A Day Before Her Death, This 27-Year-Old Wrote A Letter, And Her Life Lessons Might Change You Forever

You might be dissatisfied with your life: not enough money, unfulfilling job, meandering relationship. Perhaps you spend too much time online arguing about politics with strangers. Sometimes we all feel like something is missing, and maybe all we need is a little perspective and a drastic change to start enjoying life.

“If something is making you miserable, you do have the power to change it – in work or love or whatever it may be. Have the guts to change. You don’t know how much time you’ve got on this earth so don’t waste it being miserable.”

These are the last words of Holly Butcher, from Grafton in NSW, Australia. She recently lost her battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of usually terminal illness that primarily affects young people. Holly was just 27 when she passed away.

As she came to terms with her mortality as a cancer patient, a heartrendingly painful thing to have to do at such a young age, Holly decided to write an open letter. She wrote about the life lessons she learned, reflecting on the way her experience with stage 4 cancer made her come to value every second of her time on earth. “I’m 27 now. I don’t want to go,” she wrote. “I love my life. I am happy… I owe that to my loved ones. But the control is out of my hands.”

Perhaps Holly’s words, coming from the heart with passion and searing honesty, will help people to see the bigger picture on how to be happy, one that is often lost in a sea of ultimately meaningless stresses and worries that quickly consume our everyday existence. She urges us to grasp the things that are important, and live life to the full. “That’s the thing about life, it is fragile, precious, unpredictable and each day is a gift, not a given right.”

Scroll down to read Holly’s deathbed letter filled with the best life advice, hug your loved ones, and smile, because you are alive!

This is Holly Butcher. Recently she posted her final message on Facebook

The very next day, she passed away from cancer with her family by her side. She was just 27 years old

Her powerful message has been shared around the world, as people related to her passionate advice to live life to its fullest

Holly had been diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that primarily affects young people

“I always imagined myself growing old, wrinkled and grey- most likely caused by the beautiful family I planned on building with the love of my life. I want that so bad it hurts”

“That’s the thing about life; It is fragile, precious and unpredictable and each day is a gift, not a given right”

“Tell your loved ones you love them every time you get the chance and love them with everything you have”

Holly’s words resonated strongly with many people

I'd add "don't beat yourself up for feeling bad, even though others have it worse". I used to read articles like this and start feeling so guilty about feeling bad that I'd work myself into a nearly psychotic, suicidal rage. I've had to work hard to get to the point where I can read something like this and say, "yeah, but sometimes life just gets you down no matter how 'good' you have it, and so what?" I guess what I' m trying to say is that lusting after some impossible state of spiritual perfection can be just as toxic as trying to have a perfect body. It's ok not to be ok.

It's so weird how death teaches us how to live. We always take life for granted, like it will last forever. I constantly try to ask myself if I die tomorrow, would I have regrets. Live your life people, it is a gift, in a moment it can go away. You are never too old, or too young to start living and fulfilling your dreams. When you go through negative situations, ask yourself would it matter in 30 years, most of the time the answer is no. I am so happy that I realize all the things she is saying, without being sick and dying, it is very big difference between living, and just existing.

Reminds me of a story I heard once how an old man was on his deathbed, and yet he sow tree seed in the ground still hoping and thinking of the benefit it will reap, long after he is gone. There so much good to do, it will make you feel good also even during yor last moments.. Very good reminder, thank yiu !

So this reduced me to tears! What an incredible young woman. This is beautifully written, poignant and true. It's upsetting to know that this wonderful advice is given in these circumstances and so close to her last day. Thoughts and prayers to her loved ones. I'm very sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing such a helpful and timely reminder that we should count our blessings and live (really live) everyday. Forever thankful to Holly for your advice x

I want to say “THANK YOU” from the bottom of my heart. YOur life was cut so short, so very sad, but I want your loved ones to know it was not in vain. many of us, like myself, needed to hear this and hopefully take it to heart. Our time is limited, but we waste so much of it worrying, and coming up with excuses to not do things. God Bless Your Family. You are gone, but not forgotten. I Pray many will take away the message you have left behind. If it gives us a day or years with our loves ones, making good memories, that is what is important. REST WELL IN HEAVEN❤️🤗

Been seeing cancer related symptoms in my body for 5 months now and it's getting worse day after day. I'm so broke that I don't have hope of even going for diagnosis. Have tried borrowing from family and friends but everybody says they are broke, I started a fundraiser but no donation yet made. I'm just hopeless and waiting for ever comes out of it. Everyday I keep reading articles on the internet about cancer and that's how I got here. Ever since this symptoms came, my lifestyle changed, the way I think, I don't have the mind to kill any living thing because I have believed that everything that breathes deserves to live. I'm just 21 and the only son of my late parents. When something life threatening you learn how to plan before time. Although not confirmed I have cancer but the pains in my abdomen region, bloating, gynecomastia, weight loss, lower back pain, bowel movement have caused depression. That same damn cancer took my wonderful cousin, Steve Bunjes, years ago, and he was even 10 years younger than this pretty, young lady (and he had to go thru losing his leg first, and an exploratory surgery to check his lungs (which were also full of cancer). I wish there had been an Oasis of Hope back then for him to go to...and I wish this young lady had known about them. They are curing an amazing number of cancer patients (I've heard as high as at least 50%) even after their own personal doctors have given up hope and offered no more treatment options...and after they'd gone thru all the horrid chemo, etc., which really destroys the immune system (that's why so many cancers come back so soon and so often after a so-called "cure" is announced...and it comes back in a worse form of cancer than the original. I've heard it said (by Rev. Malkmus, of Hallelujah Diet fame...who cured his cancer solely by changing his diet and lifestyle) that oncologists who get cancer rarely do chemo!

couldnt help but notice the word she loves to use "S**T". i can only imagine other similar but worse words she loved to use. yet- preaching. I even think that this article is written by someone pretending. when people use dirty words, they invite demons in to them and let those thrive. then they and their closed ones SURPRISE . rest assured- when u let demons thrive in u- expect early death. I just feel so sad reading this. The life so many are fighting for, the life, better people with golden hearts lose everyday, the life she (Holly) still had and wanted to live, is the same life many throw away because of trivial or serious things that pass. The life many use carelessly and take for granted. I just wish you didn't have to die for the world to realize what you made us all realize. I don't know you, but I love you. Rest in peace Holly

This reminds me of a quote: "When a man knows he is to be hanged...it concentrates his mind wonderfully," by Samuel Johnson. Thinking about death reminds us that time is very much limited and helps us focus on more meaningful things, hopefully. It's sad to see such a young person facing her mortality but I'm grateful that she left this reminder behind.

She's a very brave young lady and I agree with what she advises regarding living life, but there is not enough emphasis "out there" (not faulting Holly) about the dangers of chemicals in causing this epidemic of cancers. Please read http://saferchemicals.org/stories/polly-schlaff-mother-and-widow/ who writes about her loved one coming down with the same thing Holly did -- Ewing's sarcoma -- and her conviction that chemical pollutants were to blame. Pray all you want, but would not God want us to get educated on what we can do as far as influencing politicians and -- most importantly -- voting OUT Republicans who for the most part are supporting a pro-big-business approach to the DETRIMENT of our ecology and so, too, to human health when they allow companies to POLLUTE rather than clean up their messes or not make such messes in the first place by filtering out toxins from the effluents they release into air/water/soil? Grass is always greener argument to counter grass is always greener argument. Not really so great as I see it. Imagine how insensitive it would sound to you if a person that DIDNT want to live told everyone that they should ALSO not want to live. Ridiculous you think maybe? But there are likely as many people in that other camp aren't there? There are more important things than one more day...and if there aren't our societies should really stop asking people to sacrifice for those things.

We are all on borrowed breath, and if we keep that it mind we can tweak our mind-set to place values on the things that matter. My biggest take-away from this is live your life through experiences not things, because it's the experiences that make your life, not material things. I'd rather go for a hike with someone and experience nature and relationship building than going out to dinner, I would always remember the hike. This reminds me of that book "When Breath Becomes Air" well written and moving.

Holly's words wouldn't be surprising coming from a seventy year old. By that age we've pretty much figured it out and most have our priorities straight. For someone not yet half that age Holly's words demonstrate someone who "gets it". Sad that she couldn't beat that monster that lived within her. But I have to believe her words proved she had accepted and was ready to live with the inevitable. That is more than most of us can lay claim to. The spirit that allowed her to verbalize her story means Holly's spirit will be alive for a very long time. People will save this and read it over and over. Doing so will give them strength. Who among us can claim the same?

I understand her words completely. I had a massive stroke 3 years ago. A ruptured blood vessel caused massive bleeding inside the brain that left my entire left side of my face and body paralyzed. I almost died that day but was fortunate to walk, with assistance, out of the hospital a month later. My life will never be the same but I'm blessed to be alive and able to see my family and friends. Even though I can't work or do many of the things I used to do, but I'm thankful to still be alive to enjoy the life I've been given. The only thing we can control is our own attitude. Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond. When something bad happens you have three choices. You can let it define you, let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you.

Except there are people that depressed and they can't just simply get over it and enjoy the fresh air. Intentions were probably good but this whole letter ends up sounding a bit judgemental. It's probably hard when you're struggling and dying and seeing people complain about things that seem insignificant, but just because they seem insignificant, it doesn't mean they are. At least not for them. Also, just because you are struggling with something huge, it doesn't mean other people don't get the right to get upset and complain too. I agree with the sentiment of this letter and can understand some of the reasoning behind it, but things aren't as straightforward and other people shouldn't feel as if their struggles aren't serious enough. That's one of the reasons why people often don't reach out and it's heartbreaking.
