May 23rd is the World Turtle Day, shellebrated since year 2000, and its goal is to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive.
Nowadays, there are more than 300 different species of turtles and tortoises in the world, and more than half of those are in endangered, threatened or vulnerable status. Here you have a list with some of these turtles and tortoises that we need to care so they won't disappear, all of them beautiful in their own way.

As the grandson of a naturalist who's spent his whole life fighting for the conservation of wetland turtles, I can say it seems to be a fruitless battle. People love the idea of nature insofar as it coincides with their love of bending it to their own wants, and unfortunately turtles don't factor in as much as biking, jogging, dog-walking, four-wheeling, mudding, and off-roading do. These are some of the most enduring species on earth, but lack the capacity to withstand long-term human interference. If human beings are really sincere in trying to preserve them, the first thing they'll do is leave them their space and let nature run itself. History shows that no matter the intentions, wherever humans step foot, nature dies. Sad reality, but reality nonetheless.
This exactly. Nature is fine so long as we dictate every aspect of it. I dream of a time when huge swaths of land and water are marked a no people zone. Save for monitoring to make sure people are in there - it's left to nature.
Load More Replies...It's so sad nearly 150 species of turtles are endangered. It becomes a particularly big deal when you realize all of these beautiful creatures on the photos are endangered at some level. I hope this list makes people more aware of their naturally-unfriendly actions, urge them to change themselves to better and do something for our beautiful planet.
