I Travel To Forgotten Places Around The World, Here Are 34 Pictures I’ve Taken
I'm a French artist, and my name is Dimitri "Jahz Design." I graduated as a graphic designer. I have always been interested in history and architectural remains. It was in 2013 when I developed my interest in the photography of heritage in disuse. My first exploration was an ancient cemetery of military ships.
I travel the globe looking for places in decline. Today, I want to share with you the most beautiful abandoned places around the world.
Also, check out my posts about the most beautiful abandoned castles, Georgian Soviet-era spas, European abandoned theaters, and lastly my most beautiful abandoned places around the world.

Castle, France
MONEY. Private owners don't have the money, they fight sometimes about inheritance for decades. That is not an "historical building", obviously. Just a great house from the 20th century. I'm french and this happens because people have no money. Like everybody. The french state have a fund: 300 MILLIONS to help private/public owners. Our patrimony needs billions. That's not even a castle, nore a manor, it's a house.
Load More Replies...Yes because it's from the 19th century. Same architecture. It's just a house, you can buy a 15th century castle with 30000 euros. You will need millions to renovate it.
Load More Replies...How does the OP remember to go to all these places if they've forgotten them?
Castle, France
that's kelly's castle, it's haunted and it's in malaysia, the red plates show where the residents died it is NOT in france :/
Load More Replies...What a magnificent staircase! The work that went into that is fantastic!!
You can't make it up the stairs you end up down the trap door. OUCH !
Villa, Bulgaria
The left side of the building looks like it’s snarling at the trees
I love seeing these old buildings. Would love to see how they looked in their prime. Being 4+ years into a reno on a 1920 bungalow, I fully understand why no one restores these buildings. They would never be worth the investment. We've done nearly all of the work ourselves and will still be north of $300K in a 2200 ft home. Not to mention 5000+ man hours. I can only imagine it would cost millions to reno a home like the one above and you're still 20? feet from the neighbor?
My 2nd Favorite. Even tho it does remind me of AHS Murder House lol (Ooh Look! There's Jessica Lange!)
Villa, Portugal
Ahhh, Portugal, so beautiful & so underappreciated. Thank you for sharing this Jahz Design!
They eat money by the truckload to keep them up. Plus, taxation.
Load More Replies...Abandoned Castle, France
And it also takes a fortune to run, hence why it's in such a state...
Load More Replies...I absolutely love this place. The moat makes it so romantic. So many fantasies go through my mind.
"We built a castle in the swamp, and it sank. We built another on top of it, and that sank too!"
If I weren’t allergic to mold, I would so love to live in this triangular mini castle
I wish there was something like National Trust to take care of these beautiful buildings.
Abandoned Archive Room, France
Makes me also wonder what's in the files. It's giving me 'The Magnus Archives' vibes
Load More Replies...Nice building. Seems as though everyone was in a hurry t get out of there.
Abandoned Manor, France
Ghost Ships, France
Nice picture. Its a shame after all the work that these ships have done and then they are left to rot : (
Abandoned Villa, Italy
People run out of money, move elsewhere, the places become neglected. Across my street, there's an abandoned Country club. Inside the golf store,(from the outside view) there's a computer, and a sunglasses rack, still with sunglasses. Pictures of the club. The outside scoreboard still has the sponsors (Amongst them many non-existent businesses) and the players with scores. Its only been abandoned for 2 years, but funny how damaged things can be neglected in such short time.
Load More Replies...I can almost imagine what's happening... Grape fields, Italian music from outside, laundry hanging outside and children running around, somebody cooking, and the villa being white with green trim, and a red/orange tile roof.
somebody needs to get a loan & fix this up... this could be a nice home again... a weekend get-away cottage or rental property... what's wrong with you people that you would let a potential income property like this just rot away? They call this "fix & flip" in the US... Somebody could make a lot of money doing that here.
Villa, Portugal
That is a fantastic photo. I love the reflection in the ancient mirror. I would love to know how old this is.
I believe it must date from the early 18th Century.
Load More Replies...It looks like what I’d imagine a European sanitarium would look like
Teatro, Italy
Ghosts. The ghosts may still have voices.
Load More Replies...Abandoned Church
It might be no longer in use... "abandoned" can be used as an umbrella catch-all. I like to think the locals and visitors respect it
Load More Replies...Soviet Space Shuttles, Kazakhstan
Did the Soviets build the better space shuttle..? Yes they did! Don´t let the superficial resemblance fool you, given the same engineering problem with the technology at hand most designs will look similar. But the Buran was a next step in shuttles. It is interesting to speculate that if the Soviet union had not collapsed therefore pulling the rug from under the Buran´s feet, the Russians would have had an advanced spacecraft with capabilities way ahead of the American version of the shuttle. Sadly in the end the shuttle concept has proven to be a dead end. The betamax of spaceships.
I am actually wondering if they put them into storage because of how successful America was, and the Challenger incident in 86. Would make sense if so.
Load More Replies...I've seen this before. It's a Soviet Buran Space Shuttle. They tried to copy the American program during the 80s. They left them for storage in the later 80s and remained abandoned in the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Baikonur, Kazachstan. People have explored the area since it was discovered around 2016. Pretty cool, and total soviet thing to just copy the Americans and its allies, for example, the Concorde, and the soviets copied it (But finished first) the Tupolev Tu-144. Just funny how such things happen. The place is the space Chernobyl, back in the USSR, literally.
I would love to put that in a kiddies park. i would attach slides ..... the wings would make good shelter for seating areas
Castle, France
I cant understand why possessions are left behind. Even the bed has the same pattern as the wallpaper
This is the same because it's fabric on the walls, not wallpaper but wall upholstery.
Load More Replies...Ooooh, love a good Toile! Baby carriage a bit ominous but I watch alot of mystery/thrillers
Wow! I REALLY want to live here. Technically, that would be free, right...?
Somebody owns it, even if it’s the local government or tax agency.
Load More Replies...Sanatorium, Georgia
The detail in the dome looks as though there are tiny doorways all around it...such a beautiful haunting place with many stories to tell I'm sure!
@Billy the kid~ This one actually IS a metal facility
Load More Replies...Asylum, Italy
Castle, France
Tell me the exact location. I will go and pick that furniture up. worth some money.
Might be worth some money, but don't you think it's better to leave things where you find them, especially if they're like this? Just taking them would ruin them in a sense. I don't know, I'm probably just sentimental
Load More Replies...imagine those books inside those cabinets tell missing bits of history we never knew
I know. When I see these photos and they have books, I feel like I should go there so i can get the books and give them a proper home to be taken care of
Load More Replies...This bookcase is huge! Compare it with the door on the right side.
@AyrinCharles YOU SHOULDN'T BE SO QUICK TO JUDGE! WE DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE OWNERS! IF SOMEONE ABANDONED A PLACE LIKE THIS, IT WAS MOSTLY, FOR GOOD REASON!
Buzludzha, Bulgaria
It reminds me of the scene near the end of *Close Encounters of the Third Kind* where when Truffaut gets on the ship
You cannot imagine how close to the truth you are :D We call this monument "The flying saucepan" :D
Load More Replies...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzludzha_monument ; it's a Communist-era monument/hall on top of a mountain.
Load More Replies...Look it up, it's stunning on the outside, too, perched on top of a mountain and looking indeed like a landed mothership.
Sanatorium, Georgia
Castle, France
It does eeeek Thanks for drawing attention to it LOL
Load More Replies...somebody needs to get a loan & fix this up... this could be a nice home again... a weekend get-away cottage or rental property... what's wrong with you people that you would let a potential income property like this just rot away? Orphanage, France
Imagine how great these places were for abandoned/destitute children and what a remarkable social progress they represented. Without them we wouldn't have today's institutions (and some of our forefathers, who would have died of sheer hunger). Compare them with the Victorian baby farms...
Load More Replies...Those stairs look exhausting! This is why we are an overweight people. Bring back exhausting stairs!
Palace, Portugal
To how long ago this was built there couldn't of been any Health and safety. how many accidents building that?
Castle, France

Abandoned Epilogue Morgue, Belgium
I mean, it’s a morgue. Better dead people in a place like this than torturing living.
Load More Replies...I agree. I always go for the dark side of things. This pic looks so simple, but when you imagine everything the proverbial fly on the wall has seen, it gets dark quick. But death is natural, people usually do not like to think of it. I think this photo is hauntingly beautiful. I appreciate the simplicity yet deepness of it.
Load More Replies...Run awaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
Mine, France
Orphanage, France
Yes, the gut reaction is "Horrible", but when you stop and think of other institutions, such as workhouses... it suddenly becomes a positive memory by comparison.
Load More Replies...Why are place like this still not in use? There was an elderly home near me that got closed down over 2 years now and it is still derelict.
Most places like these get shutdown because of upkeep cost and the fact that so many of them are full of lead paint, asbestos insulation and a hundred other things that make them worse to live in.
Load More Replies...Rocket
I think it's an Ariane, and it must be at a former test site. I believe they used to test them in French Guyana.
Where though? There's no palm trees in Baikonur...
Load More Replies...Castle, Belgium
ok who has the guts to sleep at the couch during a night ? I bet there would be some guests sitting next
Theater, France
That looks Social Distance Friendly. Wonder how many of these spots will get a new life in new times?
Theater, Belgium
LOL. You have a fascination with mould. You must be very OCD
Load More Replies...Lol. I'm sorry for sounding weird, but here it is again: Ghosts. The ghosts sing, laugh, and preform. Though, a human-now, a human would only hear whispers, rasps of voices, and dismiss it as wind. (EeEeP. I can see ghosts sometimes oof)
Load More Replies...Race Circuit, France
This abandoned race circuit has way better road quality than we have in Budapest. No cracks or potholes after all this time.
Teatro, Italy
Probably early 20s or possibly late teens. I worked in an old movie theater in San Francisco that had seats like that in the highest part of the balcony—they were the only original seats left. After the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, the downstairs seats and the ones in the lower balcony were all replaced since the theater had to be closed for awhile anyway, and the new ones were a tiny bit wider, so seating capacity changed by a hundred seats or so. At the same time the owners finally installed an ADA-compliant restroom by shrinking the waiting area in the women’s loo.
Load More Replies...This venue appears as if one could rehabilitate without much investment??
Teatro, Italy
It looks like it has every type of moss in the world growing in there.
Factory, Belgium
It’s so beautiful—I love that it looks like it’s made from metal rusted to varying degrees rather than the more prosaic rust-covered concrete.
In my journey to capture the beauty of abandoned structures, I've encountered many intriguing sites with rich histories. This echoes the fate of relics from the past, similar to how a former stock market building in Antwerp served as a commercial center and later fell into disuse.
Exploring the intricate architecture of forgotten landmarks offers a profound window into history and artistry.
These are hauntingly beautiful, I love how you can almost feel the laughter, cries, screams, and stories told within these buildings. The mysteries hidden, if only we could reach into history and grab the tales these buildings have to tell us! The many questions whispered in the walls, why were they abandoned? Did the family who used to own it loose everything suddenly? Had they all died, of war or disease? The chipped paint, growing mold, and intricate furniture that's left to gain dust only adds to the frightening beauty. My mystery-filled soul loves this. :) I do hope they get renovated and restored to their former glory however, there really is no use for keeping such grand buildings empty. Thank you for taking such beautiful pictures!
This was brilliant! All the activities in these buildings no longer exist. It makes me wonder why they are abandoned. Its a shame to see them rotting away to dust when there are people out there on the streets..... that would appreciate something like these. I hope they eventually get renovated and put to good use.
You can buy a castle in France for less than 100000 euros (like the one on the link build in the 15th century), the issue is not the price of the building, but the cost of the work that these buildings needs. Structural issues, lead pipes, rotten wooden floors, rotten walls, rotten wooden frame, rotten external joinery... These buildings needs total structural renovation that cost millions. https://www.chateauxpourtous.fr/p-11-acheter-achat-vente-chateau-medieval-en-ruine-a-vendre-poitou-charente-acheter-achat-vente-chateau-pas-cher-a-vendre-deux-sevres-argenton-les-vallees-79300.php

I love every picture. I would love to visit them and just feel history's energy around me.
I'm amazed people haven't robbed some of the things left in these buildings.
