They aren't growing the avocados for the purpose of using the pits for utensils. They just found a way to use a waste product to replace another.

We grow avocados in NZ. There are no rainforests destroyed in growing them. They've been planted on farmland, when part of the farm was sold off.

Which is why they shall stop using their pits and throw it into the ocean, totally understand.

And we can do this same biodegradable plastic with starch from widely grown foods like potatoes. This is just foolishness

Also avocados from Mexico are basically blood diamonds. The amount of truly horrific violence around them is unreal.

And the pesticides needed kill so many pollinators, which in turn kill so many other plants.

Haas avos are grown here in California coastal regions and no rainforests were harmed. I agree that they are water-hungry, like our Blue Diamond almond trees yet we still grow them. I could live without the almonds but not the avocados. Looking at a map of the world avo growing regions I see South America and central Africa are prime rainforests that are being cut. That is a shame.

I like the plastic replacements made from algae. It's what oil usually was originally to begin with, I see no reason we have to use million-year-old algae when they've figured out how to use the current stuff. It won't necessarily pull more carbon out of the atmosphere, but it will certainly prevent more from getting released.

Avocado pits are a byproduct of commercial guacamole production. We couldn't replace all or even most plastic utensils with this, but there is still a lot of feedstock that could be used without increasing the environmental impact from avocado growing.

Every plantation then would be equally as bad? (Maybe with exception of rainforest being cut down) either way people still gonna eat avocado may as well eat it with utensils made from their cores

Oh, so that's why vegans are dying. I was wondering why the vegans I know had stopped eating the only fruit that would keep them alive. Avocados are the only fruit rich in fat.

Most people don't go out with cutlery stashed on their person. At work or home, yes, use real cutlery.

polylactic acid plastic(PLA) creates waste by cultivating corn. Wasting water and polluting the ground with salts from fertilizer. PLA also does not biodegrade properly unless its exposed to air and ground up a bit. Really there is no "good" way to make things. Everything creates waste. I dont know the proper answer aside from eliminating mankind.

Some restaurants in the US use cornstarch utensils for carry-out. Guessing that's the same thing? Apparently a downside to it is that, because corn is an important food source world-wide, using too much for bioplastics and biofuels could cause a food crisis. Behind Rostit's comment, it takes away plantable acreage for food corn as well. When the US government decreed ethanol would replace up to 10% of gasoline additives it spiked the cost of food corn which is a heavier sugar corn. Many of our food costs went up from cereal to meat from animals which eat the corn. It's really hard to find an answer
