Woman Doesn’t Want To Be Near Screaming Kids, Proposes An Idea For Child-Free Neighborhoods

It’s no big secret that every human is entitled to hold their own opinions, even if they’re highly controversial.

One of the topics that constantly seems to be making the internet rounds is children – specifically, people calling on businesses to stop bending over backward for parents and to start offering a bunch of random services, such as flights, pools, cinema screenings, amusement parks, high-end restaurants, etc., as child-free ones.

Well, the star of today’s article is no exception. Kitch Catterall, who goes by the name Baby Soja online, recently took to TikTok to propose the development of adult-only neighborhoods.

The Melbourne woman recorded a video of herself at the gym’s parking lot, venting about “screaming” children as she finally reached her boiling point. Many netizens sided with the idea – however, some didn’t quite agree with it.

“I know I’m evil, but they’re SO loud. Please, I want peace and quiet. Are there adults-only pools in Melbourne??” – an Aussie influencer, Kitch Catterall, took to TikTok to “officially” (and perhaps controversially) call for child-free neighborhoods. The video gained over 262K views and 27K likes, and a heated debate ensued in the comments section.

“I would like to know when somebody is planning on opening an adult-only suburb where everything in it is only for adults?” the woman said rhetorically at the beginning of her video. Kitch revealed that she is sick and tired of having to tolerate screaming kids wherever she goes. The TikToker shared that when she went for a swim, she noticed that the little ones practically overtook the lap pool despite having their own one. She argued that “evil,” children-hating people like her should have their own suburb where they can be undisturbed.

Kitch Catterall, also known as Baby Soja, proposes creating suburbs with strict “no-kids” policies as she’s “sick” of dealing with noisy children

As we all know, the internet can be a nasty place, and even if you’re just expressing your personal viewpoint and doing no harm to anyone, people will still criticize you. Kitch received a fair amount of backlash and even had to specify that she was “not bagging on families existing, just sometimes want a quiet break” to a mum who happened to side with her proposal.

One commenter sent the TikToker straight to Antarctica, presumably to finally get away from the noisy children; another one said that the ultimate child-free place is already a thing and is called a retirement village. The point is, it seems like a lot of people are quick to label you as this wicked villain for wanting to live a life free of having to encounter screaming and tantrum-throwing kids, but is it really such a bad idea?

The now-viral video sparked a heated debate amongst fellow TikTok users

The woman made a follow-up video where she further explained her position. “So many people [are] pressed in the comments. Like, sorry that some people don’t want to be around kids 24/7. I’m not saying kids shouldn’t be allowed at the pool, it’d just be nice if there were more places that were JUST for adults to enjoy, and that includes parents wanting a break from their kids too. Chill.”

Wanting an occasional break, especially if you yourself are child-free, is not criminal. Perhaps it was the delivery that incited all the hate, or maybe the internet is just not a friendly place – whatever it is, we can all agree that a kid-free pool is a heavenly idea. Always.

What do you think about this?

You can watch the video here:

@soybabie__ I know im evil but theyre SO loud please i want peace and quiet are there adults only pools in melbourne?? #fyp #kidfree #childfree ♬ original sound – Baby Soja

And while some people supported the woman’s suggestion, others thought her position was quite controversial

I don't have a problem with her wish (to each her own), but how is she so optimistic that adults would be better behaved? Drunk adults are louder than kids.

Not all of them. My two favorite bars are pretty quiet places. I run a daycare during the day - the daycare is MUCH MUCH louder.

It would be nice to have one of those, wouldn't it? Problem is, child-free singles get together, hook up, and, nine months later, here comes baby! Suddenly, it's no longer a "child-free" neighborhood, so what, do the couple (or at least the woman) get banished by the community for having a child? (Sounds like a premise for an M. Night Shyamalan movie!) Js...

The problem is a lack of child spaces. Not spaces where your kids are allowed, places optimised FOR children. When I was a kid, there were three or four play places on the local high street that were free to use, very cheap, or in stores/cafes and were free with purchase. Also, a lot of places like banks and cafes had a small area with toys (like the bead tracks, or legos) for kids to entertain themselves whilst their parents did boring adult stuff. These give the kids an opportunity to let off steam, and thus they're less screamy and annoying. Nowadays, these things are all gone because they don't make lots of profit, so public spaces with kids in are full of overstimulated, under-exercised children who are loud and cranky.

Yes! This is 100% an issue - I completely agree kids need to let off steam. Even screaming once in awhile. But we need places for them to do it where it's okay, and safe. Not just open your back door and let loose the little he11ions... take them to a park or something. It's the same as if I don't walk my dog enough and he's fussy and barking. Why is that not allowed but kids can scream like banshees right outside my bedroom? Let them get it out of their systems someplace else.

We all share one world. And there are various anoying factors all around us. I don't mind kids, I mind a******s and a*****e parents who don't parent their children. But you can't control everything in your soroundings. There's traffic, drills, landmowers, dogs barking, teenagers playing loud music etc. The best solution for this girl is to marry a bilionaire and live on some huge property or to go live in Alaska, Siberia, Tibet... Those are pretty child free 😏

Yes. I think the best thing for her would be to build her own backyard pool, swim at a friend's backyard pool, or maybe join a gym that doesn't allow kids with a pool. I don't know if she can afford it.

If the adults in the neighborhood are responsible adults, then children will not be a problem. If the adults in the neighborhood are not responsible adults, you've got big problems whether there are children there or not.

I completely agree. Children have taken over every space and their behavior has become much worse. Children used to know how to be seen and not heard (like keep your voice down inside and don't disturb other people), but now they are just obnoxious. And what is with girls just screeching/screaming like they are being murdered when they are playing outside? Annoying.

Oof, i feel you. I'm currently in a flat that's part of a block that surrounds a playground (moved there out of nessecity at the time) and for someone who's pretty sensitive to sound, the screeching is absolute torture. I don't blame the kids because if you're can't screech and act like a fool on the playground, where are you going to do it?? But i really, really hope i am in a position to move soon because the screeching man, it hurts my soul.

As a single, 35+ woman I can say this with all the honesty in my heart, I would love an adult only neighborhood. I hate kids and haven't had any of my own for a reason, so how come every time I go somewhere with my friends (non-alcoholic places) I have to put up with other people's? From restaurants, to movie theaters, to grocery/clothing shopping, someone has brought their kid and they're completely unable to keep the damn thing quiet. So I would pack up my animals and move in a heartbeat to an adult only neighborhood, just add my name to the wait list for it.

I totally get this, as there are times I want to tape the mouths of my kids shut just to get some quiet. But, I think it needs to be recognized that the problem isn't the kids - it's the parents who let the kids behave this way in public. Yes, the brach, a playground, etc are places where kids can and should be allowed to run around and be loud, but, they should have been taught to do that with consideration to the other people there, or be supervised by a parent/adult making sure they are considerate for the other people. So many time individual groups get blamed for problems (it's the kids/parents/boomers/millennial, etc who cause the problem) when really it's a lack of common courtesy and consideration for other people that is causing the problem.

I'm just glad I'm not the only person (woman, especially) who doesn't have positive emotions about children. I was once told I had to "heal" because I didn't want kids. At work. By a subordinate. To my boss.

That's BS. I was once told by co-workers I had to have kids because my mother needed grandchildren. I told them she does- they're just four legged and furry! I get so tired of people assuming a woman MUST have kids. Nope- don't want them- didn't want them when I was a kid, thus I will never have them, and no, I will NOT miss out on anything in life.

Kids free or noise free? Adults can make an awful lot of noise at ungodly hours too. Shift work and hanging outside chatting. Getting up early and revving your scooter. Parties with drunk and shouting people. Tv"s that's too loud or during summer the whole night ancient Bollywood movies so you can't sleep with your window open....

It has to be kid free to be noise free. Well it's not an infants fault, they are noisy and will wake up neighbors. When the parents let it cry for 2 hours while trying to sleep in the middle of the night it makes it worse. Child free and noise 10 to 10 or get evicted would be perfect

FINALLY someone says what I'm thinking! Look I don't care if u have kids, more power to you. But I don't have them for a reason and I don't think they should be thrown at me whenever a parent feels like not taking care of them. I know parents hate hearing this but you made a decision and it's not my responsibility to have to deal with your obnoxious crotch goblin.

I have 2 small kids and felt sorry for my neighbours during the lockdowns. My little ones had nowhere to go to and no way to let the excess energy out. I installed a trampoline and some other garden playground fixtures for them, so they spent the day outside often screaming and chanting nonsense. We tried to keep the volume down initially but gave up, they're kids doing kids stuff after all. There are another 2 families in the little otherwise quiet street we live in. I totally see the point in freaking out if you're trying to chill in your garden. On the other hand my kids are very well behaved in public places and we had lots of work in this. Even I hate when kids are running around screaming in a shop or worst like restaurant. It is the parents responsibility and I think sh*try parents should be ashamed when their kids can't behave

Fellow humans- I am really distressed that no one seems to see that the actual problem is awful behavior from the children, which stems directly from awful parenting/behavior of the adults around them. A well behaved and polite child is wonderful to interact with (or don't interact with! Kids are capable of pulling out a book and chilling, IF TRAINED). I have kids, I love kids, I am a teacher and work with kids, but it is infuriating and mind blowing to see how many kids can act like little AHs and no one stops them or escorts them away from polite company. That's just bad training and that kid will grow into an adult who is just as much a selfish AH. Look inward, Society! Kids are just doing what they are being trained to do. Train them differently and we HUMANS can all live together on planet earth.

Okay, I'm probably gonna get downvoted to héll for this, but guess what? Kids are *everywhere*. They're part of life. After all, if there were no kids, there'd be no more people. Humans would go extinct. Now, I have no problem with the idea of an adults only community. In fact, I'm sure they actually already exist, in some places (and I don't mean senior communities). But to whine and complain simply because children are sharing the same room as you, or the same airspace, is really too much, & just makes you seem as self-centered as the families you dislike so much. You just want a nice day of peace and quiet? Well, they just want a nice day out with their family. Neither you nor them are more entitled to one or the other. *YES*, there are some shítty parents who let their kids act like idiots. But that is a PARENT problem. Not a kid problem. Establishments should enforce EVERYONE, parent, child, or single adult alike, to follow rules & behave appropriately /1

(i.e. not running around screaming in a restaurant, or swimming in the wrong lane at a pool), or else they have to leave. (But that will never happen, because corporate doesn't care how people behave, as long as they fork over that cash, and lower level employees aren't paid enough to give a shít.) Everyone is just WAY too sensitive and butthurt over everything these days. Some issue are important. But others, well, you gotta compromise. Iqf management in the aforementioned examples tried to enforce those rules, they'd be stuck between one person who's crying that she can't enjoy her time, and another person who's crying that their kids can't enjoy theirs. Even if the kids/parents ARE in the wrong (which yeah, like I said, sometimes they are), there's just no winning. We've all gotta share this world. So we need to learn how to do it. If you're complaining about kids running around screaming in a quiet restaurant, that's a safety issue and a legitimate concern. /2

More times than not it's parents letting their little spawn do whatever they please. When my son was age 4-12, he was an absolute angel in public. Never ran around & screamed, never threw a fit if he didn't get his way, was never a spoiled brat. I was single mom & made sure he had manners. He's almost 37 & still a very well mannered young man. It begins with the parents. Honestly, when I'm in Walmart or any other store, it's as if every child in the county is there, screaming at the top of their lungs & parents doing nothing to curtail that horrid behavior. I completely get where this young lady is coming from.

Wholeheartedly I couldn't agree more, but suppose this was possible, what then? Pets won't be allowed either? Or better yet handymen and landscapers who put on music to work not allowed? There's more to a quiet neighborhood than just kids because if you listen around the neighborhood, there's probably more complaints about loud music and animals being loud than kids running amuck. If there's a lesson in life, there's always a heads and a tails in every decision taken. We just have to be held accountable and accept the consequences.

Would such a community allow a "buffer" of space of sorts for those who were child-free, but an unplanned kid happened? Like, say at the middle of the area there were strict child-free. If something happened and a kid came into the picture, the parents could move to the outer side of the radius, a transition spot until they get another place. Seems softer than a straight eviction. Coming from someone who doesn't have kids, doesn't want to, has an IUD and whose husband already had a vasectomy.

Lol I get the sentiment but I mean honestly, this person sounds miserable 😂 Many of these complaints seem to be the fault of the adults accompanying the kids? One time on an airplane this toddler was left to walk up & down the aisle & it kept just stopping & staring at me & who was I annoyed at? The adults!! I sympathize with parents, kids ARE alot but... I'm not about to let my kid scream in a restaurant, go over into the wrong swimming lanes and kick people's chairs 🤷‍♀️ Kids are a part of life, get over it. They exist. You can't just get what you want all the time, a lesson that children must learn and clearly so does OP!

She's an "influencer", and that already makes me lose most of the respect that I would have for her and her opinions. A perusal through her Instagram shows that she's all about wealthy-kid style performative justice, selling overpriced pseudo-environmental junk as though it was saving the planet, pushing toxic body standards, oh, and pushing Nestle products. Looking at the people she spends time with - she makes sure to spend her time only with people who look good on Instagram photos. There are a whole bunch of other questionable thing son her Ig as well. She hates kids because they mess up the perfect life that she's trying to photograph. Kids aren't impressed with "influencers", so they must be banned from her vicinity. I'm pretty sure that she hates old people, as well.

Seriously, what makes her think she would be allowed in an adults only suburb? Other adults may not want to have that annoying twåt around. And there are snobby neighborhoods that you have to be voted in by your future neighbors, so they kind of already exist.

Probably an unpopular opinion: this woman is a major AH for proposing this. I'm childfree, I totally understand the need to have quiet times, but what this person (and ppl likeminded) fail to understand, is that children are people too!!!!! I bet this person, as well as everyone here, myself included, annoyed the sh*t out of a lot of ppl in various places in our childhoods. If the idea of segragating people of color, indigenous, and other minorities is outrageous, criminal nowadays, why is it ok to segragate children? I understand wanting a child-free event, but this proposition is just horrible! People on the internet is always preaching empathy, we always vent about our traumas (mostly come from our formative years). To do this and support this idea is ludicrous and hypocrite. I'm all for accontability of bad parenting / bad child behaviour. The world needs this to be a better place. But what this person is saying is insane at best and downright criminal IMHO. Edited for clarification.

The folks behind us have a pool. Their kids are fairly noisy using it but it's after the kids go to bed that the REAL noise starts! The parents turn up the loud music and use foul language while drinking with their friends. I don't know how their kids sleep through it because I can't.

I'd sign up for this like a shot. My new downstairs neighbours have five kids of various ages, with the youngest two being at the Running Around Stupid Screaming Like A Banshee stage. I'm all for kids being kids, but there's a time and a place for it - and it's not at 10pm on a weeknight when I'm in bed trying to sleep because I've got work in the morning and have to be up at 6am.

I'm a mom a d FULLY respect those that are childfree/don't like kids (people who don't like them should absolutely NOT have them and that's FINE) I just don't know how you find a developer willing to DO that. There's also the option of trying to find a place where pools are by age, or have adult only time.

I don't blame children or animals for being loud and obnoxious; it's absolutely the parents. The real problem is that there's no system in place to ensure that people raise their kids well and what rules exist about people conducting themselves safely and considerately are largely unenforced, especially now. Daily, I see that people generally do as they please, uncaring of the effect it has on others. So, of course children and pets are allowed to behave badly.

Here is the issue for those who think this could actually happen. You buy a house in a kid free zone, and surprise 2 years later you are pregnant. Now what do you do, sell the house? What if the housing market is down and you can't even sell it for enough to pay off the mortgage. What happens if you say screw it I'm staying and having my kid here, do you get harassed and fined by a-hole hoa's, are there criminal zoning violations? What and how do you think this could ever work. The senior living works cause nobody is getting pregnant at 55+, but younger just won't work. The best you could do is rent an adult only apartment where if pregnant you just move and get evicted if you don't by the time of the birth. Even then evicting new mothers is a difficult prospect.

This whole child free thing has gotten out of hand. I've been known I wanted to be a mom, my twin sister has never been sure. But the aggressive hate and sometimes, even an expression of harm against small children is unwarranted and disturbing. Kids exist, some of you adults need to gtf over it. A lot of you have full faculties and developed brains and still don't know how to behave. Leave kids alone.

Let's clarify something here. The problem isn't kids in general. It's *ill-behaved* kids. Yes, when kids don't know how to behave in public, that's usually the parents' fault, but just because the kids aren't really to blame doesn't make their behavior any less annoying.

It’s honestly gross how much room kids are given in society. I feel like it’s gotten worse over time too and parents are less likely to be strict too. Kids shouldn’t be allowed to live in apartments unless it’s the first or second floor too. There were some gross kids playing in the grocery store last time I went and nobody stopped them. It’s just nasty to be around.

Then what's your solution? You live in a society with children, like it or not. Kids need a roof over their heads whether or not you want to live near them. Parents need to buy food, whether or not you want to deal with them when you're shopping. Sure, there are plenty of s****y parents who don't properly discipline their kids, and that annoys everyone, but there are more parents who do. The point is, whether or not you like it, kids will always be around.

But you can't control everything in your soroundings. I completely agree. Children have taken over every space and their behavior has become much worse. Children used to know how to be seen and not heard (like keep your voice down inside and don't disturb other people), but now they are just obnoxious. And what is with girls just screeching/screaming like they are being murdered when they are playing outside? Annoying.

It has to be kid free to be noise free. Well it's not an infants fault, they are noisy and will wake up neighbors. When the parents let it cry for 2 hours while trying to sleep in the middle of the night it makes it worse. Child free and noise 10 to 10 or get evicted would be perfect

Love it when people conveniently forget that children are, in fact, people. Who do, actually, normally exist in the same spaces as adult people.

Im with it! To hell with these kids and the parents that just let them run and scream because its easier than attempting to get them to behave.

I wanted to go when I was 18, they won't let you unless you are a senior. So why are adult only apartments illegal and senior homes legal?

Hm... A whole child-free neighborhood might be a bit extreme, but otherwise I am totally with her. And to all who respond to such people with " you were a kid once too." I answer: And? What do you try say with that stupid comment? I might have been, but now I am not anymore! Maybe I was a hellspawn whose neighbors wished to be gone. What do you know?

Honey go live in a del Webb community ... Oh wait they don't want your whiny millennial a*s in there anyways. If you don't want to live in a neighborhood with kids then move to Florida in a condo where the average age is 60 plus. I'd rather deal with a couple of rambunctious kids in a bunch of drunk so-called adults in any way shape or form.
