People Are Loving This Ohio Judge Who Gives A Taste Of Their Own Medicine To Animal Abusers
Animals have rights just like us and they should be respected. And no animal deserves to be treated with cruelty. These sound like two very basic ideas, right? Unfortunately, there’s an unseemly number of people who enjoy abusing animals or don’t even realize they’re doing it. Some of them even escape the long arm of the law.
But those who don’t may have ended up in front of judge Michael Cicconetti of Painesville, Ohio. The now-retired judge used to give out creative and unusual punishments to animal abusers as a way to give them a taste of their own medicine. That way, the lesson that hurting animals is wrong is more likely to stick.
Just to be clear, the judge never gave out illegal or dangerous punishments. But he did want to teach people who are cruel to animals something about not being utter jerks.
Judge Cicconetti used to give out very creative sentences where the punishment actually fit the crime
He made one woman, who left 35 kittens in the woods, spend a night in the woods all by herself
Meanwhile, a woman who kept her dog in filth spent the day in the town dump
You can hear the judge talking to the defendant right here
But what kinds of punishments did the judge give out? In one case, a woman abandoned 35 kittens (yes, you read that right—35) in the woods. So the judge knew she needed some help understanding that what she did was wrong.
He sentenced her to spend a night in the woods. Here’s what he said to her that time: “How would you like to be dumped off at a metro park late at night, spend the night listening to the coyotes, listening to the raccoons around you in the dark night, and sit out there in the cold not knowing where you’re going to get your next meal, not knowing when you are going to be rescued?”
Meanwhile, the judge sentenced another woman whose dog was living in filth to spend a day at the local dump. “I want you to go down to the county dump, to the landfill, and I want them to find the stinkiest, smelliest, God-awful odor place they can find in that dump and I want you to sit there for eight hours tomorrow, to think about what you did to that dog while you smell the odor. If you puke, you puke.” Now those are some seriously Biblical punishments.
Here’s a video that goes into more detail about the judge
Judge Cicconetti started doling out these punishments when he realized that jail time only leads to offenders repeating their crimes. According to the judge, he always makes sure that the sentence fits the crime. Judge Cicconetti absolutely adores animals. That love for all living things started when he got his very first dog, Herman (he was a Dachshund). Now, the judge has a 10-year-old Bernese mountain doggo named Kasey.
Here are some more of the judge’s unusual sentences:
-A man who committed child abuse was sent to a school in a dog outfit and had to talk about child safety.
-During heavy blizzards, he ordered defendants to clear snow at a retirement home.
-A man caught with a loaded gun was sent to a morgue to see corpses.
-A young man who stole a bicycle spent 10 days riding a bicycle to support a local charity.
-A man who shot a dog was sentenced to donating 40 lbs of dog food on every holiday to the Lake County Animal Shelter.
-Two teenagers who scrawled 666 on a nativity figure of Jesus had to lead a donkey through the streets, with a sign saying: “Sorry for the jackass offense, but he is soooo cute!”
-Teenagers who flattened tires on school buses were ordered to throw a picnic for the primary school children whose outing was canceled due to the prank.
-A man who committed a traffic violation while shouting “pigs” at police officers was made to stand on a street corner with a 350-pound pig and a sign that said “This is not a police officer.”
-An 18-year-old male who stole pornography from an adult book store was ordered to sit outside the store wearing a blindfold and holding a sign that read “See no evil.”
-Three men soliciting sex were ordered to wear chicken suits holding signs that read “No Chicken Ranch in Painesville.”
-In January 2008, Cicconetti sentenced a man who stole a red collection kettle holding about $250 from the Salvation Army to spend 24 hours homeless.
-A woman who was convicted of stealing from a church was ordered to spell out the sentence “I stole coins from this church” entirely in coins and apologize to each worshipper as they entered the church.
-A woman who skipped out on a cab fare was ordered to walk 30 miles in 48 hours. Thirty miles was the distance the cab driver had driven her before she skipped out on the fare.
-A woman who pleaded guilty to assault for using pepper spray on a man was given the choice to serve 30 days in jail or serve three days of community service and be shot herself with pepper spray. After agreeing to the latter she was sprayed and found out it was only water.
-A nanny accused of hitting a boy with a belt was compelled to read articles on the consequences of child abuse, and then discuss them in the courtroom in front of the judge, the victim’s mother, and spectators.
Internet users thought that the judge’s sentences were spot-on
While I think some of these must definitely have made an impression, I wonder how it's legal for a judge to just invent sentences. Aren't there usually strict guidelines for what punishments are supposed to go with certain offences?
I think they way he does it is offer them the choice of the traditional sentence (jail time) OR his punishment.
Load More Replies...This is fantastic...what good is jail time when you can actually be fully immersed in a position you put others in. People are obviously a lot less likely to offend when they get a dose of the pain they've inflicted. I totally support this! I'd love to see it catch on around the country
Please send him to South Africa. Here a 17 year old F**K TARD tested his new found gym strength on a dog's leg. It broke. The leg was amputated. The dog has found a new home, but the boy vanished from thin air. So, case closed. I hope that boy's legs and arms will be broken in the same way one day and all will be amputated. Please let this boy be sterile as well. The world does not need more of him.

What an amazing judge, too bad he has since retired. Jail time doesn't always make the criminal realize the extent of their crime, some don't care; but make them do something humiliating and harsh they think a little harder on what they've done wrong. Too bad more judges don't think along the same lines as Judge Cicconetti, maybe some of the people currently in law school will learn about this judge and will take on his legacy to do right by the too many abused animals in this world.
The most abused animals by far are livestock, but that's standard industry practice, and people who eat slaughtered animals don't care.
I drives me nuts how you kick a dog and they want you shot. They'll scream at you between bites of their KFC Big Crunch sammich. Most of them eat meat every single day yet lose it when one animal is abused in any way.
Load More Replies...i get the idea of poetic justice, but what is the legal basis for this? i don't know enough about law. some of these don't seem like things you can sentence people to do. some of them also seem to carry a religious moral judgement rather than a criminal sentence. like the problem of stealing an adult magazine is stealing, but he was made to hold a "See no evil" sign? some of these are great, but it feels like giving this power to the wrong judge could be really dangerous
Agreed. If he's saying "30 days in jail OR..." then it's the person's choice. I liked the picnic for the kids who had their field trip ruined, but public humiliation I'm not so sure about. I think it just makes people more bitter and angry. Oh and the guy who abused a child (how???) and was sent to talk to children!!! No!!!!!
Load More Replies...While animal abuse should not be tolerated, it is interesting to see how many people are up in arms over the mistreatment of a dog or cat, but are completely oblivious to the crimes against animals committed in factory farming. We condone treating animals as less than something that deserves humane treatment in the United States. It is so strange to me that people will pet the dog sitting at their feet while simultaneously cutting into a steak on their plate. Animals have feelings. I think most people responding to this post gets that.
Hypocrisy in its worst. People are even unwilling to reduce consumption of meat, dairy, eggs and refuse all the scientific evidence showing the direct link between consumption of animal protein and chronic, painful inflammations in human body (such as arthritis), chronic diseases (such as diabetes), heart diseases, and various cancers.
Load More Replies...We need more people like this in the world. Recently, i learned that someone I thought I knew (family) was an animal abuser. They will never get the punishment they deserve, not only for injuring an elderly dog I practically grew up with, but for the emotional pain that they caused the rest of my family.
Did you know that in some circumstances of a person is convicted of animal abuse, they can still own a pet?!? Sometimes the animal who has been abused even goes back to the owner. Honestly, this needs to be revised!!! (If someone else knows more about this than me please elaborate)
The justice system should be renamed: the injustice system, that's more fitting name.
Load More Replies...Honestly- I think animal abusers should get YEARS behind bars or the death penalty if they killed an animal.
OMG abandoning 35 kittens in the woods. She needs to spend 30 nights in the woods alone with no food and no shelter.
I like the idea but they don't get what they really deserve to be beaten and locked in a dirty crate.
Are these sort of unusual punishments according to the law? Or do judges have no restraints in their rulings? The article mentions the punishments "are not illegal", but that can be understood to mean that they just are not explicitly even mentioned. What would happen if the judge would order a thief's hand chopped off? Can Ohioans in the know comment on this?
The judge can reschedule another hearing on a later date (which he probably did). He most probably gave them the choice to either do that, or be penalized in the classical way, which tends to be either a penalty fee plus going to jail (depending on what they did). It goes without saying that the judge has the last word when it comes to giving out sentences and by refusing lighter but morally harder sentences (like staying in the dump for a day ect.) you're making the judge dislike you even more, which, obviously, translates to a given harsher punishment.

HALLELUYAH, a person with a brain and an understanding of appropriateness.
I think this judge should run courses for other judges on alternative punishments. Its all very well to laud him (not that it isn't highly commendable), but he could be training others to do the same. Pay it forward I say.
What an intelligent judge. Just being sent to jail does not change behaviour. A taste of their own medicine is much better.
I think this is an alternative punishment, this is more of moral and psychological ones. Some of it are beneficial to the offender as well as the community.
Great ,but I think his sentences should be increased by 5 ie., one day in the should become 5 days in the tip and so on !
I must say this is refreshing, sad to think not everyone will learn, however I do love the ideas the judge has, I wonder what the punishment would be for repeat offenders, like many others, I would like to see the same punishments in my city, God Bless you judge !!!
Having lived in the Painesville area this Judge is renound. He does offer the people that come before his court the option of jail time and whatever sentence fits the crime. Most people will take the latter as in there view they are not going to jail, but they do receive more judgement from the community which will last a life time.
Obvious animal lover. I wish there were more judges that would give cruel people a kick in the butt. God knows many need it.
Excellent! Completely agree with his methods. Bet they make more of an impression than all the jail time or fines ever would.
Why can't ALL judges be this wise? I wish we could clone this gem of a man.
Years ago two teenagers did $10,000 of damage to the head stones in a cemetery. Every day that summer 6 days a week they worked 12 hour days. Sundays they worked 8 hours. From the day after the school year ended to the day before school started the following year.
What a guy.Take note judges and do whats right for the animals that are abused.Tit for Tat.
Creativity at its best! Other Judges, Police Officers etc should/could learn from this and set an new precedent for them as social influencers.

Today I read in a local paper that a disgusting piece of scum individual was caught raping his dog. I wonder what his punishment should be...?
The phrase you are thinking about is "cruel AND unusual punishment". Not "cruel OR unusual punishment" ;)

Whine a little louder. You sound like the jerk who thought that a convicted rapist's life 'shouldn't be ruined for just 20 minutes'.
