Hidden in the main Himalayan range of Himachal Pradesh, the facinating Tabo Surely “a world within a world”. A thrill of hurren mountain, unexpected fragment of green fields and aggressive Spiti River.
Tabo Caves:
When I first saw the caves dug in the hillside of a huge mountain in one of the remotest part of India, a normal question came in my mind. Why theses caves are here, who built these, for what good reason?
Sheer combination of cliffs above the monastery and village has a series of artificially excavated caves, well visible from the village. They have been made in comparatively delicate rock and are constantly decaying. One of Tabo Caves was used as a assembly hall for monks initially. Other caves had different use – mainly serving as dwellings.
Tabo monastery :
Below the caves, at the base of the mountain, of the same contemporary period, was the monastery.
It was founded in 996 AD. Tabo is noted for being the oldest continuously operating Buddhist enclave in both India and the Himalayas. There are many priceless collections of thankas (scroll paintings), manuscripts, well-preserved statues, frescos and extensive murals which cover almost every wall. The monastery is in need of refurbishing as the wooden structures are aging and the thanka scroll paintings are fading. Reason
being photography, electric lights or any kind of artificial lights were prohibited now inside the old monastery.
Locals of Tabo
This is the place where you will find the kindest and friendliest people in India. Regardless of their harsh terrain and extreme weather. They will alaways welcome you with a smile. They will offer food and shelter in their own house.
Angels in Tabo
Cheerful, inquisitive and lovable, the local kids are very friendly with visitors. While time may have stood still in this secret valley, but there is a reminder of these children’s careless smile that nothing is constant, even the mountainous ornaments looking size.
