When This Barber Was Quoted £1000 For The New Shop Floor He Decided To Cover It With 70,000 Pennies Instead

When a barber shop owner, Rich Holtham, got an estimate of £1000 for the new shop floor, he decided he can do better. So instead, he exchanged 700 pounds to 70,000 pennies and covered the whole floor with them.

“We wanted a new floor but the cost of getting it done was expensive and we wanted to do something a bit more unusual, so we looked at a few different ideas online,” Rich told Daily Mail. The whole barber shop crew spent a full week gluing the coins to the ground, and that’s excluding the gap grouting that was done after.

“We had to take our own cash to the bank and we had to take hundreds of pennies out a day,” explained the owner of 4 barber shops across the UK. “In the end, we took out £700 worth of pennies. That’s 70,000 coins.”

In the end, the barber shop got not only the coolest floor in town, but also some free advertising: “We have had a lot of interest in the floor, to be fair. Passers-by keep coming into the shop to take a few photos. We have gained a lot of business from it.”

It is a clever way to get publicity and to do something 'original,' but I actually think it looks very nice and goes along with the store's aesthetic in an unusual but not overdone way.

It still cost the same amount as the original estimate by the time they paid for glue and resin.

Hardly. As the article says "we have gained a lot of business from it" which means that they are getting more customers thanks to the new and completely unique floor. If they'd just ordered the bland normal floor they wouldn't be no where near as popular as they are now. This beautiful special floor is going to net them a nice revenue in the long run.

He should have exchanged the British pennies for Canadian pennies...same effect, but 70,000 Canadian Pennies would have only come to £428.73.

Very cool - personally i would have thrown in a few hundred silver coins, and go for a pattern to break it up. I thought a few letters they wrote really stood out.

There was a guy on here who did this in his home by alternating the lighter color pennies with the dark to make really nice patterns. I think it took him a while lot longer though, & that was fine for him because he was doing it at his home & not his business. These guys probably would have lost a lot of business if they took too long.

Hey BS4 I finished my entry to the house, about three months ago. Took me about 4 hours total, with 3200 pennies. Back was killing me, but well worth it. Friends are amazed I would even do this floor in pennies. YOUR FLOOR LOOKS GREAT ! Good luck with the barber shop !! Paul from Tampa. Pennie-Ent...1e551f.jpg Pennie-Entry-597a6df1e551f.jpg

Didn't want to pay £1000 but all in all it's cost 5x that in closing the shop, paying staff and in pennies....??

This floor will last longer that what ever other flooring they got a bid on that's for sure. Very artistic too. Many different ways he could have placed the coins to identify each store if he wanted to. Heads up store number one. All polished store number two. etc.

How are British pennies- in Britain- the property of the U.S. government? Read the article next time before commenting. It makes you look stupid.

Brilliant. Though you probably spent more altogether than the estimate, you've created something unique and stunning. Wish I could talk hubby into laying me do a similar thing on our bath room floor. Well done :-)

Cool! It looks so nice and unique. And these times, people would go anywhere that's Instagrammable. But I hope the owner will have a policy: No haircut, no Instagram/Online posts. :P

Looks cool. It doesn't look like they covered the surface with anything, though. I can see the floor getting messed up over time with people shuffling their feet (as they always do because no one lifts their feet when they walk anymore). I would highly suggest covering the floor with clear coat or something or you'll be fixing lots of holes in the future.

In my country it is illegal with the paper money because until some point their producing cost is more than their value. So they count as the nations property not individually yours. What is yours is the cuurency what they representing. But it is not with the coins because their worth is similar what number on them with the value of the metal that they made from. Okay it is still illegal to melt them or sell them as raw material, but anyway you do with them what you want.

One moment... Don't coins have any important symbols on them where he lives? You know, walking on the faces of some presidents, emblems or other such things is a bit weird and making a floor out of them would even be considered a crime in some countries (and I agree with it, I wouldn't want anyone to step on my white crowned eagle). It does look cool though.
