Dogs have long been involved in warfare, and their use on the battlefield goes back several thousand years. They were used in various capacities by the Ancient Egyptians, the Ancient Greeks, and the Romans, and they're still used to this day as scouts, trackers, sentries, and mine detection dogs. Approximately 5,000 US military dogs served during the Vietnam War, and dogs have been in combat with US soldiers during every major conflict. In homage to these incredibly animals, Bored Panda has compiled this list of our favorite service dogs in action. Don't forget to vote for the best!

they deserve a lot more than a medal:) a dog doesn't know what to do with a gold medal.
True, maybe a lifetime supply of treats would be better. These dogs do so much for us and ask for so little in return

Not to be super pedantic, but "service dog" specifically refers to dogs trained to assist their disabled handler. The dogs pictured here are working dogs: war dogs, military dogs, guard dogs, rescue dogs, police dogs, detection dogs...They are amazing canine heroes, but these terms do mean specific things and it's worth it to get your phrasing right!
Beautiful man's best friend. Animals sacrificing for humans is not something I like, but if they are saving lives it is a beautiful thing. God created them to work & they aim to please. They are great companions for our soldiers that are defending our freedom. I love all animals & I don't want them to suffer. The love & devotion they have for each other is eternal
