10-Year-Old Shuts Down Bullies By Launching Clothing Line That Helps People Feel Confident In Their Skin

Meet Kheris Rogers – the 10-year-old who started a clothing line after being bullied for her dark skin.

It all started when her 22-year-old sister Taylor Pollard wanted to make her feel better by posting pictures of Kheris on Twitter with the caption: My sister is only 10, but already royalty #FlexinInHerComplexion. Surprisingly, the tweet went viral with over 83k likes and it eventually not only made Kheris feel better but also encouraged her to create her own clothing line – Flexin’ In My Complexion.

“I’ve been bullied a lot, like in the first grade, I went to school with just four other black kids,” Rogers told Mic. “And kids used to bully me because they weren’t used to my skin tone. There was an incident with a teacher and we had to draw ourselves and she gave us a black crayon instead of a brown crayon, and I was really upset.” But now that Rogers has launched her clothing line, she feels confident as ever: “I feel confident in it myself because, even if I still get picked on because I’m darker, when I put on the T-shirt, it makes me feel bold.” Hopefully, the empowering clothing line will help everyone feel confident in their skin: “I just hope that especially for younger kids, people start to feel more confident in their skin,” Pollard said. “It doesn’t matter how dark or light you are, just knowing that it’s beautiful and that your complexion doesn’t determine your beauty.”

My friend, who is white, used to be in a mostly black and Hispanic school and was bullied for her skin color. Racism goes both ways.

my oldest daughter is the only white kid in her class(she's half hispanic, but is pale with blonde hair/blue eyes), to my knowledge she's never been bullied. she did have an experience like this girl once, a little girl told her she should color her self portrait with a white crayon, she just laughed and said she wasn't white, she was peach.

I don't understand people. We all know kids will be kids, and peer pressure can be brutal...but this is why it is so important that parents not only tell them to be respectful, but set a good example by being respectful themselves.

Young Lady, people can be so cruel. But thanks to your sister, and your talent, you've turned a negative into a positive. What a wonderful way to shut up negative people by using your brains and creative talents to make money and launch your own clothing line. Kudos to YOU! This is definitely going to turn into something big. And by the way, YOU'RE GORGEOUS! You have perfect teeth, perfect smile, perfect hair, and a perfect complexion. Let the hater hate. oh babe, you are so beautifull!! to be honest, i was bullied too - the only redhead child (well, our country isn't very multicultural so we are all "white" - but i'm literally white as a corpse just with baige freckles. yeah, and orange hair.) I can say it's quite alike as being darker than others. It's rather xenophobia than racism. but i' always been pretty proud of my red hair! :D

I really don't get how skin color can be a reason someone to be bullied! Me, personally, I am so white, pale and my skin is too thin almost transparent, over sensitive to sun and all unpleasant climate effects - cold, wind, dusty air. And I find nothing good in it. I admire dark-skinned people. They look so pretty to me!

Sure her skin is brown and not black. So what? Does everybody here honestly think the teacher was purposely trying to send her a message? If so, what would that message be? A darker shade of crayon is neither positive nor negative. The teacher just handed out a poor choice of crayon relative to her real skin color. Big dead. Seriously people, get a grip. Plus, some black people do have skin that's almost black so it's not like the crayon would never be used for a black person. I used to live right next to a community where most of the people were way closer to jet black than brown. This story makes me wonder what the other "bullying" was like if this is what was chosen as the example. This girl looks like she's going to be gorgeous. Life treats the attractive woman quite well so this, (according to the only information I have on the matter, which is article), is just clickbait. She'll be fine. Sheesh.

What a strong, beautiful little girl.Whatever she decides to do when she grows up,I'm sure she will approach it with the same determination and positivity she has starting her clothing line and modelling it at such a young age.

oh babe, you are so beautifull!! to be honest, i was bullied too - the only redhead child (well, our country isn't very multicultural so we are all "white" - but i'm literally white as a corpse just with baige freckles. yeah, and orange hair.) I can say it's quite alike as being darker than others. It's rather xenophobia than racism. but i' always been pretty proud of my red hair! :D

"bullied for her dark skin" Whaaaat? Why this s****y correctness? She's black and nothing's wrong with it. I am not pale, I'm white. She's black. End of story.

I can't comprehend teasing someone about skin colour .. I'm not even sure how it registered in a kid's head. I'm sorry she has to deal with this ridiculous behaviour.

Sheesh.
