Man Or Woman? Androgynous Model Poses As Both To Challenge Gender Stereotypes

Meet Rain Dove – the androgynous model that walks the runway in both menswear and womenswear.

Not to be confused with the modern gender classifications, androgyny is an ancient term, describing a character or a person that has both masculine and feminine characteristics. And as with everything concerning unique looks, androgyny is the next big thing in the fashion industry – from male models looking quite feminine to female models looking quite masculine.

Though Rain didn’t always see herself as androgynous. Instead, she saw herself as an “ugly woman.” “I never had bad feelings about it; I just felt that maybe I was that one girl,” Dove told After Ellen. “It wasn’t until I was wilderness firefighter for a while and that’s when I felt more empowered in my ambiguity and sexuality as far as gender presentation goes.”

Quite frequently, people assume Rain is male, but she doesn’t correct them. Instead, Rain takes advantage of these “misunderstandings.” “When I was a firefighter they thought I was a male and I went with it because I really need a job and I was out in the middle of nowhere in Colorado,” she said. “So I utilized my gender-bending profile as something that had gotten me a bunch of odd jobs from nannying to the landscape.” And that’s when it all started… Now, Rain Dove is an activist, she is pursuing acting, and she is the runway model that turns heads in menswear, womenswear, and fashion photography. “We’re all struggling to be unique, and the unique thing you can be is yourself,” Rain told Buzzfeed. “The gender thing doesn’t exist; it’s a social construct you don’t have to fit into. Some people love you; some people will love you. Some people accept you, and I’m one of them.”

Actually I don't really think in genders. But I notice I keep thinking about it because people keep emphasizing on "It's normal/ok to be different! It's normal/ok to be different!" Same as when you keep telling your innocent/pure 3 year old child "It's ok to play with your neighbour's child even though he's black/Asian/African or whatever." Then he will start to think about it. Oh is it ok? or was or should be a problem or special? Even though normally he would just play. WE MAKE it a BIG deal and important. Don't fix a problem in a place there isnt. Th eonly thing you do then is create one. ALOT of people don't understand this or just want attention/money. imo if you really want to change something then speak up when the situation arises when it's needed for example when people discriminate. Start handling specific needed situations/people who offend other and stop obesessively publicly broadcasting how important this is or racism. It's like shooting with a shotgun at 3 targets.

"she looks like a man" this is what she's trying to get rid of! Who decided that this is the look of a man? This can be the look of a woman and a man.

Instead of being presented with stereotypes by age, sex, color, class or religion, children must have the opportunity to learn that within each range, some people are loathsome and some are delightful.

Gender is a real thing. You are either born with XY chromosomes or XX chromosomes. (Sometimes defects can cause a different combination) But it is not a social construct, it's a part of being human.

Actually, gender is a social construct. What you refer to when talking about the XY and XX chromosome is sex.

It's a matter of language. Sex and gender. There are two sexes; male and female. This is necessary for bureaucracy, competition and such. So sex tends to refer to biological differences, while gender more often refers to cultural and social differences and sometimes encompasses a broader range of identities than the binary of male and female.

I have to be honest. She is a better looking guy than girl. I totally like androgynity but I disagree with her saying 'gender doesn't exist'. Maybe not for her but "Hellooo" there is the majority of human kind where it is quite obvious what gender we are. Nature likes it that way so that we can get on reproducing and don't waste precious resources on someone who could be either gender. What a kerfaffle that would be.

Dear uneducated a******s, SEX is biological (what you have been calling gender in your little chromosome rants). GENDER is your perception of your own sex. You can have male chromosomes but identify as a female (crazy I know). There are still 2 biological SEXES (there is also the 1 in 500 intersex folks, but that's whole other can of worms). Before posting a 'biological' rant, do some research. Or just a google search. Really.

maybe before YOU go on a rant and tell others to google it, you should do the same; and see that sex and gender can be synonyms.

While I support transgender people, because folks should be allowed to be whoever they want to be, I always felt a bit sad they anyone felt the need to mutilate their body to match their self-image. I am pleased that the trend seems to be moving towards accepting the "spectrum" of gender identification, free from pigeon-holed demands on behavior or appearence.

Of course genders do exist. It is not a social construct but clearly a biological construct. A very necessary one... But that doens't mean everybody has to fit into one or the other! If you feel you're different or inbetween: go for it, be different, be yourself. Be free and let nobody judge you. You are unique and yes, there are people who love and respect you. Only: pretending there are no genders is beside the point.

Yes, sexes exist. Your sex is a biological construct, but Rain is using 'gender' as which side you conform to. Everyone has a sex, but not everyone has to fit into a gender.

have you ever noticed that all people who say ''you should be yourself, don't listen to others' opinion of you, stay true to who you are'' are people who were in a difficult position and were discriminated against but are successful now? They had been through difficult times yes, but they say those things now because they've found a job in spite of their unique looks. People who are still struggling with being different or unusual try to change how they look or behave because they can't fit in society and are being bullied. Those don't write ''be yourself. you're beautiful'' rants.

I love Rain Dove. Her message is so positive and simple - be who you are, despite personal and social pressure. But she is someone who actually practises what she preaches, and makes herself vulnerable so that people struggling under the weight of gender norms have a relatable voice. She does this despite collective mockery and judgment - as you can see in these very comments. Simple-minded people become uncomfortable, and even downright hostile, when presented with something they cannot clearly label and categorize. Rain, please keep flying in the face of ignorance. You are strong, and strength is beauty.

We're not all the average norm and those not being the average norm like us they still do share all the same rights we have.

I think that androgeny is to do more with psychology rather than presentation. As an androgynous person I have a female body, but I have a different rational. I am very protective and like to provide for my wife. I wear less feminine clothes because it’s how I feel comfortable. That said, I am very empathetic and like the fact that I am a woman. I would say that an androgynous person is adaptable mentally rather than conforming o any particular role assigned to gender.

If she wanted to become ftm, she wouldn't even need testosterone lol! Incidentally, I'm a post-surgical ftm and I'm really jealous. I'd exchange my classically beautiful female face for hers any day. But the statement that gender is a social construct bla bla bla is plain silly. At the end of the day, we've all got penises and vaginas. Even transgender folk who get surgery want to get the most naturalistic-looking penis or vagina. They don't get surgeries to get a third gender alien tentacles for genitals.

People doesnt relly understnd the power of creation we are being created to live as human beings with a specific gender...There is only two of us in this world thats a MAN/MALE and WOMAN/FEMALE meaning doesnt matter you are UGLY, BEAUTIFUL, HANDSOME ,WEIRD BEING or whatsoever as long long as you have a penis then you are a male and you have a vagina then you are a female...we always trying to motivate people like "Never trying to listen to peoples' saying about you" and why we accept people judging how our faces look like and trying to act like its okay to be a man if you are a woman who's ugly.. NEVER EVER change the way you are born to be dont let people influence you dont emotions influence you and its okay if you are a male to have feeling to another male but those are juat feelings not the way you are born...also if you are a woman dont date another woman just because you do feel for them its just a feeling its not the way you are born to be... trust your well being. PEACE:)

well....sorry to upset, but genders DO exist...and I think if doctors would test her genome and hormones they would find something that would be the reason of her looks. I mean she looks great as a human person in general. But it is not the reason to spread these absolute anti gender ideas...what if most people feel very good in their gender? minorities should always have equal rights and be respected, but it should never influence how whole other society see themselves...it is just not fare. I am a women and I like to be and act like one, it is a pleasure, not a burden.

It's interesting how she looks like a man when dressed as a woman and vice versa (looking like a woman when dressed as a man). But tbh clothes shouldn't and do not define us. We just gotta be what we are, if you feel like a woman you are a woman and if you feel like a man you are a man I guess. Of course if you're gender fluid or non binary SURE BE MY GUEST!! ??“The gender thing doesn’t exist”?? In this case the battle of the sexes is going on in one person. Exhibition Battle of the Sexes – Franz von Stuck to Frida Kahlo (Geschlechterkampf – Franz von Stuck bis Frida Kahlo) was held from 24 November 2016 to 19 March 2017 at the Städel-Museum in Frankfurt am Main. 140 paintings, films and sculptures reflected the change in gender roles and the perception of this roles.

Err ma gersh Y chromosome = male. If you have a Y chromosome, you are a male. If you don't, you are a female. That is your sex. That is your gender. Because sex and gender are synonymous. If you are a female, and you want to smash your boobs and wear baggy shorts... That's fine. But don't say it's because your gender is male.

hi gensuzi! it doesn't really matter whether rain is transGENDER or not. transexual is an offensive term to most people, so please try to weed it out of your vocabulary. rain identifies as a woman and whether she is a woman assigned female at birth or a woman of trans experience, it doesn't change the fact that she's a woman. so it really doesn't matter if she has a penis or not. also, penis is not a bad word. neither is vagina. they are body parts, like an arm. it doesn't matter

You are either male or female. Every once in a while someone is born with both male and female sexual organs. Other than that if one thinks they are the opposite gender than what they were born they have a mental condition which should be treated by professionals.

Frankly I'm not seeing the "manly" part she's trying to pull off. Some women have broader shoulders, but sex is sex - breasts, hips, inner and outer workings. I don't even see any evidence of hormone therapy here. Pity - she reminds me of this girl I know who's voluptuous, girly, hyper-feminine and convinced that she's somehow gender-fluid. Confused, pretty unfortunate, I love her to pieces and help her whenever I can but her head hasn't been on straight for a while.

Lets get the basics right: 1. Man = Penis 2. Woman = Vagina Now lets top it up a bit: 1. If you have a penis and look like a girl you are determined by your genitalia! 2. If you have a vagina and you look like a guy you are determined by your genitalia! Both men and women have nipples which so boobs are out of the question because men can grow them lol through weight gain So in essence if the model has a D**K then the model is a man If the model has a Vagina then the model is a woman! There are only two genders and there are really attractive people out there that is all finish and klaar (South African here)

There is a difference between sex and gender. Regardless of either there is nothing that forces us to act a certain way, "gender roles" make us feel like there's a certain way we should act depending on our sex and gender. But those rules don't exist anywhere but in our minds. Ultimately people should be free to act as they wish regardless of what's in their pants and who they are in their hearts, because we all deserve the autonomy to choose how to live our lives.

1) she's posing. you don't know how much or little she smiles in real life. 2) people need to stop telling other people how much to smile. just because someone doesn't smile all the time doesn't mean they're not happy. different folks emote at different levels.

Really.

Only: pretending there are no genders is beside the point.

have you ever noticed that all people who say ''you should be yourself, don't listen to others' opinion of you, stay true to who you are'' are people who were in a difficult position and were discriminated against but are successful now?

NEVER EVER change the way you are born to be dont let people influence you dont emotions influence you and its okay if you are a male to have feeling to another male but those are juat feelings not the way you are born...also if you are a woman dont date another woman just because you do feel for them its just a feeling its not the way you are born to be... trust your well being. well....sorry to upset, but genders DO exist...and I think if doctors would test her genome and hormones they would find something that would be the reason of her looks.
