Everybody deserves to be healthy because being full of energy means leading a good life. However, health becomes a real issue if you have to pay your weight in gold whenever you need to go to the hospital.
When US Senator Bernie Sanders asked his Twitter followers what the most absurd medical bill they’ve ever received was, the floodgates opened. The stories were shocking, to say the least. So here is a compilation of the most ridiculous medical bills that Americans were presented with. Get ready for your jaw to drop and your eyes to pop because some of these are unbelievable. Upvote the bills you found the most shocking, leave us a comment and remember to share with your friends.

I have a huge lump in my throat from reading the ones where babies die. I can't possible imagine what you went through
I know what they went through with the loss of their child. What I thankfully don't know is what they went through with the bills afterwards
Load More Replies...Again, to say medicare for all or universal healthcare is bad, go swallow a bullet. Good people with decent jobs who have been law abiding citizens their whole lives shouldn't be burdened or forced with things like this.
And people who lose their children but have to pay a fortune should not be burdened with that cost due to privatized insurance and medical.
Load More Replies...What ? That's the most disgraceful, humiliating, shameful, insulting, disgusting and shittiest treatment any insurance company can give to any responsible client as regards issues on a stillborn infant. Sure the company is proud to be American. Get what you deserve bunch of financial losers. Shame on you. And you Americans I hope you get the support from Europeans who receive free medical treatments (we pay our taxes though). It's a shame you are sometimes prouder to invest your taxes in killing foreigners abroad rather than taking care of your own citizens. And I apologise if you feel offended.
one day, i hope, someone will explain to the rest of the world what`s "make america great again " mean ...
It is purely POLITICAL. Either there is comprehensive healthcare for all - or there is not. In practically all ways, it seems, are the less financially sound individuals free to be screwed over by Corporate America. That is far removed from being a democracy.
Load More Replies...I think this is a reality in many poor countries. The difference is that a rich country like the US could prevent things like this.
Load More Replies...That any country would afford this is beyond imagination. The loss in human capital far outweights any "socialist" effects (should such exist at all). The loss in societal welfare is yet another story.
btw. There was a patient at the ER- he was from Turkey (to explain- within EU you are cover by any insurance provided by other EU country for basic health care. You may pay initioaly but you get a refund). So he has- ultrasound and some blood and urine test done, painkillers given. He paid sth around 200PLN that is... 50 USD.
Load More Replies...I never understood how people are able to live with this much debt. I mean, I've heard stories of Americans who are well in their fifties when they finally pay off their student loans, so how do they cope with over a hundred grand in medical bills?
Its very strange to read this. Since I was a child and started watching cartoon network that I've always admired the United States. My dream trip is going to the USA with my family you know? Cruzing those green landscapes, visiting San Francisco, New York, going to Texas and Winsconsin. I love american cinema, music, games, authors like Edgar Alan Poe, genious like Tesla, I mean s**t Cow and Chicken changed my life, I still watch now and then and Im a 31 year adult! Reading this makes me feel disapointed.. that a nation I admire threats their own like this. We have free healthcare in Portugal, we also have donuts!
Exactly the same here. I grew up thinking the US was the land where dreams were made. Hollywood, New York, the White House, blue Jeans, Marlboro. All the music, series, food and trends came from there. Now, I wouldn't want to live there if they paid me.
Load More Replies...This is why ANYONE who think EVERYONE doesn't deserve to get healthcare should jump off this planet. "I'm sorry, you don't have enough money, you'll just have to die even though we have the means to save your life but require payment to save it."
And this will never change as long as insurance companies can throw millions at politicians. And politicians should not get top tier insurance with their job, they should fend for themselves like millions of us do. Watch how fast the system changes if that happened.
How about getting back to being a democracy? Forbid lobbying and gerrymandering, and make it mandatory for every state to have every citizen registered to vote.
Load More Replies...I think - regarding the whole article - that this is abuse. Ok, the doctors cost a lot to be specialised, the medicine cost a lot, the research, the treatment. But the top-most value has to be life. The people cannot accept this abuse, and the state has to support the welfare of its citizen. But how do you measure the welfare? By the money they have, or by how precious the life is?
This is the US you're talking about. It's ALL about the money.
Load More Replies...And you'll notice that the "pull yourselves up by your bootstraps/socialism is evil" crowd don't pay their medical bills out of pocket. They buy into a system where the healthy pay the costs of people who get sick - insurance.
Load More Replies..."Medical bankrupcy" this expression does not even exist in my language (german) breaks my heart to read those stories
As far as I understood from this case is: if they saved your life, they own it.
Load More Replies...I also broke my neck in a car crash, I also owed an absurd amount for "medical bills" and I also filed for medical bankruptcy before I even finished my first semester in college.

Load More Replies...I read recently that around 60% of bankruptcies in the US are the result of medical bills.
Load More Replies...Some of these bills reached tens-of-thousands and even hundreds-of-thousands of bills. I’ll be honest with you, when I saw them I genuinely thought I was either seeing things or that somebody accidentally added a couple of extra zeroes.
Is anything in that country for free? Can you breath for free? Or... maybe you went for the stitches removal to an all inclusive 5stars resort?
Not really. Everything that happens in America revolves around someone making a profit at someone else's expense.
Load More Replies...I'm pretty sure if you walk into a hospital, take one nice deep breath and tell them you are visiting a friend, you will get a hospital bill lol.
The US needs to cut the budget for the military, at least, in half, pull troops out of all of these European countries that get "free" health care and prescriptions. If they want to keep at it, let them do it themselves. The money can be used for the US to get "free" health care, etc........
I had an appt to get stitches out and I was visiting my mother and she said, 'let me see'. I showed her and she just went :::yoink::: 'there, I just saved you money'. That's what our system has conditioned us to do, home healthcare to save money. Glad the scar is in a non-visable place.
this is why I have removdy my children's and my husbads anytime they've had them not paying that b s............................................................................... bmo
This is dangerous as it's forcing people to do their own procedures. People from other Western countries are stunned at how backward America is with their so called health care system, that just ruins people financially and puts them in danger.
Nice to read someone who had some wisdom about the medical profession BEFORE they got fleeced.
That is a shame, I swear I think doctors request test just to run up the bill.
That's more happy coincidence of the policy I think: If they don't run every likely & unlikely test and it turns out there's something else then the department is liable to getting sued for ludicrous sums. It's a whole ecosystem of problems, not a single cause (like greed) to fix!
Load More Replies...I would send them a penny taped to the bill with a penny stamp on the envelope with no outside return address.
If people have an word to say in that country, they have to change sòmething. It's very wrong. How it came to this situation I cannot imagine. The life itself has the rating below money.
Greed. People with the most money funnel it to lobbyist who make sure no action is taken in government.
Load More Replies...Disgusting. The poor lady, I really hope she found a way to cope with all that on top of the trauma she likely went through. This is horrible!
I’m so sorry for your loss and the added grievance for getting the confirmation at this cost 😢
C section was probably not necessary tbh, less than 20% of sections in the USA are actually necessary. Advocate for yourself, don’t give into fear mongering.
How does an insurance adjustor get to trump the obstetrician who said the emergency C-section was necessary?
The US needs to cut the budget for the military, at least, in half, pull troops out of all of these European countries that get "free" health care and prescriptions. If they want to keep at it, let them do it themselves. The money can be used for the US to get "free" health care, etc........
The harsh reality is that healthcare is incredibly expensive in the United States, and plenty of people always wonder: “Why?” Investopedia explains that healthcare in the US is “about twice as expensive as it is in any other developed country.” However, despite the cost, the US healthcare system is only the 37th in quality, according to the World Health Organization.
Ah, but the eggs they do so you can sue them for $12K or more.
Why did you go? I don't understand these posts. You said you fixed it yourself. Did they handcuff you and take you, or were you able to open your mouth and say. No thanks I'm fine.
In the USA you're legally required to go to the hospital for mental breakdowns, broken bones, any type of head injury, asthma attacks, and more to just "make sure we're safe". They don't trust us with your own health, but trust us with machine guns
Load More Replies...Just got a Bill for $1066 for an ambulace charge to take my husband from one part of the hospital where he broke his arm to the emergency department of the same hospital!
NEVER stay overnight for 'observation'.. it's always a ripoff to charge you for un-need s**t... the bill wont be just for the overnight bed. you can always find someone to observe you overnight... go to a 24hr diner if you have to.
If you had already treated it, why did you okay for the stay in the hospital??? If you ask for a private room, should they just charge you for a shared room because it was available??? You get charged for what you authorised!!! Did you tell them that you were allergic to eggs?????
I hear ya. My bill for a UTI was $6,000. They didn't even diagnose me. I walked and told them what was wrong what antibiotic I needed. What am I paying $6,000 for?
Also had a kidney stone. Went to the emergencyroom of a hospital in Portugal. They drugged me up . Did an ultrasound. Analysed my urine to determine it was a stone indeed (plus a bladder infection). Prescribed painkillers, antibiotics, pills to protect my stomach from the antibiotics and charged me 15 Euros (!) for the drugs. That was it!
Load More Replies...Honestly, you should be suing them for failure to diagnose and treat a fairly simple ailment.
I suspected I had kidney stones, went for an echo. They found gallbladder stones and bladder stones and benign prostate hypertrophy. So I had my gallbladder laparoscopically removed, and in a second procedure bladder stones removed and a Thulium laser transurethral prostatectomy. My Hospital bill was : $ 0.00 That is what Dutch Universal Healthcare means!
And you cannot imagine what it's like trying to fight these bills. Once they've charged you, they don't back down. It can take months, years and even then, you are unlikely to win, and if you do, you still have all the surcharges added to the original bill, and your entire credit destroyed because in the meantime, the bill has been sent to a collection agency. It's criminal what they do with healthcare in the USA.
After ~2 years, your credit should be back to normal, and the charge drops off after 7. Idk what happens if the collectors keep selling the debt to other companies, though.
Load More Replies...My husband has kidney stones. The first time he passed one he had to have an overnight stay in hospital, and had morphine. Every year he has a scan and/or x-ray. All for free. Thank goodness we live in the UK.
I live in Germany. I was in hospital with kidney stones twice. The second time i had to underwent a surgery to get it removed. Both times i only had to pay 10 euros per day i was in hospital. So i had to pay like 80 euros in total. Healtcare works
How is it that a human life obviously has no value in this nation? How can America ever be "great" again, as long as this madness continues?
Because it was never great to begin with unless you were rich.
Load More Replies...How awful. Nobody should be in a situation where you have to decide between your health and a bill
And the latest thing for ectopic pregnacies is "watchful waiting" because apparently even a condition that is 98% likely to kill both the mother AND the foetus isn't enough to dissuade the foetus-fetishists into allowing an absolutely *necessary* abortion.
Bloody hell, I had an ectopic pregnancy and paid nothing. I had 3 Ultrasounds, ambulance transfer to a different hospital, emergency surgery, blood transfusion, IV’s, drains, catheter, medications and 4 days in hospital with all the are involved and didn’t have to pay a penny and I don’t have private health insurance either. I am so glad I live in Australia.
Our public health system is pretty bloody great. I have a chronic condition that requires specialist visits and procedures every year, and it's all free. My GP visits are free and all I have to pay for is meds. I certainly wouldn't be able to afford to keep my condition under control if I lived in America. We are definitely the lucky country.
Load More Replies...I had the same life saving surgery got home got better and got an 82,000 bill. Lady called and said you can make payment arrangements at $2,000 a month I said sure let me reach right around to my backside and pull it out my a*s for you
So sorry for your pregnancy gone wrong. That debacle wouldn't have happened in Canada. If you are working, you pay a very reasonable amount for medical insurable. If you're not working retired, you are treated for a nominal fee or nothing. I'm Canadian; I know that for a fact !
Only RICH human life matter - haven;t you been listening? They have the money but get it for free because they also have insurance!
You still having sex with your ex???? Make HIM pay the bill !!!! It was his baby too!!!!
Harvard economist David Cutler told Investopedia that the main reason why US healthcare costs are sky-high is this: “The administrative costs of running our healthcare system are astronomical. About one-quarter of healthcare cost is associated with administration, which is far higher than in any other country.”
Rich people with addictions are admired for getting treatment; they have addictions because they have problems, and it's so admirable that they're honest about them and work on them. Poor people with addictions are judged and demonized; they have addictions because they're lazy and morally bankrupt, and they don't deserve help.
I am so happy i live in Norway when i read these horrorstories, here helatcare is free, we pay taxes to finance it.
My cousin couldn't afford that. In and out of jail, ended up on state assistance because she couldn't keep a job because, just, so much meth. They don't do good rehab with state insurance though- they do pay enough to keep her institutionalized full time now though that she can no longer function like a normal human... I imagine having a few years of quality treatment would've cost less than keeping her institutionalized for the remainder of her life, but that's not what they went with.
THIS is the best post on this thread. Good for you and this is what I mean about people taking responsibility for their actions!!
The ads on tv for treatment says your “private insurance would cover most of it” (in so many words). I’ve really never met anyone (including myself) who could afford “private insurance”.
In some states, you can make the courts force an abuser to do things like that, but that involves going through the courts, paying for a lawyer, giving evidence that you were abused, etc. But that involves more money as well as reliving trauma. And this is all if you're lucky enough to live in a state that has good enough laws protecting abuse victims. A lot of states are absolute s**t when it comes to stuff like that
Load More Replies...Yes. Liability. If someone hits your car, they are liable for the medical bills.
Load More Replies...Well, if you'd made proper life choices you'd be making money as a fashionable social media sociopath. Instead, some jerk set your house on fire. Perthonable Rethponthibility!
They don't. They write it off and sell the debt. They may not hear anything for a while until a third party buys the debt and tries to collect.
Load More Replies...Hold on, I'll check the sofa cushions. I'll get that $480,000 right to you.
My spine fusion was over $600k, but my Medicare plan covered all but $200. Medicare for All can be done, but we ALL gotta pay in.
And that is the problem the ALL. The rich dont pay, the poor dont pay, and the undocumented immigrants dont pay. But all will use the service except for maybe the rich.
Load More Replies...BE WARE....the bill will still be yours with interest, trust me they will not write that bill off, you will be getting lots of phone calls, letters billing you and threatening you, they will garnish your paychecks and take anything and everything you have in checking and saving acct, If you have a saving acct in your name and someone else's name, even if it is not your money, they will take it out of that account as long as your name is on it.
Sounds like a misplaced comma issue- I can understand 4,800... but 480,00? Especially with insurance? Yikes
It's neither Four thousand eight hundred (4,800) nor Forty eight thousand (480,00); Its Four hundred Eighty thousand (480,000 or 4,80,000). If you live in USA you'd know this is completely believable.
Load More Replies...If they stop sending bills it goes into collection, then not paying it will affect your credit rating. The hospital then does a write off
After the CARD act, while that debt may appear on your credit record, I don't think that it will affect your score. I've got a bunch of hospital bills on my report and still have a decent score.
Load More Replies...These figures are outrageous. Same with the pharmaceutical industry. That pill cost pennies to make and most people can afford them once they inflate the cost. Their excuse: "research"
"Who has $480.000?" The CEO and all the executives of your insurance company, that's who.
What’s more, the cost of medical drugs in the United States is far higher than in other developed countries. Meanwhile, American doctors are afraid of litigation, so they practice what’s called ‘defensive medicine’ — they order lots of different tests even when they know what the diagnosis is.
Fight all bills. They know some people will just give up. I fought & they paid it. It may not work 100% of the time, but something like this definitely. Also, take the complaint to Facebook.
Obama did nothing to help this. He made it mandatory for all to have coverage or get fined. I already had coverage and my premium skyrocketed. My benefits went down hill.
Obama didn't fix it. I paid almost $10000 for a natural birth, so no meds, and I didn't even stay the extra day.
I hate to argue in this respect, since i am a conservative who supports changing healthcare for the better. But after all that has happened my insurance now covers FAR less, costs much more, and RARELY changes their decision on a claim. The insurance companies are protected now, and pay for so little. I was against government run healthcare, but after this debacle we either should completely removed insurance companies (and thus drop costs by removing those special lists and 3rd parties) or go full healthcare system. Now, if we can do it without death panels and EXTREMELY long wait lists for specialized service....I'm all in (tax rate depending....75% of my income? no....I have a family to feed)
To read these feels a bit...I don't even aknowledge my feelings. I have two kids. From that moment, my ex found out, she was pregnant, to that moment, we walked out from hospital with our second daughter I payed circa 140 dollars. That includes...monthly visit to nurse during pregnancy, and towards the end, every week. The actual birth, doctor's appointments, nurses, medication, room, three nights in hospital, 4 meals per day, also for me, all the by the hand given information from diaperchange to bathing and yes, if you taught what about that, that too....140 dollars. 2 kids. Boy it is hars to live in obviosly socialistic Finland....
Obama didn't take them to task, he created his own system where the poor get fined if they don't have the money to pay for their scam insurance. They wanted over $13k in deductibles before it would kick in and cover 40%. I didn't have 13k, so I was fined $1,800 at tax time. He created a system of legalized extortion.
Pharmaceutical companies are the problem too. I don't know why people don't want the government to handle it - we are the government - it's just too many people not paying attention & not voting. It is pretty logical that if we are all in the same pool that we can getting better prices, just by the fact that we are a large group & the fact that we can negotiate. Right now, insurance companies are paying more so people without insurance can pay less or nothing, even if they could afford insurance. Just tell your doctor that you're paying cash, and he/she will charge less. Also, medical care shouldn't be tied to your job. It keeps people from retiring & giving a job to a young person and keeps people from moving jobs. It is also a heavier burden for small businesses. The ACA was a Republican plan, and the fact that the courts said it was unconstitutional to force people to buy even if they could afford it made the price go up.
Load More Replies...Vicky, ever heard the saying "if you don't have anything nice to say...?" I was in the exact same situation, FB upside down, water broke, had an emergency c-section that saved my daughters life. I'm so glad your baby was OK, OP, just sad to hear how your insurance situation turned out.
Load More Replies...I went to the ER and was admitted to the hospital. Unfortunately the actual hospital is in a different building than the ER. I had to take a $1600 ambulance from the ER to the hospital. I asked them if my husband could just drive me up the hill to the other building (about a city block distance) since he had been the one to drive me to the ER. The hospital staff said it is not allowed for "liability reasons" and that you must take an ambulance.
My husband was once charged $3000 for walking through the waiting room of a clinic inside the hospital. He wasn't going to that clinic but its waiting room was the only way to get to the part of the hospital he had to go to. He refused to pay the bill, of course.
It's for people that come in and don't pay. The people who have insurance are billed more.
That's hard to believe....but I do as I know folks who have had similar experiences !
Yup - they file it under "Pharmacy" and have no idea what it actually was. You are billed for the cheap brand of facial tissues also.
Aren"t the ER acțions/operation free of change? Or ER is considered as privat hospitals? You are not paying taxes in that country, to have state hospitals? Just wondering... anyway, strange medical system.
Sadly no. Nothing is free. It’s rare for a basic ER bill to be under $3000
Load More Replies...Read about a student in a similar situation. He woke up in great pain and he was vomiting blood for an hour. He didn't want to go to an ER (because he knew what he might be in for), but feared he literally might be dying. Went to the ER and the doctors treated him for a stomach polyp that broke an artery. They used an endoscope and he was fixed up in literally 15 minutes. He racked up 25K in ER bills and insurance refused his claim, because it wasn't life threatening. Medically true, but if you are in pain and continually vomiting blood, what would you do???
In my third world country, similar pain cost me about $100. Was in ER for about 3 hours.
She should expect to pay 12k for back pain because she's taking up space??? What planet do you live on?
I was at the ER after falling on the ice and cracking my head...the doctor said to send me home because he had me confused with another patient who had hit their head. I was like "I know I'm a little fuzzy but I don't think I've been treated..."
Come to the Eu ..we dont have to deal with that s**t ..Sure we pay more taxes spread over your yearly income but boy are you happy when you feel bad and have to go to ER ..they charge you the least amount they can and save you the extra hangover when youre already feeling like s**t ..#obamacareworksdudes
I wouldn't have said it like that but you are right. People should avoid ER and ambulances unless absolutely necessary. Having said that, you also have to realize that young, healthy people with little experience, don't always realize what is and what isn't a true emergency .
Load More Replies...What do you think of the US healthcare system, dear Pandas? Have you ever had any massive medical bills? Share your thoughts and experiences with us in the comments.
Ok so I looked up the story and here's what happened: the daughter developed a severe case of Deep Vein Thrombosis (basically, a blood clot) on a long road trip. Her leg was red, swollen, and extremely painful. She went to the ER and was pressured into leaving by the triage nurse, who told her to get insurance and see a specialist. The next day, the blood clot dislodged and turned into a pulmonary embolism. The $350,000 bill was from life support that eventually failed to save her life.
That's inhumane ! and criminal ! ! I find this hard to believe this but I do.... Have family down there...... WHY ?
I think the Health System here in the US is highway Robbery and a big joke GREED that is what it is HATE IT STAY Healthy
This one doesn't ring true. Hospitals and doctors, in an emergency, do not require proof of insurance.
This one doesn't make sense. She could have been saved but since she couldn't provide proof of insurance she was charged 350k and died? How does that work?
The ambulances in the US are insane. I have flat out refused to get into one when necessary because I couldn't afford the bill. Asked my friend to take me to the hospital from the Urgent Care instead of the ambulance they had "called" for me. Luckily, she is no stranger to the US Healthcare Mafia.
Taxis, Lyfts, and Ubers are very common rides to ERs in the US because of this
Load More Replies...As a UK citizen this whole thread sounds absolutely insane, but are you seriously telling me in the US you can be unconscious- with no way of giving consent to people performing a service that YOU didn't request- and YOU can still be charged for it? How on earth can that be legal? Wow. Serious f'd up.
I live in the UK now but Ireland isn't much better you pay for everything. The fact I have a child with a medical condition was definitely a factor in deciding to move here.
Load More Replies...In France, Firefighters are part of the emergency health system and cn bring you for free to the hospital... Also public ambulance (SAMU or SMUR) are totally free !!!
Glad here in Canada there is just one ambulance service that only charges $80 for a trip one way.
It's free in New Zealand, but because it is a charity they ask for a donation.
$500 ambulance bill. I paid it because they made no mention of it being covered by my insurance. Ouch.
I had to pay €600, just to hear: oh you're not making eye contact with me, you're autistic. I was severely depressed and felt ashamed back then.
I've gotten the opposite - I'm autistic and have anxiety but not depression. I have gotten before "you won't make eye contact, you have depression, hve all the pills". No, I'm autistic.
Load More Replies...with greedy psych evaluation people like that, that's a very valid question.
This is why "psychiatry" is total bullhonkey. Their DSM V is literally labeling EVERY possible thought or action you can do as a mental disorder. They literally say that if you have a conflict - say sexual harassment at work - the CONFLICT is a mental disorder. Not you, not your sexist boss, the CONFLICT - and that conflict needs drugs.... Other head-job idiots looked at brain sensor imagery and thought there was a close similarity between someone with chronic pain and who was grieving from a nearby person's death, a divorce, etc. So they advised that if your most loved person/being on the planet dies - take aspirin for 3 days, and if you are STILL grieving (good grief - they TOLD you to get over it!) after 3 days then - they got drugs!
Pharmaceuticals are big business and could care less if your life is at risk because you cannot afford medications. Cost very little to make these treatments compared to the bill you get. They justify this on the bases of "research". This is another vile industry just like insurance. No compassion
I'd be more inclined to believe the 'research' claim if they weren't spending hundreds of millions on advertising.
Load More Replies...Jesus Christ! That's awful! I live in The Netherlands where chemo costs €570 per treatment and is fully covered by basic healthcare insurance. I had 16x chemo, 16x radiation and a mastectomy. Total cost €20.000. Didn't pay a penny. I have additional healthcare insurance for €5 a month that gets me free oedematherapy once a month.
Even costs for travelling to and from the hospital is covered. Over a period of 1 year I got to claim €1000.

Journal of Clinical Oncology - 2005. First study of all cancers and all chemos to find the real 5yr survival rate. It is a 97.9% 5yr death sentence. And it hasn't gotten better since then.
Back in 2001, my insurance wouldn't cover my one medication, so I bought it at Costco 100 tablets for $35. It lasted 6 months for me. This past June, I had a kidney stone and my insurance wouldn't cover that same medicine. It was $25 for 20 tablets using GoodRx. How is it possible that a drug that cost so little then, cost that much more later! In my mind, it should still cost the same!
Seniors in the USA have access to a public health care called Medicare. My mom had cancer, a hysterectomy and radiation therapy and ended up paying something like $200 total. The rest of us, not seniors, especially higher income (over $50,000 year) have to pay for expensive monthly premiums with high deductibles which may not cover all of our health care need especially emergencies. It sucks!
Didn't you know there is a $900 speaking fee, plus $75 eye contact fee. Then another $25 just for walking in the door?
That's 45$ per letter for the sentence he said, and the spaces between the words are even free! What a bargain! Glad he didn't include an exclamation mark or something else from the top shelf.
Load More Replies...So, MAYBE two minutes, tops. Well, that certainly makes the fee more reasonable.

What does it say when veterinarians have more compassion than health care for human beings? My kitten died two weeks ago after getting spayed and they didn't charge me anything.
How on Earth ultrasound can cost $933? Here in Lithuania in the most expensive private clinic it costs $77!!!!
Then what is so great about America if this is how the hospitals' bills are???...ridiculous !!!
Makes me so damn sick to read all these. Costs $0000 to have a baby in Canada, and same if you lose the child. No cost. No cost for any Ned procedures. Some drugs cost money, but NEVER anything medical. I’m so sorry for you all. Sad in Canada 😥
..we do pay it though...in the form of taxes...its not as "free" as you think...just not as outrageously expensive..
Load More Replies...I'm so sorry........ I'm in Canada, lost a baby, (didn't tell me gender) at 19 weeks, I was devastated but didn't cost me a cent.......because everyone here pays a modest monthly payment for universal health care. Sadly, if his best friend was married in a community property state, like California, their spouse would inherit and be responsible for that 2 million dollar debt. Really awful stuff.
Could they reject the inheritance? Where I'm from, it is possible to renounce everything you might inherit to avoid being ladden with the debts of someone else. Had to do this for my father (no contact at all, but would have inherited his debts if I hadn't).

However, the doctor that treated me spent the entirety of every treatment (twice a day for close to a month) telling me exactly how much I was costing the Department of the Army. The final bill was over a million dollars in 1990. (My dad served for 28 years and did three tours in Vietnam to get this insurance for his family but this doctor clearly thought I was unworthy and took every opportunity to explain what the money they were "wasting" on me could do for the soldiers.)
What a s**t doctor and insensitive human being for shaming you like that. I hope you and your family never felt an ounce of guilt, especially after the years of service and sacrifice your dad and family went through to serve his country.

The medicals and insurance companies need to go to hell and collect. They surely won't be allowed in heaven...
Does everyone think if you die you shouldn’t have to pay the medical bills? If they spend $2 million trying to save your life, but can’t, does the hospital just have to comp that bill?
That doesn't sound right. EHS crews will always take you to the closest hospital in a life threatening emergency
they were probably closer to that hospital but picked the other one to give birth at

I paid $5,500 for the birth of my daughter. She was in ICU for 6 days just because she didn't eat within the first 4 hours of being born. She had no problems after 8 hours but they kept her in there anyways to monitor her. She was supposed to be released on the 5th day but the doctor forgot to do her hearing test which is required prior to being released. I complained to the hospital and insurance company. No one cared.

I had an emergency c-section to save my son's life. I paid 16€ . For the night by companion spent with us in the room and the breakfast in the morning (France).. I would never ba able to aford a pregnancy in USA
In the USA we choose our own Doctors, hospitals & carers. Outside the USA you are assigned a Doctor whom may not be any good or you don't like but thats too bad because you are stuck with what you get. I can choose to go to the hospital down the road or go to the medical center, you have no choice. You pay a fortune in Taxes to cover your "Free" medical care which is higher than my health insurance. I'll take health care in the USA any day over what you have.
Haha, delusion is in the air tonight.
Load More Replies...You shouldn't have had to pay anything. The c-section was to save your lives.
And economists wonder why the birth rate has fallen in the US... this is just one of the many reasons, but it's definitely a major contributing factor. Birth is big business whether natural or cesarean and it's one that many can't afford.
My wife had endometriosis. Her doctor worked with our insurance to make certain the procedure was covered. We called ourselves early on, and just before going under the knife and was assured we had coverage. We started getting bills in the mail from the doctor asking for the full costs of procedure. We contacted the insurance company and they informed us that there is a process of sending a formal letter with a specific question, and they would answer within so many business days. Their first several replies were 'coverage exhausted' without much else. Every month another letter came asking for payment in full, and every month we got the same short answer from the insurance company. Eventually we learned the policy I was paying into for my family at a steep price every check had an annual total inpatient coverage of $1,500. That's fifteen hundred dollars; which was nowhere near the total cost. The company I worked for was owned by my insurance company.
In Canada there is no in or out of network. We get work done by whomever is there and still pay nothing but a little tax.
Starting to think the insurance carriers deliberately put people into out-of-network services to minimize their own liability. This is reasonable to assume because many hospitals are now owned (or partially controlled) by insurance corporations.
My insurance covered one guy who was on call outside his actual shifts (the first time I met him he did my epidural for my son, not a very memorable guy at the time but it was 8am so not bad) Fast forward almost a year later when I had to get my appendix removed. It was 1am when I went to the hospital with horrible stomach pains, I couldn't even walk, they wisk me away to emergency surgery (a mom with less then a 1 year old, who is working fulltime and in college fulltime) on a Monday night. They called him in, like woke him up at home to come put me to sleep at 2am. He was so rude because he just woke up, and I was already scared. He made ME feel bad before surgery I didnt ask for lol. That poor guy, atleast the hospital is decent enough to make sure i wasn't going to pay out of pocket to save my life. But they can't open more positions up so he didnt have to patient shame me? Clearly hospitals are making good money from us poor Americans.
Oddly enough, fast forward 4 years later when I had my daughter... he was the one to do my epidural for her. Again this was the middle of the day so he was actually a nice guy. But I wish he would of had that same energy when my life was actually on the line. When I was alone and scared shtless in the middle of the night. He apologized to me though, he said he remembered my name and always had felt bad about he treated me that night. But hospitals shouldn't be allowed to do that when it comes to things that are actually needed, outsource beyond what the insurance can pay for, for what? Again clearly they are making alot of money to not have to be such a-holes.
Load More Replies...I chose to have some elective surgery and had researched the costs ahead of time. Everything was in-network. After the procedure, I got a bill from a second surgeon. Apparently the first surgeon (in-network) invited a colleague to join him. He was out-of-network and insurance wouldn't cover his bill.
This should be illegal! I can't imagine any other business situation where something like this will be legal. I brought an extra lawyer so he can charge you extra for no reason.... this is a new type of legal arm robbery
Load More Replies...In Canada, everyone is "in network", so if you need help, you get it without seeing a bill.
Call your insurance company (I know..) and explain you had no knowledge of it and no way to refuse it, and please resubmit the bill or fight for an exclusion so they will cover it.
That's a sick country. I am not reffering to peoples' health, but the medical system is sick.
I wonder if the second sense of your statement would also hold true. So many people might not go to any kind of check-ups, thus missing chances to treat something that later develops into something more serious...I really wonder how the general health of the US is like.

A lot of us don't. There are a lot of premature deaths due to delays in diagnosis and treatment because of fears of huge bills. There are recent stories of diabetics who gambled on their body's ability to deal with high blood sugars and they lost. It's sickening.

I also had a contrast CT scan and a number of doctor visits. I spoke to the surgeon and the anesthesiologist before surgery. My surgeon visited me after the surgery when I was in bed and awake enough to converse. He visited everyday and sent me home with a Rx for pain meds. I go to see him again in 2 weeks. I live in Canada, the cost to me has been $0.00. I waited 5 weeks from diagnosis until surgery which wasn’t a problem because the cancer was discovered early. Had it been necessary I would have had the surgery sooner. I can’t imagine the added stress that worrying about the bill would have added to the stress of the surgery and outcome. Americans often say that they live in the greatest country in the world. I guess that’s until they get sick or are in an accident.
Come to Canada. We are awesome and the medical care is free! An ambulance will only set you back $80
It's fvcking sad that people keep insisting that the American healthcare system has it's merits. No, it doesn't. There's no way to justify that people die because they can't afford the medical treatment or medicins they need. You can't justify that people suffering from diabetes die because they can;t afford the insulin. You can't declare with a clear consious that you're a Christian and allow that people die because they can't afford medical treatment. Hoe dare you call yourself civilised and the "greatest nation in the world" when people die because they are too poor to see a doctor. It's an outrage and all Americans should feel ashamed for letting their countrymen down.
We have free dr's & hospitals all over the place for people who cannot afford a dr or regular hospital. There are 2 within 30 min of where I live. Medical care is and always has been available for everyone.

People with free health care use the emergency room as a primary care provider. My tax dollars pay for it. There have been times I needed the ER or one of my kids did, but I couldn't afford to go, because I have insurance.
Money talks here in the US health care. My friend's husband and I both had/have pinched nerves. He had one, and I have 2. He only had to deal with the pain from his for 3 months before getting referred to for surgery by a top orthopedic specialist here. I'm going on 4 yrs. Did everything he did. The injections, physical therapy, etc. Failed all but still no surgery. The difference, he has better health insurance than I do. That's another problem: better insurance equals better quality of care. But also higher deductibles too.
And why the f would you write the number down on a pre-paid postage slip, with the CVV??? That's a massive security risk!

In 2016 I was taken into hospital. I was given a lot of painkillers (apparently) and then they realised the scar tissue from a hemi-colectomy in 1986 had wrapped from part of my bowel. I then had (within 10 days) a laparoscopy, septic shock, laparotomy, ICU, life support/dialysis, HDU, TPN and a further 5 weeks in hospital followed by daily visits by the District Nurse, PICA and goodness knows what else. I daren't imagine how much that would have cost in the US.
My brother-in-law and his wife had a baby at 26 weeks. The baby survived, but he spent over 4 months in the hospital. They received a bill for 1,000,000.25 - one million dollars and 25 cents. My brother-in-law said it was the 25 cents that really got him.
Great stories but what no one is mentioning is that a major portion of the bill you get is to pay for all of those who don't pay anything at all for services and treatment. Health care costs don't go down when everyone has insurance, they only go up to cover the cost of services provided. The pathos may be real but the logos is missing.
I thought that might almost be reasonable for seven months, but then I remembered they do dates differently in the US and it was seven days.
My goodness ,I’m so glad I live in England ,,, no bills ,no payment required, for all these treatments
Send them a penny with a penny stamp on the bill with no return address outside.
Patients who do NOT have insurance are severely penalized because there is no "Cash" option for lower payments. Hospitals and medical clinics make contracts with insurance for what they will actually pay. They end up getting it MUCH cheaper than an individual. Ex: I had an ultrasound and the insurance company was billed $5,000+. They allowed $78 and the rest was written off due to their contract agreement. They ended up doing the test for $78 and my part was $7.80! If I had not had insurance, they would have charged me the entire amount instead of the contracted amount. If a test can be done for $78, why are they charging individuals $5000+? Are they adding the amount written off to the charges of people who don't have insurance so they can get that amount after all? It's a crooked system and will remain so until we have Medicare for all!!!
They give you less that 2 months to magically come up with $22,000?!?!?! WTF
The worst part is, tax payer money is used to fund the research of some medicines only for those same companies to price gouge us.
I ordered a prescription that cost around $1,100. I found a coupon online that took it down to $24.
Until I meet my $6,000 insurance deductible, I pay for prescriptions out-of-pocket. I thought the insurance companies negotiate discounts. I went to the pharmacy one day with a prescription and handed over my insurance card. $82. The pharmacist handed my card back and said, "Don't bother with the insurance. I'll just charge you retail". Got it for $50.

Obamacare has mitigated much of that, though I believe there are gaps in coverage. anyone can apply for medicare(govt supplied healthcare) if they have low or no income, though im not sure what the approval rates are. As a middle class american, I think i pay somewhere in the $250/month range for coverage, and that usually covers half the cost of a visit.

Well, nothing directly wrong with this person, but there can be times where a set of symptoms can result in an expensive series of test to rule out a serious potential issue. My wife was dealing with anxiety after a surgery, felt that she needed to go to the emergency room, and they eventually had to perform a CT scan just to make sure she wasn't going to have an embellism. she was perfectly fine, just so very stressed that the passed out during the scan from panic.

Got some blood work done, then nearly a year later I got a finger-wagging letter from my doctor about how I'd failed to get these important tests done. She had never looked at them, good thing it wasn't something serious.
If they can't figure it out the first time, the redo should be free.
For comparison I just want to put it here that the official rate that the Danish government pays for a CT scan is between 1800 kr ($265) and 2000 kr ($295), or as much as 2950 kr ($435) in the case of a heart scan with angiography. If this is what the government pays in a socialised health care system where the patient pays nothing (aside from taxes), there is no excuse for that kind of price tag, even if you think it is fair to add a rush fee for the emergency.
My appendicitis was so bad they didnt have time to do a CT scan. I went to the hospital in mass pain, and almost felt like I was dying. Couple of questions later, and I was whisked away to emergency surgery. The ER said I could of died if I tried to just go to sleep that night like I was trying to (my appendix was on the verge of busting open inside me, which can be lethal). I dont get how this can come back inconclusive? They didnt even need to do a CT scan to know that my organ was about to explode. This one is just interesting.... they normally dont wait to retest you if it can be lethal. Not at my hospital.
all of theese makes me sad but since I have MS myself and also gets infusiontreatments this feels too close. I am so sorry your country is batcarp crazy! 200 dollars or so depending. That's how much mine was anyway. I'd gone in to the dentist because I was sure I'd cracked my tooth/ broken a filling, they charged me for xrays said the tooth was okay it was an ulcer on my gums- fine, okay I guess. Year later the infection was... big. They were quoting me the thousands to do the root canal, feet a crown, etc- I said can we just pull it out. I got... a lot of pressure from them. "We're in the business of saving teeth" they say. Sure, but I've no dental and if the option is a few thousand and maybe needing it pulled in a few years or just paying 200 and getting rid of the thing now.... technically I still have all my teeth, I just keep one of them in the drawer of my china cabinet.
