Schools differ from country to country, and there are some pretty interesting school systems in the world. In The Netherlands, for example, kids start school on their 4th birthday, no matter when the school year starts. Kids in China, in turn, learn on the principle of memorization.

And then there's the US. What most of us know about American schools probably comes from movies and TV. But what are schools in the US really like? Well, here we have a list of pics from many primary sources, the students themselves. They capture the true experience of the American school.

Florida passed a law that said no books can be displayed in a school, until they've been reviewed and approved by an appointed team. If a teacher shows a book that has not been approved, they could be charged with a felony.

I worked at a school in the UK that would lock all of the toilets during lesson time. One of the girls I was working with got her period and I had to take her halfway across the school to find one. It's inhumane.

Our school still maintains the same rule but teachers almost never enforce it and they certainly haven’t resorted to installing gates.

That wouldn’t have lasted a single day at my school. Students and their parents alike would’ve not just rattled their toolboxes … and this monstrosity would have mysteriously vanished before the break of dawn. My school’s janitor would have “forgotten” to lock the main entrance to the building on that particular night. Well, “accidents” happen … B–)

So they'd rather have students be excused from class to use the restrooms? I'd think going between classes would be preferred: not missing part of the class, not interrupting to ask to be excused.... This makes no sense.

As much as I love faux outrage, this is usually done during off seasons to limit the use of facilities and maintenance. I'd wager there are open bathrooms in the active parts of the facilities. Because, yes, it would be illegal otherwise.

Just the blocking access to disabled toilets alone is surely illegal? I'm not speaking for every disabled person btw. Each disability is unique but I can't always feel if I need to "go" straight away. Well... I'll just have to poop in the hallway then. You blocked the access, YOU can clean up the mess.

Don't understand why they still build schools with two gendered bathrooms of multiple stalls when the gender neutral version with its own door directly off the hallway is also a thing. Old schools are one thing, but schools literally under construction right now are still being built with the "gendered bathroom where everyone can hear you go" model. I've heard a lot of reasons why it could never work, but none of those things is currently happening in the accessible bathrooms, which are single gender neutral stalls off the corridor.

All the angry people, please take a minute to think. I have worked in a few secondary schools. Children with medical needs do have passes. Children unexpectedly caught short, are allowed to go to the bathroom. Children getting used to periods are understood. However, there are kids who ask to go to the toilet just to make trouble. I'm not talking about just wanting to get out of class for a bit either. 2 members of staff need to be paid to look after toilets, which still gets vandalised and can be scary places for many students. Many kids (especially with ASD) will not go at all even if desperate because of the problem children. Vapes set of fire alarms and block toilets all the time. Anxious non attenders often listening toilet worries as one fear of school - not that teachers won't let them go, but that they will need to face badly behaved bullies there. And yet whenever schools try and limit the problem, so toilets are safe non scary places, everyone starts yelling like we are cruel

My question is, did they do this to every bathroom? Summer school has fewer students than during a normal school year. It could be that they closed the bathrooms in an unused wing of the school.

I’m going to take a shot on this. It says summer, so I’m thinking they closed up most of the bathrooms since there isn’t many students. They didn’t want to clean every bathroom. I’m guessing on this. Or it could have been malicious.

And schools have still learned nothing. Kids do d***s in school bathrooms. Rather than deal with the problem (and consequently have their numbers look bad) they simply lock the bathrooms except for one that is easy to check (near the office). Kids in Parkland died outside of locked bathrooms.

Currently, American schools lag a bit behind other countries in the world in terms of their students' academic achievements. When they tested 15-year-olds in their math and science literacy, American teenagers ranked only 38th out of 71 countries. Among other 37 OECD countries in 2022, Americans ranked 38th in math and 12th in science.

Younger students, however, are doing surprisingly more well. In 2015, American fourth-grade students placed 11th out of 48 in math and 8th in science. Eighth-graders scored 8th both in math and science among 37 other countries.

Interestingly, Americans don't think that the quality of education in the U.S. is above average. In fact, 32% of adults believe that when it comes to K-12 STEM education, America ranks below average compared to other wealthy nations. But are statistics of academic achievement all that matter when we talk about schools?

The National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, also surveys children about how they feel at school. Data shows that younger students report feeling happy "all or most of the time" more than older students. 49% of fourth-graders say they're happy at school, while only 27% of eighth-graders say the same.
