rachel Bird, the Shelter Manager at the organization, told Bored Panda.
This is the best thing I've read about so far this new year. Bless the owner.
Plot twist: The chihuahua was the muscle and the pitbull wouldn't leave without protection.
I'm telling you 99% of Chihuahuas think they're 10 foot tall and bullet proof. My Dinky Dan would go for Rottweilers and Dobermans like a scud missile.

The ONLY cat that I've ever adopted that wasn't a rescue from the outside was Pepper. Someone, left a box of kittens outside the Animal Hospital that my Vet and his family owns. Dr. T gave me a call since he knew I was wanting another cat. All the other kittens were cute, fluffy and sleeping in a pile, then there's Pepper. She climbed the cage door and was howling up a storm. Pepper looked like the scrap parts of the other kittens had been patched together. Black, white and orange with HUGE eyes, ears, feet and pure attitude. It was love at first sight. Pepper stayed small, never grew into her eyes, ears or feet, was Sassy, ruled the house and ONLY liked me, Mom and her big sister Jazzy. She hated EVERYBODY else and would hiss and swat if you tried to touch her. Pepper passed away at 13 years old, due to kidney failure from issues she had since birth. But, while she was alive that girl was spoiled rotten and ruled this house.
Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your dear sweet Pepper 😭😿💔
Load More Replies...I'd probably adopt him specifically because of the feet. But I'd name him Sasquatch instead of Stomp.
Oh he does too. I never noticed that. He's just really cute.
Load More Replies...Cats are so cool. Our cat wasn't a lap cat until I was pregnant. The cat purred and sometimes the baby kicked back. 🥰 Or least it felt like that and since it was the best thing about my pregnancy I don't want to think it was coincidences. 😊
Our one cat always curled up around my foot. I ended up rolling it, later breaking it. I had all kinds of injuries from when I was 16 that were misdiagnosed. No other cats did that. I miss that little girl curling up around my foot. It’s like she knew there was something going on there. I also had a cat when I was a teen that would lay on my belly when I had menstrual cramps. I don’t know how she knew but she was better than a heating pad! Still don’t know how she could breathe 😹
Load More Replies...When i'd collapse on the floor during pain episodes, my 13yr old runt cat will come running over and continuously bop his head against mine until i get up. If two animals are fighting he runs in and breaks it up. One time I head a bird outside screaming bloody murder, I go outside and its chick had fallen out the nest, my cat was sitting next to the bird guarding it until I came and lifted it back into the tree (he doesn't know how to hunt or attack or eat living things). Cats are more empathetic and supportive than people give them credit for.
Bird said, "It usually takes a minimum of a couple weeks for an animal to really settle into their new environment, often longer."
Another common misconception, according to her, is that by getting an older cat or dog, you won't be able to form the same kind of bond as you would by getting a puppy or kitten. "That's simply not true, and you can form amazing relationships with an older animal!" the shelter manager added.
I love Stephen King. This is the only book and movie I have never read or watched. I’ve watched The Stand for God’s Sake! But I just can’t with this one. Beautiful cat though.
I've seen the original movie of Pet Semetary. It's absolutely ridiculously bad.
Load More Replies...He’s a “Mainecoone!” I had a Mainecoone that was 18 lbs. Beautiful big fur baby.
I will name him George, and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him...
The way raccoons move their paws is so adorable, always reminds me of Oliver Twist (please sir, may i have some more?)
I am privileged to have seen baby sloths in real life, and they are mind numbingly cute. And they breathe about once a minute, so you stand transfixed, holding your own breath, until you see the little whiskers ruffling again.
I've been in my local zoo (Zoo Dresden) very early this Monday, at cold and windy 3°C so like almost ZERO other visitors. They have a sloth with a 2month old baby sloth in a tropically heated house. It's magic. They were chilling there 2m above my head, there are seats underneath and I had them for myself for forty minutes! I felt so blessed and spoiled and much more relaxed after. I had the slowest breakfast-picnic ever. At around 11.30a.m. mom gets her food and dangles directly above you. ( Don't touch them, they're mean biters)
Load More Replies...When you've seen the damage a cat's claws (infection, esp) can do to a dog's face, you'd understand their concerns.🙃
No way on earth would I allow a cat -or any animal, actually- near one of those hellhounds.
My worst damage by an animal was from a cat not a dog. Although I haven’t gone against a Pit. They are sweet until they aren’t. Just listen to 911 of the little boy killed recently….not good.
Cats are our landlords and we're their peasant servants. All Hail our Cat Overlords!
However, "Adopting an animal from a shelter or rescue means that the agency you adopted from now has room to save another homeless animal," Bird said. "By adopting one animal, you are really helping two!"
Plus, "The adoption process and fee you pay continue to support that agency so they can continue doing good work." So, if you're determined to take this step, you’ll not only be giving a loving home to a pet in need but also supporting the vital efforts of the organization to save even more animals.
Tell them what? Nothing wrong with this pic, wink wink.

Meanwhile, the cat population has grown from 59.8 million in 1996 to 73.8 million in 2024.
I buy a ton of seed and i refill it multiple times a day because of the squirrels. I have a clear feeder on my sliding glass door in my office and all day i get visitors. Eat up and yes, ill keep it stocked.
I don't know why people with bird feeders hate on squirrels so dang much. I'm like all living things deserve to eat, get them their own food and feeder and stop being selfish aholes.
Definitely. That would be me and the other guy would be my bestie. She knows I love cats.

If you visit a zoo take a look for a cheetah run. It’s usually really cool and sometimes they bring the dogs out as “guests” so adorable. Labs are the best! Cincinnati has a good one. Would love to hear any others.
San Diego Safari Park, which is part of the San Diego Zoo has a cheetah with a canine friend.
Load More Replies...I love throwing bird seed out my windows, because birds and squirells turn up every day. I love the squirells, because they don't run away when I open the window. They just stare at me like 'Watchu gonna do?'
Last summer the chipmunks kept invading the bird feeder outside our patio slider and got brave. I opened the screen and he wouldn’t move so I picked him up! My husband freaked out, I laughed for about an hour and that chipmunk stopped coming around me😁
Load More Replies...I have a black squirrel that keeps falling over. I thought it was because it’s really freaking cold! I think he/she most like;y has a broken rear foot. No way to catch. Try to trap it with a live trap and take it to a rescue. It could be ill or have head trauma. Poor little angelpuff
Load More Replies...The number of pet-owning families logically follows the same trend, with dog-owning households increasing at a faster rate—from 31.3 million in 1996 to 59.8 million in 2024—than cat-owning households, which went up from 27 million to 42.1 million in the same timeframe.
That means, on average, dogs can now be found in nearly half (45.5%) of all U.S. households, while cats comprise nearly a third (32.1%).

Like the video of the geese coming out of the barn, turning around and going back in.
This is why I get sad when I see strays. All animals deserve families and to be loved whether it's thier own family or adopted families or whatever. Besides adopting rescued animals, i wish i could do more.
If you want to join these ranks, you also need to consider the money: last year, the average total amount spent on pets, excluding adoption or purchase costs, was $1,516. Dog owners spent the more, coming in just above $1,700, and owners spent slightly below $1,350.
This is why you should never invite Your Aunt Carol over as she always causes chaos
I once saw a video of a bear ripping out an entire car door (window was a bit open) with like zero effort. A cougar can jump upward 18 feet (5.5 m) from a sitting position and is 50-75 kg of mostly muscle, so that glass better be good

I have a silver lab, and there is also a Labrador that is called Red Fox. Room for two more?
I have a LOT of experience with Labs and I find the black ones to be the most mellow, followed by yellows and then those darn hyper choco labs!
And I've had the opposite experience. Every chocolate I've met and/or shown has been either super chill or lazy while every yellow I've met has been coco for cocoa puffs nuts and hyper. I've only met two blacks which isn't enough of a sample size
Load More Replies...I would like everyone to know that there are "breeders" out there that are trying to sell "silver" labs. There is no such color in labs. The only colors are black, yellow, and chocolate. The first "silver" labs came from a gentleman who owned not only labs, but Weimaraner's as well. We all know what happened there and now people are trying to sell the public on so-called silver labs and charging huge amounts of money for them, claiming them to be rare colored labs. Please don't fall for this.
Reminds me of when our poodle had her only litter of pups. My mom thought the breeder shafted us because they had straight hair. Poodles, like most curly-haired dogs, are born sleek. We ribbed Mom about that for a long time. We kept two pups and gave the third to a friend. They were family. ♥♥♥
"As you start thinking about your next pet, do a lot of research, talk to people who own different types of pets, and consider becoming a foster volunteer at a local shelter first," Rachel Bird of PAWS said.
"You can even try pet sitting to get some experience with different types of animals and see how it goes without the lifetime commitment."

they r super derps. my aunt had one and the big doofus would slide down the carpeted stairs on his tummy cuz he couldnt figure the stairs out. he went up and down fine before the carpeting. for some reason adding carpeting to the stairs gave him a major derp moment and he went sliding down the stairs on his tummy for the rest of his life. although this is the same dog that didnt kno how to stop running and use walls or ppl as a way to stop. he mightve been a little extra derp

Me too! It’s really awkward when family brings babies over. I wish they’d bring baby penguins, that would be amazing.

Who else thinks it is a bit unfair to picture a crying baby human baby while the other babies do not seem to be in any distress?
Once I was at the party and a woman dropped off her husband and wanted to show my employer her three-week-old baby. I was standing next to the employer and saw this doll-like baby. Everything inside me screamed to touch the baby, even on the foot. But I knew to respect boundaries and restrained myself. The biggest test ever.

I always prefer to take my cheese out a couple hours before eating it, to take the chill off it and soften it a bit. Same with any bread and sausage you might be eating with that cheese. (Store it cold, of course, but don’t serve it hard and cold.)
