Because I read the message in case it’s an emergency, which in most cases it isn’t, and am too busy with something to reply right away. Then I forget about it and don’t remember until days later, at which point I‘m too embarrassed to reply at all.

I was at a referred Dentist' office, and sitting in the exam chair my text alert tone went off. The 20 something tech asked, "you wanna check that?"... "Ma'am, I'm a boomer, they can wait".

The last, and one of the most famous, battles of the US-British War of 1812, the Battle of New Orleans actually took place 15 days after the treaty ending the war was signed. It simply took that long for news to travel.

Because I'm not tied to my freaking phone. I live my life like I did in the 80s, I tell people, I'll catch you next week and then make that effort next week. This week I'm just doing as I do and that does not Include constantly interrupting my social interactions, movies, naps, chores, whatever to text back and forth all over the shop.

Foe me, the issue is, when do you stop the thread? Someone sends you a text, you respond, they respond… at some point some has to not reply. Emails have a sign off, so did letters. Do texts?

Just pick an emoji, send the same one every time you'd have said goodbye & hung up if it was a phone call. 😎, 👍, ✔️ - or any random happy face seems to work, and as long as you're consistent and don't respond to their ~end~ comment in return - people kind of get conditioned into knowing without really knowing it that when they see that emoji your end of the conversation is politely over...

Once my sister and I were out of the house, 1980's, and the folks were went out, Daddy would always check the answering machine when they returned. If there were no messages he would say each and every time: "We got away with it again!!"

I don't like the immediacy of calls. I like text messages. My stepson, 22, always calls me for the most mundane things that could easily have been a one-line message. It got to the point where I ignore his repeated calls on the basis that if it WERE something important he would message me. I asked him why, given I've told him I prefer messages, he continues to call. He said "Well it's just easier to get hold of you". I said "You called 7 times and I ignored all of them. How is that 'getting hold of me'?".

How odd, had this conversation last night. My newish friend asked why I didn't answer his calls (3 times in as many minutes) and I said I was walking the dogs. Oh so you could have still answered the phone, erm..no I didn't take it with me. The look on his face trying to comprehend this. 50ish but grew up with tech so it's not scared of it, I just miss that exact feeling in this meme of when I leave my house I don't need to stay connected. Obviously there are times when I will but going for a walk in the forest is not one of them. So he asked how do get the videos of your dogs playing to post. Oh dear wait until he finds out I don't do social media aswell. Anyways the urgent call was do I want to grab a beer.

This is also why no one can take a day off or a vacation without their boss reaching out to ask them about something that could have waited until they were back.

I love my current job. When I'm off, my laptop is off, and only a few people I work with have my number, and know it's only for an absolute freakin emergency, which will never happen.

I don't mind the ability to have access - it ha been very helpful in truly urgent situations. But too often abused. I cannot tell you the number of times I've gotten a text from someone to tell me that they send me an email I hadn't read yet. And the email wasn't even urgent! Then there is the married couple we are friends with - recently if she sends a text that I haven't seen/replied to yet, he will send me a text to tell me his wife has texted me. Sheesh! Sometimes you just have to step off the grid for some fresh air!!

I have a tier system, in order of priority/importance: snail mail > email > text > phone call. The last one is the only one I'll answer immediately, but only if it's from a known number/contact. The others can wait until I respond.

This is why I turn my phone off in the evening, when Me Time begins. No I don't care if it's an emergency. If it's THAT urgent, call me. My phone automatically turns itself back on if I get an actual call.

Because I work and am an incredibly busy person. If the text isn't an emergency then it can wait. I typically don't pay attention to my phone while working . only people who are the closest to me have my direct line at work for emergency purposes.

Not on purpose. I try to answer right away, because, if I don't, there's a chance I never will. Once a week I scroll through the phone messages in case I made some notes in drafts and that's when I'll remember the message. So, some people get their reply days later. :D

True. But another (lesser) reason I've seen delays is the rise in popularity of secondary carriers (aka Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs)) who don't own their own cell towers. Typically they are less expensive but part of the trade off is lower packet priority when things are busy. Real life example: My daughter arrives in person. She wants to know why I didn't respond to the text she sent two hours ago explaining (situation). While she is asking me about it, my cell phone dings and it is the text message she sent a long time ago. It wasn't always like that - but that sort of thing happened more than once. To the best of my knowledge, I've never had that happen with my friends who use main brand carriers like Tmobile/ ATT

Instant access to anyone anywhere is convenient but not necessarily a good thing at all times. I too kind of miss the "leave a message at the tone days" some of the time.
