Travel influencer Kristen Gray, who spent 2020 in Bali and went viral for a Twitter thread encouraging others to move to the Indonesian island, is now being deported, multiple outlets report.

The 28-year-old self-described “digital nomad” and her girlfriend Saundra Alexander, 30, are, as of Wednesday morning, awaiting a flight back to the United States while in immigration detention, according to the Associated Press.

Gray’s viral Twitter thread caught the attention of the local government, which claims she was carrying out business endeavors in Bali without having the correct visa to do so.

Kristen Gray and her girlfriend had been living in Bali, an island in Indonesia with a large tourism industry, for about a year as “digital nomads”

But her recent Twitter thread about her experience in Bali while promoting the sale of the couple’s e-book received huge backlash

Indonesia has restricted foreigners from coming to the country since Jan. 1 to control the spread of Covid, and public activities have been restricted on the islands of Java and Bali

Her tweets were considered to have “disseminated information disturbing to the public,” which was the basis for her deportation, said Jamaruli Manihuruk, chief of the Bali regional office for the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

A statement from the office highlighted her descriptions of Bali providing comfort for LGBT and being easily accessible during the pandemic. It also referenced tweets with links to her e-book, which had direct links to agents who were offering help to foreigners who wanted to move to the island.

“She stated that she could provide easy access to Bali through the recommended agency and offered the low living costs in Bali, that it is comfortable and LGBTQ-friendly,” Manihuruk said at a news conference Tuesday.

Gray supposedly was offering an e-book costing $30 and a follow-up consultation about becoming an expatriate in Bali for $50. “She is suspected of carrying out business activities by selling e-books and put a rate for consulting (about) Bali tourism,” Manihuruk said.

Gray, however, thinks she did nothing wrong and is being deported for speaking out about LGBT

“I am not guilty,” Gray told reporters after Immigration officials announced the deportation. “I have not overstayed my (tourist) visa. I am not making money in Indonesian rupiah. I put out a statement about LGBT and I am deported because of LGBT.”

While homosexuality is technically legal in Indonesia (except Aceh, a province with strict Islamic laws), there has been a disturbing rise in persecution against LGBT individuals in recent years, which international NGO Human Rights Watch labeled as an “anti-LGBT moral panic” in 2018.

A recent survey by the Pew Research Center found that only around 9 percent of Indonesians say homosexuality should be accepted.

Social psychologist Benny Siauw personally thinks the way Gray mentioned Bali as a queer-friendly place is highly ignorant. “She was not aware of her privileges as a foreigner, with a stronger currency that gives her more safety compared to the underprivileged local LGBT people,” Siauw told Bored Panda. “Here, the LGBT communities have been facing persecutions and other forms of discrimination long before she came [to the country].”

“Every time there’s sensational news about LGBT, the homophobes use it as an opportunity to show up on social media and speak out loud with so much hate. Of course, at the very least this leads to unnecessary distress for local LGBT people,” Siauw explained. “It is a daily struggle for them, whether we’re talking about family or peer acceptance. That being said, every time big LGBT news breaks out, everything becomes much harder for them, especially in such challenging times like this pandemic.”

The psychologist said that numerous people have contacted him, expressing how sick and tired they’ve become to find themselves in this situation. “They already have enough homophobia to deal with in their lives. Nobody needs that hate in the first place. In a country where conversion therapy has been promoted, this whole ordeal might lead to further self-stigmatization … and we know that this process might also lead to self-hate that directly causes a lot of mental distress.”

“With all of these considerations, I really hope that media platforms, both national and international, would be more careful in covering this case. Especially when it comes to clickbait titles [about Gray being deported because of her LGBT statement] because it is a very gross oversimplification of the whole thing,” Siauw said.

Deported after not paying taxes and publicly encouraging others to come do the same thing? Inconceivable! Oh it's a conspiracy because she's black/gay/female/... -- in this case, not.

I read “LGBTQ friendly” thinking WHAT??? Since when! Really offensive and ignorant to loudly claim something so untrue and so unsafe for the native LGBTQ+ community. Honestly her whole thread was problematic, the lack of respect is overwhelming! I’d deport her entitled, privileged a** too.

Two ailments that can be imrpoved by changing your diet, not cured, as you said, but significantly improved. She can probably afford better food - lots of fruits and vegetables - than she would in the US.

US tourist overstays her visa and makes bank on the internet and then encourages other US citizens to move there during a pandemic...breaks a bunch of Bali laws and then plays the " But I'm Gay and Black" cards. Get with reality, sweetie.

I notice from the pic she wasn't social distancing but then maybe it wasn't needed in Bali? But encouraging people to travel ANYWHERE during a pandemic is stupid, and I can understand why the authorities are annoyed and you don't need to be earning money in the country's currency to be liable for tax. Sounds like they've probably been evading US tax too. I'm not sure why she'd say it was LGBTQ friendly when it so obviously isn't? What if someone went there based on this recommendation, they could be imprisoned or worse..

Deserved all she got. How dare she brag about how to avoid their laws of tax and talk about the country with such disdain. As previously mentioned, she flouted her western privilege so to enhance her life with absolute disrespect to the host country. Her being Black (as I am) has nothing to do with why she is being deported. Her show off style of being gay is so disrespectful to gay natives who struggle to be openly gay. She's a disgrace.

It's incredible to me that she is attempting to relegate the Balinese people to the fate of Blacks in America, and does not see the immorality or irony of her actions. I'm going to bet she complains about the way Blacks are treated in the US--gentrification of neighborhoods to exclude the people that have spent generations there, the "xxx while Black" indignities that are suffered on a daily basis, the disproportionate numbers of Blacks incarcerated--but would deny the same indignities are occurring to the Balinese. We have our "White Privilege" here in the US that she's not part of; however, she has her "Western Privilege" in Bali which is very similar. I'm not saying it is right or OK, but I hope she has a bit of patience with those that deny or fail to understand exactly what we mean by "white privilege." It's not racism; it's not being aware of or affected by things that BIPOC deal with every single day. Just because.

First, I did not pick up a LGBT vibe from the story. Perhaps I missed that. In fact, when I learned one was GF of the other, not a thought entered my mind at all, it seemed that is the way. As I read through, it appeared these young ladies were promoting larceny. That was against the law. Everything else was additive to that primary charge. If you imagine you are an executive of this regional state and you get a call there are people taking complete advantage without a worry in the world. It would, however, upset you more when your told to do something about it immediately. I do not think this was a discrimination situation. There were law breakers, and were promoting law breaking. Simple as that. You got to go. Wow, they had a nice thing going.

Indonesia is a very conservative Muslim country that routinely executes LGBT citizens, jails women for not dressing in head to toe covers, and has slaughtered about 1/4 of their own population for not being Muslim. She's lucky she's not in prison or dead. Probably the only reason she wasn't killed by the authorities is that she's from the US.

I have a story to tell and feel free to comment if what happened was right or not or the choice was rightful or not... An introvert, visited by another friend, that friend find peace on introvert's house, promotes it to other friend, in result, other want to stay in introvert's house too because "it is peaceful" until everyone was there. The introvert ended up moving place because her space is now invaded because of unsolicited promotion. Now who's fault is it.

Yeah this one is a little rough. Just stunk of an influencer not understanding travel complexities. Yes, very inappropriate to suggest moving during a pandemic. I couldn’t see anything in the article that confirmed overstaying of tourist visa, perhaps she had an extension or long term? Violating the terms of her visa? Well, that one is trickier - tbh, most countries tax laws haven’t quite been updated for remote workers. I mean, if her company was American, paying taxes in the US, not doing business directly in Bali (only with overseas clients remotely?), though I couldn’t say if she was technically a resident for tax purposes. I could see her not knowing that she overstepped herself by collaborating with travel agencies. Seriously though, Bali is lovely but the past 8 years they’ve ramped their conservatism. At the end of the day, she showed clear intent to live in the country and not just visit. That alone is a violation of just about any country’s tourism visa.

AETNA website: "You are not allowed to work in Indonesia on a tourist or business visa — a business visa allows for a short-term work assignment or a training assignment, not for employment within Indonesia." It shouldn't need explaining, but boasting online that you're in breach of your host country regulations about work and taxation wins you a Darwin Award. The LGBQT bias stuff is just bullshit.

It's like the old story of the bird who tried to stick it out for the winter. He soon realized his mistake and tried to fly south, but his wings froze up and he fell into a hay pile next to a barn. Then a cow came by and crapped on him. The bird thought it couldn't get any worse until the heat of the manure started to thaw the bird out. He started singing, he was so happy. A cat heard him, found him and promptly ate him. If you are happy and love your situation...don't brag and feel like you have to tell the world..it could backfire on you.

She's an idiot. Seriously. She should have just kept her mouth shut but worked on trying to make a buck illegally and then whines she was deported for being gay. WELL that might have been a part of it but the rest was due to her stupidity in thinking she could get away with breaking laws and making money at it. IF she had just shut her big mouth she would still be living there. But "Karening" is NOT well or good anywhere AND it's literally messing with the heads of the women actually named Karen, giving some of them a complex. I really don't get it bc phonically it sounds like caring. Now Sue on the other hand is a term for a legal action against someone else and sounds more appropriate to me (especially Suellen = Sue Hĕll and...). Maybe I'm just prejudiced because every single Karen I've known has been wonderful and every single person I've ever met with any version of Sue for a name has been flat out evil.

Still, she might have been deported for talking about LGBT in social media. Sadly, Indonesia is more of a homophobic than orderly, lawful country.

If one is going to live in another country and make money while there, even if it is online, one should be paying taxes. One really shouldn't brag about how well off they are in a country, or on an island, full of much less fortunate people. Whether she was trying to do this or not, it really looked like she was flaunting her wealth; in front of citizens living hand to mouth. To offer to help someone get into a country in the middle of a pandemic is downright dumb. She didn't stop and think her idea through. She's a guest in another country. What she did is like if you're a guest in someone's house & you invite people over that they dont know, without asking for permission! Its presumptuous. And she absolutely was trying to make money off of her Bali experience. I known3 things about Indonesia: it's Muslim majority & the gov't doesnt want Christian missionaries, they have a lot of eathquakes, & they are *not* lgbtq friendly. She really imbodied the ignorant American tourist persona!

I hate so much how she's blaming the government for being homophobic. It diminishes actual cases of homophobia. Also it makes her "It's so LGBT+ friendly here!" sound pretty ridiculous.

This comment thread is pretty nasty. The truth is a lot of digital nomads live this way and most countries, including Indonesia, turn a blind eye. As long as you don't compete in the local market, they act like you're on business because the benefit to the country is that you spend money in their country. This is probably why she thought it was okay and referred to not making money in Indonesian currency. The reality is that they likely did get deported for most of the reasons she said said but mainly because that tweet drew too much attention. We all want to know how to get rich quick but we love just as much to see people fall. Pathetic.

US companies are getting anxie about having employees who live in other countries. All those folks who moved to places like Belize or Costa Rica and still worked full time may be in jeopardy. It seems to be a combination of possible tax problems for both he employee and the company - not paying the right taxes for essentially 'doing business' while in the country, and fears that non-US countries' labor laws may be more generous and more protective of employees, and that someone working full-time in another country could make use of those laws. The idea of living in paradise while making money sounds wonderful, but those darned 'details' can be problems.

She starts by referring to her "elevated" lifestyle and denigrating the States for bad energy. Clearly she's not very bright. Toxic and we dont want her back | And why does she end with "just woke up in Bali"? Thats like a shut-in saying "Just woke up at home." Uh, yeah, we know where you are. Take a look of women that are well known journalist acclaim at that but when they visit countries where women are not suppose to show no body parts they dont pull the whole I can do what I want just like I do in America they respect other cultures whether they agree or not with the rules of the country they visiting.

I feel bad for her. You know, she's still a person. Her actions were awful but at the end of the day, she's still black and queer and came to Bali to escape from the anxieties of the US. I wonder if she was genuinely misinformed by a predatory agency? Things aren't black and white and she herself is a minority so it feels awful to see people dunking on her even though I bet y'all don't say ANYTHING about the white backpackers in India.

As an American, this is awful. She didn't need a break from the US, and it's gross people are associating her with all of the US. What she needed a break from was LA...Problem is she took her LA attitude with her. LA is its own thing don't put that evil on the rest of the US lol you can live much nicer for much cheaper outside of the big cities in the US, which is most of the US honestly. The problem is people that are from these concentrated areas tend to look down on Middle states. There are also politics involved with that but people like this are so uneducated to how things really work. They are sheltered by some messed up news sources and develop a real entitled attitude and that America is this awful place and they would rather travel abroad and spread their ignorance than try to educate themselves on anything. Then, when they get caught, the rest of us in this gigantic country look bad. So frustrating. Most Americans aren't this dumb or entitled they are just louder.

Such a typically western arrogant attitude. The Republic of Indonesia should deport them all. They have no respect for the country or culture hosting them. No one has a right to live in Indonesia except the indigenous peoples of the archipelago and anyone else who is 100% respectful toward the authority of the government and its laws.

*Phenomenally* arrogant, and ignorant. To have lived for almost a year in a predominantly Muslim country, knowingly breaking laws - local and immigration - and to loudly proclaim yourself as hard-done by? That is so amazingly stereotypically “American Millennial” it is gobsmacking. The list of horrendous behaviours - not just those which, oh noes, turned out to be illegal - is simply too long to list. And sadly, listing them won’t do our precious snowflake subject any good anyway as they would bounce off the multiple halos she has constructed for herself and her cohort. I do hope, however, that the immigration agents she has said she would link to do not suffer a worse (read locals’) fate unless she can provide written evidence of them responding positively to her enquiries on how to successfully breach her visa conditions. Their fate is unlikely to be a room in Denpasar awaiting deportation to an uninterrupted career.

Here we go with the cancel culture bullshit knee-jerk responses. Was what she did great? No, I can think of much worse. Maybe a bit insensitive/arrogant but you're all overreacting. You want to create this 'perfect' society where no one ever makes mistakes and their is zero freedom of speech. Humans are stupid and they say stupid things. That doesn't mean she is a bad person or deserves all this hate, as you're relegating her actions to that of a white supremacist by simple association of the fact that she pulled the LGBTQ/black female card at the wrong time. The way I see it, she had no other option. What would you do in the same situation? And the BS 'OH I would never do that in the first place cause I'm so morally superior' circle jerk is not applicable here. You are all just stroking your own egos of superiority and failing to understand basic human empathy.

Fact of the matter is, I can't stand most influencers as they typically are successful because they can get off the fact that they are a perfect 10 with butt implants and a bunch of plastic surgery. Which takes minimal skills. We're talking about a black female here, who is average looking at best, and grew up in the US facing the systemic oppression of both being a black female and being gay. Not an easy ride compared to white males by any means. And somehow despite of her averageness she figured out a way to make money doing something not everyone can do. I think this just paints more to your own insecurities and jealously in the fact that you're not lucky or clever enough to make a living the way she does, being able to work remotely posting pictures since you're stuck in an office cubicle or warehouse 5 days a week. Is she entitled and arrogant? Maybe. But if you look at her actual posts she is saying pretty reasonable things for the most part about the country.

Wile this woman is clueless on so many levels, you MUST ask if a blonde-white-female did this, would the responses here be the same? Skin color and sexual orientation are ALWAYS a factor in EVERYTHING - whether you want to believe it or not. Just by saying someone is pulling a race/gender card is ignoring the fact that 1) they did not create the "deck" and 2) they hold none of the "cards" in the first place. Work with that metaphor...

For the most part, you CANNOT CURE these things, "in remission" is the best you get. Relying on unproven/ disproven herbal remedies instead of reliable treatments while your condition worsens until it's untreatable or even fatal isn't a good idea.

A great and important article - thanks to the author. This brings many of today's conflicts to the point. We live in a world where infantile attitudes rule over wisdom and intelligence. All my life I wondered about the superficialty and lack of intuition and empathy of western, especially US-american travellers. Nowadays we experience a worldwide movement who wants more rights but no duties, no adult behaviour. It all is about fun, entertainment and the avoidance of pain. The world is more than a game. What this woman tries to explain to the world is extremely ignorant. We experience a worldwide movement against wisdom embodied from many parts of society which identify as suppressed. There is not any wisdom in terms of what it means to gain same rights. It means to be forced to grow up, to be an adult. Imagine white people would post such things. They would be called Nazi's, racists. Feminsm is sexism, BLM means racism. Some painful truths for people who do not see the whole picture.

As previously mentioned, she flouted her western privilege so to enhance her life with absolute disrespect to the host country.

I used to work with a coworker with a disgusting Asian fetish. An average looking white guy at best who spends every free moment flying to Asia to play white knight. He knocked up a Japanese woman and now is living in Indonesia living like royalty because the cost of living is so low. I won't be surprised if he leaves his current wife and child behind in yet another Asian conquest.

This is so condescending, going to live in a country were people live on 200 euros a month and live the La Vie en Rouge because you've had all the opportunities in life and can live like a queen there when in your home country you'd de sleeping in your car. She has been, taking advantage, to enjoy her life style, while the residents , suffer from her greed, that bothers me, it would be different, if she was doing something, to help the residents, greed is something, I can not tolerate, with so many people in poverty, and some people so wealthy, some could help others, instead of thinking only of themselves, I agree with the deportation !!!

Move to a mostly Islamic country then complain when they deport you for bragging about it being LGBT friendly? Sure girl, whatever. You're lucky you didn't end up in prison or worse. You don't go to other countries and demand THEY change THEIR culture to accommodate YOU. And that goes for people immigrating to the US too.

An old friend of mine moved there with her husband 18 years ago and they love it there and say the same thing SHUT THE F**K UP about things that may upset the local clerics or authorities and they do.
