“Don’t Get Under The Table:” Teacher Shares Tips On Staying Alive If An Active Shooter Is Nearby

Americans of an earlier generation will probably remember the ‘duck and cover’ type of safety drills at school, a somewhat optimistic protection measure in the event of an atomic explosion. While the threat of nuclear annihilation has subsided somewhat, many residents of the ‘land of the free’ still live with a nagging undercurrent of fear, highlighted by this Twitter thread by “V” (@lareinavicc.)

“I received active shooter training at work today that I feel will save my life in the unfortunate (and likely) event that someone will open fire in public so I’m gonna share my takeaways. Some stuff is obvious, the rest might not be,” she wrote.

After being taken to task for her “and likely” comment, she felt the need to clarify with the following disclaimer: I don’t say “likely” to offend. I say likely because mental health is a GROWING issue in this country. It is steadily being underfunded, yet guns are becoming more and more accessible (legally). Interesting. But that’s a convo for another day.”

Because yes, in 2017 almost 40,000 people died in shooting incidents in the U.S. That is an insanely high number and a modern day tragedy in a nation that should be doing so much better. But although the risk of getting caught in the crossfire of a shooting is real, saying that it is “likely” is definitely an exaggeration. Speaking to Bored Panda, V later clarified this. “It’s been a mixed response. Most folks were upset about the “likely” tweet,” she told us. “In hindsight, saying “likely” was an exaggeration.”

That said, the fact that workplaces feel the need to train their employees on how to react in the event of an active shooter is now a sad reality. Because it’s always better to be prepared if the worst were to happen isn’t it? V is a teacher at a school, and with 113 people killed or injured in school shootings in 2018, it definitely makes sense for teachers to be knowledgeable and well-trained about the risks. “I’m a science teacher. I absolutely love my job,” V told us. “I feel safe at work but the training definitely gave me some solid steps to follow if I was ever in that kind of situation because, before the training, I would’ve gotten under the table.”

Her eye-opening thread runs through some practical advice on what to do when faced with an active shooter incident, giving some common-sense tips that could one day save your life. Some of them may seem obvious now, but logic and reasoned thought can quickly fly out of the window when faced with the panic of a life-or-death situation.

When your survival instincts kick in, the choices you make are critical. While it may feel natural to hide yourself away somewhere and hope it passes you by, acting positively and taking the initiative will increase your chances of getting out alive.

This could either be escaping through any available exits as soon as possible or, if that’s not possible, using some tricks to make it harder for an attacker to enter your space.

As a last resort, it’s time to take the fight directly to the attacker. But how do you confront someone who is armed and dangerous? You have to outsmart them. Easier said than done, but any steps to increase your odds of survival are necessary.

Even if you did happen to take a bullet, your chances of making it out alive are still in the balance. It’s almost impossible to imagine what it must be like to have been shot and be wounded, but there are critical steps you can take to stay alive until medical help arrives on the scene.

Tragic events in the past could’ve been less lethal if some of these common-sense steps had been common knowledge. That’s why, as sad as it seems, this kind of training is necessary and important and can end up making the difference between life and death.

Sad to think so many people in the U.S. think their shooting hobby is more important than other people's lives. P.S.: Hope she's a maths teacher, since she doesn't know how to spell "barricade".

Valid and helpful information. But so, so sad that this needs to be taught. Less access to firearms would change the 'likely' to 'unlikely event' at the beginning of this post.

@Yael if you're a nurse you should know that it's not only about losing a limb, but also because the high concentration of potassium in the limb could result in a CARDIAC ARREST. Hence extra precautions to be taken which are not mentioned in the thread.

Korea is technically officially still at war. And yet... It's much more peaceful than the USA, apparently. Guess what? Guns are illegal here. Pro-gunners say it's people who cause harm, not guns. Well, then, don't give guns to people. Allow guns only to those who underwent special trainings for special licences and who signed security and responsibility related pledges. And make guns more expensive, so that they be less accessible. I mean, these things can be a start, I guess.

Its unbeliable that USA did not restrict yet the access to guns... They have so many deads that they could avoid, so much violence... Here in Europe you barely ever hear about somebody geting shot...

The fact that such a Twitter thread is posted in the US but would never, for whatever reason, be found in Europe, should make you think that some things might not be as they should. (And I do not mean to imply, what. Merely crying for "confiscate all firearms" will likely not do.)

Exactly - thats why so many people get shot by the Police. Everyone is considered potentially armed. Just Googled fatal police shootings US and UK. 2018 there were almost 1000 fatal shooting by Police - 47 officers fatally shot. In the UK those figures are - 1 civilian and Zero officers (that I can find). Does that not say something about free-for-all gun ownership?

Oh god, that's terrible. Instead of fight the shooting issue, people in the US just adapted into the idea to be shot on public ... I always wanted to visit US, because of the beautiful national parks, but I'm very scared of what is considered as normal there.

Pavel you said it so perfectly: “instead of fight the shooting issue, people in the US just adapted to the idea of being shot.” It is so true and it makes me sick. Also many pro gun Americans (ammosexuals) think we should have guns in national parks.

There is some serious misinformation about tourniquets here. 1) They should only be used in last resort. 2) They should be placed right above the articulation 3) When you tie it, write down the exact time. You want to stay alive AND keep your limb.

All around the world schoolchildren learn things like grammar, mathematics and geography. In the US they learn how to survive a school shooting. And the NRA keeps yelling: "Guns don't kill people.'" No, but people with guns kill people. And you can't deny that.

There was one horriffic day that a school shooter attempted to kill the students at my school in Miami. He was two classes away from ours when one of our teachers waited by the door and beat the living s**t out of him with a chair. It is a very traumatic experience, knowing that there is a very big possibility you could be dead in a few minutes. I understand if a teacher makes irrational decisions, like making us hide under desks, because they're under a lot of pressure in these situations. I am truly lucky to have survived, and hope nothing like such everg happens to any of you.

At 12 years old, should I really have to worry about whether I'll make it home alive? Should I really have to worry about what the best strategy to barricade my classroom door or survive a gunshot is? Should I have to panic when I hear the fire alarm go off, unsure whether to stay inside and possibly get burned alive or go outside and maybe get shot? I shouldn't, but I do. So ask you gun supporters out there: Is this what you want? You say that you need a gun to protect yourself, but what are you protecting yourself from? Guns? An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Trying to stop violence with violence only leads to more. Now, I'm not saying we should ban guns. I'm saying that it shouldn't be this easy to get a gun. As an middle-schooler, you may not listen to my opinion because I'm a kid, but I think the voices of America's children matter, because this issue is REAL and it's affecting us too!

Also guys, for the "counter" step -- USE THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER. Standing with your back against the wall with the door in it be ready and spray the fire extinguisher in the attacker's face. No matter what's in the extinguisher - water, fluorocarbon, poassium bicarbonate - it will disorient the attacker and probably suffocate them. And even if that somehow doesn't work, hit them in the face with it. Use it like a baseball bat.

Thank you for this post. Yes I do live in the United States and having to send my children to school is an uncomfortable feeling sometimes and working in a public establishment knowing that this could happen at any moment is on my mind a couple of times throughout the week. Everything that you all are saying makes sense… there should definitely be some kind of laws in place where guns are concerned, it's too easy to get one and make one. But it seems like no one here really gives a f**k, it's either making them money, or most of the "cop killing/gang related" etc involves 9 times out of 10 the minorities is just A-OK and in someone's sick twisted mind that's okay with them. "protection" for EVERYONE sounds better then making guns harder to access.

In my school, we are encouraged to just throw things at them and hide in a closet, but we're not allowed to use the school iPads to save ourselves, the new teachers (ex. The new German teacher), that were hired mid-year weren't told anything about safety drills. There recently was a safety drill triggered accidentally, and this is such a common occurrence that we're used to it, once it happened in German class and we had to explain to the new teacher what we were supposed to do (what the school told us to do), and then what the old German teacher (who moved across the country) told us to do, she told us to throw the iPads, to flip over desks near the door so that they couldn't manuver around the room, to break the (poorly made) windows (they only open a few inches, we're on the first floor) to use metal water bottles as a weapon, to use the doors that we're not supposed to used.

I've been out of school for over ten years now and they were just starting these sort of drills when I was there. We would have all been dead. It was always 'everyone get under your desks and be quiet.' No escape plans, no barricades. Glad they've adjusted to a more proper and safe way of doing these drills. It's incredibly sad we need them in the first place.

@ashasaurus Rex whilst knife and acid attack crimes are a problem in the U.K, they are not a problem within our schools, churches, work places like gun shootings are in this post. You have a gun problem in gangs and rival turf wars etc and that's where our knife and acid attack crimes are an issue. We can go to school/ Work/ church etc everyday all day without worrying about being stabbed (yes there have been like 2-3 stabbing in schools in the last 10 or so years where 1 person in each place has died) or having acid thrown over us.

First, this isn't about any politics. Second, it's not about guns. Third it's about unhinged people that want to do harm to others. Be aware, be prepared do what you can to survive. I carry a knife at all times mainly because it's quite useful and also a means of protection. The world hasn't gotten worse, the media has just become much more aware of what keeps us scared and afraid.

If you are in a science lab, fire extinguishers are an amazing defensive weapon. Unless a shooter is in a full gas mask, a shot to the face with a fire extinguisher will incapacitate them almost immediately. While they are incapacitated, you have a big, heavy metal cylinder in your hand .. use your imagination. I suggest the gonads, followed by the face.

Thankfully she is a physics teacher and not an English teacher, although is she talks like that in class, she shouldn't be teaching at all. Second, CONFETTI? Are you kidding me? Unless you are right next to the door, torn up paper doesn't travel very far. Let's see, what else could you throw at a gunman to throw him off or maybe even injure him? Laptops, phones, books, chairs. Anything with more mass than shredded paper. Whoever came up with that is an idiot. If a gunman comes through a door and has 5 chairs headed for him, you'll hopefully bring him down long enough to disarm him.

Coming from a former trauma counselor that worked in juvenile detention centers (and while they were no rifles, there were violent assaults daily so crisis management was an enormous part of my job): DO NOT OVERESTIMATE YOUR CAPABILITIES. If you do not have formal training in something like martial arts, you’re at a massive disadvantage in a situation where you’re going head-to-head with someone holding an assault rifle. Know your limits. Understand that YOU are the vulnerable one, and while any efforts to take them down are noble and brave, your odds of not walking away from that encounter are huge. Don’t assume that just because you always beat your older brother at living room wrestling that you're capable of disarming an active shooter in the face of imminent death.

Re tourniquet placement: no. You do NOT put it 'closest to the heart' unless you have a desire for the injured to lose a limb. 2-3" above the wound, with pressure (tie point) directly above the primary vein/artery. Do. Not. Loosen. Must not be on for +2 hours, or permanent tissue damage will occur.

Tourniquet is the correct medical term. And yes, if you know what to use, and where to use it in relation to the wound, it can save a life. Sad that there are schools giving classes to students on how to apply tourniquets, but it's a good skill for everyone to know.

Pretty sure 40,000 people aren't killed in shootings in the United States. The breakdown is as follows. 21,175 suicides 11,208 homicides 505 deaths due to accidental or negligent discharge of a firearm. Of those 11,208, about a 1,000 are killed by the police. The number killed in schools by an assailant? Under a hundred. https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2018/02/19/parkland-school-shootings-not-new-normal-despite-statistics-stretching-truth-fox-column/349380002/

Aren’t the shooters usually students? If they are and have been “trained” with the rest of the students, they could have a whole new plan. Sorry, I just think like this.

In Australia after one of the biggest mass shootings in the last century by a maniac in Port Arthur, Tasmania, the Government said "Right, enough is enough. Everyone in the country hand in your guns." Australians thought "Yeah, that seems sane and fair enough. OK" ... and tens of thousands of guns were handed in. If you tried that in America it would be "WHAT?? No way! You're not taking my GUNS!" Pathetic cowards too scared to be without their little guns. American culture really is totally fu#ked.

Why does no one talk about Switzerland who has a high gun ownership but a low homicide rate. Its about the culture not the weapons.

No one should talk about Switzerland in this context because we, the Swiss, are a bit tired of being dragged into this mess. Yes, a lot of our citizens have weapons, but we also have super strict gun laws. Gun laws, that amongst other things absolutely prohibit a person who has been convicted of a crime from owning a weapon. Background checks for the win, you know.

This is all great advise except about the tourniquet. Never use one unless you are bleeding so bad you will die without it. Use of a tourniquet can very likely cause you to lose that limb and is for extreme trauma. A bullet would not cause that in your arm or leg unless they hit an artery. The rest of the article was great though. How sad that we need it.

Yael

Sue, I am a nurse practitioner (masters in nursing) and currently work in both ER/OR. The information about tourniquets is indeed useful. I'm assuming you're referring to possible tissue damage which can occur in the localized area where the tourniquet has been applied? Short answer: Yes, tissue damage can and does sometimes happen. But it's not a one-for-one swap. There is very little evidence that the emergency use of a tourniquet causes any significant damage to the usually already injured extremity. Another thing, the word *emergency* is key. A tourniquet is an immediate, assured way to prevent the loss of blood when used correctly. In a shooter situation, we can assume health care professionals will arrive on scene quickly to assist victims and we are trained on how/when to remove a tourniquet. We know they are not for long term use. Lastly, the loss of blood can be steady and quick and it is very dangerous, almost always resulting in death. It's a life over limb situation.

Avoid and barricade are good plans, but the confront tips are going to get you killed. For one, throwing paper is going to give away your position. It will not confuse them, they will just shoot in that direction, or shine their flashlight they likely have in that direction and then shoot. Grabbing the top of the pistol to prevent the empty casing from exiting is going to burn your hand. Those casings come out very hot. Even if you are able to do that it only takes a second or two to fix the jam. How are you going to beat them up, especially if they have multiple weapons? What if they're stronger than you? Then you're dead. There's a reason they called the gun the great equalizer, it doesn't matter how much stronger the other person is if you have one. If you are hiding in the dark from the shooter it's a lot better if you yourself have a gun. That way when they come in you shoot them. If you don't have a gun, at least pick up a blunt object before hitting the lights to knock them out right away.

Yael

1. Would you rather be dead or have a burnt hand? 2. The article is about school shootings, assuming it's not a you vs. them situation. Hopefully other people will assist in the "beating". 3. School kids won't ever be strapped with guns so there goes that argument. 4. Stop being so overly critical and see that this article was meant to create awareness.

It's totally fine to teach workplace safety in the unlikely event of a shooting because knowledge is never bad, but goddamn we need to be honest about the probability. You're WAY more likely to die at the hands of a drunk driver or speeder but we love alcohol and cars can go way over the speed limit and nobody complains. Stop giving in to the fear mongering and go with statistics and logic instead. 325,000,000 people and only a select few are unfortunate enough to die in a shooting, yet it gets the lion's share of the the attention. Why? It's not pragmatic at all.

"grab the top of the gun" and if he's using a revolver. Revolvers have a gap between barrel and cylinders that house the ammo. Side blast can and will tear your fingers off. Have fun. "turnicate" - does she mean a tourniquet, by any chance ? (...stemming a gunshot wound with a maxi pad) - WHAT?!!!!!! ( ... tell the victim to exhale ... ) - if she means doing chest wound decompression, you do it with a proper needle, while HAVING F*****G MEDICAL TRAINING ONLY, not with a maxi pad. If she means protective wound dressing where there is a lung puncture, you use a proper, sterile, hermetic!!! dressing. Again, not a f*****g maxi pad. DONT listen to her. just DONT.

People who advocate for a right to carry "concealed" weapons are part of the problem. Restricting access to guns overall is a much better solution than everyone arming up and getting paranoid and distrustful of random strangers. You are acting as if you live in a war zone and not a country that hasn't had a war on its territory in more than a 150 years.

There is some serious misinformation about tourniquets here. 1) They should only be used in last resort. 2) They should be placed right above the articulation 3) When you tie it, write down the exact time. You want to stay alive AND keep your limb.

Unfortuantely in ly school, they tell us to get under the tables and stay quiet but we are barely protected if anything happens... And as a student, if I do the opposite of what is asked, I have no idea what will happen.. Even if we want to act for the safety of others we aren't allowed to do anything and I need advice so that a majority of us in my school can talk to the headmaster and imprve our security
