Growing up in a European country and never witnessing what it's like to go to an American school, watching American high school comedies, to me, has always been a pretty surreal experience. I'm sure that most of you fellow non-Americans reading this article could relate to me on this.

There are so many things about American schools that have always seemed utterly fascinating to me. For instance, you get letter grades instead of number ones, schools have swimming pools inside them, there's a club for almost anything, you have to get a hall pass to go to the bathroom during class, and lunch meals are usually pretty bizarre. The list goes on. With that being said, Bored Panda invites you to look through this list of tweets from non-American Twitter users in which they share things that they find the strangest about American schools. Feel free to explain to us the things we don't understand or add your own in the comment section!

Yes, but the cheerleaders were just normal students, not stuck up and they didn't wear their uniforms in class.

We have lockers in our homerooms, and we aren't allowed to use our backpacks throughout the day. We have to carry all our books, and aren't allowed to visit our homerooms between most classes. I'm surprised I still have stick arms -_-

Well, you don't want to haul all your text books class to class. You need a place to store them. And you need a place to hang up your coat.

In Romania, we had to carry everything for the day in our backpacks. Books, notepads, pen holders, snacks. We kept our backpacks in our benches all day. Some lockers would have been great, though.

Why is it weird to have a secure place to put your things? There are a lot of heavy books, supplies for things like art classes, gym clothes for changing out or after school sports, and lunch if you've brought it. You want to carry all that all day?

School in Australia had them when I was there. Sure beats lugging around books needed for the day (also pre-laptop years which might make a difference now). Biggest difference was that our lockers didn't lock ... ah trust, where did it go?

Kids in areas with cold weather have coats, gloves, boots in the winter. All kids have MULTIPLE text books, folders, supplies, etc. - too many to carry to six/seven different classrooms per day.

Had lockers in elementary, middle and high school. Had two sets of textbooks (one kept at home so I wouldn’t need to carry too much stuff-chronic pain as a kid) and the other in locker…used them to keep my jacket and lunch as well as my PE clothes and switched out at lunch the texts I needed. I’m from Western Canada

We had lockers in school, but not as big as those Anerican ones I've seen on tv. I used it to put in the books for the afternoon classes in the morning and vice versa, so I hadn't to carry all those heavy books the whole day. Also a good place to keep my wallet and gym clothes when I didn't need those.

They don't do a lot of homework so they leave their books in school most of the time. Here we have homework several times a week so all books go home every day.

Some schools do. A lot of schools did away with them. I graduated in 1989 and we were the last ones to use them at our school A set of books at home and one in class (its only one extra set, really) and then no carrying all of that crap back and forth. My kids graduated in 2014 and 2015 and they have never used lockers in their lives.

It provides a place for students to store books, clothes, etc. when they don't need them for class. They are going away now and being replaced by backpacks 'cause lockers can also be used to store weapons, drugs, etc. Note that some backpacks are bulletproof.

Mine didn't and we were expected to bring our text books to each class. So 7 classes means you are carrying around 7 extremely heavy books all day long and it is actually a huge health issue.

I'm in NZ. We had lockers at my first high school, but not enough for everyone (senior students got preference over juniors). And you had to pay a fee to use it, as well as a refundable bond on the key.

Yep, we sure do! They are meant to hold books, school supplies, lunch and jacket so students do not loose them or need to carry them around to every class. When each class has a heavy text book, that's a lot of weight to lug around to each class!

We have them but many students forego their use because shockingly 5 minutes isn't enough time to bolt to a random hallway, input a combination, swap out books etc for next class, and bolt to wherever it is the next class is held.

Yes, but I hear there are going away since most textbooks are going to digital. It's fun to have your own little place to put whatever you want books, supplies, coat, baby chandelier, and fun pictures and inspirational quotes. There are locker checks randomly to make sure people are not storing drugs in them.

Our school took out the lockers after a vandalism incident like 15 years ago and still haven't put them back. We have to carry everything with us in bags. Usually we'd leave books in classroom but since corona we have to carry about 5 books plus textbooks and lunch and water bottles etc all around and to and from school. My back is in constant pain every time I get back from school and Wednesdays are a blessing since we get only 4 lessons instead 5 (but only every other Wed)

Yep, we had lockers -- but at my high school we doubled up to save money. I usuall had just books and tablets in my half -- but "The Beast" in the other half stored everything. If our locker exploded or an minkfarm was raided in his half, I would have believed it.

Yes to store books, bags, etc, run businesses out of. And you can put on your own lock on it. It is effective storage for students so you dont need to bring home your books when you dont need them and more.

And back in my day we had full sized lockers, so I could fit even my violin case in my locker easily and hang my winter coat up, and still have a nice shelf at the top to put most of my books on. Then I could grab just the books I needed for the next class or two instead of having to haul 15 kilos (or 30 lbs) all day long. Much more practical!

Here in Switzerland as of 5 year old have to carry very heavy backpacks with about 10 kls of books and school supplies. It's unfortunate that such little children must take all of their supplies back and forth from homes to school; some eat lunch at home making the going back and forth 3 times per day.

They’re great for all the crap the students need to bring in! They decorate them they keep their hidden stuff there instead of at home and on occasion when I’ve gone into a student’s locker I have found many weird things. I had a student who put frogs in a girls locker as a joke, another who pooped in someone’s locker and a student who kept a carton of milk in one so as to stink up the entire hallway and cause janitors to look for where the smell came from for days.
