When someone is being a jerk to other people, most of us look the other way, telling ourselves things like, “it doesn’t concern us,” “nobody is getting hurt,” or “why bother, we won’t change them.” But not every situation is the same, and not every tool deserves our indifference. Some are so exceptionally annoying, it’s impossible not to retaliate. Just ask Reddit user NicotineAmy; when she was working at an amusement park, she had the pleasure of meeting one.

The lady was mocking little kids for the sole reason of how they looked on a ride. Make no mistake, she wasn’t laughing with them or anything, she was just insulting them. Something along the lines of, “Look at their squashed faces, haha, they’re so stupid.” NicotineAmy couldn’t just sit quietly as she heard these immature and mean comments, so she scolded the woman, demanding respect for other guests. But the woman didn’t listen. She was indulging in her ignorance.

So when she hopped on one of the seats herself, NicotineAmy gave her one hell of a ride.

This one amusement park guest was being very rude to other customers

So one of the employees gave her a ride she will never forget

We managed to get in touch with NicotineAmy, and she was kind enough to tell us more about her time at the amusement park and the whole Karen situation. “I’ve worked the summer job for around 5 years and I loved my time working at the park,” NicotineAmy told Bored Panda. “But with getting older, I will not be returning.”

The ride operator said most of her guests were amazing. “We got a lot of amazing and patient families. [But] we did get our fair share of entitled/toxic people [and] I’ve got a lot [more similar] stories. One of my favorites was when I ran the ticket booth: I had a woman try to jump me after my shift since she wanted a refund I had no control over.”

Unloading on a Karen online can serve as a much-needed catharsis. There’s only so much people who have to smile while customers cuss at them can take. Publicly shaming individuals for their entitled tantrums feels good, like a much-needed reward after taking in all of that negativity. But shaming Karens only treats the symptom and not the disease.

Even though Karens come in all ages and names, a business comparison company out of the United Kingdom called Bionic decided to do a humorous new study and look into their prevalence around the globe.

“All small business owners need to deal with negative feedback at some stage,” Dani Weller, customer service team leader at Bionic, told Forbes. “We ran our report to find out if location had a bearing on the number of complaints, and during our research, we found the Karen phenomenon was a real thing, with Karen ranking in the top ten names for people who complain the most.”

First of all, Bionic looked at the most Karen-like incidents by analyzing over one million reviews on Trustpilot, a leading source of customer feedback used by brands to improve their product offerings, customer experience, and service. Bionic then matched up the names of the top complainers to find out who the most common complainers really are and where they’re most active. They also determined the real names of the women—and men—most likely to become a future Karen.

Interestingly, the biggest Karens aren’t actually named Karen. According to the data, the top name for women most likely to complain around the globe is Louise, followed by Ann and Jane. Karen only came in at number eight on the list. “Louise is three times more Karen than Karen—responsible for 4.8% of complaints in the 1,799 reviews we analyzed on Trustpilot,” the team at Bionic explained.

“Although we typically refer to people who demand to speak to managers (and generally make life difficult for those around them) as a Karen, we were actually surprised that the name Karen did in fact rank in the top ten names for people who complain the most,” Weller added. “It infers that the meme wasn’t just based on a random name.”

When talking about men, John, David, and James are most likely to complain.

The company also looked at the women’s names that exhibit Karen-like behavior the least—Lisa and Emma were responsible for only 0.1% of complaints each.

Besides analyzing the names, Bionic looked at the countries with the most women named Louise (the top complainer), as well as the places with the most women who are actually named Karen. In both cases, the U.S. was the top location in the world for Karens and Karen-like behavior.

People were really glad that justice was served

“The report indicates that while California is the state with the highest density of Karens, the Karen phenomenon is… broad and universal,” Weller explained. “The issue of unruly and unreasonable customers is one that affects customer-facing workers, as well as other customers, the world over.”

If you, just like NicotineAmy, encounter a Karen, here are a few tips to get you through it:

  • Keep calm and listen to their issues. “Even if you don’t think their point of view is correct, you need to show a willingness to at least hear their side of the story,” Weller said.
  • Be solution-focused. “Acknowledging the [Karen’s] feelings and offering solutions goes a long way. Offer a genuine apology and focus on how the situation can be rectified. Be polite, genuine, and let them know you hear what they’re saying.”
  • Stick to the facts. “If you can’t come to a solution, calmly let [the Karen] know why. At this point, it’s important to keep your head, explain the situation factually, not subjectively, and keep emotions in check so you don’t poke the proverbial bear,” Weller explained.
  • Keep records and protect yourself. “Keep communication open and transparent and record what’s taking place.”
  • Know your rights. Weller also said it’s good to know your legal rights and what customers are entitled to. “If you ever feel like you could be on the verge of a legal issue, you should seek professional legal advice as soon as you’re able to. There’s also plenty of resources for free online.”

For anyone wondering, this is the Moby Dick ride and how it’s meant to run: “Moby Dick is a ride for ages 6+ that goes in a wipe-on wipe-off motion,” NicotineAmy said. “It’s what I’d like to call a test ride for kids who want to go on faster rides. The ride doesn’t go SUPER fast. When I said I put it on the fastest speed, it’s really not that fast. If you look at the video, you can see how the ride works! I run the ride the same way they do in the video!”

“I didn’t change how the ride was meant to be at all, I just held them up top for an extra 5 seconds from what I normally would do,” NicotineAmy further explained on Reddit after her post went viral.

“I’ve stopped rides before for medical emergencies, panic attacks, vomiting, seizures. It’s my job to watch the guests who are on the ride and make calls. I could tell she was just scared; every day, I get people screaming ‘stop’, stomping, and yelling and it’s just their reaction to the ride. You can tell when they mean to get me off this second vs. the ‘omg omg omg’ reaction. I’d never willingly put someone in danger.”

“I’ve been doing my job long enough to know when something is truly wrong,” NicotineAmy continued. “She paid to go, willingly got on to the ride, and even pulled the seat down. She knew what she was getting into.” She just got a free extra!

Yeesh, that was not a fun read at all. I know that the lady was acting rude, but in this case the punishment was way worse than the crime. Is it just me, or did OP take way too much pleasure in torturing her? Making the ride go so fast that she's literally sobbing hysterically to be let off, then stopping the ride at the highest point? As someone who's terrified of rollercoasters, this sounds like an absolute nightmare. Where does OP work so that I can never give them my business ever? I don't ever want to get on a ride operated by someone who can decide he can deliberately torment anyone he wants.

"Interestingly, the biggest Karens aren’t actually named Karen." The biggest bi*ches I've known have been named Karen. My aunt Karen, my cousin Karen, my ex-bff, my husband's ex-wife. I actually have never known a Karen that I liked.

Was the operator a child themselves? Absolutely criminal to knowingly threaten the safety of the public. This story is also very enlightening, I don't go to amusement parks any more because every ride I've ever been on has been unsafe. The bar never will "click" and flips completely out on a loop. This is consistent every where. And I always for assistance as I'm supposed to for safety. Now I see that the operators have been intentionally hateful towards me what I don't get is why. Is it because I ask for them to check that I'm secure and then they have a way to release it??? Why does every operator do this??? I ask politely and only when they come to me and it's my turn. I don't make a big deal, I just ask. Every time. One ride at hershy I literally Rose 3/4 the ride with just my arms holding the shoulder straps dangling from my bucket until the end. After that I learned the wedge technique, just push my tiny body as hard as I can against each wall because after that first loop it

I looked up the ride on Google: https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=moby+d**k+ride&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 It's one of those horizontal swing rides and there doesn't look like there's any way to control the speed as described.

There is a lever in the control booth similar to a Ferris Wheel's. There is a max speed but the further the lever is pushed in either direction the faster it goes. We did a science day at an amusement park and got to learn how some of the rides work including a similar one to this one.

I do wish Karens would read stories like this and realize that they act like this and change their behavior. But are Karens really capable of that sort of self-knowledge? I kind of doubt it.

So the answer to a woman being petty and rude is to be dangerously cavalier and equally petty? Get her off the ride, have the manager reprimand her within the limits of the park. That's the way to respond rather than act as the gatekeeper of morality. This wasn't a good story at all- it just pushes people to act in as justice vigilantes that furthermore virtue signal. I hope this story is fake.

The need to mistreat someone because the way you perceive them is at the heart of what racism and prejudice is. It's almost as if in order to accept that certain groups have been marginalized we have to declare open season on a new generalized class of people we can openly throw stones at in a socially acceptable way. In reality the better choice is to do away with the bad behavior as a whole. There is no good that comes from marginalizing anyone, including those others perceive as privileged or whiny. With that being said this story is likely a pure fabrication.

Almost forgot, type 1 diabetic ppl with the pumps will act the same way that a Karen does when their sugar bottoms out. My late father in law will act like a kid and whines. He has hit EMTs before and takes off running saying he ain't going to a damn hospital. He has took my car keys before and started playing with the car alarm when someone walked by the car. When sugar is sky high he became hateful and will pout and stump like a Karen. He passed 2 yrs ago, heart attack and sugar bottomed out. Always make sure before you record a Karen or punishing a Karen that or it can make you the Karen instead IF they can NOT help it due to mental/med illness/disorder.

Last Part: Being negative by a parent/grandparents/legal guardians can mess up someone's mind just as much as being abused. Before assuming someone is a Karen, observe her... She may have mental issues (like bi polar, schizophrenic, OCD, ODD, she can also be disabled (like cerebral palsy or Autistic). If you punish a Karen on a ride, you may wanna make sure she doesn't have medical problems beforehand, they can have a heart attack, or panic attack, they may end up puking in everyone if they have vertigo. The Karen can sue if she has medical problems like I listed if something does happen to her and the employee ignores her. Always make sure before someone punishes the Karen on a ride. Karen's can also try to sue someone if she does have a mental disorder and can scream "discrimination" cause she has a mental or medical disorder and you knew it". Or just let karma handle it just in case they do have a disorder that could cause them to act like that.

They do embellish things, They also accidentally tattle on their own self (my 18yr old is bad about doing that). They rather have online friends instead of real friends (so they won't know about the way she acts cause she lost most of her friends over the years due to her being OCD and the constant whining, rudeness and tattling and denying she did anything wrong) The Karen thats in this article reminds me of my 18yr old. She has way too many OCD signs just to automatically assume she's a Karen. She may been really rude and mocking kids and demanding over stupid things(that's her way of getting attention my daughter did that ever since she was 5 when her little sister was born cause her dad would ignore her unless she did something bad. She was also verbally abused by her dad since she was 5, just like he did me. That made her OCD even worse until 2017 when I left their dad and took my kids with me. Being Physically Abused/or verbally abused as a child can cause OCD. Part4

She also accused a boy in class, boy on her bus and my brother. My brother had to take a lie detector test in jail(drug relative).. He nvr touched her either. She also had over 1k pictures of Olivia from SVU (she was obsessed with her) Well she got kicked out of school for the rest of the year because her and her friend made an Instagram account and put pics of one of their teachers up of him bending over and had "sexy" hashtag in the picture and teacher kept blocking them so they found him on Snapchat and begged him to follow them. He reported it to the school on all the pics they snuck and took of him at school and posted on social media, they stalked him. So they expelled her for the rest of the school year.. Ppl with OCD can act very rude from out of nowhere, they will say things that will hurt sensitive ppl without thinking, they can steal, they can have many obsessions, they can also be bipolar having OCD with their extreme mood swings, they do tattle over nothing Part3

She became obsessed with Law and Order SVU back in highschool. She started accusing males of touching her and said she had proof on her phone. When she had to fork over her phone to DSS and to a detective so they will have evidence and take warrants out. She had deleted em "so she said". She was told they have a way to pull up all of her deleted text, pics, internet history...ect... She freaked out and told our case worker that they don't believe her and she thought she was her friend. Anyways they couldn't find any deleted messages from 2 different males. That's when they got dss involved in a different state to give one of her touchers a lie detector test. So they did and the person wasn't lying when he denied touching her and the only person he ever touched was me. This was her pop pop that was accused. He did that stuff to me and my ex husband knew about it and wouldn't make him stop and thought it was funny plus he can blackmail him. But he has never touched his grand kids. Part2

This would be something that my 13yr old daughter would come up with for a story that she is writing. I don't think this would happen in RL. The so called Karen could had OCD or majorly bi polar(which BOTH are very common both in females and males). If this really had happened if the so called Karen was bipolar or had OCD(ocd can actually make an adult act like a child on being obsessed on any giving object or place or person. My 18yr old daughter has OCD since she was 5, the Dr thought it was ADHD 1st up until she was 8. She went to a mental medical Dr when she was ripping toe nails off and wanting to die cause of a bully told her that no one loved her that she might as well die since no one loved her. She also had a bad habit of stealing from school stores and taking iphones and ipads off and on all of her upper elementary and highschool life. If she got caught stealing she would deny it until the parents gets law enforcement involved, she also spread lies about others.... Part 1

Mixed feelings on what the operator did, but I don't feel that bad for Karen. I would have handled it differently. I just wouldn't have let her on the ride and called security to say she was harassing guests, specifically children and their families. I might have asked her friend if she needed a rescue too lol.

Sick, dumb narrative. And the undertone of revenge where the woman is injured, justifiably so? Hey, people say a lot of stuff. And yeah, it can be mean. But it doesn't empower us to revenge on them with bodily harm. Or destroy the lives of every precious Karen out there who doesn't deserve this hateful prejudice. It's white prejudice too. Duh. No one's thinking about a black Karen here. How about a white Kuanisha? Man. This human race.

First off using names of minority people for nagitive things was a thing historically so don't act like this is a phenomenon that has only effected white people you should maybe Crack a book and do some research before opening your mouth. 2nd Karen is the name most people have run in to retail horror story's with at some point and in the TOP TEN names of people who complain its not a name pulled out of thin air it has a basis. So maybe don't choose this as the hill you die on and just back down it now yah.

Right on!!! What a horrible person. There's no way any Karen could be happy with anything or anyone. I can't imagine being like that. Karma's a BI#%H!

I think of that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meme evey time a person verbally or physically abuses another person in control of their health, safety or food. Revenge might be immoral or illegal, but are these "Karen's" surprised?!?

The need to mistreat someone because the way you perceive them is at the heart of what racism and prejudice is. It's almost as if in order to accept that certain groups have been marginalized we have to declare open season on a new generalized class of people we can openly throw stones at in a socially acceptable way. In reality the better choice is to do away with the bad behavior as a whole. There is no good that comes from marginalizing anyone, including those others perceive as privileged or whiny. With that being said this story is likely a pure fabrication.

Can we stop chalking up this kind of behavior to mental illness? They're not mentally ill, they're just entitled bullies who have never been told 'no' before.

If this is real, the operator should be sacked. The operator should have called for help from a person in charge to escort the woman off the ride.

There are sadly so many Karen's out there...most of them you just have to pity for their complete lack of any self awareness...

And can we not be so toxic about the things the OP did? Please? Instead of openly mocking her, give her some advice on how to fix it, shall we? This whole thing was on how not to be a frickin Karen and yet y'all are being Karens. Shout-out to Mega Gay for the comment on pointing out bullcrap.

because obviously, keeping a grown woman on the ride after she harrasses children, speeding the ride up to fast, making her cry, and putting other people on the ride in danger is sooo much better than telling karen off and banning her from the ride

I find it evil that we are unilaterally approving name prejudice. Can you imagine a narrative about a Kuanisha and her rantings at McDonald's for not getting her order right? Smashing chairs, napkin holders, trash cans, etc at the employee s for getting her order wrong?

First off using names of minority people for nagitive things was a thing historically so don't act like this is a phenomenon that has only effected white people you should maybe Crack a book and do some research before opening your mouth. 2nd Karen is the name most people have run in to retail horror story's with at some point and in the TOP TEN names of people who complain its not a name pulled out of thin air it has a basis. So maybe don't choose this as the hill you die on and just back down it now yah.
