One thing that I firmly believe all human beings share is our inner yearning for adventure. We might try and satisfy this calling with good movies, awesome video games, or top-tier tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons (as a Dungeon Master of several years, I’m guilty of this). However, at the end of the day, there’s no real substitute for going out into the field with your own two feet and starting your very own adventure going into the abandoned and mysterious corners of the Earth.
There’s an awesome community on Reddit that documents gorgeous abandoned things and places. With nearly 1.2 million members, they post high-quality images that evoke all of our inner wanderlust. While we’d love to mention their name, our Social Media Overlords don’t take kindly to one of the words in the subreddit’s title, so a link right to their community will have to do! Go on and have a gander once you’re done with this list, they really are worth your attention.
Remember to upvote your fave pics as you scroll on down, dear Pandas! And be sure to let everyone know if you, just like me, get that burning desire to go on a real-life adventure after looking at these gorgeous photos.

I agree. Let's follow it and see what adventures we will find. A land far away filled with Fairies and trolls and kings and kingdoms things that fly and fire breathing dragons...fun to let ones imaginary thoughts roam.

Urban exploration (aka Urbex or UE) is a fascinating but difficult hobby to get into. While we’d just love to put on a pair of dirty old sneakers and rush off to a dungeon or some Elvish ruins, we really do have to consider our safety first and foremost. Precautions come first and foremost.
Abandoned Castle In Ireland Country
This is McDermott's castle in Lough Key, County Roscommon. There has been a castle on this island since the 12th century. The ruins you can see now were built between the 12th and 18th centuries. The castle was finally burned down and ruined during WWII.
It looks so amazing though. It's really that old..... a shame it was burned down. But then I also have to wonder HOW do you burn down a castle made of stone?

Similar story here in Lede, a small town in Belgium. We had a beautiful castle, school building and farm. The government preferred to let nature have its way with it, then demolished it. Could have been everything, now is just one wall.
Wearing gloves, getting a pair of thick shoes, and bringing a dust mask are all a must. You should also invest in a torch, put on heavy clothing, and consider wearing a helmet. Whether fashionably medieval or something more modern, anything that covers your head is a must. And for you ghost-believing fans of the ‘Supernatural’ TV show, bring a pocketful of salt. Just in case you meet some spooks.
Becoming an urban explorer means doing a bit of research, engaging with local Urbex communities a tad, and maybe even getting some basic gear to get you started before you go delving for doubloons and looking for magical artifacts beneath the rubble.

Reminds me of the Search and Rescue Officer stories on r/nosleep. Whatever you do, don't climb the stairs!
There's got to be a story behind this- in the New Hampshire land archives maybe?
My mind immediately wanders into the questions.... How? Why? When?

Found An Old Abandoned Diner While Driving Down Some Back Roads
How does this happen?? Do they just announce "we're closed! Everyone out!" and then just get up and leave?
I always keep wondering about this, especially when so many appliances and furniture are still there. I have NEVER seen that in Germany. Apart from some exceptions after the fall of the wall, places are always stripped and the interior given away or sold. Or eventually someone breaks in a takes everything that is salvagable
Load More Replies...some of this looks staged. cups and saucers, the vase and flowers, salt and pepper water pitcher etc, too clean. maybe set up for the shot?
Wow, didn't even notice that. Really good eye!
Load More Replies...Rosie's is a great find, but this particular photo has been staged. The dishes and small appliances have been added to give it more of a "people just walked out in the middle of a meal" feeling. You can see photos of how the place looks without the fussing here: https://freaktography.com/abandoned-rosies-diner-abandoned-50s-diner/
I had a look. Fascinating, it was quite luxurious. wonder why it died?
Load More Replies...The flowers still have some color to them. Either it hasn't been abandoned long or someone's been replacing the flowers.
I love the (?) aluminum panels on the back wall, it must have made it look so much cleaner and bright.
I'm pretty sure this is also photoshopped. I mean, they started with a real picture of an abandoned diner, but then added a bunch of the details. The coffee urn looks like it's floating and that glass pitcher on the right is clean. So are the cups and saucers compared to the counter top.
Unlike a lot of hobbies that have a ‘just do it’ mindset, urban exploration demands that you prepare in advance so you don’t get hurt or, God forbid, get stuck or even killed.
One Urbex community in the UK that calls itself 28 Days Later (yes, just like the 2002 zombie movie) suggests doing research about the place you’re going to visit, then going in and taking some photos, getting your feet wet (metaphorically and maybe even literally). In their opinion, Urbex is all about joining a community.

Being part of the urban exploration community means engaging with others, going to public Urbex meetings, and even teaming up with strangers from the internet that you learn to trust. Of course, all of this has become even more difficult what with the global pandemic and lockdowns: you have to consider your health and the health of your loved ones before meeting up with anyone outside your social bubble.

Turkey's $200 Million Ghost Town Of Castles - Burj Al Babas
the designer of this idea was drunk to start with.
Load More Replies...This is a building development that went sour. The ‘castles’ were very cheaply made. To the degree that they’re crumbling even now. You’ll notice they don’t look old. Up close they look ancient. Bad construction + knocked down a huge portion of forest to build only to abandon it. Sad. The worst part is that with a little work these would likely be habitable and could be given to those less fortunate. But nobody wants to do that.
The don't look old at all. They look like Hollywood's idea of Barbie's dreamhouse. If you go for that kind of "style" you'd want more space in any case, so failure was assumed at the start. Better workmanship won't help, and won't change it's it the middle of nowhere.
Load More Replies...It looks like someone went out of control with the copy and paste again...
Construction began in 2014. The development was originally successful, but sales eventually stalled, causing the developer to enter bankruptcy. Falling oil prices and instability in Turkey have been cited as reasons for the lack of sales. As of January 2019, 587 of the planned 732 homes were started but none were finished. (thanks, wikipedia)
I just read about this. Such a shame. There is new furniture sitting in some of them, still with the plastic coverings.
This is an environmental crime. Such a waste of natural resources, and all of that land covered in concrete with no green in between. Why? Why are some so greedy? This is insanity
Located approximately halfway between Istanbul and Ankara, the empty town consists of hundreds of almost identical castles in various states of completion. Developers meant for these uniform villas to be luxury vacation homes for wealthy tourists when they began construction in 2014. However, when the company went bankrupt in 2018, investors pulled out of the deal which put construction on hold. The development cost a cool $200 million to build thus far. But instead of a grandiose, multi-million dollar retreat, Burj al Babas has become something out of a dystopian novel. The French chateaux-style castle exteriors are styled with ornate facades, Juliet balconies and round turrets that adorn them. But inside are half-finished rooms. Some look as though workers dropped their tools mid-job and walked out. Workers completed 587 of Burj Al Babas' 732 planned buildings. Gallery & drone video here: https://allthatsinteresting.com/burj-al-babas#3
This place has a very interesting story of waste and consumption. Destined for the economy and evil to devastate.

16 Mile Hike To An Abandoned Train Track Bridge In California
The pic is from an arid part of the state. This could be 100 years old or more.
Load More Replies...Oh! They covered this on Mysteries of the Abandoned on Science Channel. The weight & motion of the trains would loosen the bolts, so they had to eventually shut it down due to unsafe conditions. There is a preservation society or something to that effect that currently maintains it which is probably why it's still standing.
Me and my family were just there for a camping trip, we are currently driving back home. We camped in our trailer in dos cabezes next to the tracks. It was an abandoned station of sorts with a water tower that is still there. We drove farther down the tracks and walked about 2 miles down the tracks to a tunnel. It is fenced off from one side but there is a small trail over the hill so you can get in. This terrace is about 6 miles from the start of the trail and its 12+ mile round-trip. Along the way there are some old train carts that rolled down the steep hill. Its a truly beautiful place and a wonderful place to do some photography

Ms World Discoverer Was A German Expedition Cruise Ship. It Hit A Uncharted Reef In The Sandfly Passage, Solomon Islands 29. April 2000
instead of letting it rot away in nature, imagine they would clean it up
Found on Wiki - On 30 April 2000, at 4 p.m. local time (0500 GMT), the ship struck a large uncharted rock or reef in the Sandfly Passage, Solomon Islands. Captain Kruess sent a distress signal, which was received in Honiara, the Solomon Islands' capital city. A passenger ferry was dispatched to the ship and all passengers were then transported to safety. The captain then brought the ship into Roderick Bay after the ship began to list (tilt) 20 degrees and grounded it to avoid sinking. After underwater surveying of the ship, World Discoverer was declared a constructive loss. The ship has remained in Roderick Bay ever since.World Discoverer still sits in Roderick Bay of the Nggela Islands with a 46° list. The closest salvage companies, stationed in Australia, found the ship ransacked by locals and other factions. The Solomon Islands were undergoing civil war at the time. Tidal activity damaged the ship even more. The ship has been sustaining surface rusting with many of the windows removed. The ship became a tourist attraction with the locals of the island as well as other cruise lines that pass by World Discoverer, including MV Princess II.[9] A salvage was attempted in 2000 but "abandoned after shots were exchanged with the local tribe".
may be an uncharted reef, but hey, how can you not see that? It's evena kind of a bay...

I’ve lived my whole life smack dab in the middle of the Arizona desert so I’ve experience plenty of sandstorms and haboob. But I’ve never seen anything like this in the U.S. My best guess is this house is in or around Death Valley. It’s the only place in the U.S. I can think of with enough sand and the right environmental factors to generate a severe haboob capable of causing this effect in a short time span. I say it all happened within 5-10 years based on the type and coloring of roof tiles and satellite dish model. For those who don’t know, the roof tiles are predominantly used on stucco houses built after 1995 in Arizona, Nevada, and southern California.

Reminds me of this weird, cool and underrated Ryan Gosling's movie : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_River_(film)
At this point they should seriously consider renaming Detroit to Detritus.

Do you think that round window on the top is just there for lighting purposes? Or did it serve some other purpose?
Probably used to calculate the position of the aircraft using a sextant way before the gps.

Abandoned Railroad Tracks In Forest
What Used To Be A Square Building Is Now A Parallelogram
This reminds me of South Ostrobothnia. It's so flat and there's little sheds and houses here and there. We might have a bit more trees than in this picture though, we'd have a big forest far in the distance. Tbh seeing the land touch the sky like this is starting to freak me out the longer i look at it.
An Abandoned German Tank Located In Veines, Norway
Technically, it's a French tank - a WW1 era Renault FT, to be precise. Captured by the Germans after the fall of France and then use das a pillbox in Norway. Intererestingly, it used to be a lot more complete, but the rear deck and other choice parts of this tank went missing a few years ago and it's speculated someone needed parts for a restoration project...
Abandoned Richmond Power Station
The Proper People did a real nice YouTube urbex vid on this recently. It's in Philadelphia, PA about a mile from where I was raised.

Bring back drive-ins so we can social distance at the movies. And possibly save movie theater companies. I'm worried about them.

The Remains Of A Crashed P-38 Lightning On A Beach In Wales
Did you know that there are more planes in the ocean than submarines in the sky?
Ah, the "Maid of Harlech". She lies buried in the sand on the coast of Wales, and a few groups are trying to raise enough money to dig her up and restore her.

Had to look this one up: Pollepel Island is a 6.5 acre island in the Hudson River in New York. The principal feature on the island is Bannerman's Castle, an abandoned military surplus warehouse.
It's about 40 minutes from where I live they have tours now to go out and see it. https://bannermancastle.org/tours-and-events/
An Abandoned Mill In Sorento, Italy
Abandoned watermills are pretty common. They used to be wealthy manufacturing places, then became completely useless and left to falling apart, which is a shame since they would make a cool low-tech alternative for small local industry now.
Abandoned Police Station. No I Didn’t Steal A Riot Shield
I didn't steal it, it called "Borrowing it without ever returning it back"
I totally would've... lol but again, looks staged a little too clean to have sat there for so long.

Abandoned Man Made Island In Japan
This was built off the backs of Koreans and Chinese who were taken from their homes and forced into slave labor. They were beaten, starved, and worked to death. Their bodies were just thrown into the sea. They never kept an accurate record either, completely hid the war memorial in dedication to the Korean men that lost their lives on Takashima Island. Makes me sad that this was made into a UNESCO World Heritage Site which opposed by South Korean authorities on the grounds that Korean and Chinese forced laborers were used on the island prior to and during World War II. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashima_Island https://www.soompi.com/article/769975wpp/haha-takes-heartbreaking-trip-to-memorial-for-forced-korean-labor-workers-in-japan-on-infinity-challenge
Yes, this is Hashima island. Exterior shots of it were shown in Skyfall. During World War 2 it was a forced labour camp, prisoners of war and political prisoners were forced to work in the coal mines below it.

What a waste...these could be repaired and given to schools in still-developing countries...I remember reading about a poor, outside school in India where the kids have to sit on the dirt ground due to not having desks/chairs...these would be a godsend to them.
those chairs were thrown in there for a reason probably.

Exactly... What a waste of resources, energy and space.

Great photos! I love the eerie beauty of abandoned places :)
So much could be reused and repurposed from these. What a bloody waste.
There was a closed-up mansion on a hill above my grandparents' house in Missouri. My cousin and I used to explore up there when we were kids but never could get inside. I imagine it's gone now. Pity, that.
If I had the money, I would love to fix up some of the houses and public buildings. Some of the the architecture is so interesting.
