I say BS. As long as the dish is not too spicy or contain something the kid really dislikes or makes them ill, then they sit till they eat it, or go hungry until the next meal. I refuse to make special little rice animals or smiling hamburgers to appease a little brat like this one. First time that kid threw food would, my hand to god, be the last time.
