Health care in the U.S seems to be one of those topics that can divide up a room quickly. What is the best system? What’s wrong with the current system? Who can implement the best ideas? Well, according to the Pew Research Center, regardless of income, 83% of Americans say that the high cost of medical treatments is what makes quality care unaffordable to the public.

If you have never been forced to take a hard look at the medical system in action it may be difficult to understand exactly how much these treatments can be. So someone on Reddit re-shared the story of a 71-year-old man who lost his wife to cancer, and the the toll the expense of medical care took on their lives. And I will stick to the Canadian one too. It is not necessarily free because we have astronomical taxes but when I see someone sick and getting treatment without going broke, I tell myself that is where mu taxes go and I feel better. I have been a recipient too and I am grateful that I have a second lease in life enough to raise my kids to adulthood without losing our home and be neck-deep in debt.

Thank you BP for putting this out there. I think we forget how much c**p companies get away with and how they have brainwashed Americans to give them rights and welfare they don’t deserve. Shame on us for letting ignorance permeate through our democracy and foul the water with racists and fools who will, in the end, still be screwed over by the morons they elect.

My father is a veteran so his insurance is through the VA...worst healthcare on earth. My father is 81lbs and can't breath, his doctor told him to eat fast food. Also, his medications aren't free and he really can't afford them.

Stories like this and talking to my friends in America, I'm so glad I live in the U.K.! Yes the NHS is far from perfect, but I'm 30 and chronically ill and unable to work. I've spent 4.5 months of 2018 in hospital and have 4 medical appointments a week standard, sometimes more. I'm also on 17 medications. I haven't had to pay a penny. I used a website that translates U.K. medical costs to American costs etc and I would have no money and massive debts had I simply been born in a different country. The fact that a country like America still has this 'system' in place just confuses me.

It confuses me too, and it's entirely frustrating. I also have a chronic condition and I live in the States. I constantly have to battle my insurance to pay for procedures to prolong my life. Not to mention MRIs and CT scans I've had biannually since I was twelve (I am 31 now). They decide FOR me which procedures I do and don't need, which medications I do and don't need. I must've gone through five different insurance companies. I've even looked in other countries. I would only benefit from their socialized healthcare if I developed symptoms after I moved there or I married a citizen. That's how desperate it is.

As a Canadian, I have never had an issue with our high taxes, as they allow for ALL of us to have access to health care. I wouldn't want to live in a country where only the fortunate can be healthy. I feel sick just reading these stories.

1998 I was visiting the US (during my years living in Italy) and was pretty grouchy/not feeling great...on the flight home I couldn't stay warm, shivering all the way... the night I got back to my Italian home I woke up with hideous abdominal pain- could not stop screaming! My appendix was rupturing. I was rushed to the hospital, had surgery(which was complicated because I ended up with peritonitis ) and ended up staying there a little more than a week. 40+ stitches ( too much damage to clean up for the typical small incision) medicine, after care etc... my bill? Zero. If my appendix had ruptured ONE DAY EARLIER, I would have had no American insurance and an enormous bill which I would probably still be paying off today.

PS- the Italian hospital was definitely a "unique experience " - nothing but 6 bed wards and a couple communal bathrooms down the hall- but clean (and historic too- it was where DaVinci did his anatomy studies)

Sigh..... I recently got sent to collections after my broken finger cost me just over $400 out of pocket for 2 xrays and a cast.... Then got a bill for $1,120 in the mail a month after the cast came off.... That is with health insurance. I should have just given them a fake name and address and cut the cast off myself 6 weeks later. Of course I have c**p health care due to a c**p job so I have to pay more out of pocket, makes total sense right?

There is a solution for this, an all kind of other sick and non-humane systems: it is strike. Global strike. People on the streets with their families, fighting with peaceful disobedience. But as long as there is thinking like: it is not my business, it will not happen to me, as long as people is divided about anything, as long there are stories of some white cop kills black guy, stories how Russia is involved in this or that, the system will suck out every single drop from you, and it will be too late when you realize that. People must be united, in good and in bad. United you have in your country name.

Somethings got to give in the US and its health care, I know so many people who really do need medical care and can't afford to go or even have it. Nothings worked so far and it is a crisis in this country. I can't even afford Asthma inhalers, instead I have to get other meds and make do with this. I'm considered one of the lucky ones with "great" insurance, still I can't get the care nor medicines I need . "Why is the insurance scheme called COBRA?" - COBRA stands for Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, which makes it law that your coverage cannot be immediately canceled. Once your employer fires you, they still have to offer you insurance under COBRA at least for a period of time. Considering they jack up the prices to absurd levels makes the acronym pretty fitting, though.

I watched my Dad slowly die from lung cancer. Yeah, he smoked and did farming work (pesticides) when he was young and worked in factories later in life. He had retired from the Navy, so he did have medical coverage. Even so, the charges were astounding! If he was not retired military, I'm sure he would have avoided treatment and died of the cancer faster. If this had happened to me, I would have died sooner. I have insurance through work, with limits. If I lose my job I'm toast.

I keep seeing these stories from the US and I am always shocked that a first world country with enough funds to cover everyone does not have a sensible system, but instead lets pharma companies and insureres exploit people beyond reason. I think it would now be very difficult for any US government willing to do it to implement a public healthcare system to remove these vultures from the system.

One huge irony is that Medicare for All would cost the entire country a whole lot less money than our current system. So why are politicians who gripe about the deficit not doing everything they can to get Medicare for All? The answer is "donors." The primary interest of most politicians is getting reelected. The answer to a lot of our ongoing problems is to get special interest money out of our elections.

Actually only a few weeks ago, my mom's friend's mother was suddenly sick during her visit to America. The hospital tried to kick them out a few times because just cause it wasn't clear about all the documents and health care- when she was literally dying. The hospital told her that there was stuff wrong with her insides but she had to just deal with the pain many times cuz they didn't want to deal with her. The whole time, my mom's friend was recording their conversations. The hospital told them that she should get a surgery done- which was apparently a weird choice at the time. After the surgery, she was hospitalized again. Then a few days later, she passed away...

I been reading on this page about the good things the Canadian health care is. But when I talk to people who are from Canada who had health problems many changed their insurance to US ones and ran to the US for treatment. Mostly because of the wait list would be so long a minor procedure would turn to a major one they may not survive, Now it may have changed since the last time I talked to one. But from what I remember the tax increase they paid was higher by far than what I was paying for my family. In fact The increase would have paid for another family's health care plus dental insurance.

I am American and have lived in the UK for 23 years. Even though I have full access to the NHS, because I am self employed, I decided to buy private health and life insurance. One of the benefits of this is that should I ever be diagnosed with cancer or other life threatening illness then my mortgage will be paid off, I don't have to worry about losing my home because I'm sick. As for the NHS, well, when I had appendicitis and emergency surgery and 3 days in the high dependency ward of the hospital, I didn't have to worry about anything but getting better. When I left that was it, no worrying about a bill in the mail. Just 'get well soon'! What a relief.

I never appreciated how luck I was when I was younger. Every job I had, had employer paid health insurance. Most also included family coverage, kids especially, at no out of pocket expense to me. Things started to change when Reagan was in office and I don't know why. The healthcare system has gotten worse and worse. Low pay, long hours, miserly benefits, outrageous costs.

Their healthcare system paid all my bills for my entire treatment including follow up semi annual tests, scan and medication. Taxes are much higher here but e erroneous is taken care of. The health care is bullsh*t. I went to an urgent care cause my tonsils were swollen and I wanted to make sure I didn't have strep and was given antibiotics. I was charged almost $300 for that!! Not even including the cost of the antibiotics and I have full benefits from my work. I'm scared of going to the doctor for actual issues I suffer from cause in the past they don't believe you or try and find the most expensive thing that it might be and charge you.

I think seniors should be taken care of in this country. That's not happening in the United States. However, I'm not sure we are getting the entire story here. It sounds like this person was working way past the point of taking Social Security. If you are on Social Security, Medicare pays for these treatments Why wasn't she on Medicare? He says they both worked for 30 years. So she was entitled to Social Security and medicare. I have many clients who go through extensive treatment and pay a few thousand dollars after medicare. Still a lot of money, but not life changing.

It hasn't much to do with the military or nasa. It has to do with big pharma buying off both sides of the political parties. Controlled both houses an still could not find politicians with spines to give a c**p. Yes taxes will go up but 37% of this country pays nothing that has to unfortunately change, everyone who works has to pay something into the fed income taxes and not get everything back.

The problem is government! Insurance and healthcare solutions are squashed by lobbyists, who kibitz with Washington, to guarantee that the market is controlled by a few underwriters. Big healthcare is in bed with Big Government. We can see that how state lines legally restrict solutions to within the state. If government stepped out of the way, and competition, the free market, and entrepreneurs had reign over delivering health care options, the premiums would decrease and the quality would increase. After all, if we don't satisfy our clients, we lose them. In big insurance, there is no incentive because there are just a few colluding players in the government-defended market. Government is NOT the solution!

The trouble is, people want it both ways. They demand universal healthcare, but refuse even the slightest increase in taxes, or offering financial assistance to those who aren't able to pay. You can't have it both ways.

found this on Wickipedia - what a colossal waste of money --- "The ensuing U.S. space efforts have cost an additional $196 billion for the shuttle and $50 billion for the space station. NASA's total inflation-adjusted costs have been more than $900 billion since its creation in 1958 through 2014 (more than $16 billion per year)" and they wont provide basic healthcare

I understand the appeal of one payer. But what happens when that one payer has the power to decide what gets treated and what doesn't? When I was employed my insurance was worthless, so I dropped it and got covered by my husband's. That was good until his employer wouldn't cover me if my employer offered insurance, even though it was nigh onto worthless. Our healthcare systems and payment methods leave much to be desired, yet I'm not convinced one payer is the way to fix the mess. Someone, please show me FACTS by giving links to reliable and factual resources.

I can't afford insurance at my job. It's $85 a week from my pay at the crappiest deductible. My husband has his through his work and I can't piggie back on it. Mine is high because I'm a woman age 49. The guys at work pay $75 or less. I have degenerative osteoarthritis and a disc between my c5-c6 is gone. I have bone spurs causing "Charlie horse" like spasms in my arms. My hands and fingers are completely numb. My right leg is on fire. My right foot is also numb. And I have fibromyalgia an asthma. I have bad vision. I need dental. Obama care raped my tax returns the last 3 years and will again this year. I thank trump for ending the taxation on people because we can't afford it. If I had my tax money I could have afforded some medicine. But I live week to week. I pay my own bills. I give my husband money every week "rent" $100 out of my pay for the house hold food an bills. I pay my car ins an taxes. My husband pays his. I am in constant pain. F**k USA ins comps!

There are so many holes in this narrative that I would bet money that it is fake. He is 71 he qualifies for Medicare and if he is poor he qualifies for Medicaid so he shouldn’t have to worry about paying for medicine. How old was his wife?

And I will stick to the Canadian one too. It is not necessarily free because we have astronomical taxes but when I see someone sick and getting treatment without going broke, I tell myself that is where mu taxes go and I feel better. I have been a recipient too and I am grateful that I have a second lease in life enough to raise my kids to adulthood without losing our home and be neck-deep in debt.

Government is NOT the solution!

found this on Wickipedia - what a colossal waste of money --- "The ensuing U.S. space efforts have cost an additional $196 billion for the shuttle and $50 billion for the space station.

Blame big pharma and the military. Then vote for people who will slash the military budget and force big pharmaceuticals out of the way.

"83% of Americans say that the high cost of medical treatments is what makes quality care unaffordable to the public"... not to them but to the public. Polls are heavily influenced by people with agendas like yours.

There are so many holes in this narrative that I would bet money that it is fake. He is 71 he qualifies for Medicare and if he is poor he qualifies for Medicaid so he shouldn’t have to worry about paying for medicine. How old was his wife?
