Schools differ from country to country, and there are some pretty interesting school systems in the world. In The Netherlands, for example, kids start school on their 4th birthday, no matter when the school year starts. Kids in China, in turn, learn on the principle of memorization.

And then there's the US. What most of us know about American schools probably comes from movies and TV. But what are schools in the US really like? Well, here we have a list of pics from many primary sources, the students themselves. They capture the true experience of the American school.

Florida Teacher Here. This Is Our School’s "Library" Now

Florida passed a law that said no books can be displayed in a school, until they've been reviewed and approved by an appointed team. If a teacher shows a book that has not been approved, they could be charged with a felony.

It really is unbelievable how tone deaf the the people who pass these laws are. Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 were not guidebooks. They were WARNINGS!

I read recently that China has given up on banning books. Apparently, the leadership thinks that there's no point any more. Admittedly, the Chinese Communist Party does totally control what books are allowed in schools, so maybe it's not a fair comparison.

Florida here: We just held primarys for the upcoming November elections. All the members of the movement to ban books from school got booted from school boards. Internet lumps everyone together but reality is a small group of ultra Christian folks started this and the Governor is part of that crew. If the book’s discus Racial Identity, gender identity, homosexuality, or a point of view of history outside the Christian extreme (think slavery) they get pulled for review. Here’s where the sensational story ends. The review boards deny the ban and the book goes back. Unfortunately, this takes forever so the group that band them wins for a good bit of time. Same group that’s banning books is the group that voted to basically make abortion illegal in Florida after 18 days or something ridiculous. - We are Witnesses to the last stand of the American Christian Evangelicals. To be clear, not the last stand of Christianity but a certain group. Basically the ones who think Jesus was a white guy.

This is drama and horse s**t. Anyone that believes this b******t is already brainwashed. Books are only being reviewed because of DELIBERATE attempts to insert massively age-inappropriate books into children's schools. Just like you wouldn't expect a PORN MAG in a school library, these so-called 'BOOKS' also don't belong. Stop child grooming and there is ZERO issue. Progressives have gotten more books 'CANCELED' in the last few years because after nearly 100 years they were 'SUDDENLY OFFENSIVE!!!' than anyone else has. GROW UP. And stop trying to force children to grow up before they should be.

@Peter B, I'm afraid you've been conned into believing the lies put about by Florida's new book censors. The truth is here: https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/roughly-300-books-were-removed-from-libraries-in-florida-last-school-year-heres-the-full-list/3113184/ The law allows any book to be banned (at least temporarily) if it's complained about. The result is that books are getting banned if they contradict some busy body's personal ideology. It's got nothing to do with removing "age inappropriate" books from school libraries - that's just a lie put about to excuse this attempt to get censorship in via the back door. They've banned Anne Frank's Diary, for heaven's sake! Mostly, it's about banning books which feature absolutely age-appropriate coverage of personal relationships of the sort which are essential in school libraries but offend those who consider themselves "conservative Christians".

The books getting banned are all age-appropriate books which help children grow up into healthy adults, with a good understanding of relationship issues on a level which will help them avoid predatory adults. The ones banning the books are those who pose a threat to children. https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/roughly-300-books-were-removed-from-libraries-in-florida-last-school-year-heres-the-full-list/3113184/

Absolutely fake reporting. The law restricted the display of pornographic materials to school kids. Certain libraries are going all drama queen on it, claiming they have to review the materials because yes, if they are displaying pornographic materials to children they can get in trouble. But the notion that they need an appointed team to make that determination on each and every book is risible b******t. And now, I'm going to get voted down for correcting this because we all know who the real censors are.

Forrest Hobbs

The law in Florida bans books that get complained about. Those in favour of the ban say it's about restricting pornography, but actually it's used to ban utterly normal school library books such as Anne Frank's Diary. Here's the list of banned books: not one of them could be considered pornography by a reasonable person. https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/roughly-300-books-were-removed-from-libraries-in-florida-last-school-year-heres-the-full-list/3113184/

Currently, American schools lag a bit behind other countries in the world in terms of their students' academic achievements. When they tested 15-year-olds in their math and science literacy, American teenagers ranked only 38th out of 71 countries. Among other 37 OECD countries in 2022, Americans ranked 38th in math and 12th in science.

Younger students, however, are doing surprisingly more well. In 2015, American fourth-grade students placed 11th out of 48 in math and 8th in science. Eighth-graders scored 8th both in math and science among 37 other countries.

That's not right. If schools were that paranoid about it, they should have issued each student separate devices. Another thing that concerned me with online classrooms is students who were already vulnerable and bullied at school had their personal space exposed to their bullies and that eliminated their safe, private space.

Interestingly, Americans don't think that the quality of education in the U.S. is above average. In fact, 32% of adults believe that when it comes to K-12 STEM education, America ranks below average compared to other wealthy nations. But are statistics of academic achievement all that matter when we talk about schools?

The National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, also surveys children about how they feel at school. Data shows that younger students report feeling happy "all or most of the time" more than older students. 49% of fourth-graders say they're happy at school, while only 27% of eighth-graders say the same.

These are probably out-of-date textbooks that no longer correspond to the curriculum. They can be donated, but I've had donation centers refuse old textbooks as they say no one buys them.

I found it easier to just carry my backpack with me. There was never enough time to go to my locker between classes. There was barely enough time to get from a class at one end of the school to the next class on the other side of the school.

Ok I see both pro and con with this. Pro - you buy a ticket to go to a dance and have fun with friends so you get out of homework. Con - you either have no friends, or no money, to go to said dance or you just plain don't want to go so now you're stuck doing homework even if you don't go for a reason outside your control.

My Girlfriend Just Got A Job Teaching At A D-Rated Elementary School In Florida. How Do I Clean The Kid's Bathroom?

Enzysan. If you can get the maintenance director to buy it, it works. Otherwise bleach the s*** out of it at the end of the day. let THEM clean it up. Of course someone doing their job would be best. I would have SUCH a sense of shame if I walked out after cleaning and it looked like this. Also, put in a maintenance request to have the BathRoom painted...with enamel paint.
