Anything that’s been abandoned for a long time seems to pique our interests, doesn’t it? It’s not just the genuine interest of finding out what things used to look like all those years ago, but also the thrill of seeing how much time has actually altered the abandoned location. Oh, and finding something cool, of course.

Well, turns out, there’s an abandoned bar in the UK that closed its doors back in 1993 and was thus trapped in time. Photos of the pub, the way it stands now, started surfacing lately on the web.

So, up until 1993, The Green Man used to be a basement bar located in current-day Carillon Court shopping center in Loughborough, Leicestershire. Unfortunately, it was closed and renovations that soon followed walled off the entrance, in this way creating a time capsule of the last day of the pub’s existence.

Until it was opened up years later and then there was a book about it. Yep, it came to light in a novel named Green Man’s Dark Secret that was written by four friends—Stephen Ashurst, Karen Ette, Melinda Ingram, and Donna Shepherd—who went to uni in Loughborough and wrote a book with this very pub being the key location in the story.

This one UK pub, The Green Man, was an interesting pub to begin with, but it was also ‘trapped in time’

You see, the pub was effectively built in an underground part of the current-day Carillon Court shopping center

The weird thing is that it is located right under a shopping mall. Like, literally, under it—there’s a trapdoor that leads to it. Sources say it was too costly to build a proper entrance. So, it was out of everyone’s way, but the hardcore audience knew where it was.

Anyway, the venue was cracked open and it was like opening the door into the past. It looked like the staff closed the bar one day, thinking they’d come back, but it never happened and it’s somewhat haunting.

And besides the trapdoor entrance, it was also abandoned and eventually walled off during a subsequent renovation

As you would have expected, there’s dust and debris everywhere, but also, much of the pub is still intact. You can see the bar, the benches, the toilets, and the interior decorations, i.e. those medieval murals. The interior itself is reminiscent of a castle.

The place becomes even more eerie once you see glasses and mugs left behind, worn by decades of dereliction. There’s even a packet of KP’s dry roasted peanuts. Yeah, I’d probably not even try to open that at this point. Not as many cobwebs as people expected, though!

The renovation meant that it was sealed off—’frozen in time’—with mugs and peanut packets left untouched

Since then, several developers have shown interest, but with no results, and so it was abandoned for 27 years now

Since its closure back in 1993, a number of developers came over to check it out, but ended up deciding against it—the price was just too high for them to do anything with. And so the place was untouched for 27 years now.

Funny enough, many pubs are said to be bought out by Tesco to be transformed into Express stores, but even Tesco hasn’t put up shop down here.

Check out the rest of the images of how it looked like on the day it was closed and walled off

How in the world did they get deliveries down there? Drunk people climbing up and down ladders? Amazing place!

It's neat, but obviously not just shut with no warning and everything in suspended animation. All the equipment was removed, all the seat cushions, some of the lighting fixtures. There's one mug that either the construction workers left as a laugh, or a photographer brought as a prop.

I found a mummified 50+ year old sandwich in a house I was renovating. Someone had left it behind while cutting through the floor of a pantry to create a new staircase and it was inaccessible until I started work on the house.

Haha oh man... I didn't see the 1993 part until I read your comment and was thinking "27 years, this bar seems so modern for something from the 70s!!" My wife always tells me that my brain was not Y2K compliant!

I grew up with glasses just like those and a couple years ago I found one at a thrift store. It’s one of my favorites that I use all the time.

In the town where I live, there was a Blockbuster shop that closed down under a legal dispute. It was locked down for at least two or three years together with tapes and candies inside.

Sorry why can't architects use what's the bear and just update what needs to be updated not to do a total remodel. We lose souch of history when total demolition is done.
