Get ready to cringe, laugh, and maybe even feel a weird urge to dust off the boxes in your attic, because we're diving deep into the most radical (and questionable) fashion choices of the 1980s! Back when bigger meant better and more meant MORE, we somehow convinced ourselves that acid-wash everything, shoulder pads that could double as flotation devices, and hair that defied both gravity and reason were totally tubular fashion choices.
From fluorescent windbreakers that could be seen from space to perms that survived nuclear-levels of hairspray, these trends defined an era when fashion said "hold my New Coke" and went absolutely bananas. Whether you lived through these sartorial adventures or just enjoy pointing and laughing at old family photos, join us for a bodacious trip down memory lane. Warning: This much neon and spandex in one place may cause an unprompted performance of "Flashdance."

Early-Mid '90s Windbreaker/Tracksuit: Just A Reminder That We All Wore These And We Thought They Looked Good. I Can Still Hear The Swoosh/Swish
I lived in these from age 10-12, had two sets. One set was super special, it was pink and had some brushed cotton style finish so it was soft and matte and did not make noise when wearing it. I would not mind if they made a comeback to be honest, I always found them super comfy and practical, but then I’ve never been much of a fashion guru.
Worked with a girl who wore those nylon pants every day. We called her Swishy.
Big Earrings And Big Hair! The Classic 80s Combo
Shoulder Pads
Oh, shoulder pads, the bane of my existence. In high school (In the 2000s) we had to sew a coat. It would be a very nice coat, but my teacher insisted that I have to sew shoulder pads inside and make sleeves shorter. As a result, coat was ruined. I looked like I had huge shoulders and sleeves were too short. When I stretched out my arm, my sleeve rolled up to my elbow. 16 years later, I am still angry.
There are normal shoulder pads in women's jackets, and then there are the football player sized ones in the 80s. Like on Dynasty! But this is a fabulous outfit in the photo.
Never understood the shoulder pad thing - how is it sexier to look like a lego?
it wasn't to make women look sexier, but to make them look more masculine in a business world that was very male-dominated
Load More Replies...These are coming back. They are super flattering in the right outfit.
They're making a comeback. Not sure how I feel about that. In the 80's they took over EVERYTHING! Who wants to look like a linebacker in your sexy nightgown?!
Spandex And Paint Splash Pattern
I don't think that this was everyday fashion. And as far as I know, back then even Superman had underwear over his pants. And leg warmer are back in fashion :D
Dance Style Of The 80s
Unfortunately, no lawmaker ever thought to ban the sale of spandex to people larger than size three.

Disagree. I look hot in a crop top. It shows off the roundness and furriness of my belly
Load More Replies...The Perm
Age 18 I was 5'11" and 126 pounds, very tall, very very slim, and I looked about 13 at the most(ID checking was a nightmare till I filled out in my mid 20's). It was late 80's and I was a glam rock fan. I wore black leather jeans/jacket and had very long, very straight hair. I just needed one more thing to complete the look. Strutting out of the hairdressers I now sported a curly perm half way down my back(Brian May of Queen but twice the length), I was now a rock god "nothing gonna stop us now". Woke up the next morning showered and it had dropped, not completely, now I had shoulder length wavy hair with tight luscious curls on the ends, hair most girls would dies for; except I was male. After a dozen cars wolf whistled me and an old man told me how pretty I looked, I had it all cut off.
Looks like a little doll and unfortunately I had those very same earrings
Why did people, before the 2000s, dress, do their hair and make up to look older than their real age?
The 80's Secretary: Big Hair, Stockings And Heels, Smoking Cigarettes In The Office
It's strange to me to see disclaimers on a TV show.... Sexual activity, violence, and smoking - as if smoking equates to the others. It is bad for you, no doubt
Load More Replies...My mum was a secretary in the 80s and the hair and shoes were a bit like this, but the clothes definitely not! (She did go through a cigarette and coffee for breakfast phase, but not after having kids thank goodness) Her bosses at World Vision and then a legal firm wouldn't have been happy with this attire.

Yes, yes, in the 80s, all the guys were walking around with their bellies exposed, wearing a fake army collar 😛
It took me a second to realize what a fake army collar was... Aka fake dog tags on a his necklace. 😋

I LOVE my scrunchies!! I still wear them every day for my long hair which I guess is still me living in the 1980's!!
My mum still has her scrunchies and what I think were called banana clips from the 80s and wears them. Scrunchies are back in fashion here now, so many craft markets have stalls for them. I bought an orange velvet one from a friend's stall that I love.

Punk Fashion Circa 1986
This was from the 1970s though. It had been overtaken by modern romantics long before this.
Punk started in the mid '70's, but continued through the dark '80's ... Hardcore punk and Oi and then the follow up (right left and center) of the Oi ... Ran way up in the '90's

This has to be way earlier than 86. Punk wasn't too common anymore by then. It had gotten too mainstream.
You should have seen the range of male styles around the grungier parts of Manchester back in 1986. Dreadlocked greebos, old fashioned punks, long-haired blokes in boring jeans and leather jackets, sharply-dressed fashionistas (don't ask me what sort, I never could distinguish them from one another). 1986 is entirely possible - but yeah, it feels more 1970s, and most of those train carriages had been replaced come 1986.

Load More Replies...I looked just like this in Bible College, except not showing my sinful collarbones.
Yep. I was a college freshman in 2003, and even then the Christian college I attended expected us to dress like that for mission conferences and other dressy events. That green dress/lace collar combo in the picture was done in every possible color combination. And I am still angry that the only time I was given demerits was because my fiancé and I were apparently sitting too closely in chapel and you could not lay a hymnbook between us. 😡 Stupid pharisaical legalism.

The Side Ponytail
The Mullet
The raw sexual power of this picture just got me pregnant, and I don't even have an uterus!
I was at a gig, a year or so ago, and there was a young guy outside who had a mullet and moustache, a really colourful abstract looking shirt. I asked what he was dressing for. He asked what I meant and I said "is it fancy dress for a birthday or stag do?" as I looked around, unsuccessfully, for his comrades. He said, with a confused look, "no?". That's when I realised at the ripe age of 32 I was old. I had no idea the whole mullets and moustache were back. I wasn't alive in the 80s so it was my first time seeing that as a fashion trend and not as a gag outfit. Poor guy :-(
Very much back in Australia! I remember seeing other kids with mullets in primary school in the 90s, now a lot of the boys I teach have them.

Hah! I remember these. First saw them on American Bandstand (god I'm old). The concept is great, until you're sweating like a pig and your pits and middle of chest/back start changing colors.
Always wanted one of these, could never find them. Living rural in Australia really sucks sometimes.
Maybe it was in reference to the Samantha Fox song? I had a sweater that said “Thriller” 😂
