Why is this so hard for my fellow Americans to understand?

We in Canada don’t have astronomical taxes. We have higher taxes than the US, certainly, but they are manageable, and I am happy to pay them for a system like ours.

@The Cappy, you don't have to wait months if you need it faster. I can tell you honestly that I'd probably be dead now *twice over* if I lived in the US - and certainly broke despite my high-paying job. Life is fragile, and at any moment you too could suffer a blood clot in your lungs or a near-fatal reaction to a common drug. In the US, you might not check out the minor symptoms until too late. In the US, you would pay thousands of dollars for the machine that is used daily to keep you alive. In Canada, you go to the ER and they just do whatever tests they need to figure out what's happening, then go about fixing you. Your system is broken, and cannot be fixed while people still believe the lies that say it's not.

Nothing wrong with taxes when the money is spent and used for the benefit of the nation's citizens. Everything is wrong when your tax money is wasted on stupid and ill- concieved projects like looking for alien life - look after your own people

You should educate yourself. NASA has one of the lowest budgets out of any government branch and does a hell of a lot more than steer a robot around Mars. Microwave in your house? Thank NASA. Have you or someone you know ever received a CAT scan? Thank NASA. Thank them for your camera phone, baby formula, portable computers, and so much more. You not only assume NASA does nothing else but spend taxpayer money, but you also don't bother to realize that NASA's funding makes up 0.5% of the entire US budget - and, I'll add, was cut by $16 billion as compared to last year's budget. I'll wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment that the US should take care of its people - but stating NASA's supposed uselessness is ignorant and doesn't prove your point.

Don't be silly. NASA is not the one to blame, it has benefited so much to life on Earth, and you should be grateful for any and every space program. Why didn't you the money the USA is spending on military and wars?
