Woman Shows How “Harry Potter” Characters Were Supposed To Look According To Book Descriptions (35 Pics)
Interview With ArtistWhen comparing books and their movie adaptations, books almost always prove to be better. One of the reasons is that a film does not always manage to convey the same imagery as a book in which emotions are blended with visuals. When reading, one can form a completely different image of a place or a character and have entirely another general feeling of a story.
When creating a film adaptation, the cast is usually chosen according to the characteristics described in a book. However, the looks are not always so precise. With that in mind, one Vietnamese woman (to her followers known as MsBananaAnna) decided to use artificial intelligence to see what Harry Potter characters would look like based on book descriptions.

Sirius Black
Bored Panda got in touch with the author of this idea to learn more about her and this project. The woman revealed that she's a 28-year-old "nerd" living in Melbourne. She has been a huge "Potterhead" since grade school. "I basically grew up with Harry, Ron, and Hermoine and remember waiting in line at midnight for the release of each book."
Fleur Delacour
Nymphadora Tonks
"I came up with the idea to recreate the characters when I tried to find some fanworks of Hermione. I watched the movies and though I like Emma Watson, I always thought she was too gorgeous to be Hermione. I couldn't find any renditions of her that I thought were accurate so I ended up making her myself. People seemed to enjoy it so much that I decided to make more characters."
Severus Snape
Tom Riddle
While some characters look similar to the ones one sees in the movies, others look nothing like them. For MsBananaAnna, Sirius was the one she personally liked the most. "I thought that was plucked straight from my head. Artbreeder can be pretty limiting in what you can do and can be a bit twiddly so not all of the characters came out as I wanted, but I thought Sirius came out as I imagined him! Dark and regally handsome."
Lily Potter
Narcissa Malfoy
The recreations of Harry Potter characters got a lot of attention on Reddit (here and here) where MsBananaAnna (or, as she calls herself on Reddit, lettuceown) posted them.
What looks are your favorites? Leave a comment and let us know!
Argus Filch
Ginevra Weasley
Not too bad, I don’t think she was casted well in the movies anyways.
Cho Chang
Her name though. 🤦♀️ When every other girl has a nice / interesting / exotic name the only Asian girl has the worst most stereotypical name going.
Charlie Weasley
Still upset there was not more of him. He works with dragons! Dragons!! He looks handsome in this recreation, too.
Lucius Malfoy
Hermione Granger
Remus Lupin
Harry Potter
Luna Lovegood
Draco Malfoy
Neville Longbottom
Fred And George Weasley
Lord Voldemort
James Potter
Ronald Weasley
those eyes are boring into my soul please stop smiling like that ron!
Bellatrix Lestrange
Vernon Dursley
Cedric Diggory
I prefer Robert Pattinson, this guy looks like an improved version of me!
Eyebrows too low. Cedric is a cheerful character, his eyes should not be shaded in this vaguely menacing manner.
Master Skywalker, there are too many of them , what are we going to do?
He is the only character so far that does not look tired with baggy eyes.
Did the books specify hair color? The movies went blonde, but I don't remember his physical description, just the character description
I don’t remember the books specifying a color but his hair wasn’t blonde in the movies( I think that’s what you’re saying but I wasn’t sure so sorry if it’s not)
Load More Replies...Dudley Dursley
Petunia Dursley
Dolores Umbridge
Peter Pettigrew
Merope Riddle (Voldemort's Mother)
Why did the AI make wall-eyed? Was that described in the book? Book 6 isn't my fave so I've not read it enough to remember.((people have already pointed out the description that I wasn't recalling. Kinda don't need multiple comments restating the same thing))
Bill Weasley
Longer hair. Earring with a fang. More cool, less dorky. Probably got confused with Percy.
Minerva Mcgonagall
No, sorry, but even before seeing Maggie Smith in that role she was the spitting image for my personal McGonagall.
Pansy Parkinson
Gilderoy Lockhart
Viktor Krum
Seriously where are everyones cheeks?! No one is fed in the books apparently. Chiseled jawlines and sunken cheeks.
Read my mind! I was thinking that the Hogwarts cafeteria must be short staffed.
Load More Replies...So no Dumbledore, Molly, Arthur, or Percy, but we get Voldemort’s mom??
So we put Voldemort mom but not, the man with the half moon spectacles
Nice try, but I don't buy it. Not all sisters look alike, but Lily and Petunia have nothing in common. And Harry is supposed to have his mothers eyes.
All of the faces seem to have been "crafted" from 3 molds. Standard male, standard female and wide.
Load More Replies...Most of them look too young, and they mostly seem built on the same two or three basic face shapes.
I really wish these were not described as being created by A.I, because artificial intelligence is not what created these. They're not much more than an identikit from a selection of features, and put together by a simple algorithm. That's why most of them look very similar.
I thought the movie casting was very well done. And don't nobody do crazy like Helena Bonham Carter!
Everyone's eyes are either too big or have an unnatural colour. Or both.
most of these are too thin or too chunky to be believable as the characters. and, it seems AI has a thing for narrow/pointy chins. but, a couple of them were pretty good.
Everyone had a sharp chin? So no one in that whole universe was square jawed?
How do any of these make the story any better? You couldn't get actors that look like this so the ones we know already fit better.
That quickly got boring, unfortunately. Also, it seems that the AI used to make the faces has a block on anything that would make the characters truly ugly and it seems that the artist read the books quite a long time ago and not as often or as well as they watched the films (Voldemort without the red eyes ? Brown haired V. Dursley ?)
i dont know i am not much impressed. voldy is missing red eyes, wormtail looks like a mutant. some of these are just a fantasy of the author or they are just adjusted versions of the film
Judging by the striking resemblance between these renditions and the actors, I suppose the AI was queried with charecter names and not only descriptions, so it rendered what it's learned about these characters from its source dataset imagery.
You're talking about Karkaroff, the durmstrang Head master

Waste of time. Her AI images are no more "authoritative" than every reader's imagination or the way the characters were cast for the movies.
Waste of time. Her visions of what her AI is programmed to think they look like any more than every person who read the books imagination or the movie casting.
I think MANY in the wizarding world aren’t living the high life. And a LOT of characters are described as gaunt or gnarled, which doesn’t lend to plump cheeks. The Vernon and Dudley are spot on though! Mrs, Weasley, we’re she featured, would have been plump. She described MANY times as being rounder and formidable. Haha
Hey! I know... Hows about we run photos of the actors through five filters and call it a day, huh?
It rather look like “morons” Thanks to the director 🤠 for choosing the best cast , To make the potter charcters fiil the bill of this roles
Some of them look the same as the movie (similar enough) and chances are some of the actors were cast for their tallent as opposed to looking exactly like the characters. I know that Dan Radcliff had an alergic reaction, which is why they didn't use contacts. Though, I did wonder why they didn't just chance his eye colour in post production. p.s.I think these are AI created images, which is why Tonk's 'shaved head' look look like a comb back style
The movies messed up hermione as the main one I remember. She was supposed to be pretty much average, not too pretty, not too ugly. They went to the top end of the scale on some and only a few characters look how they should
Regardless how they actually looked, we grew up with them, the existing cast
You do understand that you're NOT an artist if the art is by an AI - right?
Unless the AI output was post-edited in Photoshop, I 100 percent agree with you. Programs like Art Breeder make it extremely easy to generate portraits like this based on descriptions and keywords the user provides.
Load More Replies...Impressed! The painter did not set out to make juvenile 'collectors cards ' of every character. She chose an interesting selection and her skill is remarkable, whether we agree of not with the interpretation.
I'd say the movies did an exceptional job casting actors, applying makeup to be consistent with the book descriptions of the characters.
I'd say the movies did justice to the book descriptions of the characters.... quite impressed.
Most of these are pretty dam horrible looking so I. Glad they went the route they did
they were pretty good! they weren't exactly what i was thinking because they all do look like they need some McDonalds or Whataburger, but i do love the outcome! :)
Some of the people chosen to play the characters were pretty good picks if you just deprive them of bread for a month it would be spot on
They all look way too young, and emaciated. I'm fine with how the movie portrayed them all!
Meh. The only one that is clearly more accurate than the movie casting is Hermione, who is supposed to have buck teeth and be a little homely, but they accidentally cast a girl who grew up to be one of the most beautiful women of all time. In the books, it is Ginny who is stunningly beautiful, so I guess this artist improved on that one slightly, but still didn't get there. The artist needs to study true redheads to learn how freckles are really distributed.

This is just absurd and dumb, these characters still look like they come out of a water damaged comic strip.
These are pretty close to what I saw in my head in 5th grade. It's like the artist is living inside my mind o.o
You could poke someone’s eye out with most of the chins in these drawings. Why does almost everyone have the same jawline?
Fleur, Cho, and Luna were the only ones who looked like their real characters. The others, not so much. Sorry.
Some of these were so bad they were ridiculous. She wasted her time. I read the books too and when I saw the first movie I was blown away by how closely all the actors fit their parts.
like on Halloween or the Wizard of OZ they r all the same thing thin faced
I wish they did a side by side of the character rendering and the casted actor.
None of these look like what my mind pictured when I read the books. And yes I read them long before I ever saw the movies. These are completely unrealistic and what's with the weird eyes and malnourished look? Just weird
A bit weird this....but the movies largely nailed it? Also did I miss a book that has detailed character descriptions?
The reason mad eye moody isn't on here is because it's embarrassing how bad a job they did
She should have add all of the other characters. Hagrid, Dumbledore, Trelawny, etc.
According to the book descriptions? No, according to this artist's interpretations. Some of them are pretty good. Some, not so much
This wasn’t done by an artist—this was done by artificial intelligence.
Load More Replies...Most of these were just like the movies .. the rest weren't too disappointing ... if I was disappointed, it would have been with the change in storylines, but not with descriptions of characters ...
This was done by an artificial intelligence art generator- so not a lot of hard work involved unless they were post-edited in Photoshop. You can easily create results like this using AI programs like Art Breeder. You give the AI a number of features or descriptions and the AI will comb its databank of images to generate a portrait based on the feedback. This databank often includes portraits of famous celebrities hence why many people say that some of these characters look like celebrities. The portraits may be edited in Photoshop later. Since these are done by AI, the portraits often look what many people call “uncanny valley, meaning that they look human enough but there’s a feature like the nose or eye colour that looks too perfect or unnatural. It’s really fascinating.
Load More Replies...Despite everyone's criticism I'd say the producers did a fairly good job of finding people to look like the books. AND this is just ONE person's idea of how they should look according to descriptions in the book.
This was done by artificial intelligence as mentioned at the start of the thread-so, AI is the one to be “congratulated”
Load More Replies...I liked almost all of them (Gilderoy is too handsome, and he should have a weak chin). I don't understand why everyone is critical.
All y'all are rude, for every complement there 25 people complaining about something rather than enjoying the art this person created for us to enjoy and discuss. Yeah everyone expects a few naysayers and hecklers but most of you people are just down right aweful. Try being nice and maybe spend as much time and energy this project took into something this creative even one time in your life. Whoever the artist is, major props, yeah a few main people are missing but I'm sure you have your reason and I give props for the mad effort this must have taken.
these images were made by a computer algorithm. almost no effort was put into this at all besides selecting which features the ai should focus on then picking the best image to post. no time, energy, or creativity like you're saying.

This is age shaming, the older characters are too young in this...... It's like Sirius should be older.... Harry's parents were at least middle 20 when he was born and after that 11 years so it's fine to Severus, Sirius, Remus, Petigeew the Weasley family be almost in their 40's
I think what you write is influenced a lot by how you grew up where you live, etc. I dont know how exactly it is in Britain, for sure there are different races of people , but I would say the white race is probably stll prevalent? maybe at least at some parts and I would say even more in the 90s when she started writing the series. I dont think it was intentional. if she didnt interact much with ppl from different races she would not think about adding them to the story. Still there are a few examples of ppl from different races: Dean Thomas, the Patil twins, Cho Chang, Kingsley, then she mentions some ppl at the ministry. She later realised this under-representation and she started adding more ppl from different backgrounds. I tell you in my country you could live all your life and never meet a black person. If I wrote a story where I wanted to add a black person it would be based just on what I saw in TV, not my personal experience and I could add some stereotypes unintentionaly
