My Conceptual Self-Portraits Tell The Story Of Depression

This is an ongoing series about depression and how it affects people who suffer from it.  It is called “Melancholy – a girl called depression”, and the intention is to give the outsider a peek into what emotions or lack thereof such a person might feel.

The character in this series has no face and sometimes has missing limbs, firstly, so that anybody that either suffers from depression or has dealt with it in some way, can identify with her.

Secondly, to keep the viewer’s attention on the feelings often experienced through depression, like emptiness, hopelessness and not recognizing oneself anymore. This series goal is to bring a voice to those who suffer from this debilitating condition and also to create awareness.

Withering Away

My Conceptual Self-Portraits Tell The Story Of Depression

Its feeling like you’ve lost something
but having no clue when or
where you last had it.
Then one day you realize what you lost
is yourself.

we leave pieces of ourselves
in everything we used to love.”

It’s Complicated

From the outside looking in, its hard to understand. From the inside looking out, its hard to explain.

Forgotten

Somebody asked me if I knew you.
A million memories flashed through my
mind, I just smiled and said:
‘I used to’.

My Conceptual Self-Portraits Tell The Story Of Depression

Some days, I feel everything at once. Other days, I feel nothing at all. I don’t know what’s worse―drowning beneath the waves, or dying from the thirst.

Your photographs are simply fabulous! Which is to say so are you. What haunts you, inspires you. What hurts you, gives you talent.

Just and incredible series of art work by Janelia Mould that is so well thought out and beautifully executed. I felt moved and understood by just looking at these images and even though I am a male the emotion it creates crosses all boundaries.

Hiii Janelia, I'm Aafreen, I wanna share something with you today. I don't know if I'm having depression or not but sometimes I don't feel anything, I wanna cry but tears don't come out of my eyes I don't know what is happening to me, is it a depression or just I'm thinking too must. I tried to find regarding this on google but no result. So here today I'm writing to you if this is a depression, if yes, then how to handle this.

Hi Aafreen, thank you for your message. I am not a professional by any means, if you are not feeling yourself, I would suggest you see a professional as soon as possible. A Psychologist, Psychiatrist or even a Counselor trained in that area will be able to assist and help you manage it, if you do indeed suffer from depression. Do not just leave it and hope it will get better, reach out to someone and please, however hard it may seem, look after yourself. It can be managed and the more you inform yourself on the topic, the better. I have included links that you might want to read or look at :-) https://youtu.be/XiCrniLQGYc and https://www.helpguide.org/articles/depression/dealing-with-depression.htm Thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I truly hope you get the help you need to live a meaningful and happy life again. Best Wishes.

Interesting compositions, but not at all reflective of the experience of an actual person having this affliction. First... way too much color. Do you actually think people with depression feel, or see, any of this color in life? You cannot translate their experience to others using a medium depressed people can't even appreciate. Ironic, that.

People have different experiences with depression. For me I was numb. The visual world was one of the only things that interested me.
