As you pack your bags for your upcoming holiday, the last thing you expect is your luggage to be delayed, mishandled, or lost. After all, nothing turns a trip sour faster than facing troubles from the start while you're still standing at the baggage carousel. But let me tell you, the only thing worse than a delayed piece of luggage is a damaged one. And no, not a little worse for the wear, we mean completely destroyed.
Although airlines are getting much better at making sure passengers' belongings are safe and sound, an unfortunate fact is that dozens, if not hundreds, of bags are being ruined every day. So our team at Bored Panda has taken up the task to scour the internet and collect the most shocking and frustrating pictures people have ever shared online.
From broken suitcases to shattered laptops and clothes ripped into thousand miniature pieces, we've gathered a collection of examples you wouldn't wish on even the most annoying traveler. So continue scrolling to check them all out, and remember to upvote the most unexpected ones. Then be sure to share your thoughts, as well as personal experiences, with us in the comments!

TSA Spilling His Mothers Ashes
This happened to my sister too but with the local police. She got pulled over, they wanted to search her car, dumped my dad's ashes thinking they were drugs (we all had a bit of his ashes in a small urn on a keychain before his ashes were spread as his wishes stated). Cops never told her. She realized it later when she got home & was absolutely inconsolable.
There was a story a few years back where they accused the man they pulled over of being in possession of narcotics. Handcuffed him and put him in the squad car. Cop dumps the vial out on the back of a squad car and test it. Comes back negative. Guy is losing his mind begging them to stop. Come to find out they were part of the ashes of his 3 year old daughter who passed away.
Load More Replies...I'm sorry this happened, but aren't you supposed to declare with the airline that you're transporting human ashes?
Some, but not all, airlines may require that you identify the container of ashes as such, and provide a death or cremation certificate. It is not a TSA requirement, although they must be in a container that can be scanned, such as wood or plastic, if in your carry on as they advise. Otherwise, they may refuse to allow you to carry them onboard. If in checked luggage, be sure they are in a tightly closed container, perhaps with an extra bag over them, and with identifying papers attached in case your bag is opened for inspection.
Load More Replies...So disrespectful. What did they think, you were snuggling drugs. This is pathetic.
I agree this is the most disrespectful thing I've ever heard of, but "snuggling drugs" made me smile.

Load More Replies...I thought baggage handling doesn't depend on the airline? They are employed by the airport, so you have better luck reaching out to them.
Some people would pay a fortune for those if there was a designer label on them.
Stealing Video Games From Someone's Luggage
This is why I refuse to put anything of value into the hold. If it can be put in the carry-on, that's where it is going. Sure, I had fun with all the extra screening I had to go through while carrying thousands of pounds worth of equipment on loan from the university, but precisely because of the value, I wasn't going to take any chances. (Imagine around 10 expensive electronic devices plus all their batteries, chargers and cables. 😆 Was a fun time explaining it to TSA)
I have a friend named sue, who likes to use the justice system to get companies like this justice, by use of the legal court system. she could help you get your games back, or at least money to replace them. call sue. she can help. SUE.
Jeez!!!! I grew up playing video games, If someone did that to me, I would get angry and cry. even at adult age.
Of course they did they did it to my kids too they ruined 3 laptops stole 3 ds and the games and they don’t get in trouble for it either. Airlines say well read the fine print we’re not responsible for electronics
If you’ve ever stood in shock near the baggage carousel because your suitcase was slowly coming towards you ripped open and looking like an overloaded sandwich, you’re in the right company. Baggage handling is a wild and tumbled world, after all. And while dents and scratches are a regular business that most passengers simply shrug off, these severe cases are something travelers’ nightmares are made of.
A brief scroll through this list makes it look like handing over checked suitcases is almost like taking a leap of faith. But remember that once they leave your sight at the airport, they start a journey of their own. Whether it’s passing through conveyor belts, dozens of baggage handlers’ hands, or taking a ride on different trolleys, many unexpected things happen until they finally get back to you.
My Uncle's Suitcase After His Flight
It was probably stuck and god shredded by conveyor belt
Load More Replies...I feel a bit better about mine. I had gotten back from training, had one day before I had to leave for training part 2. Informed that my luggage didn't make it to my connecting plane and would be delivered the next day at my home. With all my new work stuff that I needed in 24 hours. My only suitcase arrived with a broken zipper, broken handle and all 4 wheels shattered. At least my work stuff was still inside but i was less than impressed. I had overheard people in the aisle across mine make comments about a few suitcases falling out when they opened the doors. Apparently one was mine.
Laptop Run Over By An Airport Baggage Cart
This was fortunately not my laptop! Felt sorry for the poor guy though - his entire bag was run over and torn to shreds.
Yeah, I'm going to guess not even IT would ask if you've tried turning this off and back on again.
Always keep your laptop in your carry on. It's safer and you know exactly where it is all the time.
Never, ever, EVER put your luggage in checked baggage. I don't care if they say they don't have room that bag as carryon. If they want you to check it at the gate then you take that laptop out of the bag first.
Why people are so judgmental? Yes, they checked their laptop. Ideally you shouldn't. But why on earth would anyone this destruction is remotely acceptable?? Blaming the victim are we?
Airport Forklift Went Through Pelican Case And 2 Computers Inside
Worked at a fruit stand for a while as a "smart person", one day a fairly popular music group came in frantic cause they had a show that night. Ends up that they checked in the computers on the flight and when they got them the pelican case had a sizable crack in it. They opened the case to find the computer(pictured) "stabbed" and the one under it with a destroyed screen. Ends up the forklift the airport was using stabbed the case and destroyed the computers within. A co-worker spent a few hours moving hard drives (they had SSDs) and reinstalling the OS to have everything work on the new machines.
"No, but I smeared toothpaste on the screen, after consulting tiktok, and the computers are good as new." /s

I am so sorry to each and everyone of you who have this property damage and theft. You pay a lot for a seat and care should be included with that price. I don't understand the lack of care being taken when people know now days that folks have computer's and other electronic's in those bags. If they don't know they are in the bags then they should be extra careful. Something needs to be done.
Once again, never pack expensive electronics like this in checked luggage. Or, basically, never check anything you can't afford to have destroyed in checked luggage.
It's enough to give an already nervous traveler yet another reason to be filled with worry. But thankfully, in the majority of cases, your checked bag is going to arrive at its destination on time and in the condition received.
According to a 2019 Baggage IT report by SITA, the world's leading specialist in air transport communications and information technology, airlines have "damaged or pilfered" 18% out of 24.8 million bags that were reported as "mishandled," meaning delayed, lost/stolen, or ruined.
Air Italy Completely Destroyed My Bag
I guess it takes some talent to butcher a sturdy piece of luggage like that. I'm torn between angry abd impressed
Can we just take a moment to acknowledge that even in its state it still is holding its content…… 🤔what kind of bag is this?
Flew from Nice to Milan. My suitcase was open, clothes and shoes everywhere. I was 17 years old. But people I didn't know kept bringing my stuff back to me. I think I recovered everything. I was on a school trip, and my classmate had duct tape. Since our next two flights were heading home, we duct taped it from top to bottom. My guess is that they were checking the bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and wine I was bringing back, and didn't zip everything back properly. Oh, and this was in 2000.
I Feel Bad For The Suitcase Owner
'We've looked into your complaint sir, but we cannot fathom how the damage occurred.'
Are you sure it wasn't like that when you left home?

Managed to climb up onto the moving carousel in skirt and heels and grab my bag handle and drag it down enough so I could get down and then lift it off without breaking my neck. Middle aged woman at 2am in deserted arrivals area climbing on the equipment. No staff anywhere. They don't give a damn. Of course it was damaged too but still usable so I got off lightly.
If I say the suitcase will fit, the *stomp* suitcase *stomp* WILL *stomp* FIT!
This is too obvious. I bet the owner had their luggage damaged and decided to paint on a boot print. Kind of like those people who add Hulk fist prints into the dents on their cars, or the people who add backgrounds like Goku or something to match up with their broken phone screens.

Load More Replies...It is not possible to see things like that ! I am stunned. I hope all these people have obtained a good refund !
I swear these airports/airlines employ angry bears as baggage handlers.
What I don't understand is at that point why don't they just say they lost the bag because honestly this is somehow worse
seriously, when I saw these bags I wonder if the plane landed in one piece...
So who are the worst offenders? Well, Trifibre, a leading manufacturer of protective cases, found that some airlines are notoriously rougher on baggage than others.
After looking at the data from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which covers airlines serving the UK, it looks like one international airline soars above others. Out of 823 claims for damaged baggage submitted to airlines between 2015 and 2020, "108 claims of damaged baggage submitted to Ryanair — 13% of claims overall and more than double any other airline."
"Emirates came in second place, after receiving 47 claims for damaged luggage during the same period — 6% of claims overall — while Alitalia was third with 40 claims for damaged baggage — 5% of total claims," Trifibre revealed.

Load More Replies...Haha, at least while the 🪒 blade works well! Just in case: go to the airline office at your destination airport and get cash for the time until the delayed baggage arrives. All airlines should give out an amount of money for e.g. underwear and most important stuff. Depends on destination and time of baggage delay. If there's no airline office, there's an airport service which would help you instead and then charge the airline. (edited typo away)
Load More Replies...The most I've ever gotten for a lost bag is a blank stare by an employee who clearly didn't want to be there.
Its not a terrible gesture. I had my bag delayed by 18 hours between LAX and Vancouver. Figuring out basic grooming supplies was an issue. Always pack medicine, a spare set of underwear, socks, and a shirt in your carry on.
This Happened Last Year. They Told Us Our Suitcase Must Have Fallen Off The Transport Truck. Everything Inside Was Gone, Yet They Managed To Retrieve The Bag
Uhhhhh....and so it fell on the tarmac where the airline's employees are the only ones that have access? Maybe it was carried off by animals? Lots of pesky rabbits.

Load More Replies...This is on the baggage handlers. I've actually watched them at airports literally flinging the cases as hard as they can from place to place. They really don't care. I honestly believe that if their wages were docked $50 every time someone had a valid complaint about the state of their luggage, that they would probably pay a bit more attention. It's NOT the airlines - it's the baggage handlers at the airport!
I don't like this post. It stresses me. To see the lack of respect for these people, it is their work, they only have this one to do.
I will burn the claim desk to the ground! Oh my lanta, it's so effin unbelievable the state that bag is in 😡
While we can take precautions and only hope the inevitable doesn't happen, it’s best to arm ourselves with knowledge of what happens if your luggage is visibly damaged in flight. We consulted Terry Ward’s article for The Points Guy, where experts weigh in on how to handle these situations.
The number one thing you must do if you see your luggage broken, ripped, or otherwise damaged at the airport, is to report it immediately. But it’s best to make sure you’re aware of the condition your bag was in when you left it at the check-in desk. It’s even better if you have photos to prove it.

Load More Replies...Charles Leocha, a chairman of the travel advocacy group Travelers United, explained that things like a lost wheel, a tear in the fabric casing, and a broken zipper are all considered damage. "Take photos of the exterior and the interior and the items packed," Leocha said. "It gives you the proof that your bag was damaged or that something was pilfered or damaged."
Remember to also photograph any dents and bruises if you noticed them after retrieving your bag, you may need them to substantiate your claims. What’s more, airlines often require that baggage tags remain attached to your bags, so take a photo of them before you tear them off.
Heads Up Everyone, United Airlines Has Proven To Me Once Again Why They Are The Worst Airline
Multiple times this year this has happened. Lost my boards, broke my boards but said they couldn’t do anything because “the board bag wasn’t damaged”. Now we have Boards, Wetsuits, AND board bags damaged and wetsuits missing. I would like to get some money for this from United but countless times this year they have rejected my claims. At least my favorite board is in one place.
If this happened multiple times to you on the same airline, why do you keep flying with them? Fool me once, fool me twice....
Sometimes you just have no choice - you're a regular on a certain route and there are no other flights available.

This Luggage Left On The Airport Tarmac
Because it's obviously lonely, yet the real evil still lies in wait. Poor bag.
Load More Replies...Lol! So I work there.. that's my airline. Fallen bags get left near the lines and a worker called a "Sweeper" will come with their truck and pick it up, scan the tag and if there's time, it goes to the appropriate connection gate. If the flight left, it gets rebooked to the next available flight. On the bright side, it didn't get ran over. 😃
Seems all airlines have LOW standards for their luggage handling people - Best to ship stuff ahead when you can, and then do the rest as carry on.
This Is Just Sad
Douglas Kidd, executive director of the National Association of Airline Passengers, added that passengers should know their rights. "[They] can, and should, file a claim with the airlines for any damages to the bag(s) and their contents," Kidd said. "Be aware, however, that the airlines’ Contract of Carriage may severely limit the extent to which the airline will reimburse a passenger for such damage."
Kidd pointed out that it’s easiest to report the incident at the airport in person, as you have everything documented on-site instead of uploading claim documents online. "Plus, you might be offered a replacement bag on the spot if you're not picky about a new bag."
Keep in mind that how things are handled is going to depend on the airline. Moreover, they may have varying windows of time after your flight when your claim for luggage damage will be considered, so if you notice something after you’ve left the airport, act right away.

Load More Replies...I wasn't aware that we are supposed to carry around every receipt of every article that we've ever purchased, JUST in case we pack it in a bag and an airline decides to destroy it. I mean - really?
To demonstrate the cost of the bag and and damaged contents so they can compensate. That is pretty much how the claims work, it sounds like this was surprising somehow?
This is not really surprising. Still, I take the basics on a trip. Toiletries, clothes, shoes, underwear, etc. Nothing I bring (or own for that matter) is new. I certainly don't worry about anything being stolen but if my items are completely ruined or lost do the airlines have a minimum compensation for this? I don't have receipts from 2, 3 and sometimes more, years ago. I wouldn't be able to afford to replace all those things. My luggage was given to me when a relative died. Overall, my things cost less than the price of the flight.
Load More Replies...I am so glad for Brazilian consumer legislation. The burden of proof is inverted. They would need to prove my claim is incorrect. The nerve of the airline!!
When it comes to compensation, it’s for the airline to decide how much, if at all, you’ll get for the inconvenience. Kidd explained that normal wear and tear is not likely to be covered, but you can try to reach out to your bag’s manufacturer directly.
Incidents like this one are sure to make your trip sour, but Kid advised that it’s best to remain calm and collected when communicating with the staff. "A banged-up bag is a bad way to begin or end a trip," Kidd said, "but blasting the baggage claim representative for a missing wheel or hole in your bag isn't going to help your claim or get it resolved more quickly."

American Airlines Leaving My Bags Out In The Rain
Where would you like them to leave them? They have to get loaded outside.
***airline left suitcases in the rain... and i don't think i can take it, 'cause it took so long to pack it... and i'll never have dry clooothes again, oh nooOOOooo!***
Sad to say but you should be prepared for this. It's sad when it happens, but sometimes it rains when they are packing the bags. And sometimes the bags need to wait for the plane to get ready, or other situations. But a bag should handle rain with no problem, even if it stands there in a few hours. Also another reason why there exists plastic/metal bags. To protect a little better towards the weather and potential scratches. Regarding the inside of the bag, you should be prepared for it and pack accordingly to protect items that can't get wet, get scratches etc by putting them in proper protection. And it's not something you do because you are obsessive and extreme - they actually recommend you to do this, if you paid attention to all the messages regarding packing they have. And general looking at their packing recommendations on sites for the airline etc. Altho most of the other posts on this article seems more valid as the entire bag is destroyed, which sadly can't always be prevented. Came From An 8-Hour Flight Just To Find That The People Of The Airport Broke Into My Luggage
This is neither illegal nor uncommon. It's why you should lock your luggage only with a TSA lock.
Most airports state NOT to lock your luggage these days, in case TSA needs to inspect it. They'll simply cut the lock off if it's there. (and knowing their mindset, they'll deliberately choose locked luggage to inspect, just because...)
most airlines advise not to lock luggage, as security and customs will break the locks for inspections. I use twist ties or ribbons.

It’s not just suitcases - in the USA an average of about 30 wheelchairs a day are lost or damaged by airlines. That’s 30 people every day who arrive at their location to find that their mobility has been seriously limited on arrival (it’s often compared to arriving and finding out your legs have been broken), and faced with weeks to months of waiting for their chairs to be properly repaired. Airports need to do so much better! https://www.businessinsider.com/disability-us-airlines-damage-thousands-of-wheelchairs-a-year-2021-10
I travel a lot. These are the rules I follow. If its important or expensive it never leaves your sight. Laptops, dead mom's ashes, one-of-a-kind comics that stuff is carried on. On most US carriers when you carry on you get a small suitcase as a carry on and smaller item the size of small backpack or a briefcase. If you flying in or out of a smaller airport your plane will likely be a smaller Embraer or Bombadier airplane used by regional airlines and have limited overhead space. They may force you to check your carry on. Transfer that laptop, mom's ashes, and your expensive comics to the smaller bag, that is going to be put under the seat in front of you. Always keep your meds and a spare set of underwear in that hand bag. Losing clothes is a pain in the butt, losing your work computer or very important personal stuff is devastating. I'm sorry these folks suffered through this.
Good rules! But see Emiloy's comment above. Apparently a lot of wheelchairs get damaged by airlines every year. A wheelchair is something you can't carry on with you, and then you're screwed when you get to your destination.
Load More Replies...This is ridiculous. It is horrible how the airlines don't even care about their passenger's personal belongings. Completely decimated suitcases, shredded clothes, even stolen video games! I really hope all of them ended in a lawsuit. A very expensive one.
Here's mine. For a band trip all the instruments were being stored underneath the plane. You could see the workers loading the instruments literally THROWING the tubas. Pretty much all the instruments were completely destroyed beyond repair. Even stupider, the school district said our band directors would be fired if they tried to file a lawsuit, so the directors would have to pay over $100,000 to replace everything.
Holey c**p...I had never heard of such B.S...If I had to travel with my instrument and saw someone throw it, I would be coming off that plane and looking to throw some baggage handlers around. And the school district made your band director pay for the damage? Because they were too afraid to stand up to the airlines? Band director got hosed. I would have quit and dared them to tey and get money from me.
Load More Replies...Not a destroyed bag, but my favorite flight story started at JFK Airport in New York. I am checking in my bags for a two week camping trip in Northern Thailand. This includes all my gear. I had a layover in Singapore, and the dude at the desk says he's checking my bags to Singapore. I say "no, I'm going to Thailand". He argues that he knows what he's doing, the bags will be at Singapore for me to re-check there. So no bags at Singapore, or when I get to Thailand. Turns out my bags are in Hawaii. No problem, says the airline. We'll just send them to your hotel in three days when they arrive. I don't have a hotel, I've got a train booked to Chiang Mai tonight, for a bus to Chiang Rai the next morning. I'm sleeping on the train. Spent a day running around Bangkok trying to buy camping gear, bug spray, etc. Skipped trying to buy clothes, just had what was in my overnight bag. Spent two weeks washing my clothes every night in the Mekong River. I smelled ripe at the end of that trip. Fun tho
Here's what I do when I need to fly. I have old suitcases and don't buy them new. I always put anything that can spill and create a mess in ziplock bags. Anything valuable goes into my bag I have with me or I won't bring it. I always take a picture of my suitcases and the contents before I leave for the airport. When damaged and they ask for receipts, it's to assess value and it's okay if you have screenshots of your item on a store website if you don't have receipts.
My well-traveled brother only brings a backpack when he flies, stayed with me for a week with what he had in there, although I did do a small load of laundry halfway through his stay for him. He likes to ship things to his destination rather than take them on the plane, so he simply collects a box or two from UPS or at his hotel. He has also purchased a used suitcase for a few dollars from Goodwill, etc. when he needs one quickly while on a trip for extras he has picked up but has been unable to ship. Traveled all over the country for his work for many years.

Some belongings are too big for carry on. But a laptop, no way.
Load More Replies...It makes me wonder how they managed to do so much damage to the cases.
