It’s hard to believe that the 1990s were 25+ years ago, but taking a scroll through the Nineties Anxiety Instagram account will quickly remind you how much things have changed since then. You’re likely looking at this article on a smartphone, which would have blown your mind if you were handed one in 1995. And you’re probably wearing an outfit that you wouldn’t have been caught dead in 30 years ago.

But clearly, many of us are happy to reminisce about the past, as Nineties Anxiety has amassed an impressive 2.6 million followers since it was created in 2016. Here, you can be reminded of all of the films, TV shows and fashion choices you loved a few decades ago. And if there’s anything you don’t miss about that time, this account might remind you how much nicer your life is today! 

To learn more about what made the ‘90s so special, we got in touch with Nic and Jordan, co-hosts of Filmshake - The '90s Movies Podcast. The hosts were kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda and discuss what they love most about this iconic decade.

"Man, where do we start! I am obviously focused on the movies of the time, but pop culture in general as well," Jordan shared. "I love the '90s for its ridiculousness. Movies and media that took risks. Creativity that wasn't afraid to be absurd. Over the top action. Unrestrained comedy. Just weird little indie movies that studios dared to produce. There were so many more mid-budget movies as well, movies for adults that weren't tied to franchises and IP. Erotic Thrillers, Practical Effects, true Hollywood Stars. The '90s were the best!"

"The '90s is the perfect decade," Nic added. "Wedged carefreely between the Cold War and the War on Terror, the future was optimistic and boundless. Blessed with all the gifts and possibilities of the new Internet, but without the harshness of 'always on' connectivity or social media. This sense of freedom informs the films, and thus an unrivaled decade of cinematic creativity was born."

So what inspired Nic and Jordan to launch their podcast? "We originally started with classic Japanese cinema!" Jordan said with a laugh. "Very different! But we realized the goofiness of our takes and personalities would fit something like movies from the 90s even better. We both grew up watching tons of movies from this decade, and they have been a big influence on us personally and creatively. It was just a natural fit and something we plan to do until we're in our 90s ourselves!"

"We were coming out of a stressful situation from our previous podcast format, and thought, 'What would give us the most joy and relaxation?'" Nic added. "The '90s cinema of our youth was a no brainer."

Next, we wanted to know which films are the hosts' favorites. "Currently, we've been championing movies from 1999 for the 25th anniversary all year long," Jordan noted. "We truly believe it's one of, if not THE best, year in cinematic history."

"Nic loves The Sixth Sense. I love Being John Malkovich. We disagree on those completely, so listen to our episodes on those movies if you want to hear some old friends almost break up over their movie opinions," he jokingly shared.

"Other than that, for some ridiculous '90s action cheese, blended with amazing camera work, acting, and iconic characters, everyone should watch 1991's Point Break at least once," Jordan continued. "It was the first '90s movie we covered in this format and has become kind of the flagship film for the podcast."

"Personally, I think every person on Earth should watch 1994's The Shawshank Redemption at least once," Nic chimed in. "It's a movie about hope that is so transcendent, it crosses the bounds of all human experience."

"In these sometimes divisive times, we're just here to entertain, to take older listeners back to a more carefree time in their lives, and transport younger listeners to an incredible world of cinema they may be curious about," Nic told Bored Panda. "An escape to the greatest decade known to man!"
