These majestic cats come from the state of Maine, where the breed was known as far back as the early 19th century. Maine coons are a natural breed, and there isn't a lot of information about their origins, merely speculations. Some believe the cats were brought by Vikings, others—that they're descendants of long-haired cats of Marie Antoinette that were sent to North America in advance of the queen, who hoped to escape there.

Maine coons are known for their majestic fur. It's so long and thick, it makes them perfect for long and snowy winters in Maine, as they have two layers of fur. Between their toe beans, there's some fur too, for added warmth. Their distinctive ear tufts are one of the things that distinguish them from other long-haired breeds, while their fur can come in a variety of colors.
