If you’ve heard the song “Strange Things Did Happen Here”, know that the lyrics can astonishingly be true, for day by day, the world is booming with strange things. But some things should have a limit on how bizarre they go, shouldn’t they?

Just like the original poster (OP) found it ridiculous when his 30-year-old sister claimed that she had fallen in love with an animated avatar and even wanted to marry him. And when he refused to attend the wedding, she cried and called him a monster for not accepting her “love”!

More info: Reddit

The poster has a 30-year-old sister, dubbed Jessica in the story, who fell in love with an animated character who, she felt, understood her better than anyone could

She wanted to actually marry this digital avatar that she controlled and wanted her brother to be his best man at the wedding

The poster found this ridiculous and offered to take her to counseling, but she got angry and called him a monster for not accepting her “love”

Even some of his family are pressuring him to attend the wedding and making him out to be a villain for making her cry and refusing to attend

Today, we dive into one of the most bizarre stories where Reddit user Throvavay754326 found out that his sister wanted to marry an animated avatar. The 30-year-old felt that this digital character that she controlled understood her better than anyone else and even made her feel more special than real people could.

If you are facepalming right now, just wait till you hear what happened next. So, OP found this ridiculous, obviously, and he straightaway refused to be the best man to the digital character and said he wasn’t going to attend the wedding. As he was worried about her delusional behavior, he offered to take her to counseling, but that just made her angry.

She called him a monster for not accepting her “love”. And while there were other people in the family who opposed the idea, he was the only one being portrayed as a villain. It was because she was crying incessantly and telling people that he was an awful brother

Due to the fit she threw, the family started pressuring OP to attend the wedding, just to “keep the peace”. But he outright refused as he thought it was a farce and he really wanted to help his sister out of it. Probably feeling frustrated about the whole situation, he vented on Reddit and asked people for advice.

They all sided with him and called out the family who was further enabling the delusions of the sister when they should all encourage her to get professional help. They felt it was clear that she was suffering from some sort of condition and helping her overcome it would be better than feeding fuel to her irrational fantasies.

Bored Panda reached out to the original poster and asked him about any developments in the story. He mentioned that his sister is still set on going through with the wedding, and things were getting more tense rather than being resolved.

We also interviewed Abhishek Bhave, psychologist and co-founder at The Secret Ingredient. He believed that various psychological factors led to such a form of attachment. He explained that it might arise out of loneliness or unfulfilled past relationships, as in this digital relationship, the individual might feel a sense of belonging or acceptance.

“In the virtual world, an individual may have more control over the characters which may feel less anxious. For individuals who may struggle with real-life relationships, virtual relationships may feel more manageable,” added Abhishek.

People who pointed out the enabling behavior of the family were concerned that it might worsen the sister’s mental health. Abhishek also stressed that the individual might eventually start prioritizing virtual relationships more than real relationships.

He said that difficulty forming and maintaining real-life relationships, loneliness, and persistent low mood might be some effects that may be observed, and in some extreme cases, an individual may start feeling detached or completely alienated from the real world. This just proves that the Redditors’ fears seem justified.

When we asked OP about the challenging aspects of the situation, he expressed, “It has been difficult to manage my frustration while also seeing Jessica upset. I want to support her, but it’s tough to watch someone I care about make decisions I believe are harmful. Balancing my conviction with compassion has been really challenging.”

Despite the fix he was caught in, he hoped this situation would encourage a more open dialogue about unconventional relationships, whether in the real world or digital space. We also asked our expert about how family and friends should approach someone who is deeply attached to a virtual entity without alienating them or causing further emotional distress.

He advised that helping the individual get access to mental health care services would be the most crucial step. “Continued support from family and friends is highly necessary to help the individual feel cared for and loved. It is important to interact with them in an empathetic and nonjudgmental way,” he added.

Consulting an expert always provides helpful insights for any situation. Wouldn’t you agree? Also, now that you are aware of the whole scenario, feel free to jot down your thoughts in the comments below!

You would think this is fake, but the same thing happened with the sister of a friend of mine. This sister sent out invitations, decorated her house, actually she stopped short of going to a registry office or church. Maybe this particular post is fake, but these people, who confuse pixels with real humans, do exist.

There is a woman who married a gigantic pillow doll. She takes him with her to vacations, they even have pillow babies, gender reveal and she's divorcing him because the pillow doll cheated on her.... I don't get how people are so unaware of how insane the world has become, that think stuff like this is fake https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-12168293/amp/Woman-married-rag-doll-claims-hes-cheated-AGAIN.html

Ok in all seriousness though. There are games that allow players to marry each other virtually (obv not for reals) to get nice stuff in game. Final fantasy 14 is one of them

You can also get hitched (kinda) in World of Warcraft. I became the partner of a lad who was going through cancer treatments and really enjoyed it. Made him happy, and I had fun. But this is more serious and she needs help

Even if it's fake, we are nearly to a point where this will come up. You don't have to support the relationship, you should encourage her to get help, but in the end it's her choice, and there's nothing you can do. Better to be in a strange self directed relationship than in an abusive one with an AH. All family can do, as with any bad relationship, is keep communication open and hopefully help her leave the relationship when she's ready. Doesn't mean you have to celebrate it though. Surprised they aren't eloping.

I know of a woman who has never wanted kids and since she was about 30yo she gave up on real life men. Instead she is "dating" some anime characters.... somehow. I don't understand how it all works. Lol. But if she ever arranged for a marriage between her and one of those characters, I think I would go to the wedding just for the weird fun it'd be. She has been serious since forever about not having kids anyway and her giving up on real life men just was a big relief because she'd no longer drag weirdos she was dating to any social gatherings. It is weird to me not to want to be with any real life person.... but as long as it doesn't really hurt anybody -and as long as the woman/man/whatever has been serious about this for years as my friend has- then I don't see a problem with it. It's just weird. Not dangerous or bad.

My husband and I met online. We had characters that we roleplayed with, and yes, we did have a "wedding" between the characters. But in no way did we advertise this to our real life families and friends! It was part of the "play." We had special avatars and the people in the chatroom were made aware so their characters could "attend" or even be part of the wedding. It was fun...as part of the PLAY. It really sounds like his sister is letting her escapism get way too out of control. If the guy on the other end of things is a creep IRL (and most of the time, this turns out to be true), she's going to have a lot of regrets.

I find him not listing the game incredibly suspicious.. also a "gaming app" is he a 28 y/o full on boomer? Plus the entire structure of the story, and the cliche "keep the peace" "crying for weeks" every single sentence screams fake. But. Even if its somehow real. Who TF cares what she marries? Yeah hard YTA for his behavior and attention seeking. This doesn't impact his life 1% so stfu.

Op seems to not be up on how online games work which means it's not clear if she's "marrying" an NPC or another player. If it's another player then it could be relatively harmless or it could be a long-game catfish, so it should be looked into, but the responses shouldn't be derisive as his have been because the best way to get someone to dig their heels in is to tell them they're being stupid. If it's marrying an NPC then the appropriate response is counseling, not catering to it. "You do you" is legit, but only to a certain point after which you doing you is hurting you.

It would be cute, strange, but cute if it was a done tounge in cheek party. I’d go to something like that, knowing it was a joke and kind of fun. But the fact she’s calling him a monster and been crying for weeks shows she really needs mental help because she really thinks a game avatar is her soul mate. 😬

I could see if she was doing it as a fun/quirky thing, but the fact she's taking it seriously is alarming, to say the least. Your approach shows her that you love her and are looking out for her well being, but her refusal to accept your help (counseling) is a real head scratcher. Maybe everyone involved should refuse the situation like you, instead of enabling her and her delusion. This would be hilarious if it wasn't so real!

I liked the idea of the sister generating a virtual brother avatar and have him at the wedding instead the real one. I have nothing about a nice, anxiolitic fantasy. Yet, taking delusions as real and demanding that others do the same for her is stepping into the realm of mental ilness.

Wow! I knew we lived in a desperate world but I didn't know it was that desperate. If real, OP should buy a present from a local purchased in-person store for the "fiancé" (wrap it too), go looking for the guy around his sister's place so only he can open it & not the sister. If she push back on this to open herself then ask well why can't he open it himself? Her answer will be quite obvious I'm sure & clearly let her know if she now see how ridiculous this is. Apparently he "understands you better than anyone could", how would he understand receiving a present that he cannot open? Also if there was a severe computer crash that caused your "fiance" to be wiped would you build another one?

The ONLY time you have to feed into someone's delusion (make believe) is when a 2 year old hands you their toy phone or a 5 year old hands you a cup of "tea" (water). You answer that phone and drink that tea, make sure you know where they got the water from. You don't have to feed an adults delusion.

I'd be too curious not to attend. I'd try to coax her to therapy but I'm not a psychologist. I can't help by just getting her upset and angry with me

Future. There are AI characters and robots already, why not virtual Avatar. Too bad, I am too old to see and experience the "feels like ridiculous" things, but you will never know. What would people, from way back when, have thought of the techical developments of today?

The ONLY time you have to feed into someone's delusion (make believe) is when a 2 year old hands you their toy phone or a 5 year old hands you a cup of "tea" (water). You answer that phone and drink that tea, make sure you know where they got the water from. You don't have to feed an adults delusion.

This has to be fake. But also poorly written. What game even is this? I ask, because a lot of these games actually do have people on the other end playing the part. Which would just add another layer.

It's bad enough when redditors fall for fake posts like this, but when it gets reposted? You're giving stupid people too much attention to get clicks. It's dragging this site down. You used to celebrate artists, animals, and humor. Now it's AI c**p, celebrity c**p, and shopping c**p.
